Why are 3-4 nose tackles so hard to find?

I hear what your saying, and for the record I'm not a big college football fan so I'm not one who can rate college players, But I still respectfully disagree, Vince Wolfork was drafted to to replace Keith Traylor (who replaced Ted Washington) who was in his mid 30's, on a team that was already loaded. Why not draft at a position of need when your lucky enough to do so. Kris Jenkins was placed on IR after the 8th game and the Jets still did fine with out him. Jamal Williams? Why was he drafted in the supplemental draft if he was such a gem, why wasn't he draft in the regular draft. Maybe he was the by product of good coaching and good linebackers. Casey Hampton, I'm not a big steelers fan, and with all the great players the steelers have had on defense over the years and the lack of production with a true NT, I never really heard much about him. ( sorry I don't watch the pro bowl, but I hear Jason Peters suck and he still makes it every year), the most I've heard of hamptom is last year when rumors were the steelers were going to release him. I thought he might be a nice fit for the bills. Raji, plays DE in the 3-4 alignment, different type of player, Ngata, plays DE 3-4 aligement, again totally different type of player. I would go argue with the experts, but none of them would argue with me so, I have to argue with you. Sorry, but it better then talking health care reform. I just think the Bills have to many hole to fill to worry about that position at this time. I do believe it is an important position, but not with a high pick. -

Come on, how much of mostly muscle is Cody from Alabama. Why can't a guy like lonnie harvey at 340 absorb a double-team block and move a step or two towards the play. How much technique can that really take, I just don't think that type of position warrents a top 64 pick. -
Why are 3-4 nose tackles so hard to find?

I guess my question is, why do these guys need to be so special. Take a guy like Lonnie Harvey, big guy 6'2' 340-345, pretty athletic. Why can't he just line up over the ball, move forward at the snap, clog up the gap, tie up the center and guard and let the linebacker make the tackle. As long he's got the size/ weight and can move fairly well, why would you need a top 10 pick to do that. It seem a 3-4 nose tackle has a very specific job to perform in a very limited amount of space. I would think these guys are a dime a dozen. -
I been looking at other 3-4 nose tackles status around the league, and none of these guys put up hugh numbers. I think Vince Wolfolk had like 31 tackles, no sacks, no fumbles. So what all the fuss about drafting 1 of these guys with a high pick, if thats considered good production. Why won't any big body type who 6'3 325-350 be able to do the job. Just move forward at the snap of the ball, and uses his weight/strengthn to tie up two defenders, so the linebackers can make the play. It don't seem like any of these guys in a 3-4 have any type of great lateral movement, their certainly not going to run anyone down, or take an angle and catch some one up the field. These guys seem to play in about 5 square yards of space, so why are they so hard to find? Doesn't seem that a 2 great middle linebackers will make the nose tackle tackle look good.

If New England offered a 2nd for Lynch?

So why are we so quick to dump him. -

I'm not asking what New England would do or not do. I find most people want to dump Lynch, but not if they have to play against him. Just wondering why? -

If you were Buddy Nix, and New England came calling with a second rounder for him would you trade him to the Pats? Thoughts. -
Why should we trade Lynch?

Well somebody call 1 Bills drive, and put an end to it. -
I think that all NFL teams needs two backs this day and age, even more so if you play in adverse weather 5 to 6 times a year. I like fred Jackson but he's not real young. If I know the Bills they will trade him for like a 5 round pick, who will end up being a part time nickle back, or a rotational DT, or some type of player who never really contributes. I know Lynch is one and done, but I rather take the chance that he turns his young career around rather then give him away for a part role player. If you can trade and package that pick for a shot a Gaithers or someone like that I'm all for it. However if not, I would wait at least until a starting back on a contender goes down in training camp, and that teams over pays for him. I really feel the Bills never really get good value for there trades and alway over pay, except for maybe the Price deal.

Jason Campbell to sign his tender
clearwater cadet replied to lets_go_bills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know, I don't mind if your right. With the Pats not being the only good team in the divison, no set Qb, likely a rookie left tackle, a question at right tackle, questionable return of Wood, lack of depth at most positions, questions with the WR expect Lee, transition from 4-3 to 3-4, no true nose tackle, no big time past rusher at DE, new coaching staff, new front office. I think 3 to 4 winners might be the best were gonna do. I hope I'm wrong, and I know we can full some holes in the draft, but really how much can you do in 1 draft. I think all the RFA really hurt a team like the bills this year. I hope i'm wrong. -
Jason Campbell to sign his tender

Campbell has improved every year he been a starter. My only only concern is he's a guy who gives you 7-9 wins a year, prevents you from ever drafting a top tier guy. I think sometimes you gotta hit rock bottom to take that giant step forward just like the 80's bills teams did. I know with FA it different, but I don't think any teams lets a franchise QB hit the market unless he's an aging guy you really can't build on for the long run. I have no problem bring him in here, but for like a 6th or 7th. Washington needs to get to get rid of him, he needs a job. Washington needs us more then he need them. Let the raiders have him for a 4th, and for the next 6-7 years they can win 7-9 games so they can draft at 9-14 spot and never really go anywhere. Why should we always be the one's to get screwed. Let me tell you from a die hard bills and sabres fans who live in a city where they have won 3 superbowls, 2 world series, and 1 NBA title in the last 10 years, 2nd place sucks. Let be in it to win it even if we have to bomb out for a year or two. -
Soild idea

I know, I know, but i'm willing to give Campbell a shot, for a later round pick. I haven't watched alot of redskins games, and I don't know anything about his leadership. However his numbers have gotten better every year, it seems he been able to stay relatively injury free, and if you look at late high round pick it's seem by their 4 or 5 season as a starter is when they start to break out. Compare his numbers to guys like brees / scaubb, there not that far off, and change of scene did them good. Plus washington has to get rid of him, he has been asked not to return to the teams voluntary workouts once mcnabb got there. Also look at the redskins the past few years, they have been as dysfunctional as the Bills so it's no surprise this guy was in a position to fail. If you think about it long and hard it make sense, and othen then the 2nd round, we can't draft for bean anyways. My only concern is, that Campbell is a guy that keeps you at 7 to 9 winners a year. (Is he that guy ?) I feel like without a top 3 pick we may never land a franchise QB. I really don't know I'm just asking.

Maybe if I buy a Brady Jeresy, then New England will dump him to.

Hard to remember that 17 months ago we were 5-1, and headed to the playoff. Floyd Reese was on NFL live picking us for the superbowl. He had a young franchise QB, a young pro bowl running back, a young undrated pro bowl left tackle, and a young team that could only get better. We were maybe 1 or 2 players away from be a real contender. Now we have no QB, no LT, our young running back is on his way out. No proven coach will come here even though we offer then boat loads of money. Player from other team don't want to come here. All this in 17 months, What happened?
-
Why is it that every bills jeresy I buy, that player is gone in like 2 or 3 years. In 1988 I bought a T. Thomas Jeresy and had it for like 10 years. Since then I've been through Flutie, Drew, Winfield, Willis, J.P., Trent, and now Lynch. When I bought, the Lynch jeresy, I thought wow this is sure thing for years to come. Who should I get thrown off the team this year?

Everyone in western new york better wake up. Whats with everyone happy Mcnabb was traded to the Skin so we could save draft choices because were rebuilding for the future. What future? Until we get new ownership in here that is committed to buffalo for the long term I says winner right now!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ya, lets build a team so when the old man dies, the team can be moved to L.A. and they can win a superbowl. Then we can all hear how the team struggled in buffalo, but now has great sucess in a new market. The fans better start to believe that this season might be our last. I didn't care if they sign Mcnabb, TO, Flo. Adams, I don't care how old they are, or how much it cost. Who ever it takes it win. The Bills are our team, we put the pain and tears into them, no one else. He supported them through good and bad. There no way I'm gonna sit here and pretend I'm happy we saved draft picks so we can build a team for some other city to enjoy.

I know he's a bit undersided for a 3-4 NT, but I don't remember Freddy or Jeff Wright being all that big when the Bills ran the 3-4 in the late 80's and 90's. How is this different?
-
I agree, the whole system under Jauron was off. To many questionable moves last year to throw it all on Trent, offensive line issues, firing OC 1 week before opener, pressure of T.O., Lynch's off field issues, unlimited injuries, etc. I don't know how talented he is, but at least he seem to be able to think out there when he's not being buried. I also tend to question the wide receivers, I won't feel like they get any seperation. With the expection of the long ball they don't seem to be able to produce any yards after the caught. Maybe this limits Trent's window to throw the ball, and he is forced to check it down. I don't know, I guess when in are a 10 year funk, and there is no end in sight, you grab any hope you can find.
