I don't disagree that EJ earned his way to the bench, but I don't think that JW's all22 review should be the basis of any argument. Without reading what JW wrote, how exactly did he confirm what Manuel's read was on any play?

Further, how many great NFL QBs, much less young QBs could make even basic reads and throws in the face of constant pressure? I guess that we should all disregard how bad Tom Brady looked last night (and so far this season) because he has been under big pressure. Likewise, I remember Peyton Manning looking lost in the Super Bowl under pressure.

It isn't as cut and dried as many want to argue. Offense is a system that depends on:

    1. QB makes fast/correct reads and makes accurate throws

    2. OL provides time to read defense and get set to make throws, allows WR to run full routes and look for ball

    3. WR run proper routes and make correct sight adjustments / catch passes that are within their catch radius - I never hear Calvin Johnson complain that he had to jump or lay-out for a pass.

    4. Runs are productive enough to keep the defense off-balance.

    5. Avoid penalties and negative plays to stay in manageable down and distance situations.

AGAIN FOR EMPHASIS: I am not arguing that EJ should still be starting at this point. However, to lay all the blame at his feet and pretend that all will be well now that the immortal Kyle Orton is starting is a joke - at least in my opinion.

totally hear you. But even if you judge EJ ONLY on what he did from clean pockets, he was really bad.
  2. EJ was benched...he wasn't cut. The kid has more potential than Geno Smith. I know it's unorthodox but as the old saying goes "Buy low and sell high". EJ is at a low point. You buy him up now quicker than an elephant eating peanuts. So you disagree? No big deal...but just remember how we let go of Marshawn and he blossomed. We need to lock EJ in now for the long haul.

Marshawn is the same RB in Seattle that he was in Buffalo.

You only buy low on valuable assets. EJ's value is in serious question and you have 3 more cheap years to figure him out. Why in the world would you throw money at him?? For me...it's the dumbest idea not proposed by me on this board.

  3. If the Left Tackle got beat for 5 sacks, you'd want him replaced. If you CB gave up 3 TDs, same.

That's how bad EJ was the last 2 weeks. How is it any different? Everyone should suffer until we find out if this guy HAS a light that MAY go on? EJ was not alone in failing the last 2 weeks, but he was the leader and had ultimate control of the outcome.

    Next.

  4. Everyone keeps clamoring about how much more accurate Orton is.

    Completion percentages

    Orton - 58.5%

    Manuel 58.6%

Orton averages only 200 yds / game and has a 1:1 TD/INT Ratio.

While I still don't know how I feel about the move, I will say people expecting big things from Orton need to pull way back on their expectations.

I'd rather my 58% be further down field than 5 yards. Look if he was any better, he'd be starting somewhere. The question is: Is he better that the 19 QBR who LOST TO THE TEXANS last week. I think it's worth a shot.

What's more likely - the 31 year old improves or the 23 year old improves? They both might not improve.

But we didn't draft Orton with a 1st round pick. EJ should have had a longer leash. Especially when the backup is not a great qb himself.

I'm amazed at your position on EJ. You should watch the games again. And maybe this IS the best thing for his development.

Ask Kyle Williams and Fred Jackson how long EJ's leash should be....

He had D Thomas and Decker in Denver, went 1-4, & lost his job to Tebow.

that Tebow thing was a different animal. I'm sure his stats were worse than Ortons. That's alright. Even if he fails here, I commend Marrone and the Bills for refusing to settle for poor play and letting the next guy have a shot. It sends a good message to the team, to the fans and maybe even a free agent who might play here in the coming years.
  7. Well, you could tell EJ is not an NFL quarterback now and may never be. Orton has started about 70 games in the NFL. You don't get to 70 if you completely suck. So yeah, I'm happy they made the switch.

All I know is if KC holds onto this lead over NE, then Buffalo is in first place and holds the tie-breaker advantage. For now...

The Bills will win the AFC East. They run and stop the run.
  8. Im simple, just give me a QB that can throw a pass to an open WR.

    No doubt. But Superbowl?

Think about it...there's a backup QB in the league right now who played well enough to get his team deep in the playoffs. He's under 30 and was a former #5 overall pick. What in the world would they have to lose in bringing Sanchez in next year. When he sucked, he had absolutely no WRs.

  9. The one that annoyed me was a simple 10 yard in by Woods where EJ hit him in the earhole as he was turning around. There was no pressure. No reason to throw it when he did or where he did. That spoke volumes to me. The missed check down to Chandler is another clue as to where EJ is at.

Good breakdown by the way. I, too, would treat it as a bad throw if it's placed wrong, even if the WR had a chance to catch it. That being said, they need to catch that stuff.

  10. Orton is just a back up

But he is an NFL backup QB who has shown he can win in this league. The only thing EJ does well is interview apparently.

It seems to me that Marrone is being stubborn about this. He wants to show how his great coaching will put EJ in a position to succeed. He'll be nasty this week and point to breakdowns and drops, but everyone outside OBD can see that his QB just doesn't deserve to be on the field.

  11. He will turn it around and when he does....look out. We'll have teams clammoring to sign him. So it makes sense to sign him long term right now. I'd say sign him for 8 years but that might not fly...so 5 years/$75mill sounds reasonable. He would be locked in and we'll have a star in 2-3 more years on the cheap.

I know you're pulling everyone's chain, but the joke has gone on long enough.

This is where you say "HA...I can't believe you thought I was SERIOUS!!"

  12. Orton needs to start or I gotta think the locker room is going to start revolting soon. Too much talent on this team to be wasting time on a guy that clearly isn't going to be it

    BOOM!!!

But I think the Bills will throw EJ to the wolves against a good Detroit team, they'll lose by a lot and Orton will start at home against New England. And that game might still be for the division lead.

Quietly, the AFC East sucks this year.

  13. Matthew Fairburn writing for syracuse.com noted that EJ is going to be in contact with his mental coach from FSU. I don't even know how to adequately and appropriately respond to this, if true. A mental coach. You've got to be kidding me. Unbelievable.

"Prior to the game, Albert Breer of NFL Network reported Manuel was again working with his mental conditioning coach from Florida State."

Marrone cannot fix someone who's been told for years that he's good. Nor can Hostler, Downing, or Hackett. If a guy's mentally weak because no one has been hard on him at times, then the NFL isn't the correct venue to start.

"EJ, you are good. You are confident. And gosh darn it, people like you".

    That oughta do it.
