  1. Saw this on twitter:

    http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2017/3/7/14841906/buffalo-bills-kicker-steve-christie-dan-carpenter-doug-whaley?utm_campaign=buffalorumblings&utm_content=chorus&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

Steve Christie looked to help Carpenter with his kicking, but Whaley wouldn't let him.

I'd like to wish the very best to Dan Carpenter and his future endeavors. It's not easy kicking in Buffalo! For the record, I did offer to help him, but was told by the GM that he wouldn't be receptive to outsiders. You would think after kicking there for nine years, l wouldn't be considered an outsider. But rather an experienced resource that was available to coach a fellow specialist in a time of need.

Guys, I'm generally supportive of Doug, but stuff like this gives me pause.

I think he's done a decent job drafting (when you think without Captain Hindsight with you, he did make choices that were understandable), picking up solid players like O Leary and J. Miller.

But some of the stuff like this kind of concerns me. GMs should make efforts to improve their team, and treating your best kicker in team history as an "outsider" is really strange.

I'll keep supporting the man, but stuff like this sticks with the fans. It will be interesting to see what this year's draft will do for his image.

Some of the stuff like what ? Really? Christie has credibility ? I guess Carpenter didn't want the help either he had 4-5 yrs to get help from Christie. If coaches can't do their job ? replace them OMG you Whaley haters are unreal. Listen ; Wgr and that listening audience need to understand that he is not going anywhere period. The owners can see he is a very good talent evaluator period. With no salary cap he signed two pro-bowl players in Alexander & Brown off the heap... I wish the last 4 past GM's could have done that.

  2. Cardale will be fighting for a roster spot this season but it will almost certainly be a PS spot.

    Assuming we keep Taylor:

    1. Bills will almost certainly add a vet QB to the roster to compete for the backup job as I can't imagine they will feel comfortable with a raw kid like Cardale going into camp as the primary competitor for the backup gig.

    2. In addition to that Vet, the Bills will likely add 2 more QBs to the roster before camp, and I assume one in the draft and probably an UDFA rookie.

Taylor will be the starter with the Vet and Cardale competing for the backup, and if Cardale doesn't win (and he likely wont) he will then be fighting for the PS spot as we aren't dressing 3 QB's on Sunday and he is going to have to compete for that spot with the likely rookie or rookies we add to camp too.

Personally I think he has almost no chance to make the active roster and is 50/50 to even make the PS and odds could worsen if we grab a quality rookie prospect that is more polished this year. Wouldn't surprise me to see him and someone like Chad Kelly battling it out for the PS roster spot as I think we could grab Kelly in the 5th this year.

With no 4th round pick, and several holes in the secondary, a big need at WR and RT, I just don't think the Bills will use either of the first 3 picks on a QB and then look to add a prospect in the 5th. Kelly makes a lot of sense there and I think Cardale's ability to make the PS will come down to a battle between those 2. Cardale has a lot of tools to like, but if he doesnt show enough improvement it wouldn't shock me to see him cut.

If we keep Tyrod we will not draft a QB. We will not add another QB via free agency. Cordale will become the back up and continue with his development

  3. again, I'd be fine with this. The guy is an idiot. But plays with heart. If he is upset with the guy that is the only reason he is a Bill and upset because Ryan is gone than we don't need someone who isn't committed to this team. Of course, this is all rumor from you. But, I have never been a fan of McCoy. There has been one top level RB in 6-7 yrs that was available and the was Zeke Elliot. Rest are dime a dozen. His cut on a dime doesn't mean a thing. A FA in a run friendly environment can equal McCoys stats.

Just stupid to cut him for nothing after Whaley gave away a young cheap talent and more importantly signed him unnecessarily to an extension

Whaley gave the eagles crap( Busted up Kiko ) he was a genius in that trade. Why cut a playmaker when you can cut both Kyle Williams and Eric woods saving us close to 14 mill in cap space

  4. That's not true. Cowherd went off on the Bills for giving money to TT and compared it with the money they threw at Fitz. Something to the effect of they obviously don't know what they are doing. On that we can all agree.

Cowherd should have went off on the Houston Texans not the Bills because giving Oswilder that money was a terrible job by the GM . People this is not a bad contract for the Bills Face it guys TT was consistently missing wide open players for no reason at all. I had a chance to look at 13 games on all 22. If wasn't for his running we would shipped him out by the 3rd game. A QB can't keep missing that many wide open receivers , TE and backs. If they don't honor contract it will be due to his play

  5.

I actually like Whaley, but I think Whaley would be making a colossal mistake letting TT go this year. He is going to lose the support of the vets like you said because it will a signal of blowing it up and rebuilding rather than looking to get this team to the next step. This team was one of the top scoring teams in the NFL with TT at the helm and while dealing with critical injuries to our best playmakers on offense. I just can't see how the best direction of this team is abandoning TT for a raw Cardale who didn't show anything close to ready in week 17, or a QB in this marginal QB class at best.

In a speculative note as well...the possibility of being able to trade up next year for a guy like Sam from USC could be in play. I mean looking across the NFL, the odds are someone like Cleveland or SF will probably end up with the first pick next year anyway, those rosters are pretty bad...but both are expected to go after a QB of the future in this draft (Cleveland I think actually fills it with Jimmy G). So trading up to their pick could be feasible (although expensive) and they may not be looking to grab a QB just like how the Rams traded out of their pick to Washington for RG3 because they felt they had their guy of the future already.

Bottom line: If the Bills take a QB in first 2 rounds and have gotten rid of Taylor...i will hate the decision. But, that being said, I will root for the kid hard to succeed and prove the move worthy...unlike others around here who just root for certain players to fail so they can be right about their agenda.

Whaley could care less about this group. They should have played better . If everyone agree that Tyrod is not worth 27 mil then you go with the prospects on your roster. Not go grab projects to make fans happy this crap about Romo or MaCarron need to stop that's crap your good ole boys GM's would drum up that why we been putrid for 14 yrs Levy, Butler, Donohue and Buddy Nix picking & binging in crazy crap. I didn't hear anyone say fire them. We finally have a staff that Whaley envisioned from his Pittsburg days like Tomlin we have in Mcdermitt a no nonsense intelligent coach who brought a staff of teachers.

As for Kyle Williams who has been part of the losing his whole career I have no problem with him retiring or buffalo trading him. Its time for his 8 mil cap hit to come off the books. This is a very strong defensive draft that is where the focus should be. They should go hard after Pryor III and Josh Gordan why because they are play makers and will come cheaper than paying the free agent WR we have on roster.

  6. TBN Jerry Sullivan: hogan-emergence-crowning-insult-bills (unlinked on purpose!)

Hogan's "emergence"? Honestly? One freak playoff game and Jerry's calling him the next coming of Jerry Rice? "crowning insult"? Did the Pats steal the Superbowl appearance from the Bills because they took this WR from them? Oh yeah, that's a no Jerry. "N" "O" Jerry, put it together. This was no robbery.

Sullivan should be FIRED. He has no JUDGEMENT. Was Hogan even worthy of consideration as a pro-bowl alternate? And who got a pro-bowl start? Lorenzo Alexander. Are raiders nation crying about it? Cardinals? Or the perpetually mediocre despite the dollars spent Washington Redskins? Do you think they'd love to have the tackles and sacks LA had this past year? How about Jerry Hughes? Are Pats lamenting the loss of this talent? Heck no.

Hogan is a marginal talent at best. On a team that's known for not paying for talent (see Jamie Collins) Hogan's production this past year must be a disappointment for the dollars they paid him - 6th highest paid Pat in terms of cap. 38 balls for 680 yards, in a year when Gronk was missing most of the season. That's 15% of total receiving production. Or 11% of total offensive production. and you gave your 6th highest salary for this? Ouch! For a stingy team this has to hurt.

Heck any turtle with hands would have caught the 40 balls Hogan caught from Brady. Heck Jerry (Sullivan, not Rice) could have caught those 40 balls. So this was a win Jerry. We shafted Pats by forcing them to pay for Hogan.

Honestly, in a season of near-miss disappointments, Hogan was the least of the issues.

And oh yeah, Jerry, Hogan's old news. That was a week ago Jerry. Might as well have been last century.

Get over it Jerry. Time to move on. Hogan's a marginal talent. Players like him come and go faster than sailors making port calls in the NFL. I had to go dig up that analogy from 19th century you ancient anachronism. That ship's sailed. Got that one Jerry?

    Cheers!

    nice

  7. I'm convinced this kid can become the QB Bills fans have yearned for for 2 decades.

His pocket presence, movement within the pocket to get off his throws, arm strength and accuracy are all pluses. I love the way he steps up in the pocket. It's why I hated Blaine Gabbert and Jared Goff as prospects. They were both terrible in the face of pressure, often times dropping their eyes and staring at the rush. That's a deal breaker for me....if I see that in a QB I don't think he has a shot at being any good in the NFL.

With Mahomes you have a guy who keeps his eyes up, steps up, and delivers very impressive accurate balls all over the field. He's 6'3", 230 lbs., he's the real deal and the Bills need to take a roll of the dice on him at #10. Does he have some quirky footwork and odd hitches? Yes. But, I truly believe this guy is going to be a future stud NFL QB.

    http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/patrick-mahomes-1/gamelog/2016/

Go get this guy Doug! Please! Deliver us from QB purgatory!

    Get a grip

  8. Gotta admit i know nothing about Castillo. Anyone?

only thing I know about Castillo is he is not better than what we already have in Cromer. We don't need a run game coordinator we are ready are the two time rushing champion .... Cromer is already here WTF

He was an absolute disaster as DC in Philadelphia. OL Coach is his strength and he's very good at that.

we have someone better on staff in Cromer .... We need defensive help not run game help

  9. Then the Bills need to pull a Sammy Watkins and trade up.

If your going to do it, it's for a franchise QB. 6'3, 215 lbs. Averaged 4100 passing yards and 36 TDs last two seasons as well as 850 yards and 10 TDs in the ground. He has also played 29 games the last two seasons so hitting the rookie "wall" would be less likely.

He's as elusive as Taylor but bigger and has a stronger arm. No issues throwing down the field. He's performed big time in big time games, and there isn't a bigger pressure situation than being 2 yards from the end zone with a handful of seconds left to win or lose the national championship.

Him and Watkins would make a dynamic tandem with the same college ties.

It might cost a kings ransom, but the alternative of not finding a franchise QB would probably limit DW time in Buffalo any ways so might as well go all in.

I will continue to develop the QB we have on THE ROSTER. We have a QB on the roster that won big games to become CFB champions, beating both Alabama and Oregon with Mariotta.

    Here is his story http://cbsprt.co/2ic6Was

  10. If we don't keep Tyrod we need a veteran presence to compete with Cardale or a potential draft pick. Hoyer is injury prone but has shown some positive things when healthy. QB rating in the 90's in 17 starts the last two years with 25 TD's to 7 INT's. 4 starts this year, before breaking his arm early in his 5th start vs GB. 4 full games games, all over 300 yards passing, 3 games with 2 TD's, no picks. He got his shot with Cleveland, Houston, and Chicago. Not exactly juggernaut offenses. Stat line is trending up fast. I would love to bring Hoyer into the competition.

heck no if we need garbage we could keep EJ

  11. I must be missing something on Kirk Cousins. I'm a big fan, I think he's a very good QB and I can't understand why the Skins haven't signed him yet. I'm starting to think he might hit the open market from what I've read. Does anyone think there's a real chance he hits the market and we sign him? I think Kirk could lead us to the playoffs.

They don't feel they same as you do in DC. They feel he is adequate but they will not do an Oswilder type deal.

  12. I understand your point, but wanted to chime in for those that don't: while Whaley did not draft any of the players that you listed, Kelsay, Schoebel and Whitner were all very good, not great players. I never understood why Chris Kelsay and Aaron Schoebel took so much heat from fans. The thing that made people unfairly hate on Whitner was that they passed on Haloti Ngata to take Whitner - dumb move, but not Whitner's fault.

That was the problem you actually thought they were good thus giving buddy nix . john butler marv levy a pass.... Whaley taking unnecessary heat for nothing as far as I'm concern

  13. Although not disturbed by Rex's firing (defense went south and poor game time decisions), I think the problem starts with Whaley.

For the year, we've been hit by the spin that were a quality team without discipline. Really, what's so talented about our defense.

I don't pretend to be an expert on this or remember all the moves, so please chime in with more.

    1) Drafting EJ Manuel 1st and never realizing that he's not a player... (Continuing to fail to realize that EJ has neither escapability, pocket presence, or accuracy)

    2) Spending a fortune on Dareus, who barely plays

    3) Doubling down on EJ by giving up multiple first round picks for Watkins

    4) Getting and then keeping Karlos WIlliams (lost Fred Jackson instead)

    5) Drafting Shaq with a bum shoulder

    6) Percy Harvin not just once, but twice

    7) Not prioritizing quarterbacks in draft picks (besides EJ)

If that's all you have. I'm in good shape . I thought you were going to say draft Kelsay , schoebal ,maybin ,whitner or maybe pay oswilder 125 mil to sit the bench.... People are incredible too funny

  14. Sully is spot on. People are delusional if they don't think Whaley is a major problem.

    He's drafted poorly.

Mismanaged the roster and our cap space.

We have little to no depth

We have 24 free agents and little cap space in which to properly replace them and fill holes

Trades draft picks like they grow on trees.

I don't want this guy selecting our next HC and choosing our next QB.

Stop sully you wrote the article already . Its obvious you do very little research

My head is going to explode, I actually agree with some of what Sullen has to say:

"That's when it really hit me how poor a job General Manager Doug Whaley has done building an NFL roster through the draft, and how little he did to help Rex Ryan in his second and, ultimately, final season as the Bills' head coach. . . .

That's a pretty miserable effort. And while things could get better down the road, it flies in the face of the notion – pushed by Whaley and team ownership – that he gave Ryan some kind of playoff roster this season.

Well, Ryan is gone. The team that failed to show up against the Jets for Lynn is Whaley's baby now. It's all on him. No one else to blame for all the misguided moves and financially bloated roster that bumbled its way to a 17th straight non-playoff season. "

You believe the crap Sully puts out because you want to believe . If you did the research you would see most of the sports dept for the Buffalo News are liars plan and simple

  15. Sorry buddy trying to equate Sabers to Bills is like you trying to sit at the adult table during Thanksgiving. The Sabers will always be at the little tykes table. I need better seats anyway. So my simpletons don't renew your seasons because I am looking for better seats . The 50 yard line would be nice .....

You Whaley haters are too funny :D:D:D:D:D

  16. I am sorry Little Timmie and the rest of the snooze that you dont have access to the grow up table which is the NFL. You are just not worthy.

Who cares what you think or conjure up. The Buffalo News and Wgr for that matter need to stay in thier little toddler lane and continue writing puff pieces about the sabres. You wouldn't know football talent if it smack you in the face
