  1. These are the guys that, IMO, can be solid starters or better, if not now then soon.

    77 Bell, Demetrius OL 6-5 307 25 2 Northwestern State University

    73 Chambers, Kirk OL 6-7 315 31 6 Stanford

    61 Gaddis, Christian OL 6-1 300 25 2 Villanova

    Green, Cornell OL 6-6 315 33 12 Central Florida

    63 Hangartner, Geoff OL 6-5 301 27 6 Texas A&M

    74 Hennessey, Nick OL 6-5 291 23 R Colgate

    67 Levitre, Andy OL 6-2 305 23 2 Oregon State

    69 Meredith, Jamon OL 6-5 304 23 2 South Carolina

    76 Ramsey, Andre OL 6-5 322 22 2 Ball State

    66 Watkins, Jason OL 6-6 325 24 1 Florida

    70 Wood, Eric OL 6-4 315 24 2 Louisville

It looks like LT DB, LG AL, C GH, RG EW, RT CG. DB needs to be upgraded and if the Bills can get a starting LT out of the draft they could swing DB to the right side and if he can stay healthy might start to shine or at least provide decent depth at both T positions. GH is a liability where he is right now but I don't think they can move Wood to C yet due to his injury.

I was gonna try to refute your argument about the quality of OL but looking at it closely, you're just about right.

I think Bell is still a reach as being a solid starter. The guy got owned last yr, penalized way too often, and is too inconsistent. Meredeth has the potential within a yr or 2. And I think Wood and Levitre are solid.

We need a new LT, a better center, and can definitely afford to upgrade the RT position.

  2. We start off by trading our 2nd rd pick to Baltimore for Gaither.

Pick 9 rolls along, and teams (hopefully) come a callin. We wind up trading down to #28 (I know its a big drop, but hear me out) and receive their 2nd (60) and Shawne Merriman. Maybe a dream, maybe not too far off if we add a player or lower rd pick. Anyways, we got our LT and an OLB and still have a 1st and 2nd round pick. so here goes:

1.(28): Tim Tebow/Terrence Cody: We would need to take Tebow this high in order to get him IMO, if hes even still on the board. I honestly think he may be gone, If he is we go Terrence Cody here and shore up the NT position.

2.(60): Cam Thomas/Jared VeldHeer: If we get Tebow we got to go NT now. Thomas is there, grab him. If not the Linval Joseph wouldnt be bad. If we get Cody in round 1, go OT again and grab Jard Veldheer.

3.(72): Dorin Dickerson, WR/TE, Pittsburgh: Big guy, could be a QB best friend.

4.(107): Eric Norwood ILB South Carolina: Need LB help still, this kid is good.

5:(140): John Skelton QB Fordham: If we get Tebow or Skelton is gone, grab best OL available here

    6:(178): Best OLB available

6:(192): Best Player available here on out

This for me would be a dream draft day, er weekend, for the Bills. We may ACTUALLY have a decent start to a winning team then.

    What say you?

If the Bills did this I would be pissed. We need to draft higher for OT help. The guys we have just aint cutting it. Also, this is a big reach for Tebow....shoot a high second round pick is a reach for him. He's a great talent and leader, but is going to require time to develop...at least a 2 yrs. First round should be the best OT available. Iknow its boring, but it's easy to lose site of how bad our O-line was this past yr...and everyone knew it going in due to the lack of emphasis placed on it over the yrs.

I like the Eric norwood pick. The guy is a playmaker for SC, despite the negative reviews post cmbine on him.

  3. The guy was undisciplined and was released from the Rams because he hurt them more than he helped them.

Killer instinct is having a mean streak, but being able to control it and use it to your advantage. Yes, once again this creates another hole on the OL. This guy is average at best, and can be replaced.

What I'm surprised about is the fan reaction. Where was the backlash when they let Peters leave town?..and that guy had talent.

  4. I have been a Bills fan since the very beginnings in the 1960's. I have been through the AFL glory days, the Super Bowl years and all the lean years as well. Lately I have been reading this forum and it makes me sick. If you guys hate the organization so much, then it is time to find another team. All the ridiculing and ignorance does not speak well for those of you that insist on taking that attitude. I want the team to win as much as anyone. I am as frustrated as you are, but part of being a fan is sticking behind your team in good times and bad. These are the bad ones. If you want to leave then go ahead and find another team, but please stop polluting this site with your negativity. As for Chan Gailey, from what I have read, he is a good man and a good coach. He has had a winning record in every stint as a head coach except one year in Division II college football. He has coached in all facets of the game and been successful doing so. If I am a GM and look at coaching resumes, this guy is highly qualified and certainly the most well respected candidate among other coaches of those that were considered. He is a man of character and integrity. For my money, it was a good hire. Screw the national media. Since when do they know anything? Especially about Buffalo. If you are worried about what others think of the city and the franchise, then you will never be happy, because there will always be bigots that ridicule Buffalo, because they don't know any better. I have a suggestion. Enjoy the games. Even the ones we lose. Is it frustrating? Yes. Is it painful? Yes. Guess what, that's all part of living and breathing with your team. Go Bills!

Dude, I agree with you in many ways...the negativity gets old. I may not enjoy the games they lose, unless it was a good game. the Bills just haven't been playing good interesting football lately.

As for the negativity, some people just aren't ever going to be happy unless they're complaining about something. You're not going to change them...those that complain all the time are most likely miserable, and the Bills just help remind them how bad life is for them.

Hopefully better days are ahead of us, so lets see what happens. If the Bills continue to suck, nobody is holding a gun to their head saying they have to watch or support this team....

  5. not true. i am from here, i played football and i loved playing in the cold, snow, rain, sleet, whatever. it makes a difference if you grow up with it.

But you don't play pro ball....and you do do it it 5-7 days a week, dealing with the aches a pains of an adult who just finished colliding with 300lb men.....as a kid I loved playing in the snow, mud and rain too...that doesn't make it any more appealing to do it as a living.

Before we go too far down this rabbit hole, I think we all agree that your point that being a southerner, and scouting southern players being a bad thing is wrong.

  6. the kids from the south and west do NOT want to be here. look, i went to college in the south. i have had these conversations with actual college football players. they DREAD playing in our weather. they DREAD living here. although they may not verbalize it, the vast majority of players from warm weather climates share willis mcgahee's take on our area. they HATE it here

Everyone hates playing in the cold and wet...norhterner or southerner.

the weather is not the main problem...losing and playing for a team that isn't exactyl known for taking care of it's players financially is.

Chicago and Green Bay are colder than Buffalo. New England might be too. They still manage to get players from all over the country.

Aaron Schobel, who happens to be from the south too, is concerned more about playing for a losing team than about playing in bad weather.

  7. fourth, he is a southerner. odds are he will prefer southern players since he grew up there, coached at tenn chat and has connections to the colleges in that part of the country. those aren't the types of players who perform well in our climate. those aren't the types of players who want to play in our climate or even live in this climate. sure, they may stick it out and be civil for their initial contracts but why would southerners re-sign with the buffalo bills? it is rare when it happens.

you ding him because he's a southerner who's familiar with southern football players....which happens to be where there's a ton of great football talent? that's ridiculous. Southern players adapt just fine to nothern climates. Here's a short list great players who have adapted.

    Brett Favre

    Reggie White

    Cornelius Bennet

    Thurman Thomas

I could go on. I simply think your point is not valid. I would argue that having a foothold in scouting SEC players is a good thing since they tend to crank out plenty of top notch NFL talent.

People need to understand that Buffalo needs to offer:

    1. Plenty of money

    2. An opportunity to win

No offense, but there are only a handful of players that are going to want to go to the Buffalo Bills for the great wings, and lovely weather.

  8. FILL IN THE BLANK is not coming here, and this is why it won't happen.....I really do not understand why all of these loser writers/washed up NFL player TV personalities and NFL "guru's" get their rocks off by bashing Buffalo and giving their ****ty two cents. I mean wow, how original are these turds? The modern era of 24 hour sports updates are really starting to get on my nerves because it really exposes the lack of intelligence and professionalism in the media today who don't require facts before putting it on paper. Sorry, I am just sick of it all!

Who cares about what they think. If the big brains at OBD had the cahones they would get a young coach, surround him with a talented coaching staff, and work on building a long term foundation in their front office. To often the HC gets too much blame or too much credit. Does anyone think Jim Caldwell, or Mike Tomlin are great coaches. They have a solid supporting foundation. THATs what the Bills need to be working on.

  9. Buffalo doesn't have the worst o-line in the NFL, at least not according to the stats.

And yes, it I believe it does matter who you have behind the line. Do you honestly believe that Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, or Ben Roethlisberger (I pick them not only because they're elite QBs, but also because they have average-at-best running games) wouldn't do significantly better behind Buffalo's OL than Edwards and Fitzpatrick? I'd like to point out, at this time, that Buffalo's sacks given up went down by almost 2 sacks/game (3.28 vs. 1.45) in games that Fitzpatrick played--which tells me that at least a decent chunk of the pass protection problems comes from Edwards being unable to sense a pass rush. To boot, of the teams Edwards faced (NE, TB, NO, Mia, Cle, and NYJ--for 1 quarter), only Miami ranks in the top half of the league in sacks, so it's not as if he faced teams that pressure the QB consistently. I'm not talking up Fitzpatrick here, because I don't think he's good either, but a QB has to be able to sense pocket pressure, and clearly Edwards has an issue with it.

Great QBs prosper in spite of poor line play. Roethlisberger did it in 2008 when Pittsburgh gave up 49 sacks and went on to win the Superbowl, Brady did it in 2007 by going 18-1 even when the Patriots line play completely broke down toward the end of the season (they gave up only 5 more sacks than the Bills did that year--an average of 0.31 sacks/game--while Buffalo finished 11th in the NFL in fewest sacks allowed, and only won 7 games), Roethlisberger did it in 2005 when Pittsburgh gave up 47 sacks and won the Superbowl, and Philadelphia gave up 37 sacks (1 less than Buffalo) in 2004 when they won the NFC Championship.

My point is simply that great QB play trumps OL play. I'll stop grandstanding about it now, as I'm sure most of you have read my feelings on this topic (and the associated myriad of data) before. I guess it just makes more sense to me to find a franchise QB first. Look at how awesome New Orleans' offense is, and they're starting a 4th round pick at LT, a 5th round college tackle at LG, someone else's 5th round pick from 2002 at C, a 4th round pick at RG, and a 2nd round pick at RT. I dare say it's the QB that makes it all work.

    Just my 1 cent.

With all things being equal, I would say yes you are correct. A great QB might do OK with a bad O-line...BUT all things aren't equal. The Bills have basic offensive scheme. One that other teams have figured out. They have a below average and unimaginative head coach. From what I've seen, the Oline coach follows in the mold of Jauron...doesn't exactly get the most from his players. Additionally, Pittsburg has the benefit of the Steel curtain. Brady has the benefit of Belicheck and an above average O-line...one that exemplifies continuity. The Saints have Sean Payton. By comparing the sack statistics of other teams to that the Bills is comparing apples to oranges. The success of those teams are not soley attributed to the quality of the QB they drafted. Its a collective product of coaching, personnel, and scheme.

  10. I don't see why you would bother talking about drafts and free agents as long as Tom Modrak and John Guy are still employed by the Bills.

Question: Recently fired Browns GM Kokinis was with a successful Ravens team for some 13 years as a Pro Player guy. Was he successful at that post? If so, I would replace Guy with Kokinis.

Buddy Nix can assume Tom Modrak's old post as Director of Scouting.

then it would be time to move Russ 'Barnum & Bailey' Brandon back to what he seems to do so well- marketing at COO.

Hire a real, proven, football GM (Allen, Wolf, Reese), and then allow the football people who know what they are doing (note: I did not mention any "hot" coordinator or unproven college coach) to implement a plan on getting this team back to the playoffs.

If Allen were GM I could see Gruden coaching here. If Wolf or Reese were involved I could see a Shottenheimer.

But until real football men are in the front office, it is no use talking about the draft or free agents as the outcome will be the same.

Oh, and that includes Michael Vick.

You sir, have hit the nail on the head...until OBD hires a good football guy, then we will be stuck with 1 yr, "hope springs eternal" fixes....just enough to sell plenty of season tickets.

Otherwise, you'll continue to see the headscatching personnel decision rolling out of OBD...and the accompanying pitchers of kool-aid. there is a reason Jauron is still there. There is a reason we keep seeing good FAs go, and mediocre FA coming in. There is a reason we (and the talking heads) scatch their heads every year concerning draft day decisions. It's because this team has no plan other than getting butts into the seats for one more season.

I sound negative, because I'm frustrated. This organization has done the same thing every year for teh past ten years. They manage to have me talking (and many others) talking about what needs to be done to fix the team the following year...and guess what? It's only week 10 in the NFL...

  11. I dunno I somehow feel like Rivers,Roethlisburger,Brees,Rodgers, guys like that would still find a way to have success behind our O line. You know guys who are actually ahhh talented. I heard being talented really helps at this whole football thing.

OK...now couple our Oline with an unimaginative offensive scheme...and a conservative headcoach...

Nope. i don't think any of those guys would have success on this team.

  12. I am of the belief that you need to build your team from the trenches out, but that being said, I'm not sold on Trent. If Trent continues to struggle, would you go with a top lineman for the Offensive Line, or do you go with a top QB like Bradford or McCoy? If you take the line and stick with Edwards or a FA the QB play may be awful next season, but the line would be improved, OR do you go top QB in the draft and worry about the line in the future?

How can you not improve on the NFLs worst O-line before you do anything else? I think this is a no brainer...because it doesn't matter if you have Joe Montana and Walter Payton behind our O line...this team is not going to be successful until it builds a good foundation...which includes a decent headcoach, O coordinator, and personnel shop.

We scratch our heads every year on personnel decisions because bad personnel people are making bad personnel decisions. Until Mr Wilson makes a change within his organization you count count on the Dick Jauron/Aaron Maybin/Alex Van Pelt-like decisions to continue.

  13. Baltimore Ravens

    Points Allowed -- 130

    Sacks -- 14

    Int -- 7

    Fumb Rec -- 2

    Def TD's -- 2

    Buffalo Bills

    Points Allowed -- 130

    Sacks -- 16

    Int -- 13

    Fumb Rec. -- 2

    Def TD's -- 2

I thought this was interesting when I saw these stats.. I think the Bills D is much improved in the "playmaking" aspect. I know many people were complaining about that last year. At least one thing got fixed with this team.

It's interesting because the defense is the main reason we have 3 wins. This defense has been hung out to dry more than once, yet they seem to still fight back abnd hang in there. If the offense can get anythign going in the near future, the Bills might actually have a chance.

  14. I think the tackles by linebackers are a direct reflection of the DL playing in front of them...just becuase Ellison has a lot of sacks doesn't mean he's really bad (b/c teams are targeting him), or he's really good. It just goes to show you that Stroud, Williams and company are doing enough to keep the O line fom getting to the second level. If Whitner, Byrd, or one of our DBs was leading the team in tackles, then that would be a bad sign.

All in all, I think Ellison is an average player, who seems to be in the right place at the right time (good football IQ), and benefitting from some decent D line play.

  15. It's no secret. He isn't ready to play in the NFL yet. But at least he is gaining experience during this completely pointless season. Don't expect to see him become a game changer anytime soon. He is more like money in the bottom of the sock drawer, just forget we have him and maybe one day you be surprised when you find him.

We didn't need a guy to come in and gain experience. We needed a guy to come in an immediate impact rushing the passer. This team needs every little bit of advantage it can get, and Maybin just getting experience doesn't help.

  16. of all the players in the country ..he was chosen 11th...--not giving up on the guy--and I know it takes time--but its disturbing how little he has shown.

i've seen him in on a few plays, and all he seems to do is that little dip, up-the field rush...most often it looks like he's just getting pushed outside of the play.

I personnally never liked the idea of a borderline 250lb DE. As a LB, similar to Terrel Suggs, I think would be a better fit....but 250lbs for a DE, playing against 310lb lineman is just waay too small. There are a few guys that can make it happen at that weight (Jason Taylor, John Braham), but I'm not so sure about Maybin.

  17. Here is how the Texans have done so far this season:

    Vs. Jets L 24-7

    @ Titans W 34-31

    Vs. Jaguars L 31-24

    Vs. Raiders W 29-6

    @ Cardinals L 28-21

    @ Bengals W 28-17

    Vs. 49'ers W 24-21

The Texans are a difficult team to understand. No doubt they have talent. They lost a pair of heartbreakers to the Jaguars & Cardinals, but beat the Bengals after Cincy's big upset over Pittsburgh. They had a 21-0 lead over the 49'ers at halftime, and had to hang on to win 24-21. Did you all know that the 49'ers put Alex Smith in at QB during the 2nd half?

I think the Bills defense can beat any team.

The offense is another story. I dread the thought of how our O-Line will be against Mario Williams.

they are inconsistent...the same way they were last yr.

  18. I've asked the same question the last 2 weeks and things have turned out good...Can we actually beat the Texans at home? I haven't been following them much this year, but I hear Slaton is a beast.

Crossing my fingers to go 4-4 heading into the bye.

    go Bills!

We have a shot. Our pass d is solid. Our run D plays well in spurts. the scoring D is most important, and we are playing pretty well considering the imcompetence of the offense. I like our chance to get a little bit of offensive momentum, building on solid D- play, coupled with home field advantage...I like the Bills to pull out the game.

  19. It's hard to fathom that a QB with Owens and Evans would throw so often to his backs and TE's.

Yeah, it would be something if we kept the chains moving, but we don't. Also, it is more than frustrating when you keep seeing Derek Fine targeted for dumpoff 3 yrd out passes....If you're throwing to Derek Fine when you have TO and Lee Evans, something is wrong....whether it is scheme, QB play, or coaching...you can't settle for throwing to Derek fine.

  20. The things I liked about fitz:

    1. He seem to move a little better in the pocket, and didn't his head ripped off. Pass protection is not just the O-line's job.

    2. He gave his wide recievers a chance. I'm tired of seeing 2 studs on offense not even get a sniff of the ball, becuase that's not what the defense is giving us.

I don't think Fitz was anything special, but he's also done just enough to eke out 2 wins. that's the bottom line.

  21. I really like the way our defense has been playing. If the offense pulled anything out of the hat against the Saints, they could have shut Brees and company down too.

Hopefully the offense will just get better from here on out. The O-line is getting some time to gel, and the defense is keeping them in games. This is a recipe to build up momentum as the season rolls on...so we'll see.
