  1. They have likely to make 2 first downs instead of 1 if we don't bring that ball out.

I'll take the strong odds we don't fumble, instead of curling up and being afraid to play football.

How is manning up and picking up 2 first downs afraid to play football. Your talking about running the ball out from 5 yards deep in the endzone with your hands team on the field at a critical time in the game. When your fielding it that deep, you need to get it out of the shadow of your goal line, for one, and the kicking team usually has a bead on you around the 15, and with your hands team on, you've got no blocking. If you need to pick up an extra first down then DO IT!! How is that conservative. And the fact that McKelvin put it on the ground earlier, to me, means its a risk. Obviously those odds weren't so strong, cuz... it happened.

  2. Run out the clock?

There was at least two first downs needed to run out the clock had McKelvin not fumbled.

Your telling me we would've done that on the New England Patriots?

    Nope.

The team/organization just doesn't know how to win. It needs change. But many of us said that last January, and no one at OBD listened.

Yes, run out the clock. The Bills were actually moving the ball with some degree of consistency, tonight. If not for some ill timed dropsies, it would have looked even better. NE appeared to be having a hell of a time defending those screens. Are you telling me that taking a knee in the endzone and sticking with what was working wouldn't have been preferable to taking the risk of exactly what happened happening. At the very least you punt afterward and the Pats* have to go the length of the field and score a TD instead of twenty five frickin' yards.

  3. ...Instead of sticking to the gameplan, and letting your offense that has moved the ball every time that they had it win the game, you try to make something out of absolutely nothing and lose the game.

This is what is eating at me right now. Regardless of the :06 left on the clock before the two minute warning, as numerous people have pointed out earlier your hands team is in there... AND you are ripping off chunks of yardage with screens, draws, delayed handoffs, and consistently doing this while running the play clock down to the last :03 seconds... TAKE THE KNEE AND PICK UP THE EXTRA GODDAMN FIRST DOWN LIKE A REAL TEAM. If you don't, PUNT THE BALL AND TAKE YOUR CHANCES. McKelvin had no business, whether it was a coaches decision or his own, running that ball out from 5 yards deep in the endzone!! Not in this game under those circumstances!!

  4. I just saw on ESPN News that Michael Crabtree is going to sit out the entire year, and re-enter the draft in 2010.

I wonder where he will go, still Top 10? I doubt so with his attitude. However, when he drops, he will go to a better team where he will likely have better success. I think he is making a very big mistake, the 49ers seem headed in a good direction. What are your thoughts on Crabtree's decision.

Also, I just saw that Pisa Tinoisimoa got hurt. Not sure what the extent of the injury is, Lovie Smith just said in his press conference that he suffered an injury and will be re-evaluated. I think Ellison, Harris and Palmer are better options than this guy, had we signed him in the off-season.

A year away from football worked real well for Maurice Clarrett and Mike Williams (ughh, not THAT MIke Williams.) What was that saying about those who fail to learn from history...

  5. No the Front office shouldn't have retained him in the first place nor anyone but April on the staff. But it's all moot point now. I guess we need our next HC and OC to want a light, more mobile OL or we are going to be out of luck.

Hopefully our next staff will be about maximizing the potential of the players around them instead of a systems coach (which would guarantee another year or two of rebuilding to get the roster to fit their needs.)

  6. Donaldson is an out of the ball park homer.

You know, Donaldson is just one of those self servient losers who doesn't follow or care about anyone in the NFL but the mighty Patriots and just assumes that since we lose by 20-30 points to them every time we play them that we must do that in all of our games.

Good thing this guy is a columnist and not an on air personality, cuz it would be awfully difficult to convey objectivity with "Tom Terrific's*" c*&k in his mouth.

  7. Ok so what happens when Jauron and company are fired? What if the next HC/OC want Big linemen to put a hat on a hat and pound the ball with marshawn? Bad planning with a HC on the hot seat

Not what you want to hear, but I doubt the thread that DJ's career is hanging from is as thin as we fans would like to think it is. I get the impression that if the team shows progress, which is a very subjective term, that he will be back.

  8. How many TDs did we score against "more average D's" in preseason?

After the Bills preseason game against the Steelers, I looked into how the Titans', Packers', Bears', and Steelers' Ds had fared to that point in preseason. In 12 games they had given up a combined total of 10 points in the first quarter, and leaving out the Titans, not one of the other three had allowed more than 10 points in the first half. In fact, in 16 quarters of football, the Pack, Bears, and Steelers had given up only 25 points combined. The point that we played against good defensive teams is valid... though our offense did pad those stats.

  9. "Mr. cmjoyce113, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

"If there is any attempt for either contestant to cheat, especially with cmjoyce113, who is a dirty, dirty, tramp, I am just gonna snap. Do I make myself clear?"

  10. The truth lies somewhere in this thread. After 3 games the Bills will be 0-3, 1-2, 2-1, or 3-0 and DJ will be coaching the team or he will be fired. At this point I've dropped the unrealistic expectation that this is a playoffs or bust season for DJ and the Bills (which happened to coincide with the unofficial confirmation that the team is heavily rebuilding this season effective 10 days before the start of the season.) With lowered expectations I am free to enjoy the season without frustration, and might just be pleasantly surprised by the outcome. They might just look like a team by the end of this year, who knows. By doing all of this now, hopefully they identify a few glaring needs for the offseason while seeing if the young guys can play.

  11. I dont know how the offense would look with the WR's standing 10 yards off the line.

Hey, don't they do that in arena league football? I think that would be funny as hell to see our man in motion essentially getting a ten yard headstart to build up speed. Can't be any less effective than the last 6 regular season games, or all of preseason.

  12. Ralph Wilson's answer to the question recently "What will happen if Jauron starts 0-5?"

    "Hope he doesn't start 0-6"

Doesn't seem like Jauron is in any danger...

I initially thought DJ firing Schonert was done out of desperation in an effort to keep his job. Given the fact that he then appointed AVP to OC, cut LW and intends to go with Bell at LT, I'm now wondering if he didn't get some sort of assurance from RW regarding his job security. These just don't seem like the kind of "win now" moves someone would be making if their ass was on the line. :)

  13. After the firing of Schonert I was of the opinion that Jauron was making a desperate move to save his job. Cutting Walker, promoting AVP, and the apparent expansion of the youth movement in giving the LT spot to Bell has me concerned. Has anyone else started getting the uneasy feeling that Jauron may have gotten some assurances with regard to the security of his job? You can't possibly make these moves when your ass is on the line, can you? :)

  14. B(ill)B(elichick*) Fan 4LIFE,

you have outed yourself. No true Bills fan could wish for the embarrassment of the team they root for, because, regardless of what you think of the FO, coaches, or players, deep down you want them to succeed because when you invest your time and emotion in a team it HURTS when they don't. Outwardly rooting against them should enrage true fans. You're that A@#HOLE in the stands that harps on one player, or one call, or one WHATEVER and ruins the game for the rest of us. I have no delusions of where the team is headed this year, but MAN am I hoping they surprise me. I can tolerate when people get down on moves that seemingly make no sense from the fans perspective, or when players are stinkin' up the joint, or when coaches don't seem to have a clue. And I have loudly bemoaned moves I thought they should have or shouldn't have made. I hope for the best with this team despite frequently expecting the worst. You or anyone else who actually calls themself a Bills fan and then has the audacity to publicly hope for them to spectacularly fail can PISS OFF! :)

  15. U are right about fixing the lines first which they likely failed to do at Left Tackle...which is only the most important position on the team possibly! I thought the Bills would address that with one of the two first round picks they had! I figured they should've grabbed DE Orakpo and a OT...wasn't there a guy Eben Britton available? (Sry my college recognition of names isn't as strong)...hopefully that's right...I know there were other decent OT available as well....I like Levitre and Wood okay...but I don't know if the need was as great as Left OT and DE. Maybin may be good as well, but I also liked DE Everette Brown alot as well! We sure should have gotten the QB's blindside taken care of in the draft or free agency and I don't think that was achieved. I believe that will haunt us all year long and it could even help the staff & coach lose their jobs. Like u said why r we talking about QB's...if he has time Edwards may even b good, but we will never know that until he goes to another team next year.

As far as LT, I think the coaches were high on Bell, so why bring in another LT when you could use the pick somewhere else on the line. It doesn't help us this year, necessarily, but neither would drafting one of the first or second round LTs. They would likely start the year at RT, anyway, and we would still have Walker at LT. Granted, if Bell doesn't turn out to be the player they think he is they will still need to shore up the position, but the draft is just as much of a crap shoot.

  16. Until they get this franchise straightened out, does it really matter what young QB we bring in to stunt his development? As other posters have pointed out on different threads, you need look no further than Steve Young in Tampa during the Bay of Pigs years versus Steve Young in SF, or Brett Favre in Atlanta versus Green Bay. I'm not saying our castoffs are potential HOFers, just not likely as bad as they seemed at the time. Situation is everything unless you are supremely talented.

  17. Not big on Dungy as I thought he always underachieved (it was HIS team Gruden won with) Also not big on Gruden. I think Marty is intriguing as is del rio who ive always respected but i gotta lean towards shanahan as my prefered choice since Cowher would Never come here (hope im wrong on that) More than anything i just want a coach that wont make me stand in my shower wondering how the hell he(Juaron) was our best bet and thinking great were gonna suck for another 3 years. Someone has it as a signature but PLAYOFFS OR IMPLOSION - enough with the mediocrity.

Not sayin' he'd be my first choice to blow it all up and start from scratch, more that given the players at hand he might be able to to more with it sooner as they fit a similar philosophy. Indy's not a bad model, though I'm not certain he could attain near the same success without Manning.

  18. I just finished reading that CBS Sports article by that Ratta guy, and he summed it up perfectly. Most of the article was admonishing Turk for his stupid way of voicing his opinions and how he basically ruined his own future in the NFL because of his comments. But this part of the article is my favorite:

"......On the grander scale, coaches canning offensive coordinators this close to showtime is a bad and cowardly idea, as it shows (a) that the head coach is under fire from up the know-littles and cowards upstairs and doesn't have the stones to stand up for his guy, (b) that the head coach wasn't paying attention and/or [c) needs a scapegoat.

In all cases, it is a sign of weakness that players understand and use when things go bad to deflect blame from their own failings. You start that circle, you go 4-12, and everyone's out the door......"

It may be your favorite, but don't take it out of context as he goes on to say, rightly so, that

"Schonert's case is different because it sounds mostly like he and Jauron couldn't agree on Jauron's offense, and that last adjective is the key. "Jauron's." This isn't even a matter of who knows more about offense, because we assume Schonert is the better versed of the two. It's about who has the say, and in no NFL operation, not even in Dallas, do the assistants dictate terms to the head coach."

This is also why I think that it was DJ's call on the firing, and not RW as some seem to think.

Edit: Slow typer, AJ1 beat me to it!

  19. its been said by more then one person that this was Ralph's decision and honestly, do you think it wasnt?

Honestly, I don't think it was Ralph's decision. I think DJ weighed his options which were 1) go into the season with TS as OC and almost unquestionably lose your job by week 5 OR 2) fire TS (who by his own admission had significant philisophical differences with DJ) and take your chances with AVP, and still likely lose your job.

This move reeks of desperation. RW is known to have wanted it at the end of last season. But from RW's standpoint, the timing makes even less sense. It would be like sabotaging the team you own on the eve of the season.

On top of that, TS goes on record ripping DJ after the firing. Then Ralph flies them all to MI to talk about it afterward. Seems more likely to me that this meeting was RW getting everyone in a room and asking WTF are you doing to my team... not something he would have to do if it was him making the call.

Take a look at this article and see if you think DJ didn't have reason to make this move on his own:
