  1. The official timeline is Nix was GM when EJ was drafted. Whaley became GM three weeks later. Use your imagination to create whatever narrative fits your view.

Don't forget everyone here wanted a QB first round in 2013,mostly Gino Smith or Ryan Nassib.

I have no doubt that the EJM pick was collaborative decision-making. Both Nix and Whaley have their fingerprints all over the selection and the way the roster unfolded over the seasons leading up to that pick.

  2.

Cool. I am not particularly glad they drafted EJ and I don't think most Bills fans are. But when you put things in perspective and remember the situation that Nix left Whaley in, Whaley didn't have a choice about whether to draft a QB or not. He had to. It was this team's number 1 priority from every angle. If he hadn't drafted somebody in round 1, the fans would have created such an uproar that he would have been fired by now for not at least trying to get a QB. The guy had to draft a QB to save his own job. That is how the NFL works. He was just playing the game how everyone in that position knew it had to be played. He went and drafted the best guy available to him. It didn't work out. Can't blame him for trying. You miss every shot you don't take.

That is why I give him a pass on EJ. He had to take somebody. No other QB in that draft has proven to be better. Otherwise, people would have a legit complaint that he missed there and should have taken someone else.

The officially preferred narrative is that EJM is Nix' draft pick, until he starts playing like Ben Roethlisberger. At that point, he becomes Doug Whaley's pick.

  3. I feel like Lynn being hired is also going to put Whaley on the hot seat (not necessarily in a bad way).

Rex didnt need help putting a staff together (in his mind). He was self sustained and pretty much knew who he wanted and where he wanted them.

Lynn on the other hand is a position coach who has carved a very specific niche for himself. Hes going to need a ton of help putting together a staff. Thats where Whaley will need to step up, IMO. There wont be anywhere to hide if Lynn fails, because Whaley will be just as responsible for not only the players, but the coaches this time around.

So fast forward to end of next year, if its a miserable failure, clean house.

Good point. It looks like the general housecleaning on the defensive side will be coming on Monday. If Lynn gets the permanent job after his one game audition in a game with about as much importance as a pre-season scrimmage, it will be on him and Whaley to hire a defensive coaching staff. Lynn's been around the NFL since the year the drought began, but all of his recent history—the last 8 seasons—has been as a member of Rex Ryan's staff.

My issue with Whaley is pure speculation. But I think he thinks this is a good roster led by a poor HC.

I think (with injuries and suspensions factored in) that this is an average roster that was led by an average coach.

I'm guessing Whaley overrates his work.

Yep. Setting aside excuses, the results do not demonstrate success. They show mediocrity. That's not "hating on Whaley". That's reality striped bare of propaganda.

  5. I think it's more likely with all of Rob's bombast that he said if you're firing my brother you're firing me too than they did it to be petty. Do you really think one was going to stay on without the other?

Personally, I can see sending them both packing. They are very similar in personality. As you say, they may have even asked to be fired together. Maybe Rob took credit for the 10 men on the field !@#$ up to save Rex. I've no idea.

My point was about appearances as a follow-up to the attractiveness of coaching gigs in Buffalo. The speculation that big-name coaches are going to jump at the chance to come here does depend on appearances and the overall appearance is one of dysfunction and possibly even pettiness.

  6. I don't agree with all the Whaley hate. He's brought in a lot of talent, certainly more than Miami has, and they're going to the playoffs. It's been coaching and culture holding back the team.

Whaley had misses. He gave up too much for Watkins when he didn't have a great QB. Cart before the horse. But then it turned out TT could throw a great deep ball and when Watkins wasn't injured TT looked a lot better. He paid too much for Dareus, who's too lazy and selfish to be the guy he ought to be. Clay has been OK but not worth the cost.

Whaley also had real wins. Jerry Hughes for whatshisname. McCoy for Kiko, who's never been as good since his rookie year. Lorax out of nowhere. Incognito. Keeping Cordy Glenn and Wood.

I also think the Pegulas talk to the other owners, and Whaley's reputation from his time with the Steelers is very good. I think the other owners tell the Pegs that Rex was the problem, and Whaley is on the right track.

My issue with Whaley is the insistence of his innocence, the stacked accounting narrative that excuses all responsibility, and the actual results, which have never come close to the glowing sunshine blown about.
