  1. I think Whaley would have been better off saying

"we have issued a statement on the firing of RR and I am not going to comment further on that we are going to discuss going forward things"

    any questions?

and simply move on from any question that baited him.....next question.

It would have achieved the same result

or dont attempt to silence them.....because you wont

Just my opinion, but what was needed here was DW to reassure and smooth the waters by presenting the message that the Bills house is in order and they are on (or getting on) the same page.

Everyone knows RR was fired. Everyone ought to know that it was an "organizational decision".

Instead his answers admitted cluelessness and like he has the authority of a spectator filling a seat behind a desk with a "GM" sign on it.

  2. He reports directly to ownership. Of course he should know why Rex was fired. In his position he requires the retrospective and alignment with his bosses so as not to repeat the same failures. From what he said, he has no idea what happened and no interest in finding out. He's either being dishonest (as Sully tweeted) or this organization has a very serious leadership problem.

  3. What exactly do you people want him to say?

I expect you want, "I hereby resign. I am responsible for everything that has gone wrong with this team. Rex Ryan was a saint. We should have called him Saint Rex. All my draft picks were failures. I did it on purpose, and because I am an idiot, and because I hate you. Oh, yes, I'm a coward, too. The trade up for Watkins was a deliberate ploy to ruin the team. So was my trading all of our 2013 draft picks in order to move up and draft EJ Manuel with the #1 pick in the entire draft, as you all remember, when we could easily have had Geno Smith in the second round, or Andrew Luck in the fifth, or Aaron Rodgers in the seventh, or any of the other franchise QBs who came out of that draft. We should have drafted a QB every other year like the Jets have done--look how well that has worked out. Jerry Sullivan is a saint. We should call him Saint Jerry. I screwed up in that trade for Hughes, too. And the Kouandjio draft pick--what a bust he has turned out to be. And the trade for Shady--what was I thinking? And hiring Schwartz--big mistake. And letting the Pegulas lose their minds over Rex when I could have forced them to hire someone else. Oops--I mean Saint Rex. It was my idea, not Saint Rex's, to draft that guy with the bad shoulder. And I knew Ragland's knee was going to blow out, ha ha! Tricked you, you losers! The new GM will be some really old guy who had success in 1993. The new coach will be some other really old guy whose name you recognize. We will call him Saint New Old Guy Coach and he will walk on water and you will be very happy with him because he is a Saint except he won't have to be a Saint because he won't have to deal with me, Doug Whaley, the reason for our 17-year playoff drought. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa."

    Straw-man much?

I don't really care what he says today. Excuses and justifications don't matter.

I want to see what he does.

  4.

The Giants and Patriots are headed to the playoffs after a successful season with their respective coaching staffs intact. Trying to compare those scenarios to the Bills' game yesterday is frankly ridiculous.

BTW, the Patriots were playing to lock up home field advantage, so they did have something to play for.

The players on the Bills, at least in most organizations, had something to play for too. In a word: jobs. As an NFL player it is never a good idea to leave your skidmarks all over the game film. Scouts actually look at all of it.

  5. in case any of you miss the presser...here are some are Whaley's remarks:

we are obviously disappointed with the outcome of our season.

our entire focus will be on getting to the second season of playoffs.

we will conduct an exhaustive search for a new head coach.

no decision has been made on the future of tyrod taylor.

we are going to develop our draft board like we always do. research every position from top to bottom.

we are in full evaluation mode regarding all of our free agents.

we are going to leave all options on the table.

Spooning the pablum early, aren't you? ;)

  6. The accusation was Whaley did nothing to help Rex find talent.

What accusation? Do you mean from the linked article? Where does it say that "Whaley did nothing" precisely?

Not that it will matter, but I think the article is clearly written from a retrospective viewpoint, which makes sense since it was written after the last game of the season. That is, it's Sullivan's take on what actually transpired in 2016, rather than a regurgitation of what the outlook for the season was back in July. Unfortunately, that last game looked and smelled exactly like a giant turd.

  7. The problem I ahve with Sully (well one of them) is he automatically lumps using draft picks to move up for a guy like Reggie Ragland like it is a negative.

Before Reggie went down....he was the talk of the camp......this instinctual thumping linebacker leader on the field (you know that type you need to keep RB's from gaining 200 yards a game on you)

Its not Whaley's faulty that Ragland went down.......he was a healthy player all through college....its not like it was a common injury for him?

Whaley should not be judged on this last draft because we dont know how well we did yet

I agree that it isn't fair to judge this last draft class at this point. It could turn out to be a decent draft still.

OTOH, the line from Sullivan's article was qualified. Paraphrasing: this past draft failed to provide Rex Ryan with much of anything in his final season as Bills head coach on the field. There isn't really any argument to be had there. This last draft was a list of injuries that provided little value in its first year.

There was also the line about Whaley and building the team through the draft, which can be argued. While Tim Graham pointed out the team has the fewest number of its own draft picks, etc., it can be argued that isn't all on Whaley. Personally, I do think Rex Ryan had a big say in going after a number of free agents and veterans in his own efforts to transform the roster. Perhaps it is ironic but given how short the hook is and the effort by some holdovers, it might have served RR better if they had been able to purge more holdovers and bring in even more free agents.

  8. I think there are better words, less absolute and personal, that are more applicable.

Some may be feeling: disinterested, disappointed, frustrated, unimpressed. Or even: hopeful, thrilled that he keeps pro sports in town. Some may even have all of those feelings at the same time.

  9. Sure we can. It will take more than a week to purge this team from Rex's lack of discipline

The next coach is in for a rough training camp and early regular season

    OK, fine.

I meant it like this: When you put two idiots in a paper bag, you got two idiots in a paper bag. If one idiot falls out of the bag, you're still holding a bag with an idiot.

  10. Yeah cause they were going to install a compete new defense for 1 meaningless football game

Maybe not a complete overhaul, but wasn't the bitching by the players that Rex made it too complicated? Seems like "dumbing it down" and reducing things for a week is exceedingly possible.

Whatever the coaches did or didn't do, the defensive players still can't make plays.

Shredded by Ryan Fitzpatrick. Oh boy.
