i think i would like to agree but just cannot because of what Elam was and is and how Dorian Williams was a round 3 project who played middle linebacker at a small school coming in to play will in a demanding scheme, with intensive activity required on him.
-
Of course, I agree. But changing our scheme to match the level of talent must be done to ensure the best possibility of contention for those that are thrust into positions of play. How this staff thought we had a capable backup in Williams blows my mind. Maybe he will get there but the dude was LOST.

Does the 2023 Bills defence get a pass because McD is coaching it?
boyst replied to Billsfan1972's topic in The Stadium Wall
This thread is about defense. I am simply asking people to talk about the problems on defense specifically. I don't think anyone in the NFL doesn't think the bills are capable of "duking it out" with anyone on offense. -
We didn't change our scheme going in with parts that weren't the same as original parts. Concepts and design must change and adapt to a players ability. We didn't change Elam was left to fall on his face. We insisted on an ineffective rush/blitz that only put up pretty sack stats but didn't help the defense as a unit. We had poor designs on 3rd downs (remember we held them to 3rd and 10 more than once) and blew it. I don't need perfect but I need better than that.

I'm not ignoring the the offense. I'm just letting this thread focus on the defense. Frankly, I'm not concerned the offense anyway. We have great skill players and Josh Allen. We can put 40 pts on anyone. -

this thread is about the defense. not the ofense. -
klein at will, rapp in at hybrid/heavy nickel. we can have rapp in with johnson and run a 3-3-5. rapp can be the sam, klein at will, and bernard at mike. this can allow rapp to go up against te's or slots while we bring klein up to the line. basically, we need rapp to now play aztec. liability is not having good edge setters. lawson can set an edge on the weakside, groot, philips, and ford on the inside, with miller on strongside smart enough to protect rapp. found this quick browsed it, looks reasonable to help understand what we can do.

youre really grasping at what i think. and i don't care about the offense in this thread. i saw enough in those two series to be concerned. the offense had a gameplan they worked on and executed it well enough to take advantage of our defense who came out strong but not great. and, there would be complaints. too often i think people forget the situation we are in... we are fanatics of a team who spend our free time looking at an internet website to our favorite but obscure football team, listen to countless hours of wgr, and generally only hear the same information repeated over and over again so much so that when anyone contradicts what we tell ourselves we make threads roasting them. and beyond that.... even if it was just 5-10 minutes of play that concerned me against oakland for our defense does not take away what was observed. the raiders did not play consistent when the script ran out. -

no. i am expecting schemes and gameplans that can match the offense. the first two series against the raiders we were outplayed, outcoached, and exposed a little bit. that an offense can prepare a gameplan in one week and execute against our defense week 2 with jimmy g at the helm was concerning. our players make the defense great, not coach. -

oh yeah, that redskins and oakland offense is so damn good!!! we stack up against miami perfectly and we had a chip on our shoulders there. we don't win that 10 of 10 times, especially with that margins. and concerning your last statement, i don't know if i posted during the raiders game but i was greatly concerned and said something to @Just Jack. the raiders first 2 series were scripted plays that were just killing us showing a blueprint for possibilities. i was concerned then and remain conerned now yes. i was complaining about the defense a ton during the raiders game. -

on 3 of those 3rd downs we rushed 6, had williams in the middle lost, and had 4 in coverage. in another one of those, pretty sure it was 3rd down... williams was lucky and there fore a pbu -

you're a smart poster and i respect you and i agree some people are just to B word regardless of anything about how we didn't get 407 sacks, and 43 interceptions, and hold them to 0.0 points. but, a few of here, including myself, saw problems that have been tendencies of our team for a while. it's almost a part of our identity. this is not the first and only game in recent history (last 6-7 games) where we came out flat, listless, and unprepared on more than one front. detroit last year, miami twice are also on the list of games where we did not seem adequate. i see tendencies i do not appreciate in lack of adjustments, even last year. and what the coaches let happen to elam was criminal. -

see below we are quick to make excuses for things that are inexcusable. having williams as a backup when he had no business on that field was inexcusable. he is not fit for a backup. klein is on the ps, and kirksey retired. both would have been better. we know their floor and it was higher than what williams offered. the coverage schemes matching up elam to get burned constantly almost seemed like the coaches hate him. hyde is great and haad good leverage against ridley several times. he got beat, though. we could have done more to change the pressures which were not working to offer more coverage. several things are getting forgotten and forgiven that fall on mcdermotts plate. including letting dorsey call a ***** hitch and pitch with several seconds on the clock?!?! that ***** was middle school. if mcdermott didn't know that play was going in than he needs to be fired. if mcdermott let it go in to be run he needs to be fired. that play call was inexcusable. -

i do not give you any credit on the answer. so i ask like anyone else.... where did the defense have short comings? there were plenty that no one has brought up, even myself. -

which is why it was ridiculous we went in with von miller out. we went in with 2 adequate DE's and a backup, and a recovering injured Miler. it'd have made more sense to hold off on miller and brought up ??anyone else. -

they kept sending him in ears pinned back, unfortunately. it takes a bigger toll for him to run block, gap protect, or set the edge but we limited his effectiveness by design of the play and scheme. if we dropped more into coverage without rushing 5/6 he may not have had to fight so hard all the time. -

did you see or notice anything was wrong with the defense or see flaws in any part of that 1/3? -

----------------------- all of you need to make an argument and statements about the defense without mentioning the offense. everyone keeps playing the game... "yeah but the offense..." and it needs to be a nonstarter of the conversation. the defense had a lot of problems in play, execution, schemes, and coaching. i can leverage some argument on injury but this staff wasn't prepared for that when they must be considering we have some old ass players. so please, try again to address the topic of mcdermotts defense without a red herring or obfuscating the offensive liability. -

the biggest issue i have is his gameplan and scheme sucked. completely sucked. even before being down players the defense didn't show potential to stop lawrence. then we kept making the mistake of rushing the passer instead of dropping for coverage. no. he doesn't get a pass and should have been fired after 13 seconds. -
first off, and it's been said a bunch so repeating it is getting old... stop blitzing/rushing 5/6 when we are not getting to him or causing him any problems. we sacked him several times and it didn't matter. we needed help in the secondary and we didn't give it. for christs sake, hyde was covering ridley 1-1. sure hyde played well, but that shouldn't be the case our gameplan against them was pure garbage. and while there were many areas of concern the fact is we did not adapt, we did not look to change, and we did not come prepared to begin with - the biggest case in point is having von play just 20 snaps against a high octane offense on turf. we don't need to risk his injury just to get him reps in game time. that turf was terrible. we should have elevated anoku when atlanta poached him. i only hope we can get him back in 2 or 3 weeks when they hopefully release him. leaving elam on single coverage and getting him off the wr, specifically ridley, was a terrible call. let him press. have him get help in a zone press coverage scheme while he mans up on ridley. no one else was a threat yesterday.

Core Players Who Will be Here for Super Bowl Run
boyst replied to BuffaloBaumer's topic in The Stadium Wall
1) diggs is a player who will be in the league 5-6 more years at the least because he is a smart technical player vs. a player who gets pounded (edelman, beas), or a pure speed guy (assault hill). 2) kincaid is not a core player. 3) cook is not a core player. he's a jag. sorry not sorry -

i wore the same shirt i wore last week - a shirt from like '93, a planet hollywood LA shirt - instead of my 90's bill shirt i wear unwashed until we lose. i thought i'd keep the good luck. i did change it in the 3rd which got us moving a little bit then we sucked so i went shirtless. -
