If the defense doesn’t score, something is wrong!

I can’t get worked up in the least by these comments. Yes, MORE points. He said AT LEAST 21, so that’s the floor. You can win some games with 21. (We will not win every game... I’m pretty sure.) Hopefully we’re in the 30’s...at least. I’m not going to over-analyze this. To do so is just looking for things to complain about, imo.

Augie. We're almost into March. March!

The season's right around the corner, well, over there ... and now we need the defense to score every game.

What do you have against Josh Allen?

I think all of us should sit down and parse every word, and over-analyze this. I mean, let's be serious.

I was kidding obviously. I think it's just an oversight and not a slight by him, and that he also thinks, as I do, that with two good legs, Haushcka will be fine this year, and the field goal issues of late last year were an aberration, due to injury, and not a trend due to sucktitude.

Now, the return teams and coverage teams is a whole different story. They were awful.

    Kidding. Kidding?

What's their to kid about Kelly.

The season is like ... checks calendar ... six freaking months away. And they're going to start voluntary workouts in like 6 more weeks. If this doesn't get addressed as soon as possible -- ASAP, as some like to put it -- then the whole thing's doomed.

    Absolutely doomed.

I’m putting that missed PAT on the long snapper, unless the kicker has taken a cheap shot.

Great. So now the Bills have to bring in a second long-snapper.

Watch Beane go out and draft one. He'll probably trade up for him, too, I bet.

    There goes the season.

Another 17-year drought. I can feel it.

I think he was probably thinking two TDs, a missed extra point, two field goals and a safety.

Great, now Hauschka's missing extra points.

This is getting worse, because I also don't think any team can rely on getting a safety a game. Name me one team that's done that.

If this is true, and nothing suggests it isn't because, after all, this is the interweb, McDermott has lost his mind.

  3. I personally think it's alarming McDermott failed to say "at least 24 points," because it does a big disservice to Hauschka and plays down his ability to hit field goals. I mean, it's a clear shot at the PK, because McDermott is clearly insinuating that the Bills can only score TDs and can't hit field goals.

This is terrible. Just terrible because he's not even paying lip service to his special teams group, which struggled last year, and are now under a new staff.

I'd say it's cause for alarm.

They are on the road to having the worst offense in the past 32 years measured by DVOA. How could one not conclude that they bungled the QB position? They could have kept Taylor and had a qb cap hit totaling $20.3 million, which is not bad. and as you know cap money can always be moved around creatively. Sure, teams with good young qbs on rookie contracts have far lower hits, but the Bills aren't one of those teams at present. teams with any decent vet are above that number (e.g. and randomly, the Redskins at $22 million), and while $16 million is too much for a solid backup (which is what Taylor is), the alternative is turning out to be pretty awful. Yeah, they acknowledged that they messed up, and I like that they did that. But they didn't have to be historic-level bad on offense: 32nd in points scored, 31st in turnovers given up, 32nd in collective passer rating, 32nd in net passing yards per attempt, 31st in INTs thrown, 32nd in points per drive, 31st in yards per play, 31st in yards, and a staggering -41 in passer rating differential vs. their opponent.

this is my only time I'll respond to this:

Tyrod was not interested in redoing his deal. his entire salary was on the books for this year. it was immovable.

they gained a valuable draft pick.

and, in the end, exactly how much better of a record would the Bills have with Taylor running this offense?

let's be real. they weren't making the playoffs with Aaron Rodgers behind center.

To the bold statement, I completely agree. IMO, their fortunes with the Bills rise and fall based on 2019.

Tim Murray failed in his rebuild and it cost him.

Botterill is making far more headway, and so is Housley, who has gone from being on the hotseat to showing he is capable of learning from last season, and deserving a longer leash.

And that's fair, meaning McD has that conviction regarding how DBs are used. It's just one I disagreed with at the time and now considering how they've struggled to consistently find a CB2, it would seem imprudent to have dealt him when he was still on his Rookie contract. That said, it's not a major deal to me. I believe McD has the right approach to the game and his players and Beane has the football acumen to lead the team as a GM by acquiring the right pieces of talent and personality to be championship caliber. That said, all the potential in the world doesn't amount to a hill of beans unless they activate that potential into real world wins.

2019 holds the key for both these gentlemen and I believe it should be a razor's edge year: succeed, and you've demonstrated competence to secure at least two more years, fail to the extent this team looks similar next year as it does now and I don't think McD survives beyond the last game of 2019. But I do think Beane gets a chance to pick his HC if that were to happen, based on Pegula's history with Sabres and Bills and that Beane was hired after the fact of McD, leads me to think if anyone goes, it would be McD first....although I'm sincerely hoping the situation doesn't demand that type of action and winning has resolved all concerns.

keep in mind, the Pegulas have now gone through that with the Sabres, staying the course after watching a team thoroughly under-achieve last year and seeing encouraging returns this year.

now, this Bills team this year isn't exactly under-achieving entirely, because this was always going to be a transitional year, and we're seeing the lumps result from it. that said, a case can be made that the offense is not playing up to even modest expectations.

this leads to the upcoming offseason and seeing what happens now that the BIlls are fully in a position to start adding talent.

can't judge Beane and/or McDermott entirely until that happens.

I'm of the sect that finds less fault with Beane and McD than others, as I just don't think you can change a culture, revamp the roster, create a healthy Cap continuum, and locate and develop your QB of the future in one and a half years. Most of the people who think McD and Beane should be fired are those with a microwave mentality and refuse to acknowledge where the team was when McD and then Beane took over.

The only trade I truly didn't understand - despite the idea that he didn't fit the scheme - was Darby. All the others I think played to the larger philosophy and vision McD and Beane have for the team. I also appreciate Beane's honesty to say he missed the mark on that one and should have been more proactive in getting a 3rd QB, a true Vet. That said, IMHO, it's much more about what they learn and how they adapt, than it is about pointing out their mistakes. It's easy to play captain armchair lame-ass GM when you don't have the multi-million dollar questions on the line day in and day out. IMO, Beane and McD need to be held to a higher standard with each passing year, and to that end, 2019 should be a year where real, measurable improvement is easily seen in the Offense and the Defense continues to get incrementally better.

Thank you for responding jw, it's easy to duck and hide or ignore.

McDermott's philosophy is CBs, for the most part, are interchangeable. That was proven out last year when two guys, including Gaines, filled in for Darby's loss.

There was also a belief, from what I remember, that Darby didn't exactly fit the defense.

  8. Late to this party, but let's clear up some things.

If several members of the media are going to follow this lazy and tired narrative in accusing the Bills if completely mishandling the QB situation, then perhaps they should at least ask a question or two to at least be fair. There was one asked on Tuesday, which is what sparked my thread.

And rather than simply following the tired narrative, someone needs to explain to me how else the quarterback situation needed to be handled.

One valid point made through the discussion on Twitter was the Bills needed to bring in another quarterback immediately after trading McCarron. Beane has acknowledged that as being a mistake.

Otherwise, I've yet to hear any valid rundown on how the quarterback situation has played out since March.

And no, don't respond to me about what about Tyrod?

That ship sailed because Tyrod refused to restructure his contract; the Bills would be handcuffed under the cap with it; and they got a valuable draft pick out of it that allowed them more room to trade up on draft day.

WEO, of course, is trying too hard to over-think things and reading far too much into this as usual.

    I'm hardly surprised.

  9. Here's a thought.

How is it that no one on the Bills staff had any inkling Vontae Davis was considering quitting.

Was there no red flag before the start of the season, when Davis suddenly revealed he was still trying to overcome an injury.

Was there no red flag during two preseason performance in which Davis couldn't tackle or cover.

Was there no red flag from last year in how Davis got into a major dispute with Chuck Pagano which led to the Colts cutting him.

Hey, I know there's some kind of nutty narrative in which the national media is questioning the Bills for making some odd decisions. But heck, what do i know.

I go back to Rex using the media to go after his GM in NY. He does note appear to be an easy guy to work with, which is no surprise. I'm not here to defend Whaley, who I had major issues with, but put yourself in his shoes - he's constructed an excellent defense that was #2 overall in DVOA in 2014 (behind Seattle), and Ryan comes in and forces an inappropriate scheme on the group. Next thing you know, they're #24 and #27 in defensive DVOA the next two seasons despite real talent.

it was a dysfunctional marriage from the beginning with Whaley, in my opinion, deserving 50 percent of the blame.

Whaley failed to get entirely on board with the Ryan hiring, because the Pegulas essentially took the decision out of his hands, and there being no clear definition of power between Rex and Whaley.

both spent the next two years trying to assert their power over the other.

Rex was the one who proposed having Tom Coughlin be hired to take over as football czar, so he could have someone have his back. he's the one who introduced Coughlin to the Pegulas.

Whaley and Brandon were against the move for obvious reasons, and eventually, Coughlin backed out.

Whaley and members of his staff then spent much of the 2016 season bad-mouthing Rex in the Pegulas' presence, leaked things to select members of the media who were indebted to him, avoided other members of the media, and eventually boasted to friends that he had the authority to fire Rex, and was going to do it.

Unfortunately, the Pegulas over-ruled Whaley initially.

Ryan was attempting to avoid the same scenario that took place with the Jets, and wound up suffering the same outcome.

Whaley won the power struggle but eventually couldn't save himself from the problems he himself created by claiming he wasn't privy to anything going on.

Thankfully, the Pegulas saw through the whole thing and made what was ultimately the right decision.

  16. For what it's worth, I believe, and it seems quite evident, Richie wrote that note to The AP on the fly. There was nothing really planned about it.

It came as a bit of a surprise after we had exchanged a few texts, including concerns Eric Wood had raised to me.

It appears that is what prompted Richie's comments regarding Eric.
