  1. that's very much like the unsettling ear-cutting scene in Reservoir Dogs in which we only hear it happen while camera is focused on the radio. subtlety, that was the word i was looking for last night when trying to describe the interplay (intercourse?!) between Bogey and Bacall throughout the movie. thanks. also, to follow up Basinger's solo scene in 9-1/2 weeks, wondering if women got a "rise" out of Judge Reinhold's snake shake in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High?" somehow i think it's different. jw
  2. Dan: i believe the proper term would be "crayonisian," though i think you're definitely on the right track. jw
  3. i'll then try to match wits, by providing this response: 5. there, now we should all be confused. jw
  4. excuse me, as it's been pointed out before, but your subhead clearly states: IF IT WAS, IT'S OFFICIAL NOW it's not superiority, it's a matter of simply understanding the English language and realizing how words have certain and specific meanings, which allow us to communicate. based on that understanding, it leads those among us to carry on discussions in which there is an underlying agreement that when one person says or writes something it is understood by the masses who are literate in the language, thus leading to a certain discourse that leads to a certain point in which those involved in said discussion can appreciate the other's point of view and provide responses to further the discussion. so when someone says or writes "official," it is understood by those who hear or read that word that "official" generally means something that is set in stone, announced or accepted as a fate accomplis, and i realize i'm now referencing another language, which happens to be French, though it's understood that the English language borrows from several cultures, including French, otherwise, how else would we get to French Fries, though, i do believe, they actually might have origninated in Belgium. but i digress so, unless you silently called this to be some sort of "opposite day" in which "black" is construed as "white" and "boy" means "girl" and "official" means "unofficial" or "inofficial" or "psyche!" then those of us who have a grasp of English language are led to believe that you meant it's somehow "official" that T.O. is now on his way out after one year. so unless, somehow you suffer from some form of writing dyslexia -- and i would then apologize for being insensitive here -- then you, perhaps, need to revisit your elementary phonics textbooks or purchase a dictionary at the very least so that we can truly understand what in fact we are being accused of not comprehending. seriously. jw
  5. March of the Penguins was hot if, of course, you're a penguin. But seriously, I always found the sexual tension between Bogart and Bacall in "To Have and Have Not" riveting even though they don't "do it" or come anywhere near close to doing it. From the the depth of their conversations, though, it's relatively easy to imagine that they did in fact do it ... and several times. The whole "you just put your lips together and blow" line is one of my favorites and makes it one of my all-time favorite movies. And it's a movie, to me, that provides proof that a film does not need to be bogged down by a predictable love scene of actors pretending to writhe under sheets, etc. etc. etc. Not that there's anything wrong with that, though I'd vote for Kim Basinger's masturbation scene in 9-1/2 weeks as being one of the hottest moments in film, especially considering it came out during my, how should I put it, "formative years." jw
  6. wow, and the media is accused of blowing things out of proportion. in one fell swoop, t.o. is not only officially leaving after one season, but this board is already speculating as to whether the bills might in fact franchise him next year (unless, of course, there's a clause in his contract barring such a move), though it certainly seems evident that t.o. is completely unhappy with how he's been treated in buffalo, and it's only a matter of time before he starts holding out, and the franchise, as a result, moves to st. louis/l.a./toronto/bahamas (tax purposes of course) and ... help me out SKOOBY. to borrow a phrase from kelly the fair and balanced dog, i think the answer to all of your questions is: "maybe?" though, i could be entirely wrong. jw ADD: by the way, he owns 4 homes, i'm told. miami, atlanta, dallas and the place in jersey where he did the situps.
  7. actually, stuck, i think i could handle this one with a cardboard disposable, considering have not seen any follow up responses. or maybe poster simply disappointed i turned down the invite to ass-kissing. ... either way ...
  8. t.o. explained that he didn't tour the place, but had his own real estate agent and pablo, his body guard, make the initial visit, after which they were informed of the owner's concerns, which were then relayed to t.o. jw
  9. wow. ... guess misspelling Milloy's name is the least of your concerns mr. overly sensitive and lacking tact. ... otherwise, aside from the ass-kissing, which i'll take a pass on this time, we're good ... i guess. jw
  10. i think your anecdote would've been better had you and Law had a chance to talk about Lawyer Milloy, too, though don't know how long the flight was so time might have been a factor. sorry ... jw
  11. i thought it was strange, too, that they cut out the dateline. never been to kc, i hear the barbecue's good. jw
  12. i do wonder whether you're taking this a little too serious. jw
  13. and away we go ... linky there'll be more based on his amusing account about the search following practice. if nothing, this is all quite entertaining from the normal mundane (mundanity?) minicamps. jw
  14. took a while, but i found the story Wilson/Rogers TO presser grafs 14-16: "Those partners are Blue Jays owner Ted Rogers and Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors. The two have formed a partnership to pursue an NFL franchise. The deal with the Bills is considered their first concrete step toward achieving that goal, and an opportunity to showcase Toronto's potential to the league. The deal with the Bills wouldn't preclude Rogers and Tanenbaum from making bids to buy and relocate other NFL franchises if they go up for sale."
  15. i wrote it but can't find that story online. i do know this to have been true at the time, according to one person inside the rogers group, who said the bills wouldn't have to be the only team they targeted and expressed confidence that teams in toronto and buffalo could co-exist. take that for what it is as i'm merelyl reporting what i was told. that said, there has been a bit of a shakeup since, including but not entirely related to Ted Rogers' passing. so i don't know if the goal posts, as they put it, have changed. keep in mind, however, that Goodell, when asked about addressing north america's 5th largest market with an nfl team, sidestepped the question by saying his first priority is addressing the 2nd largest market -- L.A. jw
  16. if the bars hopped are the swannie house or big tree, then i'm in. if it's the chip strip, well, i think there's some kind of rule at most places barring pasty old white guys, who listen to influential but failed 80s bands, etc. etc. ... jw
  17. why yes, he must be from just 'round the corner, living in nearby atlanta. sorry, couldn't resist. but seriously, if you go back to The Associated Press story from the first press conference in Toronto announcing the series, i'm pretty sure it was noted that the Rogers Group would be open to going after any franchise and not strictly -- some people here write "strickly" so i'll use both -- the Bills. jw
  18. actually, i shouldn't have used the word "stupid." that was wrong of me. "misinformed," "naive," "have agendas of their own" would have been better put. my apologies. jw
  19. let me climb on my high horse and explain, and expose myself as a music snob (as my wife likes to refer to me) and step on numerous toes and musical affections. by mainstream idiocy, i can't understand how The Clash made it big on the radio with Rock the Casbah and were relatively, but not completely, overlooked for London Calling. i don't understand how Soul Asylum and Social Distortion, though two good bands, earned more airplay than the 'Mats. i don't understand how REM finally made it big with One I Love, and not with many of the superior songs and albums that preceded it. i do understand but fail to entirely comprehend how cookie-cutter bands such as creed and nickleback made it big and The 'Mats did not. it wasn't altogether marketing and it wasn't altogether the devil (aka, clearchannel) and the greedhead suits in some offices in arizona formatting safe and easy playlists for the masses to consume. the 'Mats had their faults of their own, and they were noble ones. they were oft-times fall-down-drunks, had a remarkable knack for making fools of themselves when they had opportunities to make it big, and particularly rebelled against the corporate gurus when they were forced to tour with petty in an attempt by the record company to show The Replacements how professionals tour. the response, the 'Mats spent most of the tour drunk. though there are those that would knock the band for failure, i go the other direction. they, in many, embodied the true spirit of rock and roll, rebelling for no reason except for the fact to rebel, and sticking their finger in the air no matter who was looking. they were, i've written before, beautiful losers. and i'd challenge anyone to pick up Let it Be, Tim or Please to Meet Me and not find most of the songs still relevant today, and capable of blowing away any of the dave matthews band baloney that's been played for most of this past decade. jw
  20. uh, that's a broad-ranging statement. i could write all posters are stupid and i'd still be about half-wrong, right? jw
  21. thanks to all for their suggestions and help. the search was completed this week ... and had to alter the budget a little bit after some crackhead weasels broke into our house and took our tv and dvd player. surprisingly, things could have been worse as not a cd or ipod or much of anything else that my wife and i can see was touched. that said, had to go a bit on the cheap on the camera, so went with the nikon coolpix, with the AA batteries and not lithium, which was what many had recommended to begin with. got it for $129 at a local department store, which was worth it because it allowed me to buy the replacement tv that i wanted at a very significant discount, which resulted in essentially getting the camera for free. not a bad deal considering. have briefly tested out the coolpix and like what i see so far. very user friendly and a pretty sturdy little camera, which just might come in handy in a barfight, which should satisfy stuckincincy's suggestion. ... thanks all. jw
  22. allow me to continue to flogging a dead horse -- the replacements. this is a band that just about defines under-rated. and yet at the same time, and as i've noted several times on howard simon's show, this just might one of the most influential bands (note, i wrote band, not performer/artist/singer) to have come out of the united states, especially post ramones. nirvana's nevermind was titled after a 'mats song ,and as robert plant was once quoted saying in regards to his thoughts to "grunge," plant said: "nirvana? sh*t, the replacements were doing that 10 years ago." if you don't know who they are, look them up. if you want to question their rep, note that they've played with tom waits, joan jett, johnette napolitano. they've been covered by everyone from billy joe armstrong to glen campbell. the goo goo dolls owe their left nut to the 'mats sound. "i will dare," is listed in the rock and roll hall of fame as one of the influential songs of the 1980s. "can't hardly wait," "bastards of young," "left of the dial," "valentine" ... and i could go on would've been "hits" had anyone not been stuck on playing top-40 crap on the radio. petty stole the line "rebel without a clue" from a mats song. the two main men, paul westerberg and tommy stinson, to a lesser degree, are still putting out relevant music (though stinson's work with chinese democracy could be regarded as a sellout, at least he's finally making money). and yet no one in the mainstream idiocy seems to have heard of them. most underrated albums? every replacements album that's ever come out, and the same just about counts for westerberg's solo projects. i said, good day, sir. jw
  23. am told he has homes in atlanta, jersey, dallas and miami. jw
  24. it was a solid pass and catch. perfectly timed/placed pass, good adjustment and great extra gear by t.o. to catch up to ball. woulda been a td in any setting, practice, scrimmage, preseason, regular season and against most cbs. jw
