  1. But all the "Fans" on this site who dont know anything at all about football post how Ralph is cheap, Nix sucks, yadda yadda yadda. Truth be told, 99% of the people on this board probably couldnt name the GM on 5 other teams, let alone a candidate they would have liked to come here. And dont start posting names, because we all know you just googled it. You just need something to whine about, like always, and wouldnt know a good GM ever. Nix has all the credentials and a VERY VERY good track record, But of course, Ralph is cheap, and the bills suck.

Nix is great hire, one of the major problems w/ the bills as of late has bee the draft, nix is here for 1 year and has a pro bowler already. Maybin needs to move to OLB which he will next year, then we can say hes a bust. Wood and Levitre looked good for rookies as well. I joined this board not too long ago thinking most people on here would know a thing or 2 about football, which some do. But anyone who says the Nix hire wasd a bad one, is seriously just either A.) a total and complete moron, or B.) Just trying to illicit a response. While I hope its B, its become obvious to me its likely A.

So to all the "Ralph is cheap" and "Nix sucks" people out there, truth be told you obviously dont know a thing about Football, and like I said earlier, couldnt name the GM on 5 teams and wouldnt know a quality candidate if it sat in your lap.

I'm hoping that Nix is a great hire but I'm taking a wait and see attitude. BTW - need to replace illicit with elicit. Illicit means illegal.

All of a sudden I'm very depressed! :bag:

  3. In his CB interview he singled out QB and how important a strong arm was to cut through the winds. Well that cuts out anyone on this roster.

He addressed the fact that the way the Colts are built isn't the way we should be built. THANK GOD! Enough of this smallish BS. I loved how he smiled when he said something to the effect of how they were built in SD was able to beat the Colts 'speed team'. :-)

Alright I admit it, I was wrong to have a knee jerk reaction to the Nix hiring and I should give him a fair shot. I have to admit Ralph has me so jaded in anything he does that it is hard not to knee jerk at most of the things Ralph pulls. So I appoligize for running off at the mouth last night.

That said, Who he hires as a HC and even more important...how he handles the QB situation will tell us everything about him we need to know. Not one of our QB's is starting talent in the NFL nor do they have the arm needed for our stadium. It will be an interesting few months coming up. I hope this guy is the one to finally get it right.

    Happy New year all

I'm taking a wait and see approach. However, I liked that he mentioned building a team through the draft and holding onto the better players by extending their contracts.

  4. Despite what Mike's degree says, in his current role, he's not a journalist (which would imply remaining objective). He's a sports radio talk-show host, paid to express his opinions and get his listeners to interact with him on the air.

Think I've made it clear over the years that I'm not a fan of his, but to fall back on a cliche, "it is what it is."

Agree that Mike Schopp is a sports radio talk show host and therefore does not have to remain objective. However, he does come across as condescending and a jerk at times towards callers. He should listen to Howard Simon and learn how he may disagree with a caller yet do it in a more diplomatic way.

  5. The side I take is that he is an excellent talent evaluator. He spent alot of time with AJ Smith and, like the guy or not, he's done an excellent job in SD. Nix helped build that. With that being said, there is more to being a GM than just being a good talent evaluator. Will he bring in a quality coaching staff that can help change the landscape around here? Will he be able to land top tier FA to play for the Bills? I don't like the fact that it doesn't seem anyone else OUTSIDE the organization was contacted for the opening, but I hope for the best with Nix running the show.

The Bills are not exactly predictable. Having said that, normally the GM hires the HC and the HC hires the rest of the coaching staff. Signing free agents and playing a role, varies by team, in the draft process are usually the GM's job. Hopefully Nix hires a good HC and can evaluate good talent.

  6. More than Phillips, Williams, Mularkey and Jauron put together with three different teams.

He's a great coach. Hate to tell you this but count the number of NFL coaches there have

been in the super bowl era and count the number who have even played in the SB or gotten to

the championship game. The have nots will far outweigh the have's. Schottenheimer is

all the things Nix said he is looking for in a coach: a leader and a teacher.

If he would coach the Bills they would get better quickly. It's happened at every stop in

Schottenheimer's career. A coach can't get more proven than that.

Agreed. Marty would be a good coach for a young team which the Bills are. It may not be fancy or all that exciting but Marty gets wins in the regular season. The playoffs is what kills Marty but maybe with a good OC it would work better than it has in the past. Marty tends to play too conservative i.e. not too lose come playoff time.

  7. Bulger will be 33 next season. If he comes over for a 6th round pick or something, and is a placeholder while we develop Pike or somebody, then whatever, I'm fine with that. But he's not going to get us over any kind of hill.

Jason Campbell is the other interesting option, but man, I keep thinking he's better than he is. He's rarely looked good.

Campbell is awful. He has a great arm but not much else. Can you say JP Losman?

  8. Umm, we will not beat Atlanta (an average team) on the road with our pathetic offense. We will not beat the Colts even if we see a lot of their backups. Manning will play for about a half, maybe more if the Colts are 15-0 at the time. He'll ride the pine for the 2nd half after he tosses 4 TD's in the first. 5-11 it is.

I hope you are right. Not another 7 - 9 season.

  9. This just goes to show you how fleeting and fragile the recipe to winning in the NFL actually is...Wow did this team fall off....

The difference though is how good teams rebound from bad seasons and draft well following a bad season. Something the Bills need to figure out for a change. Every team has busts in the draft but the Steelers have drafted far better than most teams in recent years.

  10. yet again, the defence is not that big of a concern as people make it out to be. The critical spot on this team that needs a major overhaul is the offence.

Teams may run on the bills alot, but the defence still does the most important thing its there to do, keep the team out of the endzone. The offence is so bad that it can't win games when the defence keeps them in the game. I'm not saying that the Bills defence couldn't be improved, but without a better offence, the Bills will just lose even lower scoring games. Indy uses this defence, and they have not had a dominant defence, but they win cause the offence can put the ball in the endzone rather easily.

Indy uses the Tampa 2 with far greater talent. The Bills have many positions to fill on offense and defense. To me LB is the greatest need on defense. Need more pressure on the QB and guys to plug holes on run plays. On offense a LT and QB.

  11. The biggest mystery to me is whether some of our recent high draft picks have failed to develop because they do not have the ability or because of poor coaching (or a combination of both). I also wonder whether a new head coach, coaching staff and schemes will result in significant improvement in the play of these players. Clearly, Whitner, McCargo, Lynch, Ellis, Poz, Hardy, Maybin, Edwards, McKelvin have underachieved, in part, for some, because of injuries. That would be a lot of misses for high picks, and I must assume that at least part of the problem is coaching or scheme. If not, then we have one of the worst track records for drafting over the last five years, because the Bills are receiving virtually no producion from any of their recent top picks in the draft.

Throw out the injury part. The Bills do a horrible job at evaluating talent and where should players be taken in the draft. The Bills reach too much in the draft, bypass more talented players for lesser players, and trade up too much for a guy who is not worth it. Talent is the culprit for the Bills problems which includes the Head Coach. I'm still holding out hope for McKelvin and I think Wood will be a pretty good pro.

They draft projects like Maybin instead of taking a LT like Michael Oher who is starting this year

Draft guys like McGahee who was hurt plus we didn't need him because we had Travis Henry.

Reach for a guy like Whitner with the 8th overall pick who the consensus said he was a late first rounder while Ngata a huge DT was still on the board

They draft Mike Williams 4th overall who was a huge bust while McKinnie taken 7th overall is a starting LT for the Vikings. McKinnie apparently was a concern because of his character.

There are more examples of draft blunders.

They trade up to get McCargo and Poz. Two huge mistakes.

  12. Did anybody catch this... I caught it when it happened, but since I was listening I didn't see it untol now.

    Cool!

Sorry if this was posted in the game thread.

Now... Quick question... Isn't that a penalty according to the post-lockout delay of game rule?

    ??

No penalty. The puck has to go over the glass. The photographers most likely wanted the hole in the glass to cut down on the glare when they take photos. Miller is a class act.

  13. IMO, Losman would have been sacked 10 times.

He has a nice 40 yard time but all the agility in the world means nothing if you have zero feel for pass pressure. His measurables never manifested themselves in the ability to avoid being sacked a lot.

Plus he's a dumb QB. He just doesn't get it. The latest QB with a strong arm but doesn't understand the game like starting QBs.

  14. Most of the posters here have already come to the conclusion that there is no way the Buffalo Bills pay 10 million to any head coach. If it ever came down to a bidding war the Redskins make around 35 million more then the Bills, they can't compete.

If Perry Fewell can get more wins with this ragtag group of players and coaches, then he has earned the job and deserves it.

With 5 games to go Fewell is 1-1

    Jags L close game

    Miami W

    Jets 5-6

    @Chiefs 3-8

    Patriots 7-4

    @Falcons 6-5

    Colts 11-0

If the Bills beat the Jets Thursday night and Chiefs the next week I'd think Fewell should be offered the job full time, JMO

I don't understand why a win over the Jets and Chiefs would convince you to hire Fewell. Jauron was the coach when the Bills beat the Jets earlier this year and the Chiefs just unloaded one of their better players - Larry Johnson. Plus the Bills beat the Chiefs last year. Now if Fewell beats NE and Atlanta then I'll jump on board.

  15. I doubt someone would go to the length of spending 7 hours with a team over 2 days if he had no real interest...it would have been much easier to just say no thanks after a few hours and leave...

Or just say no thanks and not be interviewed at all - like Cowher.

  16. Amen. What a horrible post-game. I'd never heard of these guys before, but they were flat out awful. I could only listen to so much of it before turning it off. The lead guy (Schopp?) shouldn't even be fired; he should be shot (sarcasm...kind of). The other guy (Bulldog?) wasn't much better. Why not analyze what went wrong and what went right and how to improve upon it instead of harping on Fred Jackson running three yards for an additional score? Don't forget, Miami embarrassed us 38-10 week 4, and we weren't putting in the air, but merely trying to run the clock up and gain a little respect in the meantime. Makes me long for the days of Mike and the Mad Dog down in the NYC area. I used to love listening to WGR leaving the games, but I will not be listening to these schmucks again.

These guys are true knuckleheads. Did anyone from Miami complain about the score? These guys started the topic of "The Bills running up the score" and numerous fans called in defending the decision. The two knuckleheads then insulted caller after caller stating that the argument was illogical. Schopp is a real a$$. He insults callers and is condescending. Buffalo deserves better than this. All kinds of positive things to talk about e.g. Bills beat a division rival, Fewell gets his first win, Fitzpatrick has a nice game, two games in a row where TO is making the plays that fans have been hoping for, but no. They start it off by complaining about the Bills running up the score. The Bills won. I was there and it was nice to see the Bills come out, hang tough, and play smart, aggressive football. I know that it hurts the draft position for next year but the Bills really needed a win against a fairly decent opponent.

  17. Oh, nonsense. The Wood injury just ensures that the Bills are more likely to lose out, improving their draft position and letting them get a better player in April. What's more, with Wood's injury potentially severe enough that he could conceivably not see action NEXT year, the Bills are in that much better shape to pick in the top-5 of the 2011 draft as well.

Because, really...if idiots are going to root for losses, they shouldn't do it halfway.

You are the nonsense. Say what you want about the Bills drafts and their free agent pickups BUT they did well in drafting Wood. Hopefully his injury is not as bad as it looked because this guy looks like he could be good for a long time. The guy is a rookie. Playing out these games in 2009 would have helped him and the Bills for next year. What gives you the confidence that the Bills will pick the right guy anyway whether it is a top 5 pick, a top 10 pick, or a top 15 pick anyway?

  18. I don't know what this team needs for a coach doubt it is Fewell but i did like the passion he brought

The team did play harder but is that because of Fewell or is it because Jauron is gone. I feel it is more of Jauron. He is soft and his team became soft. Time mismanagement by Fewell in the first half and at the end of the game when Jacksonville was first and goal is telling enough to me that there is a better answer out there.

  19. I am pretty much done with the NFL. The rules have become ridiculous, the penalties randomly enforced, the level of play gets worse every year, the coaches seem identical, the announcers are way over the top, it has become a betting league, the sportswriters constantly spew filth to the masses, it just seems like a big pageant of mediocrity.

I love football. I have played it and lived it. I was a wrestler, too, but I pass on WWE or whatever its called. i am almost there with the NFL. I have enjoyed the UFL games more than the NFL games this year, if I am honest.

Let me know how you feel, gentlemen.

Everyone should get a DVR if you don't have one. That way you can do the honey do list, take your kids to their game, do leaves, etc. Come back into the house, crack a beer and power through the commercials, halftime, ridiculously long challenges, and still catch the 4th quarter live!
