  1. Forget about the McDermott “insight”. Mistake on my part.  As far as most embarrassing day in Bills history, several good suggestions but still say it has to be SB XXVII.  On the biggest stage with most of America watching you fumble the ball EIGHT times, lose five, throw four interceptions, give up TWO defensive TD’s and lose 52 - 17, that is the most embarrassing day in Bills history. Case closed.

Not the same situations,  so not much insight to our present situation, IMO.

Those Bills were the most talented roster in the league for 4-5 years and had no real competition to their dominance in the AFC.

These Bills are good but decades of free agency have leveled the playing field a lot more.

Case in point.......those Bills had the league's greatest ever pass rusher in HOF'er Bruce Smith and another DPOY in Cornelius Bennett.

The Bills best defender during their current run is who?  Jordan Poyer? 😂

These Bills COULD have won a SB.   THOSE Bills SHOULD have won a SB.

And don't let Polian off the hook for losing that game.   He was a hardhead.   He chose Levy and wouldn't fire him but he also neglected to add to those early 90's rosters in order to finish the deal.   He was determined to prove critics of his player choices wrong.    And specifically with regard to the Cowboys........he let Charles Haley get traded to the Cowboys.   There is no team the Niners hate or hated more than Dallas so they were desperate to unload him.   Haley would have been a game changer for the Bills and  his arrival changed everything for Dallas.

I agree with this 100%.  I always wondered how those games would have turned out if you take Haley and Thomas Everett (another offseason Cowboy pickup) off the Cowboys and put them on the Bills.  Have a hard time thinking any team would be able be beat a Bills team with Haley and Bruce Smith rushing the passer.

I had a party and literally threw everyone out. Haven't had a superbowl party since.

    Fn humiliating.

Giants - had a party at the house; Redskins - wife gave birth to our daughter during the game; Cowboys I - watched it alone; went for a bike ride the second half; Cowboys I I - went golfing.

  4. The recent back and forth whether to move on from McDermott because he “can’t get us over the hump” takes me back to one game: Super Bowl XXVII against the Dallas Cowboys.  The Bills had an up and down 1992 season, failing to win the division and losing Kelly to injury last game of the season.  The playoffs, however, were memorable, starting with the Comeback against the Oilers, followed by impressive road wins against the Steelers with Reich again at QB, and the Dolphins, with Kelly back at QB.

The Super Bowl, however, was a debacle and an embarrassment.  No question Cowboys had a very strong team and frankly a better team.  It shouldn’t have been a blowout.  It’s interesting to look at stats and play-by-play from the game.  Bills had more first downs and total yardage was relatively close.  Final score - 52 - 17!  Two key sequences. Down 14 - 7, Bills has second and goal from Dallas one.  Two runs and an interception followed.  Later, Bills down 21 - 7, Bills had first and goal inside the Dallas 5 and settled for a FG.  That was pretty much all she wrote.  The embarrassing part was that the Bills fumbled eight times and lost five and threw four interceptions, two each by Kelly and Reich.  Nine turnovers in the biggest game of the year!!!!

It’s hard to imagine a less well prepared team going into a big game.  Levy was a good coach, not a great coach. It was clear after that game that he’d never lead the Bills to a SB win.  Do you fire a coach who has led you to three straight SB’s?  In hindsight, the answer is, yeah you probably do.  Blow it up and let your GM start the rebuild. Instead we fire the GM and keep the coach.

Does this give any insight to our present situation?  I think yes.  McDermott should be on the hot seat this year.  Super Bowl or bust.  If we don’t do in 2024, time to move on.

  5. 13 seconds infinitely worse.  Why?  Because the last 13 seconds - from the screw up on the kickoff to the ridiculous defensive alignments on the following two plays - raised the legitimate question whether this HC and this staff were capable of winning a Super Bowl.  Jury is still out on that (unless the verdict has already been returned).

The other thing. Immediately after 13 seconds, I was convinced we beat Bengals at home and beat Rams in SB.  Do you really believe that now?  I don’t.  Cinci went into Arrowhead and won.  That certainly had the capability to go into Highmark and win.  Same thing this year.  Yeah, Jackson stunk but Ravens D is legit. Close game but 50/50 whether we go on the road and beat the Ravens.

  6. So even though our D has been statistically very good in the regular season the last four years, good offenses have blown us up in the playoffs each of the last four years.  Is it players, schemes, injuries, or something else?  Not sure but I lean toward scheme.  I would love to see us imitate the Rams “Greatest Show on Turf” defense.  It wasn’t particularly talented but it complimented a high powered offense by being super aggressive, causing a lot of turnovers and playing well with a lead.  Do we have the personnel to blitz more, play more press coverage?  Have no idea.  Will Babich have the authority to remake the defense?  I’m guessing no.  We’re clearly going to pick a bunch of players on the defensive side in the upcoming draft so we’ll have a better idea about the direction of the defense at the end of April.

This is a side discussion but one of my pet peeves.  I think there are things teams should do to minimize even further the role of ST coverage.  Kick kickoffs out the EZ, and punt directionally towards the sideline to minimize returns.  Even a punt OOB that goes a few yards shorter is worth it to not give up a return.  Lower the dependence on keeping scrubs who are 'ST demons' and give more focus on not kicking returnable balls.

Bingo!  You can design special teams that actually disposes with special teamers.  Every kickoff goes into the end zone (eminently doable); every punt goes OB or at least angled (this is where Azaria could come in - long punt but no hang time? Doesn’t matter if it is OB);  kickoff returns?  Always take the start on the 25.

No one was stopping Mahomes two years ago, and no one was stopping Allen.  Two very good defenses became almost irrelevant because of the generational talent at quarterback.

This year, the d line was trying to compensate for the dramatic injuries in the secondary and linebackers and came up short.

McDermott coached this defense into a top five defense this year, an almost miraculous achievement.  Don't let your irrational hate of him not allow you to see things as they actually are...

The good news is that Bean and the Pegulas also have enough sense to not let the haters influence them on McDermott in any way.

Can you imagine if they were as hysterical and irrational as the haters!?

Re “no stopping Mahomes two years ago”.  Bengals D says hold my beer.

Mahomes would have taken the Bills to the Super Bowl this year, and for sure would have taken at least two previous iterations of the Bills to the Super Bowl. In part because he wouldn't be playing against Mahomes!

The Bills D has been 'staggeringly bad' in part because they played Mahomes three times!

Can’t tell anymore. Is this sarcasm?

Josh's playoff wins have come against the likes of retiring Phillip Rivers, Skylar Thompson, Mac Jones, Mason Rudolph and playoff choker Lamar. All of them were at home, with the Bills being the superior team or vastly superior. They were 10-point favorites vs Pitt, 14-point favorites vs Miami, 5-point favorites vs New England, 7-point favorites vs Indy and 3-point favorites vs Baltimore.

The losses have come against Mahomes three times, Watson and Burrow.

Football is a team game, and I hate how QB focused everything is these days. But at some point, you really do have to actually win something. Allen is 5-5 in the playoffs. As great as he was vs New England in the Wild Card round in 2021, his three turnovers in the Dolphins playoff game in 2022 put that game in peril vs a third-string QB. As good as he was in the 13 seconds game, he stunk in the 2020 AFC title game vs the Chiefs, and was equally ineffective in the playoff loss to the Bengals. In the Texans loss, the Bills scored a TD on their opening drive and then didn't score another touchdown the rest of the game (blowing a 16-0 lead in the process).

This year vs the Chiefs, he had his team 1st-10 at the 27 yd line, with a chance at a walk off win, and he advanced his team only 1 yard closer before settling for a 44 yd field goal.

Mahomes has won more playoff games (6) in the last 13 months than Allen has won in his entire career (5). Mahomes has six AFC title games in six years, 4 super bowl appearances, 2 super bowl wins (with a third possible in two weeks), and has beaten the Bills all three times in the postseason. Some people act like Mahomes is only good because he has Andy Reid, but last I checked, Andy Reid made one Super Bowl his first 19 years in the league, and has made four in six years since he got a unicorn at QB.

The people that rate Mahomes as inferior to Allen are living in fantasy land.

So, let’s say Mahomes is traded straight up for Allen this offseason.  Bills win the Super Bowl next year, right?  Allen’s playoff numbers are great.  In the last four playoff losses, the numbers for the Bills’s defense are staggeringly bad.  If Allen and Mahomes had traded places five years ago, Allen would have a couple of rings and Mahomes wouldn’t have any.  Mahomes may be better than Allen but the difference isn’t a gulf, it’s a puddle.

It's sad watching & listening to the completely different national takes on Jackson & Allen's games against KC.  Most of the talking heads hate that they have to admit that Jackson played poorly but man are they coming up with excuses none of them would give Allen.

Excuse 1: Spags was great.  Yes he was but most of the time, including the playoffs, Allen does just fine against Spags D.  I wonder if you asked Spags who between Jackson & Allen is tougher to prepare for and keeps him up at night prior to the game he would say Allen and it's not even close.

Excuse 2: Monken the Raven's OC sucked and didn't run the ball enough.  Wow this one is creative.  No one outside of Allen apologists on 2BD ever call out the coaching as not exactly helping Allen out.  And it is kind of funny that it's viewed as a problem for Jackson when the presumptive MVP QUARTERBACK is asked to throw the ball a lot.

    *  Excuse 3:  Because Mahomes!  I guess because Mahomes was excellent Jackson can't be expected to be great.  You know like Highlander where "there can only be ONE".  But wait Allen and Mahomes have played in multiple games where both have been great.  Aw shut up homer.

Excuse 4:  Flowers fumbled at the goal line!  I guess Jackson INT in the end zone means nothing next to this play.  To bad for Flowers that he doesn't play for the Bills.  No one outside of 2BD would be calling out that fumble as having anything to do with Allen sucking and losing he game.  But since blame must be deflected from Jackson throwing it on Flowers makes a lot of sense.

Oh and some Talking Head's were saying that Jackson may have, GASP, fallen in with the likes of Dak Prescott and Josh Allen in struggling in the playoffs?  Say WHAT! How could anyone but the dumbest Allen hater put him in with those 2 in the playoffs?  Lets see:

    * record: Allen is 5 - 5 versus a combined record of 4 - 9.  Allen has more playoff wins then Prescott & Jackson COMBINED!

    * total TD's: Allen has more total TD's in 10 games then Prescott & Jackson have scored in 13 playoff games COMBINED!

    * total TO's:  Allen has fewer playoff turnovers then Prescott & Jackson COMBINED!

Quick reminder of Allen’s greatness, yes greatness in the playoffs: 10 games - passing 272.3 yards per game, 65% completion, 21 TD’s, 4 INT’s; rushing 563 yards, 6.8 average, 6 TD’s, 2 fumbles. Oh yeah, 1 reception for 16 yards and a TD.  If the defense was average in the playoffs, Allen would have a couple of rings.

  12. There isn’t any need for a “rebuild” next year.  The offense is going to come back intact (except maybe Morse as a cap casualty).  They will most likely add a WR in the first round.  It has the potential to be great.  Not good, great.  Yeah, lot’s of questions on D but there is no way next year should be a rebuilding year.

I've been vocal that we should hire someone else this offseason - but only because of the coaches who are available.  It's rare to have this many proven coaches out there.

But, I disagree that he is not top 15, and would even argue that he is top 10.  Coaching in the league is simply not very good.  Reid, Harbaugh & Demeco Ryans are excellent, imo.  After that, it drops off.  Sirianni was hot last year, but his team totally fizzled this year.  McDaniel was hyped, but I wouldn't want him.  I like Dan Campbell, but he still has to prove he can get to a SB also.  Pederson won a SB, but really squandered a talented Jags team this season.

Like, who is that much better than McDermott out of maybe a top 5-7 guys?  He's a solid coach. And he would for sure be a hot candidate if he were available.

I’d certainly add McVay to that list.  Peyton?  Tomlin is a McDermott clone with a SB ring.

Yards per play given up in each of our last 5 playoff losses (kneeldowns excluded):

    Chiefs 2024 - 8.5

    Bengals 2023 - 6.0

    Chiefs 2022 - 7.6

    Chiefs 2021 - 7.4

    Texans 2020 - 5.6

As a point of reference, the worst defense in the league this gave up 6.0 yards per play. Our best effort on here, 5.6 yards per play, would have ranked 27th.

So there are two possibilities to finally break through in the playoffs. Either our defense stops giving up historically bad yards per play, or we build up our offensive supporting cast so that it can consistently produce historically great yards per play. It's very hard to win games when your yards per play differential is negative.

    Correcto Mundo!  Staggeringly bad numbers.

Peyton Manning considered a top 3 QB of all time only won 2 himself, the last one being carried by an insanely good Bronco’s defense. Not to mention Elway, Favre, Brees are top 10 QBs and only have one a piece as well. People don’t understand how hard it is to win it all even with an elite QB.

    Elway won two.

  17. More fun facts: 24 regular season losses over the last five years.  Of those losses, only six have been by more than one score.  Five post-season losses.  Two by more than one score.  Zero and four OT record in regular season; 0 - 2 OT record in the playoffs.

Only one regular season loss in the last three years by more than one score.  That’s a really remarkable stat.

  18. The quarterback debate is, well, stupid.  It’s not Conners v. McEnroe.  The question I always ask is if the QB’s changed teams would the outcome be different.  If Manning and Brady changed teams would Brady still have six rings with the Colts?  Of course not.  How many would Manning have if he played for the Pats?  A hell of a lot closer to six than the one he won for the Colts.  Would the Bills have beaten the Cowboys if Aikman played for the Bills and Kelly played for the Cowboys?  Of course not.  Same with Allen and Mahones. Do you really believe the Bills win a Super Bowl if Mahones had been our QB the last five years?  Do you really believe Allen doesn’t win a Super Bowl being coached by Reid and throwing to Hill and Kelce?  The ongoing arguments are pretty damn stupid.
