  1. Winning against conference opponents is preferred against winning against non-conference opponents. Got it. That doesn't mean that losing a game on purpose is going to help you, because you don't know if you're going to win another one later. If you lose on purpose you're taking yourself out of the potential tie-breaker situation.

  2. Where are all the haters that said he couldn't play? Looked pretty good for his first start with 2 Touchdowns, he should have been sitting behind Fitz being groomed as our QB of the future.

He looked OK for his first game, but I'm still not impressed. Definitely glad he's not on the Bills roster.

  3. The positives I'm taking so far this season:

-Steve Johnson has shown flashes of brilliance.

-Ryan Fitzpatrick is a legitimate quarterback. Ballsy and smart, great combination.

    -Kyle Williams is a beast.

-Despite the grief he gets, Poz is a tackling machine and has been making plays closer to the LOS this year than in past years.

-The development of Moats makes me think we have another legitimate linebacker on the roster.

-Getting rid of Edwards and Greene is evidence to me that the front office is willing to improve the team by getting rid of dead weight.

-David Nelson is going to be a good receiver for a while.

-Roscoe was having his best year to date.

-Bell is not the penalty prone machine he was last year, and is overall much better than last year.

  4. More than anything, I'm surprised Chan hasn't been able to find an active place for him in the offense. He hasn't had too many opportunities carrying the ball, but the offense has been running the ball sparingly. We HAVE seen the big play ability in the guy. He had runs of 20+ and 10+ (IRRC). He also had the return for a TD earlier this year. Before I get blasted, yes it is typical to expect more out of a top 10 pick, but to say we haven't seen anything and that he's a bust is a bit premature.

  5. on College Football Live Jesse Palmer just said the Wisconsin Badgers could run all over the Bills. I know our run defense is bad by NFL standards but that is a ridiculous statement.

That's so ridiculous that it's not even funny. You've got the college team, who has MAYBE a handful of guys ready for the NFL. On the other side you have guys who are actually in the NFL. No contest.

  6. I think most folks recognize how well Kyle Williams has played this year. That said, I have to question someone who thinks he should be defensive player of the year. he may be dominating his man, but he is not dominating the game. if he was, the Bills defense would have many more 3 and outs.

I am not trying to diss KW, but you can't be the defensive player of the year if you can't lead your defense to being one of the best.

That we have very little else on defense makes his performance even more impressive. They plan for him and he still disupts offenses. If I recall correctly, he had 2 sacks in three plays that caused a three and out. So he needs to do that more often to be defensive player of the year? I guarantee you that no other player in the league does that.

  7. I dont know about everyone else on the board, but I have to say that is pretty disrespectful. Everyone knows what happened, I dont think it needs to be advertised with the you tube video on the front page. The guy is having a very good year. He does drop some balls, and he may or may not be the future in Buffalo, but he is still a man. I am sure he is hurting enough. We were 2-8 anyway. Its not like he ruined our playoff hopes.

It was kind of the key play in the game. It is also what most everybody is going to be remembering about that game.

  8. Though I have to say, the defense as a whole is showing a ton more signs of life than they were earlier in the season. Gave up 14 points against an improved Detroit offense...absolutely shut down Cincy in the second half, despite a horrific first half...only 19 points against the Steelers, including a lengthy overtime.

As a whole, this seems to be a second half team. Both the Defense and Offense seems to rally well after halftime. Just need to see that fire in the first half!

  9. That aint what I posted. He's had the best season of any Bills defensive player. So what? The Bills are the worst team (by a long shot) against the run in the NFL. They give up over 165 yds. per game... and Williams is right there in the middle... Nose Tackle, the single most important position for a 3-4 defense. Everything feeds off that position.

Geaorge Wilson and Fred Jackson were the Bills defensive and offensive mvps for the Bills last year. Ya know what, neither was starting on opening day. That doesn't mean Williams, Wilson and Jackson aren't good NFL players... but, let's keep it real. They'd only be role players on the top seven or eight teams in the league.

The award is for Defensive player of the year, not Defense of the year. He's having a great season by any DT standard. All he does is make plays in the backfield all game long. Sure he doesn't do it every single down that is played, but nobody does. As a team, yes this defense is not good. As a player, Williams is having a stellar season.

  10. I know there have been 1295 Fitzpatrick threads but thought this topic deserved its own.

Seems to me that very good to great QBs in the NFL need to possess at least a dozen physical qualities and intangibles to consistently win in this league, and if they cannot consistently win, why have them as your starter and face of the franchise? Most if not all of the very good to great ones posses most all of the these traits. Hardly any of them and perhaps none, possess all of them.

    In no particular order...

1] He must possess an NFL quality arm. It doesn't have to be a cannon, it needs to be able to "make all the throws".

2] He must be accurate, short, medium and long.

3] He must be able to read complex defenses before the snap to anticipate the rush and coverage, and how the play that was called will be affected.

4] He must be able to read complex defenses quickly and accurately after the snap, process the information and make good, quick decisions on when and where to throw.

5] He must be able to move in the pocket, step up in the pocket, sense the rush, and be able to still look downfield and throw the pass he wants to under severe pressure.

6] He must be able to run the ball upfield to avoid sacks when the protection breaks down, no one is open, or a first down is needed.

7] He must need to not hold the ball too long and get sacks when no one is open.

8] He must go through his progressions and look/throw to his second, third or dump off receivers.

9] He needs to spread the ball around to different receivers and backs to keep defenses honest.

10] He needs to take what the defense gives him and strike hard when the opportunity presents itself.

11] He needs to avoid turnovers (both fumbles and interceptions) at all costs.

12] He must put points on the board, particularly throwing touchdowns.

13] He needs to be efficient in the redzone.

14] He must know the team, and defense, and players he is up against, avoid their strengths, exploit their weakness, and carry out the gameplan.

15] He needs to make big plays, big passes, at important moments in the game.

16] He needs to be able to run a two minute offense, or hurry up offense.

17] He needs to win games.

I'm sure I am forgetting some, or lumping ones with others that should be their own point.

The point is, outside of #2 and #15, which are arguably the two most important ones, Ryan Fitzpatrick seems to possess them all. He really does everything pretty well. He has that accuracy issue which is the one thing that keeps him from OBVIOUSLY not being a franchise quarterback. And he has yet to win games, although it's easy to argue he's put the team in position to, especially last week. He also has thrown bad passes at bad times, so #15 and #11 are not all there, and his detractors can rightfully point to them.

But the fact is, he does a LOT of things good quarterbacks need to do very good. Almost all of them. I think winning will come. It's really, to me, just a matter of whether he learns to keep the bad passes down, the inaccuracy at a minimum so it doesn't kill us, and soon gets the wins. I'm starting to believe he will.

The more this guy plays the more I like him. IMO he's getting better each time he plays. I want to see how good he can be.

  11. With Fitzpatrick's recent resurgence under Gailey, I can't help but wonder what Edwards would be doing right now if they would have been a little more patient with him. I still think the kid has all the physical tools and he went to Stanford so we know he's capable mentally to play quarterback in the NFL. I say we try and bring him back at some point- perhaps not until after the season as I realize Fitzpatrick has a nice rhythm going right now. But next year I'd like to see the job handed back to Edwards and see what this kid can do with an offense that can actually function. It will probably require re-structuring his contract as I'm sure we could get him pretty cheap right now. Not to mention this would solve the long-term question at QB and we could focus strictly on defense in the first round. It's almost too simple. Git r' done Buddy!

Hilarious! Well played sir. Definitely got a good rise out of the board.

  12. 1] Edwards has a hamstring injury and is likely out a while, maybe the rest of the season,

2] Carrington not only had a sack but played well overall and showed a lot of production and promise. He will likely start next week unless Spencer Johnson is back and 100% and he didn't dress yesterday. Carrington will likely play a lot the rest of the year.

3] Maybin was in for three total plays. On one of them, Jonathan Scott was beat and was called for a holding penalty that negated a good play. On another one he looked like he was held, then chased Big Ben down for a tackle on the other side of the field after an 18 yard scramble. Some people thought he didn't get up quick enough from the apparent hold. I didn't see the replay to know either way. Maybin deserves to see some action on obvious passing downs the rest of the year. And likely will.

    2. In addition, Carrington was held on a play that negated a decent Pitt gain (if memory is serving me).

  13. Do you have a brain injury where you can't remember anything longer than a few weeks ago? Remember the clutch kick versus the Redskins? Obviously not. Selective memory at work.

I was at that game. All the Bills fans were giddy and giving high fives. My joy caused a few threats to come from Skins fans at the end of the game. I just laughed :)

The guy has had a few bad kicks recently. It happens to everybody and is being overblown. He's been a VERY good kicker for the Bills and it would be foolish to get rid of him after a couple of weeks of being sub-par.

  14. Indeed, as much as this was a frustrating experience (I laugh at it now), I have to say... more impressive than beating either the Lions or the Bengals... though... emotionally, getting wins feels soooo much better.

As you said in another reply, the Baltimore OT loss was the most impressive game of the season so far for this team. I want them to take the next step. They've played close to playoff teams, they've beat bad teams, now it's time to beat a playoff team.
