Man I don't want to move out of Buffalo but I think the time has come. I applied to a job dealing at the Excalibur and I got it. I believe I will be leaving at the end of November.

Anyone know any Buffalo transplants out there?

Thanks,

My in-laws will be going out there on Jan 1st for about a week. Unfortunately, they're Packers fans...

I've always thought working in IT for one of the casinos could be a fun job. I just don't want to move to a desert...

Have fun!

Why? Do you know anything about their pay scale, benefits package, management style, etc...?

Just because it's not a nicer casino in terms of what you'd like to stay at has nothing to do with how employment there would be.

Do your research real...don't automatically go for the Wynn because its the new megaresort on the block.

I want to work at a casino that I can maximize my earning potential. If that's excalibur cool, if it's wynn cool. Whatever you know? Just want to make good money.

Congrats on the move and new job.

As for Buffalo natives, this might be a good place to start:

Bills Backers log-in page

Just register and go to Nevada. I believe their bar is located in Henderson. If they're like most clubs that I've been to around the USA, there will be plenty of WNY'ers there to help you aclimate to your new surroundings. Not to mention a place to watch the Bills game each week.

Good Luck!

How much do card dealers get paid?

And were you doing it at the Casino Niagara or something?

There are about a half dozen Bills Backer Bars that I know of. The one in Henderson is called Johnny Macs and its on Boulder Highway. My fave.

Slinging cards is the same at just about all the joints now that MGM has gone crazy and runs 1/3 of the city. Excaliber wont be much different from the dealer's standpoint than being at the Mirage. Many casinos pool the entire Shift's tips and then divide them equally to all the Dealers on that Shift, so even if your table is dead for a few hours you make pretty good coin.

The Wynn sucks. VERY uptight place to work. If you dont like it at Excaliber, you can (in 6 months) transfer to any of their other dozen properties all over the city from Bellagio to MGM Grand to Circus Circus (as if). If you work at the Wynn, you're stuck. Besides, Steve Wynn is a pr!ck.

Good luck, and remember:

What happens here, stays here.

How much can I make?

Apart from management, including some floor persons in the game pits, dealers are making the most money in most of the houses in this order: baccarat dealers (not to include mini-tables), blackjack dealers and craps dealers. In Downtown houses the blackjack dealer may only make an average of $40.00 a day in tokes (tips), but in the bigger, more luxurious casinos on the strip, the blackjack dealer averages $180.00 a day. Dealers in the highest stakes baccarat rooms, the most expensive looking pits in the casinos bring home $250.00 plus a day. Most dealers get little more than minimum wage. In many cases they just sign their pay check over to the Internal Revenue Service and live on their tokes.

Pretty much what he said. I moved out here in May, it's awesome. Right now its 71 at 8pm, I was just outside and its perfect weather. 8pm in the middle of October in Buffalo you need either a jacket, umbreall, or both.

I actually work for MGM Grand, same corporation. Excalibur isn't bad, although since the merger we (my dept at MGM) has worked alot with the new properties ie Excalibur, Mandalay, and Luxor. There were definitely a lot of things that needed to be improved, business wise, for them to get to "MGM standards". Things are improving, partly because so many executives, directors, managers, etc transferred or were promoted to positions in those properties. Working at Excalibur now will be a lot different than it was 6 months ago- better.

Anyways, yes most of the shifts tips are pooled, and remember for everyone that tips $.50 when they leave, or not at all, there's someone else tipping in the thousands, routinely (although not as much at Excalibur). You'll probably start off on grave, but that can still be busy.

As for the important stuff - make sure to go to the aforementioned Johnny Macs on Boulder Highway in Henderson for any and all Bills related activities. Its rough to get up in time to ge there by the 10 am kickoff, but well worth it.

I'm going to keep an open door and keep trying to get in to the Wynn.

FYI havent heard great things about the place. Keep your eyes open at the MGM properties, as was said earlier after 6 months you can transfer to anywhere in the company.

$40.00 + min wage?? WTF?  That SUCKS

I always had the impression that dealers made MUCH better money....Even the low-end ones???

The triple post -- notice he said at the downtown casinos. Thats like night and day to the big strip casinos. Trust me - anyone dealing on the strip, where Excalibur is for The Real - makes ALOT of money. Any job on the strip that deals with tips is great and dealing is the best of those.
