I wrote to Alan Pergament at the news to ask if there was any update on a deal between MSG and DirecTv to show Sabres games here in Buffalo.

I got an Email last night and indeed they have reached agreement. The games will be braodcast on MSG for DirecTv customers.

Yes, you would need Center Ice to watch the games unless you're in the WNY area, in which case you should be able to see them with MSG.

MSG would be the "local" carrier for Sabres games, no additional expense would be required. If you wanted to see other games, you would need the NHL Center Ice Package, or you can watch them on the Outdoor Life Network

From what I had seen, MSG is going to be coming anywhere close to televising the same number of games

as EMPIRE did. Empire used to televise around 75 of the 82 games ...

Ashame they went under ... <_<

I thought I read that there will be 75 games televised between the 72 on MSG and 3 on OLN

MSG bought Empires contract - they will show the same number of games. If you live in Buffalo, Roch or Syracuse and your cable provider has MSG then you should get the Sabres regional feed. Elsewhere you would get the Rangers feed from MSG.

There is supposed to be a post-game show - not HH but something.

Does DirecTV really work that way?

The way I understand it is that Adelphia reached an agreement to broadcast Sabres games over MSG in WNY only. That is, the Sabres games will replace the MSG feed at the local cable source. DirecTV will have the national feed out of NYC which is only being replaced locally at the Adelphia control station.

Can DirecTV's satellite selectively show differenty shows on the same channel in different locations?

Note: I also read Adelphia will be showing 74 Sabres games on MSG

this is percisely what I asked Alan Pergament (Media reporter for the Buffalo news) about and he told me that MSG has an agreement with DirectV to show the Sabres games on MSG in the Buffalo market. So yes, they will braodcast an "alternate" signal in these areas, probably based on area code or zip code.

DTV can't broadcast a different show on the same channel - it's impossible.

(and before someone says, "Local channels are the same numbers in different areas," that's being done with a bit of magic behind the scenes. The channels are REALLY coming in on the 900 range; most receivers nowadays actually map those numbers to what the channel really is in the area, so you don't have to remember that CBS is 944, ABC is 945, etc).

That said -- if MSG is carrying Sabres games, they COULD potentially broadcast the game with another channel (if they had the bandwidth).

Isn't MSG *always* showing the Sabres games? If so, then the blackour rules apply and it's easy.

Couldn't tell you, although I'd be surprised to see MSG broadcasting the Sabres games locally when the Rangers are playing at the same time, even on cable.

Somethings going to have to give... they are adevertising that there will be 73 Sabres games on MSG. Probably half if not more of those games will be at the same time as a Rangers game.
