September Movies: Variety defines "Adult Season"

The Summer movie season has ended. No more Sith Lords, Dark Knights, Martian Tripods, Wedding Crashers, Chocolate Factories, and Jane Fonda acting like herself in real life. The month of September is here, as is the so called "Adult Season" of movies. There may be some Oscar contenders this month, but there is plenty more than drama this month, as horror, sci-fi, & comedy are out there as well. Here is what Hollywood has in store for us.

Tim Burton & Johnny Depp team up yet again this year, as Burton returns to stop motion animation with "Corpse Bride". Inspired by a very dark Russian folk tale, Bride follows the story of Victor(Depp) who is betrothed to Victoria(Emily Watson). One night while Victor is out in the woods practicing his vows, he unknowingly marries the Corpse Bride(Helena Bonham Carter). Only Burton would come up with this story. Albert Finney & Christopher Lee co-star.

Jodie Foster returns to the big screen in the thriller "Flightplan". A story about a woman returning home with her daughter on an airplane. During midflight though, here daughter disappears.

Samuel L. Jackson is given the unenviable task of protecting Eugene Levy from harm in the buddy comedy "The Man".

Roamn Polanski brings us his version of the famous story "Oliver Twist", Ben Kingsley stars.

Family drama brings out the stars: Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman, & Jennifer Lopez star in "An Unfinished Life"; Anthony Hopkins, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jake Gyllenhaal star in "Proof".

Nicolas Cage is a big time arms dealer in "Lord of War".

Joss Whedon's defunct sci-fi series "Firefly" gets the big screen treatment in "Serenity".

Jason Statham returns as Frank Martin in "Transporter 2".

Reese Witherspoon & Mark Ruffalo star in the supernatural comedy "Just Like Heaven".

Based on a true story "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" stars Tom Wilkinson & Laura Linney. An exorcism of a college girl, leads to her death. But was she really possessed?

Viggo Mortenson stars in "A History of Violence". A story about a small town man who thwarts a big crime. While he is lauded as a hero he attracts the attention of two men who believe he may not be who he seems. Ed Harris & William Hurt co-star.

Edward Burns & Ben Kingsley star in "A Sound of Thunder". Based on a short story by Ray Bradbury, it follows hunters who are able to travel back in time to hunt dinosaurs.

Paul Walker, Jessica Alba, Scott Caan, & Ashley Scott are four divers who go "Into the Blue". The divers find a shipwreck with lots of gold. Guess what happens next.

"Cry Wolf" is about a bunch of crazy prep school kids who find it fun to make up rumors & lies about their fellow classmates. Alas, murder ensues.

"Underclassman" stars Nick Cannon as a detective looking for respect, but finds it in an unlikely place.

Joss Whedon's defunct sci-fi series "Firefly" gets the big screen treatment in "Serenity".

I've been saying it since the show was on TV, but Firefly ROCKS. The movie is also going to ROCK! (Fox SUCKS for cancelling it, but I won't go into details on that).

If you like good story-telling (don't think of it as sci-fi, because that's WAY too general), great dialog, and wonderful character development, you owe it to yourself to watch Firefly:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...&s=dvd&n=507846

The DVD has been out for years and is STILL in the top 25 of ALL DVDs sold by Amazon! It frequently shoots up to #1 as well (and Amazon sold out of its entire stock of Firefly during PREORDERS!).

After watching the series (it's only 14 episodes, unfortunately...), you then get to watch the movie. It's already been screened around 66 times in the country and is getting rave reviews from everyone. I"ve seen the trailer, and it looks great.

Universal has already said that they'll be making a trilogy, as long as it does well at the theater.

So far, I havn't heard anyone say, "I'm sorry I wasted my time watching Firefly," and I've recommended it to a lot of people.

In other words, there aint sh-- at the movie theather this month.

Watch Firefly, watch Serenity, and be amazed that excellent quality writing gets cancelled.

So many excellent shows do get cancelled! They just dont draw the right #'s for some reason. Generic sitcoms can flourish, yet get sci-fi shows like firefly fail??

Firefly was EXCELLENT, especially for network TV. Right up there with Battlestar.

Serenity looks like a must-see!

I read an interesting stat in TV Guide (or similar) shortly after Firefly started. They said that Firefly was the 2nd most TiVo'd series ever -- something like 1 million people recorded it (only CSI was higher, if I remember correctly). Fox cancelled it because they were only getting roughly 3 million viewers/week. What they don't seem to understand is that the REASON it wasn't higher was because they didn't market the show at all (I saw one commercial, and it was VERY lame), they aired the series out of order (the pilot was aired last...), they pre-empted it for baseball several times, and they changed the start time once or twice. Oh, and it was on Friday night <_< Sounds to me like the TiVo people were the only ones able to watch it because of the crappy scheduling!

I never watched Firefly, not that it did'nt interest me, but because I was watching so many different shows at the time and I did'nt want to risk getting into another one.

I believe you when you say it is more than just a sci-fi. I am a big fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Angel, and I think Joss Whedon is one of the best writers out there today.

The way Fox handled Firefly, sounds very similar to the way WB handled Angel. The WB almost never promoted Angel, probably because it did not fit their stupid Dawson's Creek image. Then they screwed the show by just cancelling it with almost no warning.

I may just check out Firefly on dvd, so that I may see Serenity.

I disagree. I think Corpse Bride looks good, and the Exorcism of Emily Rose, and A History of Violence look interesting.

If you like Buffy/Angel, you'll definately appreciate the dialog in Firefly.

For those who are still on the edge about Firefly/Serenity -- Joss Whedon also did the screenplay for "Toy Story" and many episodes of Roseanne, amongst others. He also has written the screen play for the upcoming Wonder Woman movie.

Give the movie (and series) a shot :)
