He threw one in the Indy game.

Stats are for losers, but JP's preseason QB rating ranks 13th overall...better than Carson Palmer, who had a good second half last year.

After watching the replay of the Bears game, I was surprised how there seemed to be no commentary (except from JP himself) at all about the horrendous play of Losman. An entire defense stacked at the line, focused on stopping Willis, and JP just cannot find a receiver open downfield. Of course that is difficult to do when you constantly jump out of the pocket at the very least sign of a pass rush. He is skittish beyond all belief back there. An NFL QB must, at least occasionally, stand in the pocket and give receivers time to complete their downfield routes. A QB's main function is to throw the ball. not run, otherwise we would start Willis or Parrish at QB.  Willis will continue to average about two yards per carry until JP shows he is willing to stand in the pocket and punish a nine man front with some downfield throws. He can spend ten offseasons in Buffalo studying the offense, but its all for nothing if he can't stand in the pocket and pull the trigger.

Patience, as it will only be a matter of time before we start calling him a star. He has a lot to learn in the pocket as you have mentioned, but his mobility is going to be a tremendous assest for our offensive line.

I'm confused about these stats too. Are they supposed to be complete? Or just the leading passer on each team? JP is only the 4th rated qb on the Bills - scratch that, the 3rd as of todays cuts... I think they come from nfl.com. There are two interesting things to notice:

1. Half those guys are not the starters of their team. I don't know what criteria nfl.com is using - I suspect they are considering the pool qb's who are the passing yardage leaders of their team...

2. It is disturbing that everybody on that list has thrown for more yards than JP. In fact, he does not show up in the top 30, despite (I suspect) having had more game time than nearly every qb.

Maybe I'm just way too optimistic, but I finally watched the game on tivo last night and I thought JP looked reasonably good. After reading the media coverage and TSW for 2 days I was expecting a horror show, but in my view he threw quite a few nice passes, avoided the rush well and didn't hurt the team. Certainly he looked better than Bledsoe did last year.

It seemed like because of penalties and poor run blocking it was 3rd-and-12 about 5 times in the 1st quarter. Not fair to pin that on JP. He had a really nice drive that ended with a fumble by WM. Definitely a bonehead move to lose 20 yards down near their goal line, but that is going to happen once in a while. There were a number of times where he showed amazing ability to elude the pass rush.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: if JP plays average-to-good this year, we will be in the playoffs. I'm starting to think he's going to get us there.
