Chris Hubbard - RFA OL - Pitt

Recommended Posts

He has to be better than Mills, that isn't to say he'd sign here:

Steelers extended restricted free agent OL Chris Hubbard an original-pick tender.

The right of first refusal tender entitles Hubbard to a $1.8 million base salary. Teams can theoretically make him an offer sheet without giving up a draft pick, but the Steelers would be able to match. A former UDFA out of UAB's now-defunct football program, Hubbard held his own in four starts at right tackle last season. He also has the flexibility to play guard and even center.

@Yolo, from Gilbert's wikipedia page:

2016[edit]

On August 15, 2016, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Gilbert agreed to restructure $3.19 million of his 2016 salary into a bonus in order to clear $2.39 million in cap space.[19]

He started the first four games of the season and injured his ankle during a Week 4 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.[21] He missed the next three games but was able to return in time for Week 7 contest against the New England Patriots. Gilbert started 13 games and finished the season ranked the 13th best offensive tackle by Pro Football Focus with an overall grade of 87.1.[22]

The Steelers writers I know seem to think he's more of a guard masquerading on the outside than a true tackle.

That said, with two starting tackles entrenched and Jerald Hawkins, they might not fight to keep him. Posted a 1.68 10-split, 4.95 40 time at his pro day, dude can shift.

The rotoworld blurb confirms this as much. Seems like, at the very least, a versatile depth signing and, at the most, an upgrade at RT.
