Rochester D&C turns into USA Today

Well, they were the main paper of the Gannett chain. Neuarth started USA today and moved their HQ to the DC area. He was pretty bold in his vision - first color national paper. Bold graphic design. He took a lot of heat originally because they gave the paper away to hotels just to get the product in people's faces. Took quite a while to make a profit with it. But he was a prophet.

They closed the Times Union, and a dozen other papers. Now they're trying to compete with all the razz-a-ma-taz hyper-graphic driven web designs of the IntarWebs age. It's not that surprising. Like the graphical style change from iOS6 to iOS7 - a bit disconcerting at first, and it takes some getting used to.

My 2¢.
