DE and $$$

Recommended Posts

I think we'll be fine. As long as we sign the guys before they hit the open market. Ralph is spending now, which is interesting. I wonder if the problem was that the past GM's were just so awful that he didn't trust them to have "free reign" to bring in a guy like Mario, etc. Looking at some of the past spending those guys did, it never worked out. Ralph trusts Nix, so perhaps he's opening the wallet. Hopefully this good work gets rewarded w/ a SB ring!

I don't think RW is involved at this point. When was the last time we saw him? Or heard from him for that matter. If he's out of it, someone must be overseeing the business side on a day to day basis. Who knows? Could be Brandon, with Mary Wilson overseeing from afar.

Actually it is fair to be thinking about this stuff, Byrd and Andy are solid so I am sure the plan is to make sure they stay. Kelsey may end up looking great (in fact a bunch of them might, think about the Washington game last year, I know Beck was horrible but Morrison and Kelsey got sacks if I am not mistaken), Merriman may need a better contract. It is up in the air until the team starts playing.

Remember too, even though there was no change in the cap from last year to this year, the cap is about to blow up once the new TV money kicks in. I thought i have erad that it could jump from the current level of about 120 million all the way to 140 million or higher.

Here are the fact. 2012 Salary of the aforementioned players:

Shawne Merriman $2.5 Mill

Chris Kelsay $2M

Mark Anderson $2.5M + 6M/4 signing bonus so he would count ~4M towards the cap in 2012.

and well you have Mario Williams ~$14M

Obviously you have Mario's contract but not really much to see when it comes to Kelsay, Merriman, and Anderson they all should all be able to fit under the cap with tons of room left.

Again I think it's good to know how much money teams have tied up in different position groups but ultimately, it has to be viewed from an overall roster perspective, IMO.

For instance the Bills are paying a lot of money right now to their 2nd and 3rd QBs (meaning Thigpen and Brad Smith) and the Bills are also probably quite a bit above the league average in terms of Lindell and Moorman… both of who I believe are near the tops at their positions.

I believe that a team should pay its good players so if the Bills happen to have more than the usual allotment of quality players at DE, then that's a good thing.

Just don't overpay bad players and you'll almost always be able to manage the cap well… unless you have a $25 million/year quarterback.
