Gailey and Wannstedt - Best Bills play calling combo ever?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering would Chan Gailey and Dave Wannstedt would be the best offensive/defensive play caller combination the Bills ever had together in one season?

If not what combo is?

Wait, are you saying they are better than the combo of Turk Schonert and Dick Jauron?!?! Or AVP and Dick Jauron?!?! Or Dick Jauron with any combination of other coaches?!?!?

In all seriousness though, these guys have yet to coach together for us, and not to knock them but neither of these guys could find an NFL coaching job with anyone else...Soooo, isn't it a little early to dub them the best of all time? Don't get me wrong, I'm liking this combo as much as you are so far, but I think you are getting a little ahead of yourself.

Why do people keep saying this? Was Wanny not "asst head coach" last year with, one would have to presume, at least some input into the defense?

The only difference this season would be the title of DC and running the defense completely.

People keep saying that because Wanny himself said he was not getting involved in the play calling last year. The OP specifically refers to the best play caller combination, so in the context of this discussion they have not coached together as play callers. No one is sure exactly what Wanny did as a "coach" last year (I think/hope very little, given the outcome). This year is the first year Wanny will be coach of the defensive unit, and will obviously be calling the plays.

I would say that is one heck of a big difference. I know we are all hoping it will be

I suspect the bigger difference will be the off season additions to the D. Wanny is starting with far greater talent than his predecessor.

Could we please finish a winning season and at least make the playoffs before we start anointing people. Sheeesh.

Naw, why wait. Looking at the facts one thing that is certain now is that Wanny is undefeated in the role of being DC. Why wait until this claim is no longer true.
You are aware that there's a 4-year gap between Marchibroda's departure as OC and Philips arrival as DC?

JMO, but Kelly was pretty much the OC by the end of Marchibroda's tenure here (1991). Given the quick-scoring nature of the Bills' offense back then( that pretty much put the Bills D right back on the field as soon as they got off), I'd say that Corey's D (which ranked as high as 5th in the league during the Superbowl run), was a fine unit.

Again, JMO.

GO BILLSSS!!!!

19 and 0 baby!!!!!
.

Yeah - improper use of "combination"

More appropriately, the combination I would have liked to have seen.

I don't think Ted ever worked with Peyton Manning

Damn it - slipping in my old age.

Corrected twice in the same thread.

You are right - I forgot that Ted was let go after their 95 season where they lost a close one to the Steelers in the AFC Championship game. It was their subsequent tanking for the next two years that paved the way for them to draft Peyton #1 overall in 98.

Oh please! Were you born yesterday? What a ridiculous question. Look at the history books on the Bills before you post such a silly question.

They have called plays for many years. They hey have built a good reputation as play callers. They just haven't done it in the same season together for the Bills yet.

The point is that because of their reputations that they have already established, they could be the best play calling combination the Bills have ever put together in 1 specific season.

Generally the Bills in the past have been good at having 1 good coordinator and struggle on the other side of the ball. With these 2 guys as play callers, the Bills have the opportunity to have a top 10 offense and defense.

This is interesting to think about because of the potential it brings for the Bills being a quality football team on both sides of the ball.

So who has been a better offensive and defensive play calling combination that the Bills have ever had in 1 specific season?

I think this is easy. Chuck Knox [i can't believe I havn't seen his name yet] and who ever his DC was in 1980, when the Bills where #3 overall in NFL defence.

Right.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chan_Gailey

.437 as head choach. <_<

There are ALWAYS people on this board who basically are either appologists for the coaching staff and front office in place, or whoever it is, or worship them.

Show me a winning season.

Show me a playoff birth.

Show me a playoff win.

Your opinions are much like you avatar: crap.

Hey! Is this the baby everyone keeps saying they want to see?
