For my party we went to Pearl Street for dinner and to watch the Sabres game and some bar games then hit the Chip Strip for a while along with a few dive bars. I brought in the Birth Certificate I have been using all my life (including as ID to get into Canada before passports were required) and was told that what I had wasn't a REAL Birth Certificate. So I had to get one from Albany. Since I needed it quickly I had to expedite it, and pay the increased fee of course. By the time I got it, I needed to also expedite the passport if I wanted it in time. So of course, an additional fee was charged. That last ID cost me over $200. Same thing for me last year for the home opener. I had been putting off getting the passport (for no reason?) Then my Birth Cert wasn't in good enough condition, so I paid the crazy fee to get a new one fast, then paid the crazy fee to get the passport fast. The wife and I picked up our passports in Toronto (because there wasn't time to mail them) on Friday afternoon and headed to Buffalo for Sundays game. Got to the boarder and the guy says "how old are these"? I said about an hour or so....he gave them back to us and said "you are supposed to sign them you know". oops. Thanks! The law also states that CBP must admit US citizens under any circumstances - they cannot turn you around for lack of ID if you claim to be a US citizen. The problem one runs into without a passport is that the officer has to determine that you are who you say you are. Depending on the whims of the individual officer, that can take 10 minutes, or 10 hours, during which time you're in a holding tank waiting for them to sort you out. I believe they have been denying entrance to Canada for any US Citizen with a DWI (not me, but I have friends who have had issues). I believe they have to let you back to the US, but not into Canada.
