  1. Chaps - this is a learned and engaging thread that makes TSW a great place to be a Bills fan. I commend your discussion and analysis.

I have just gone back to the tape of the Colts game to check Trents performance in the first quarter (hurrah for NFL Game Pass HD). There are two key takeaways from the tape I was able to watch in 5 quick minutes (approx the first three offensive series). One relates to the passing game, one to the running game.

    Passing game

    1. On the whole the first three series were pretty poor from a passing perspective for several reasons. The OL had a tough time giving the QB more than a second or two of time in the pocket. The Colts DL puinned their ears back and made life tough.

    2. When Trent had time to drop back and plant, on about 50% of the throws he hesitated. Much of this is down to the situation the Offence was in. On one key third down on the third series, Johnson runs an out route about 6-7 yards from the LOS, but the 1st down marker was roughly 12 yards. Trent could have pulled the trigger at the bottom of his drop, but he hesitates to hit (I think) Parrish who is running a corner/seam route deeper. The pass falls well short as Trent gets hit as he throws.

    3. In the first series, another play where Trent gets time to drop, plant and throw is designed to be a comeback route to Evans down the right sideline. Trent has little hesitation with the pass and guns it. The pass hits the DB who wasn't looking as was almost an INT. The problem here, I think, is that Evans and Edwards just aren't on the same page. Evans has his man beat with no safety support but he breaks to the sideline, away from the QB at the down marker. From the placement of the pass, Edwards clearly expected the read to be back into the field of play, which was a move that Evans could easily have done... There's also a case (Tasker makes the point) for taking it deep on that play, which they make hay with later in the game.

    Running game

My comments here come as a real surprise. Andy Levitre had a bad first three series, characterised by two major mistakes in the running game. I don't suggest he is solely to blame, but definately more that 50% in both cases. My analysis here is very quick and dirty because I am at work, but...

    1. In the first series, the play call is a toss left to Spiller, with McIntyre and Levitre out in front. Levitre pulls from LG and he and McIntrye meet at the point of attack and get in each others way as they block the man at the edge. Levitre has got to be quicker out of his stance and down the back of the line here. Instead, he drops too deep on the pull, gets tangled up in a block (looks like a designed kick out block) that McIntyre has to make (into a seal) for him, and is then behind the play that Spiller takes for positive yards. Had Levitre got to his block in time, McIntyre would have been out in front of Spiller to spring him for more yards... Alternatively, McIntyre makes that block and Levitre kicks out at the second level, giving CJ more room to run.

    2. Third seies. Play call looks a bit like a long Trap to the right. Again, Levitre is very slow to make his pull down the back of the OL to the right and Spiller gets blown up 4 yards deep.

  2. I don't have a problem with Sully's analysis. The 'backers have looked very suspect in pre-season, none of them have stood out at all. They really need to work in the next couple of games to develop that pass defence and to get the run fits right.

I do disagree that you have to have stars to work a 3-4, that's not right. But you do need players to execute the system right - and our guys can't do that yet.

On Poz - I'm always so torn about him. Very worried that he could be a mope. On the other hand, he might be a perfect fit for the 3-4... I dunno. He has this year to play his way into my good books.

  3. Nick, I don't want to start a flame war with uncle flap. His points are valid, however, the one thing I will disagree agree with him on is with respect to graphics; they are not way better on the PS3. They should have been and they will be, but they are about equal right now. I think you may start to see a separation in coming years as the PS3 is more graphically advanced and developers get a better handle on it.

I have both a PS3 and 360, and they are both great pieces of tech, with multimedia capabilities. However, I break it down this way; if multiplayer is very important to you, go with the 360 b/c their online service is just plain better, but keep in mind it will cost about $50 a year, but if blu-ray movies are you thing, along with gaming, definitely get the PS3 - it is a great gaming device and STILL a great blu-rau player.

    Good Luck!

'preciate the advice. Cheers. I don't have HDTV yet, holding off until my current TV gives up the ghost. So all of this may be moot.

  4. In short, no. Our interior OL is set up right and will in a short period of time be comparible to any in the NFL if it isn't already.

Our OTs however are mopes right now and need a ton of work in the next year and offseason to improve them. We are a legit LT away from having a very good OL.

I should also add that I played football for over 15 years and in that time started at least one full season at each line position. Ross Tucker has it right about the relative importance/difficulty of each OL position. To move Wood to C wastes your best OL guy at the least important position, physically.

  5. No they didn't. They offered to activate him to the reguular squad for the rest of the season for league minimum. Buffalo gave him a 2 year deal and a 50K signing bonus. As a PS guy any team can offer him anything, just like an unrestricted FA. he can accept or not. he chose Buffalo because he thought he might have a better chance of starting/playing. But when you suck, you are going to suck even on a bad team. Brohm also has a very weak arm, and is no where near the strength of Edwards.

No he doesn't! The wisdom on Brohm is that he has a big arm, but needs work on other parts of his game...

  6. Here's my take:

Edwards has the Ones sewn up. He will start and be given enery opportunity to succeed. He has been acceptable in preseason, which is all you can hope for.

Fitzpatrick. I think he gets dropped. He has little upside over Edwards, has done little to unseat him and is entrenched in a battle for the Twos with a younger guy.

Brohm isn't starter material now, and the coaches don't think so either, or he would have been in with the Ones at some point. He needs time to learn the system and has more upside than Fitz. He's our number 2.

Brown won't be put on the PS. It's a waste of a place when he can learn the ropes on the roster as the 3rd QB. He won't play this year and has a shot to become the guy if he can show any kind of ability in the practise setting in the coming 2 years.

  7. Maybin is a major disappointment. He was projected as a 3-4 OLB and has failed to grasp that role in the first year he has been given the chance to play that position.

Apart from flashes of speed, i've seen nothing to impress me on a pass rush front, really not great use of his hands, and he has no bull rush to speak of.

He needs to show something now that Torbor is out for a while, or else he is going to be riding the pine and looking for a new job in January.

  8. I miss Lori too. I was able to met her in person at a game a few years back and she is a top notch person as well as a Buffalo Bills fan.

Lots of knuckle heads on the board these days with no respect for each others opinions.

Second that. Met Lori several times.

This board has changed. Posts = up. Quality of posts = down.

I post less frequently but still with no quality...

  9. From where I was, I didn't see Trent complete much of anything. I wasn't around the QBs much for the individual drills but when it came to 7 on 7 and the final scrimmage, he did very little to move the ball. Basically the same thing we're all used to, lot of dump off passes.

Maybe dump offs was the thing Trent was required to practise...?

We need to be careful not to judge too much from one practise.

We also need to remind ourselves that THIS report differs significantly to Fluff's from the same practise.

From what I have been able to gather, every QB has had his ups and downs, but the others haven't yet shown enough to unseat TE.

  10. Bad journalism. Triceratops lived!

All torosaurus specimens will now be reclassified as triceratops, the scientists said.

    So instead of this headline:

"DINO NOBODY HAS HEARD OF WAS IN FACT AN ADULT OF ONE THAT PEOPLE HAVE"

you get the story the Mail printed...
