  1. I've been a member here for over ten years (wow that long!?!) but my post count is kinda low (busy job in the past few years really limited my ability to get stuff down on 'paper').

I figure this place is as good as any for gratuitous postings to bump by post count. Agreed?

  2. This is the right place to have this conversation for sure. And fans have to know that as much optimism and hope they have, it's all down to 16 Sundays in the fall.

I think the optimism is well placed: look at the additions and re-signings and everyone will acknowledge that the Bills are theoretically better than they ended the year. Moreover, you look at the depth at a lot of positions and right now you don't know who is going to make the roster because of all the competition.

That last point is the double edged sword: looking down that WR depth chart you see that competition is there for spots, but you'd hardly scare anyone with the names the Bills have. At Tackle the question mark remains, despite the additions - and I think that point is equally relevant for Guard, TE, LB, Corner and Safety. We're probably set for starters at those positions but you have to wonder about the overall talent level.

As a fan of the Bills I am super pumped up for the season - as usual full of optimism and hope for a playoff charge.

As a football guy I am looking at the roster wishing camp was here already so we could start sorting the men from the boys.

    I think that's a 10-6 season... Hopefully good for a wild card.

  4. If you want a debate about BAD sports talk let's have it. Across North America it is terrible. Really slap dash and poor IMO. Way too much yakking from presenters with badly researched opinions and wayyy too often it's just a single presenter giving asinine views with lots of silent parts (Cowherd and Rome being prime examples).

I miss one thing about the UK as much as friends and family: BBC Radio 5 Live.

  5. I think if you want to know why the Bills whacked credible veteran cornerback Drayton Florence, look no further than the 103.3 passer rating he allowed foes last year in coverage (per ProFootballFocus.com). GM Buddy Nix is too smart to give away cornerbacks who can still cover, and with 2011 second-round pick Aaron Williams and this year's first-rounder, Stephon Gilmore, in house, Nix can afford to jettison an aging, slumping player.

That stat is as bad as I thought Florence was at times last year.

  6. It's not as though the Bills have done no homework at all on this guy. I'm sure they spoke with his agent and advised them that while they treat every player the same, and they want every player to compete for a starting role, Young will be brought in as a back-up and first compete with Tyler Thigpen and Brad Smith for a roster spot. If Young is still looking for a starter job, he isn't going to be brought in for a workout to be the back-up. It must be glaringly obvious by now, after FA and the draft, that no team thinks of him as a starter.

Now they must go to Plan B and say to themselves, okay, where is my best chance to be #2 and maybe to eventually become the starter by injury or by the starter failing, combined with which situation and organization is right, which head coach is right, and which city is right to get my failing career back on the right track?

The Bills back-up situation looks right. The team is on the rise. The OL is pretty good. The HC is perfect. The starter is the starter but not young and not a franchise guy. Buffalo MUST look like the best possible scenario to them, or close to the best.

From the Bills POV, Gailey probably likes his skills a lot. He is not the kind of character they like but there is no harm bringing him in and talking to him, as well as listening to him talk about the offense to see where his football IQ is like they do with pre draft visits and FA visits. They aren't committing to anything with the tryout and the interview. But it's possible that Young wows them physically, and it's a matter of whether he will be a good teammate. He hasn't shown that capacity yet.

I think they bring him in and strongly consider signing him and then let him go without a deal, thinking maybe they will bring him back sometime.

This is a fair and balanced response.

  7. I hear what you are saying, Nick. But I cannot believe the Bills would bring Young onto the roster unless they were sure he was in a realistic state of mind. That said, listen to just about any NFL player, especially a QB, when asked about their own abilities. Just about all of them have convinced themselves that they are the very best. I think that mindset is needed in order to make it in the NFL. So I would expect Young to come in with the goal to earning the starting spot, but again, the Bills have to be sure Young won't implode when he fails to beat out Fitz.

I agree to a point - but the NFL is a business, so at an individual level you have to think you can be the guy at an organizational level it has to be clear that if you have invested in a guy like the Bills have, he's going to be #1. Too much money invested in Fitz to think VY can or should compete.

Also - chemistry - Fitz has it with his guys. VY is a bit of a dick.

  8. Young in that same interview said the reason he believes he’s still starting caliber for the NFL is because Andy Reid told him he didn’t want to re-sign him for the Eagles because he considers him a starter and that he should be playing somewhere in the league instead of backing up Michael Vick.

This is worrying. it says something about mental state and capacity. Reid was clearly letting the guy down gently and taking the easy way out of cutting the dude.

I'm not against the Bills bringing him in, but is HAS to be as a backup so as to avoid the inevitable clamor for him to be the starter when Fitz has a bad game or when the national media decide to anoint him.

This is an opportunity for the Bills to permanently redefine VY's role in the league and only if they can do that should he be brought on board.

  9. Question - Did you choose 131 or did they offer it?

Best they had on offer. That or 136 but they were lower down (row 10). I wanted seats in the 130s from Row 20 or back.

Considered the Rockpile or endzones but in the end I've waited so long to get tickets why not pay the premium and get the good seats right off the bat.

I guess in future seniority will allow me to move closer to the 50.
