I know it’s a little late, and Babich doesn’t really have time to read my post and correct his game plan… so I guess I just have to hope he’s thinking similarly.

As I see it, they had a great plan last week.  They schemed and focused on stopping Henry, while containing Lamar so he couldn’t just take off and beat them with his legs.  Add in a couple early scores and they forced Lamar to win the game passing. (Which he did a good job of and got close)

This week, I see Kelce as the key player that drives their offense.  So I really hope they have a plan to focus on Kelce and not let him sit all alone in a zone coverage with no one around him.   Then they have to contain Mahomes so he can’t run for first downs.  Essentially, don’t give up the easy first down tosses to Kelce or to Pat scrambling untouched.

They still have to contend with the running backs, Worthy, etc.  But every time Mahomes gets in trouble he looks #1 for Kelce and an easy catch.  Or #2 to scramble for the first.  Contain those two players and I think they contain their offense.    Thats easier said than done!  But that’s why they make millions and I don’t.

    Go Bills!

I think it's a rule that Kelce must have a free release, and that no one can be within ten yards of him when he catches the ball. I believe it's in the same section of the rule book that says no defender can touch Mahomes at any time, and any incomplete pass on key third downs will result in a PI call.

This game needs to be a James Cook - Josh Allen run special. The Chiefs have been terrible against the run since the Bills beat them in Week 11. Getting something like 200 yards plus and controlling the clock would lead to the best chance of winning in my opinion. Can the Bills O-Line dominate the Chiefs like they did in the first game?

I agree. If I'm the Chiefs, I would sell out to stop the run and keep him in the pocket and throw to his slow receivers who don't get much separation, putting McDuffie on Shakir. Still not great, since Samuels has speed and Kincaid and Knox can catch (and then fall down), but it's a better option than letting the Bills run all day long, which they will do. In fact, they may still pull it off if KC does stack the box, that's how good the run game has gotten.

Yes Dwight Drane started for Leonard Smith in that Super Bowl.  Smith had a nasty infection in his knee from turf burn And, as it turns out, never played in another NFL game.  Smith hit like Taylor Rapp on speed.

I loved Levy, but I've always hated that decision to keep Henry (akin to Bishop) on the bench because of his "rookies don't play" philosophy. A few years later, he kept two rookies, John Parella and another big DT, on the bench in the Super Bowl when the Cowboys were pounding Jeff Wright and the other DTs into the ground. Remember that one TD run when Cowboys ran it every single play? Levy was terrific, but his stubbornness on those two occasions cost the Bills dearly.

Pretty sure it was Leonard Smith and Mark Kelso holding down the Safety spots that day.

That's right. What I recall is that Levy refused to play Henry in the Super Bowl that year when I think Smith was injured, opting to play a veteran bench player instead. Henry, who would turn out to be excellent when finally allowed to play the next year, sat on the bench while the secondary got torched. I would be surprised if he played in the AFCC the week before.

I get it, I did not forget.  They are currently on a playoff record 8-game winning streak so no team has forced their hand lately.  In their last 7 their high is 27 points so I'm crediting their Defense more than Mahomes for several of those wins.

I didn't mean you at all; I had in mind all the lavish praise media figures have heaped on Mahomes even in this down year, when he has been ordinary. It's gotten to the point that it's taboo to criticize him, which is a pretty strange phenomenon. I mean, he choked in that game against the Bengals, but how often have you heard anyone--anyone at all, at any time--ever bring it up? I don't even hear it mentioned on this board. I get that he redeemed himself since then big time, but not the extent that his meltdown, which cost his team a Super Bowl appearance, should be forgotten entirely.

When’s the last time the Chiefs were the ones to make game killing mistakes that cost them a playoff game?

Three years ago against the Bengals. KC was ahead 21-3 but Mahomes played poorly in the second half and threw an interception in overtime that pretty much ended the game.

Funny how people forget this meltdown in their deification of Mahomes.

And besides, to heap praise on the Bills and Allen would be to admit they were WRONG..and their egos just keep getting in the way.

Right, they come out with very strong opinions, but when they're wrong, they don't admit it, or they make excuses. That Broussard guy who bellowed all week about the Ravens dominance over the Bills insisted after the game that he was right all along, the Ravens are much better but they basically chose to lose against a weak team. What a job these guys have! Can you imagine showing up, shouting (essentially) that you ARE manly, that you're NOT too small down there, and that you're NOT afraid of your own shadow---and getting paid millions of dollars for it?

But if you get him off his spot and make him run around without allowing him to escape and run, it can have the same effect.  He becomes inaccurate.

That's what I've noticed. He's had some brilliant deep throws in his career, but he built his reputation by throwing short and medium passes to fantastic receivers who did the rest. He is also an underrated scrambler who extends plays and drives as well as anyone. His Achilles Heel is pressure, with a twist. He recognizes the blitz and gets rid of the ball effectively, but if a three- or four-man front gets in his face and the coverage is good, he is ordinary, even below average. When Tampa Bay was able to get that pressure in their Super Bowl, Beane took note, drafting Rousseau and, unfortunately, Boogie Basham the very next year, then breaking the bank to sign Von Miller soon after.

In short, one key to the game is whether Miller, Rousseau, Von, and the others can rattle him on their own while Milano or Dorian keeps him from taking off down the field. Not easy, when he has Reid calling a wide assortment of screens and crossers to get the ball out of his hand quickly. At the risk of stating the obvious, the best game plan for the Bills will be to control the ball with the run game, build a lead, and force KC to play catch up. That may happen, but I suspect it's more likely that the game will be a grueling defensive battle as the two sets of coordinators, all four of them excellent, each meeting move with countermove all game long.

Brilliant design for a few reasons...

First, it occupies a blocker because he has to respect the fact that player is up on the LOS and could be rushing. This prevents double teams and gives their players a 1-1 matchup in at least 2 spots even when only rushing 3.

Second, it allows the Bills to send pressure from one side by overloading it and then have a defender ready to fire freely once the QB flushes to that side.

Third, the LB almost is "hiding" behind the big OLine so Mahomes may lose sight of him as he moves around the pocket and as he steps up, there that player is coming free through a hole to tackle him. Kinda like what happens on the Bernard sack where Mahomes is running thinking he has space and here comes Bernard full speed from a short distance away and he has no chance.

Would be shocked if the Bills don't deploy this a lot in this game.

Great use of Dorian Williams' speed and athletic ability, too.

Mahomes' scrambling ability is underrated. Lamar has amazing speed and juking ability, and Allen is big, fast, and elusive, but Mahomes gets a lot of yards on his scrambles, even if he looks like a four-year old running around in his backyard.

Awe man I hope he’s not doing the game this week …All he did was give Lamar Jackson a rim job the whole game

I don’t care what anyone says I don’t think the Chiefs are a good team at all… You go look at there schedule and see all the crap teams they’ve barely beaten by a point or two.. And 4 or 5 of the games would have been a loss if it wasn’t for the refs or Denver missing a fg… As long as we cover d**k face Kelce and don’t let him run wide open like every one else does and the refs stay out of the way it should be a comfortable win…

I wouldn't underestimate KC. They're a different team in the playoffs, and the Bills had to play exceptionally well to beat them this year. I do think the Bills will win, but KC is going to show up. They won't be sending gifts our way like the Ravens did.

One extra note on this point.

My wife isn't a big football fan but she watches when she likes certain players. She loved Peyton Manning so she was a Colts and then Broncos fan. She likes Henry a lot so she watches his games and she'll watch the Bills games to know my mood when I'm coming home since I watch elsewhere.

Unprompted, my wife said our D was awesome against the Ravens except for that last drive and that's why we won. I said the national narrative would be that the Ravens lost it. She insisted that Lamar didn't stand a chance because of what our D was doing.

Smart wife. Tell her she should apply for a job at ESPN.

I mean, EVERYTHING went the bills way and they barely won. I don’t know which team is better, but the ravens probably have a better roster.

I don't agree with this take. The Bills forced those turnovers, and they didn't just happen. And the score was as close as it was in part because of the situation, like McDermott going for three points because they were already five points up, and the offense running the clock down because they were in the lead. The Bills had this game under control from the middle of the second quarter on. They played smart, smash-mouth football and won. The Bills are the better team, QED.

We had very good luck yesterday.  Playoff Lamar gave away two unforced turnovers.  Refs gave us a DPI setting up a TD score, that was questionable was lucky.  Not getting called for late hit on Lamar was also lucky. Andrews dropping the ball was also luck.  Thats five lucky plays in one game.  The only bad luck play was the bogus holding call on Dawkins in the first half.  +4 on luck  may be the best we have every had in a playoff game.

Depends how you define "luck." If it's luck that Andrews drops a pass or Lamar fumbles a ball, why is it not luck that Andrew catches a ball or Lamar throws a TD? No, the Bills simply played better yesterday, which means they were the better team. We can debate the relative talent of the rosters, but that doesn't get you very far. All the questions are settled on the field, a harsh reality that Bills fans have had to live with forever. Yesterday, we were on the right side of that calculus. Let's enjoy it.

He understands defenses and leverages. Reid designs his offense to exploit them and Kelce is the most intuitive and nuanced route runner at TE I've ever seen

Do you honestly believe teams just forget to cover him😂😂

Forgot? No. Chose not to? Yes. That's what baffles me. I'm not seeing nuance on his routes, at least not tonight. I'm seeing a free release into wide open space.

Kelce is pretty much open every play, yet Texans D coordinator does nothing different 🤦‍♂️

I'd like to hear a reporter, just once, ask these dozens of coordinators why they chose not to cover Kelce. I'm truly curious. Even if he's being "schemed open," why not cover him anyway and take your chance on the scary "scheme"? He just plods to an open spot, with no one within 10 yards, catches the ball and plods as long as he can. And the rest of the league is helpless to stop him. It doesn't make sense.
