  1. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/...sting-starters/

this issue came up in another post about a week ago.....i believe someone said it was illegal to not play to win.

basically the current rule says that teams have "earned" the right to rest starters in preparation for the playoffs, but that the competition committee will review this rule for next season.

How the league office can compel a team to play its starters is difficult to see in execution.

  2. ... like the Vikings play this year.

I can see that, but I still like having the DTs penetrate. As a former interior lineman, I hated nothing more than quick DTs who were good at getting penetration. However, this means that the LBs need to be bigger and more physical so that they can take on free blockers. Enough small LBs.

Keith Ellison being the best example. He'd be a backup on 75% teams in the NFL, yet he's a starter for the Bills (prior to going on IR)

  3. Too bad that the game has turned into more of a novelty than something meaningful.

Would'nt it be great if this was a semi-final playoff game, which would put the winner into the national championship game?

I hate to say it, but the bowl games have lost their luster.

New Years Day used to be such a huge day. Waiting till Thursday for the BCS championship has definitely taken the luster off NYD.

And Chi-Fil-A Bowl? What's with that?!!

  4. Hi all...

Just thinking aloud here with Sal's information and then watching yesterday's conference. I find it very odd that both Kelly and Thomas both spoke openly of Cowher yesterday.

If an individual(s) had prior knowledge of a coaching candidate coming to their perspective teams why would they openly mention it in a press conference before it was official?

If an individual(s) was asked their formal opinions by the front office and they were rejected the only way to really get that across to stubborn ownership would be in a public venue like yesterday.

If an individual(s) mentions openly who they want as head coach in a formal venue it tells me they have no input or any current knowledge of what direction the team is going to head.

    Any thoughts?

Agreed. Kelly and Thomas (especially the latter) I don't suspect have some daily view and strong influence on the goings-on at One Bills Drive.

So use the art of public persuasion / pronouncements to try to influence the thinking. Can't say I blame them for trying.

  5. I think that the Bills aren't going to take another DE with their 1st round pick. The Bills are going to take a LT or a QB with their 1st round pick. I think that the Pick is going to be a LT due to the fact that a top 8 pick is going to need to fill a big franchise changing need and the Bills have a huge needs along the O-line and the biggest need at LT.

How the Bills in this mock don't draft a O-lineman in either round 1 or 2 is beyond me and shows how bad this mock draft is. If there is a top LT available for Buffalo to take then I don't see how they don't take him.

With one of the weakest quarterback classes in years, I really wonder whether we could draft a QB at our pick position

  6. The Nix hire was done in order to be able to pursue Cowher this weekend with the GM question answered. If it doesn't happen by Tuesday it's not happening. But if it doesn't happen it will not be because the lowballed Cowher. In fact they are likely making a record-setting offer. The uncertainty of life after Ralph seems to be the sticking point.

    PTR

I have no doubt they're willing to make a record-setting offer. But are they also ready to offer record-setting offers to hire the calibre of assistants that Cowher would want to bring in?

  7. a shed...lol. do your research instead of listening to the media's bs.

James is a wuss and should be cut. Texas Tech just ruined their football program because of a whiny kid. No doubt about it.

Do we really have the full case history on Leach's employment file? The James case is getting the bulk of the press on Leach. But until we see Leach's full employment file and citations for contravening his employment contract, asserting that TT "ruined their football program because of a whiny kid" is disengenuous.

  8. The game all about marketing, marketing, marketing.

The NHL ranks below college football and college basketball on the radar screen in the US. They're doing anything they can to increase the exposure for the product.

And coincidentally, they're clever to do it right in the thick of college bowl season when talking heads are all talking about bowl games . And poof, we switch over for a short report on this hockey game being played outdoors at Fenway Park, or Soldier Field, or Ralph Wilson Stadium, or Yankee Stadium (next year?).

  9. If Nix has half a brain in his head, he won't cut loose functional players who may not fit long term until he has better replacements on the roster.

The past practice of purging the roster of functional players just so we are forced to spend premium draft picks to fill holes instead of accumulating talent and playmakers was ludicrous. losing out on Ngata because they had to draft Whitner as an immediate starter because they cut Milloy has been standard operating procedure for the Inner Circle Jerk.

We will see if things change

Ditto for using using a #1 draft pick on Marshawn Lynch after trading McGahee to Baltimore (but that trade at least yielded us some draft picks)

  10. 3 years with the same inept HC and the likes of Steve Fairchild, Schonert, and AVP. That coaching would have destroyed Steve Young. For Trent's sake I hope he leaves this laughing stock of a franchise. Watch him go to Carolina this offseason with there running game, a quality OL, and Steve Smith. He'll lead them to the playoffs while we will be watching yet another Fitz incompletion or Brohm sack.

I could also see Edwards on Denver, as Chris Simms is not the answer as the backup to Kyle Orton.

Josh McDaniels is the type of quarterback-friendly coach that could give Edwards the coaching and grooming that he lacked from the mediocre trio of QB coaches / OCs he played for here that you mentioned

And quarterbacks can be resuscitated into serviceable quarterbacks or at least reliable backups. Look at what Shanahan did with Jake Plummer in Denver

  11. Anyone going to the game Sunday planning to take any signs to show Buffalo Bill Cowher some love? The game is on CBS, so it'd be nice to get some camera shots of signage back on the halftime/postgame in the studio for Bill to see. Lets show Cowher some love a la TKO in 2k2!

    Interesting idea.

    Anybody?

  12. Finally, some sanity

Levitre, Wood, and Byrd are promising young players to build from.

Maybin ... time will tell ... few DEs have a major impact in their first few years like linebackers. He's a project as many people have acknowledged and we have so little data upon which to form a definitive assessment. He hardly played. And who knows what the future holds if he was to move to the outside LB position.

  13. rotoworld.com

He looked pretty good in Philly when McNabb was out for a couple of weeks. He put up a couple of 300 yard games if I remember correctly, granted that was behind Philly's OL. Should he be a guy that the Bills persue in the offseason if he's available? If the price tag is reasonable, I say we should look into it.

There is precedent for it working. Schaub moved on from Atlanta to have decent success with the Texans.

They key is to avoid bringing in a journeyman backup like Kelly Holcomb or Ryan Fitzpatrick

  14. The point of the Saban/Alabama link was that you should not simply accept a person's word at face value. Like Nick Saban, Marty Schottenheimer might just decide he is interested in the Bills coaching job. In other words, never say never.

Asserting that you're not interested in the job is a good negotiating ploy and a way to raise the amount the other side is willing to pay.

Schottenheimer may in fact not be interested but if he is, asserting he's not may elevate what he could be paid.
