  1. So...You think not bringing Byrd back = sacrificing yet another season in the name of a rebuild? He's one player...And if you don't think the Bills are in year one of a complete overhaul I don't know what to tell you...Yes it looks very promising due to the Coaches...But it's preseason...And this is a VERY young team...The fact that it looks so good is further incentive for the Bills to make darn sure they get something in return for Byrd next off season...This roster is going to need that extra pick...It will build on something much bigger than what this season may or may not be if they give in to Byrd's pos agent...Plus chances are still very likely Byrd is back by game 2-3 anyway...

Don't get me wrong...I'm not blind...I know Byrd is a very good Safety...Probably a top 10 Saftey in the NFL...But the writing is on the wall with this one...He does not want to be in Buffalo...To me it's crystal clear...He's allowing his agent to push this thing to the very end for nothing more than the insurance that the Bills cannot secure compensation for him next season...He does not want to be here...Now...I'm not sure if it's simply because he's a west coast guy, or because the Bills have sucked since he's been here, or whatever...But I'm going under the educated-guess/assumption that the guy does not want to sign long term in Buffalo for anything less than being the top paid S in the NFL...And he is NOT the top playing S in the NFL...So...If I'm the Bills there is no way I'm giving an inch...And whatever that leads to...well...it's just going to have to do for now...I think they overcome it somehow, someway regardless... B-)

But in no way do I believe that Jarius Byrd is the difference maker between another 6-10 season and the playoffs...EJ Manuel? Yes...JB...Not so much...

He is just one player but he is also one of the Bills best players. This may be an overhaul year but that doesn't mean we don't want to make a run for the playoffs. The 49'ers went 13-3 and were a field goal out of the super bowl in their first year with Jim Harbaugh even though they were considered one of the worst teams in the league prior to the season starting. I see no reason the Bills can't attempt something similar to that.

  2. The 1st string defense was ferocious as a whole!! I'll tell you what....it's been a very long time since I've been this optimistic about our defense and the depth. Just think....Mario and Kiko didn't play....BE AFRAID....VERY AFRAID!! GO BILLS!

And don't forget Byrd isn't in either.

  3. Reading the posts on here that suggest that Kolb shouldn't start on Friday, or even be cut (!?) strike me as a bit loony. The idea that Marrone should end the QB competition, and essentially abandon his preseason strategy based on EJ's decent showing in the first half of the first preseason game, and without even giving Kolb a chance in the preseason, is crazy. Marrone didn't sign Kolb on a whim. I'll admit, the knee injury is pretty weird, and his absence during the week of the scrimmage was unfortunate. But, people on this forum who dismiss Kolb as some sort of weakling hack can't hold a very high level of faith in our new head coach.

Personally, I hope EJ gets (and deserves) the starting job come September. But, Marrone has been very clear about how he will fill that role, and unless Kolb's knee injury is much worse than is being reported, I don't see any reason to change that very sensible strategy.

Thank you. Everyone seems to be dismissing Kolb even though there's a very decent chance he'll be starting the season for the Bills. EJ played about as I expected from a highly drafted rookie QB and no more or less. I see no reason to declare EJ the starter after that first preseason game and as someone who's expecting playoffs from the Bills this season, I expect a higher level of play at QB than that game whether it comes from a more comfortable EJ or Kolb or Tuel.

  4. There is not a single WR of the 8 contenders for a WR slot on this team right now that I would trade straight up for DHB...seriously.

    Stevie - Hell no

    Woods - Hell no

    Goodwin - Hell no

    Graham - Hell no

    Rogers - Hell no

    Smith - No

    Easley - No

    Kaufman - No

I think every guy on this roster has more upside than DHB, even Easley and Kaufman. I am glad we didnt sign some scrub vet, we got some serious youth and speed through the draft and UDFA that can ball. I don't see any way we dont keep at least 6 WR's.

My 6 are (in no particular order): SJ, Woods, Goodwin, TJ, Rogers, Easley...with Brad Smith being a surprise cut and Kaufman being signed to the PS. Easley can play ST and is cheaper than Smith. Smith has a lot of speed, but so do our other guys and they are more natural route runners IMO than Smith and several will be cheaper options too. Not a lot of people have any faith in Easley, but the FO and staff made some nice comments about him early on this off season and I think he will be a surprise player at camp. He also fits the profile better than Smith of a being a bigger guy who can be open when he is not.

Either way, the first 5 guys are locks for this roster assuming none of them (I am talking to you Rogers) does something stupid to get cut. The final spot will be a battle for Easley, Smith, and Kaufman...I can honestly see any one of these 3 guys making it, but I think cost is what will be Smith's nail in the coffin here, especially since him having speed is no longer a commodity that lacks in the rest of the group.

C'mon, how can you say you wouldn't take DHB over Graham or Brad Smith. I'm iffy on Goodwin since we haven't seen what he can do but DHB is pretty much a more experienced version of him. Everyone is seriously undervaluing him right now. He's not a great wide receiver but he is a pretty solid speedster and probably around what Lee Evans was. I would take Stevie and Woods over him for sure as well as Rogers for now, but DHB is a better receiver than everyone else on the roster.

  5. I liked both Eric Moulds and Lee Evans. I strongly believe Evans was under valued by many Bills fans.

However, Moulds was definitely a better all around receiver. Not even close.

I agree. Moulds was definitely the better receiver but Evans was a solid contributor during our worst quarterbacking years. He wasn't the best starting receiver but he was a really good second.

  6. I can't speak to Hughes' play because I never really noticed him play.

But to say that "they got the better of the deal?"

In my book Sheppard had almost zero value. Every time he played he sucked. You could have gotten equivalent play from an undrafted free agent.

    That's a weird take.

Well from their perspective Hughes was basically what you just said there and they see Bradham the way we see Hughes although probably not as optimistic.

  7. This trade is a head-scratcher for this very reason. I've never seen Hughes play, but stat-wise, he did seem to "turn the corner". Considering Nix has a proven track record of turning garbage into gold, I think we may have just picked up a very good player.

Ya I don't know, all the Colts fans I've talked to said he was terrible and most think they got the better deal out of the trade.

  8. Let's wait until training camp and pre-season to make that determination. If Manuel looks halfway decent, I say start him.

I agree that we should wait until training camp and pre-season but I would put in whoever is playing the best no matter who it is. This team wants to win this year and the best QB should be playing.

  9. LOL, High Hopes. I hope they go 16-0, but let's be realistic. I think this is gonna be a hard year for the Bills. Lots of growing pains and not enough Pro Bowl talent on the roster means anywhere from 2-5 wins imho...

If we only got 2-5 I would be shocked. I just don't see this team regressing with a coaching staff that looks like it completely blows our old coaching staff out of the water. Combine that with a moderate upgrade in talent and I can't see any reasons for us to do worse than we did last year.

  10. Byrd will NOT be starting week 1.

this is going to be a long drawn out process.

    it's going to get ugly.

I say he reports around week 10 just in time to get credit for a vested year.

That's how I'm seeing it go down. This front office will get done what needs to be done but I also don't see them overpaying anyone. I'm still hopeful a deal gets done during the offseason though.
