I say ship them to Toronto!
-
I think most intelligent people last week, i.e. anyone who isn't a Jests fan, realized that a barely-win over the Miami High School Football JV Squad Dolphins wasn't a showing that the Jests were the best in the East. That said, Buffalo and NE are both solid teams and there will be a long season battle potentially for the top spot. I wish, actually that Brady hadn't been hurt because even with him I think we could give them a run for their money at home this year. That said, they weren't crying last year when we had 12 guys hurt and they put up 56 points. Getting ahead of ourselves is why 2003 hurt so bad. Let's see how we do in the next two or three weeks before we make season concluding prognostications.

Did anyone feel like our D-Line was constantly being held?
ax4782 replied to ACor58's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Completely agree. The ref must have thought he deployed a teal colored parachute to slow down on his way to the QB. And that was on the JAX scoring drive. That would likely have killed their momentum, the way the relatively weak hold on Butler killed our second drive after our opening TD. That one had me fuming. I do, however, think that the officiating in the game was decent, with the exception of the holding calls. Yet, as Bills fans, isn't that something we should take for granted at this point? This has been going on for years, and we've been complaining for years. Just take it for granted that we are going to be on the receiving end of some non-calls every game and that we'll have to overcome that. -
This old thing again? I'm sorry but the DTs have looked great so far in the first two games. I think the DL we have is solid as a rock. The Jags, who ripped us apart running the ball were held to 98 total rushing yards on 29 carries. That's 3.1 yds per carry. I don't think the DL is bad at all. Sure, if you can get another guy in there with even more size and quicks, fine, but I don't think that will be our biggest need going into the draft next season. We'll see, but I would guess we look at the C, TE, or LB position. We have solid starters at 2 of the 3 LB spots, but with Crowell likely gone and Ellison being a bit undersized, I would look for us to get an LB who would solidify the D with some size, speed and depth. Just my guess.

Will Poz be fined for that facemask on MJD?
ax4782 replied to Fingon's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Based on the facemask crackdown the league put on this year, I would guess that even though there was no malicious intent, he'll probably end up with a $5,000 fine. No big deal. -
On this one, I'm totally with you and always have been. I'm still waiting for all the folks who hated on Jauron all offseason long and said he would not put a quality product on the field (yes that's you krazykat, sisyphean bills, etc.) to come out and at least admit that thus far, the offseason moves have proved solid, and that the coaching has been worlds better since the OC switch and the fact that there is truly better talent on the team the DJ has to work with than he has ever had. Sure, they'll probably say that DJ will find a way to screw it up, but from what I've seen, this is a different and much better team than what we started with last year. That being said, we may need to wait a while before any of those folks is willing to come out and say they were wrong.

I remember that I have both supported Youboty, but also acknowledged that perhaps they could get value for him in a trade. For the latter comments I have made, I whole-heartedly admit that would have been a mistake. If some here had their way, he would doing this with Cleveland, and seeing them on MNF with him on the team, if he were playing this well, would not be a good thing. We all make mistakes.

ROLF!!!!

The Youboty stop was likely the "Play of the Game" in terms of helping us most in getting the win. That being said, the pass and catch to Hardy were far and away the best effort of the game. The pass to Evans was good, but the effort on the part of TE and Hardy on that catch were stupendous.

Things that need to improve
ax4782 replied to Captain Hindsight's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree that the tackling at times was weak, but mostly towards the middle and the end of the third quarter when they had been on the field for so long. I think that had more to do with it than the fact that they can't tackle or have trouble tackling. They were solid in the first half and very solid in the Fourth Quarter when it counted. Kick coverage wasn't as good today, but they looked solid against the Seahawks. We did a good enough job to win, though the on-side kick annoyed me a bit. That being said, I try not to criticize the STs much. We have one of the top units in the league and even they are going to have a bad game here and there. I chalk this one up to that occasional bad game. The running game was fine. Buffalo is averaging 5 less carries per game this year, and keep in mind, we never had the ball in the third quarter. Had we even had a solid drive in the third quarter, ML would likely have had 70+ yards so, those are solid numbers. Frankly, not getting him beat up early this year, will pay dividends at the end of the season. Also, he and Freddie had a combined 90+ receiving yards. -
Our Running Game is Awful, Yet Produced 167 total yards
ax4782 replied to CJPearl2's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
See CJ's post to start the thread. He's saying that if you count the screens as runs, and several of them may as well have been, our backs totaled 167 yards and a TD. That's not bad. -
He also had two great throws, the 37 yarder to LE and the 7 yarder right down the chimney to Hardy who made a tremendous catch. The fact is, TE has made all the throws asked of him, both short or long, and is making great decisions. I don't care about check downs, I care about completions, yards, and most importantly wins. Edwards looked good today, and the Bills won. Checkdowns that go for 15+ yards are as good as a fifteen yard completion down field. Either way the same result.

ax4782 replied to CJPearl2's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Ditto that. We may not have had over 100 "rushing yards" but the backs look solid. Not to mention that ML is averaging 5 less carries per game this season over last season, which will allow him to be much more rested and capable at the end of the year when we may need him for a run, or the playoffs (knock on wood). I think people are too concerned with their fantasy team's stats, and not enough about the overall success of the team. Freddie and Beast looked awesome today. You want to talk about a bad running game, the Jags two backs who were top of the league last year didn't exactly have solid days "rushing" the ball. People are really having to fish for reasons to be pessimistic about the outcome today. -
Did Derrick Harvey play for Jags today?
ax4782 replied to CJPearl2's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He did play, but had little impact for the Jags. Quentin Groves on the other hand played well for them and his FF almost killed us. Good thing the D came through. The Bills did look good, and their O-Line was excellent today, despite the two sacks. -
Didn't see it. If Del Rio didn't go to midfield for the shake that's pretty crappy. The fact is, his team had it and blew it and the Bills outplayed his team badly in the Fourth Quarter. The catch by Hardy was legit and perhaps the best play of the Bills' season up to this point. I hope to see more plays like it. The fact is, that would have been a touchdown either way in the old days of the push out rule, but Hardy did a great job, even with the push, to get his feet in bounds. The forward pass redux was correct, and the ten second penalty was legit. Other than that, they got a lot of favorable calls, and if Del Rio really is being a baby, he doesn't even have a legit beef.

Brad Butler, ST, DT's, Favre, et al
ax4782 replied to The Big Cat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I thought the DL looked very solid in the first half. However, after being on the field for essentially 15 straight minutes, they were, understandably, hot and tired. Yet, they got it together in the end to preserve the win and that's what top ten D's are able to do. I think being super critical of the D is pushing things a bit. The O-L had two bad plays all game, the two sacks, otherwise they have played very well. Three sacks given up in two games is pretty solid play. At two and oh, the Bills have looked like a solid team. I'm not getting overly excited at this point, because there is a lot of time left in the season for us to have all sorts of things happen, but I like the way this team has played. That being said, I think your post shows the right mentality. Be excited about the start, but tempered about the future. Let's see how they look over the next three weeks against the Raiders, Rams, and Cardinals before going nuts. -
I think that the questions about TE and his ability should be dying out soon. He has looked poised and has shown that he can make those long throws. In two games he has completions to Lee Evans of 42, 37, and 32 yards. What has that about not making long throws? I think the noodle arm argument is making like a dinosaur as well. Being efficient and mixing in throws to all parts of the field show why Turk was a great hire. Buffalo's offense looks good. Hopefully we can keep it up.

Game Ball: Who are you giving yours to?
ax4782 replied to lets_go_bills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Trent Edwards. 20-25 239 1TD. That speaks for itself. He looked like OUR QB today. Jackson definitely deserves a nod as well, and on D, Youboty showed why it was a good thing that we didn't trade him. Great tackler in the open field. -
That said it.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves and jinx this thing. Let's see if there is a letdown next week against the Raiders at the Ralph. If the Bills are 4-0 going into the Arizona game, I'll start to consider the possibility that we could win the East. Until then, I'm proud of the team, but I'm tempering my overall expectations. This is a long season and a lot of things could happen.
-
I think this has the potential to be a special season, but temperance at this point is the best course. I recall that we started 2-0 in 2003 beating two good opponents, one on the road, and we missed the playoffs. I am super excited, and I think that the Bills look better in all phases of the game than we did in 2003, but I want to see some carry over to the next two weeks with games that we will be clear favorites. We need to definitively beat teams we should beat. I haven't been excited about this team in a long time, but I am still remaining tempered about overall expectations. Also note, TE looks like a franchise quarterback through two games. He's getting LE and the other receivers into the game and is utilizing the backs very effectively.

That catch in the endzone was a veteran play when we needed it most. Hopefully, he continues to improve next week.

To All Those That Said Don't Draft A Tall WR
ax4782 replied to truth on hold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There were a few more than that, but most of them said they would wait until the second or third round. I think Hardy made one play today that showed why we needed to get a tall WR. I was for drafting Devin Thomas in the first round, I admit it, but I also suggested that if Thomas wasn't the pick, Hardy made sense. He looked good on his two pass completions today, and that TD was pretty good. I remember a lot of posts from people saying that Buffalo would regret not drafting O-Line and D-Line. I haven't seen many of those folks on the board in the last two weeks. Maybe because both of those positions have looked excellent. -
Our running game is well.......awful
ax4782 replied to marauderswr80's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Excellent point. Though I think our not having the ball in the third quarter probably didn't help his numbers. -
Granted, he gave up a costly sack, but the fact was, for the most part, he was extremely solid. Groves had a great jump on the play, and I don't think any tackle in the league could have held him up. That being said, it was his first game back and they were playing in 110 degree temperatures, and Peters admitted that he wasn't quite 100 percent today. I think getting on the critical bandwagon here about Peters would be a bit premature. Buffalo has only given up three sacks in two games. That's pretty good, regardless of what happened as a result. The Bills played well on offense and defense today and won the game.
