1. Buffalo Blues

    216 S Highland Ave

    Pittsburgh, PA 15206-3913 Map

    (412) 362-5837

Doors open at noon on Sunday.  If the agreement is the same as it was last year with us Bills fans (it's being finalized tonight), we'll have our own room/area with a big screen and sound.  Wings are good (considering the area), food is good (I like the chicken quesadillas), and some okay drink specials if I recall.

    See you there...

    764033

I'm assuming you guys are there for every game? I'll keep it mind, I might be able to swing it a couple of times this year. The mother-in-law lives close to there and it's all about my wife having something to do while I play.

  2. The point spread for this game keeps going up and up and up.  At the start of preseason is was Pats by 7.5  Halfway through preseason, it was Pats by 8.5  Now it's Pats by 10...

The over/under is 41.  Seems a bit high to me, given our offense, but we'll see.

Hmmm.....Seems like the national media is driving the perception of this game. Have the Pats played that well or is Buffalo just being written off? There's been a lot of belly aching on this site about how the "analysts" are beating up the Bills. I wonder how many people will put their money where their mouth is and take advantage of that injustice?

  3. When I woke up this morning I said to myself, "Please let there be another thread on TSW in which anger is expressed toward a national sports media outlet/personality because they believe the Bills to be terrible.  PLEASE!".

    And my prayers were answered.

    761901

I don't really think of it in an angry way, and I'm not saying the Bills aren't terrible. I would look for something like even though the Bills have decent skill position players and a defense that was down last year the Jets have done better in the draft and their defense is improved enough to where they will win more games than the Bills. I guess that's a tough thing to do.

As a fan I don't mind being told the Bills will suck this year. Chances are they will. I still don't like it, especially when it comes from guys like Glazer who ride the wave of popular sentiment. They are what they are though, and if they get a piece info that helps me win my fantasy week or league that's great. I just don't look for team analysis from those guys. I prefer to read someone like Gil Brandt and take what I can from him.

And no, he's not dead on. Every year is a new year and what happened during the last 6 or 8 or whatever years ago doesn't matter. Ask Brett Favre about that. That's one great thing about football, just about everyone has a chance.

  4. Watching the best damn sports show because I couldnt sleep, the host asks the panel of geniuses. So who wins the Brady Quinn sweepstakes this year the Jets or the Bills? Glazer throws in 2 pennies and says and I quote" the Bills organization is terrible from the ownership downto the players ,JP is not the answer and they will draft Brady next year". Ok I know theres alot of threads about guys complaining about reporters but to say that we are worse than the Jets and that Ralph and Marv our totally incapable of running a team is ignorant and stupid. Jay Glazer needs to get off of Terrell Owens nuts and do some real research.

Why dont these guys actually add some substance to this show and stop blowing frontrunners. An original thought would be ideal.

    761823

I don't know when they recorded that show, but I saw it last week. Unfortunately for our senses they put him on a show where he has to provide something more than "I heard so and so is..". He's just a info slut (like Clayton etc.) and doesn't have much capacity for analysis. So he gets his rocks off a few times a year by sharing his opinion and he puts together something to piss somebody off. Whatever. I'm sorry I saw the show too, I thought maybe there would be some good analysis.

At least it wasn't freaking poker!!!!!

  5. ok but I don't think I'll pick up Brooks.  I have already cut Wiggins and picked up Simms, but like I said before who should I start at Qb this week and most likely for the next 8 weeks.  Brees or Simms?  I'm leaning towards Simms.

    761349

Hines Ward had the same surgery in 2002 and missed a week or so. From what I understand it didn't burst and even Hines was saying he should be back week 2 or 3. Something about going in with a scope. So tell your Dad to put the meat cleaver down and step away from the patient. :(

I like Simms too, TB should be cranking up the Gruden offense this year.

  6. I've been known to weigh matchups & homefield too heavily myself and even I disagree....McNabb has to be the play unless Favre's matchup is more favorable by a wide margin; this week doesn't qualify.

    761814

Sorry, it's late and I transposed/f'd up. McNabb is the play considering the matchup. I'm putting my rankings together for a draft tomorrow night, hopefully I won't mess myself up! :(

  7. Its a 10 team league. Thanks for the opinions/comments. I still dont know who Im starting at QB.

    761787

You're looking at matchups until one of your qb's separates (if he does).

So Chi @ GB or Phi @ Hou?

In 2005 receiving D rankings by yardage (per nfl.com):

    Chi #5 at 196.7 ypg

    Hou #24 at 232.9 ypg

Hou has changed their D for the better, but that may not make it great in the first week. I would lean toward home field and Favre.

Pick up Driver if he's out there, and watch for G Jennings early in the year.

  8. Holy Cardinals Batman!!!

You will go as the cardinals go, that's for sure. I don't know what the other teams look like, but you have top ranked players at every position. I would feel good about that team if I were you. You even have the requisite "top rb's" that so many people love to have.

I've been doing this for a few years and one thing I've learned is that I never make fun of someone's team. This is a lot more luck than people like to admit, and if you get Ari to play well and your team stays healthy you can win your league.

I don't do the defensive side of the ball so I'll let someone else do that.

    Good luck!

  9. They took Riemersma too. Who cares? Euhus blows and will never live up to what Donahoe and company expected of him.

The interesting thing though is what if this is an f you to Mularkey and Donahoe, by trying to get Euhus to have more success in Pittsburgh than he had in Buffalo?

    755990

Jerame Tuman has a hammy and they need someone with a little experience to fill in so they upgraded and got rid of one of their undrafted te's. I don't think it's the "As the Football Gm's Turn" soap opera at work.

Donahoe/Mularkey and the Steelers have/had the same taste in TE's so it's worth a shot for the Steelers.

People around here were talking about Nance pre-draft because of his time spent catching balls from Big Ben, but nothing happened and I never heard anything after that, including the last couple of days. The Steelers have plenty of 3-4-5 wr talent, I don't think Nance helps them at this point.

  10. There is also a reason why we signed him.  In any event, at this point he would be lucky to make it on to the practice squad.

The starters will likely be Evans and Reed or Evans and Price.  All three when we go with 3 wideouts and when we go with four, it will be Roscoe as the fourth.  What we are really talking about here is the 5th WR.  I like Wilson at this point but in the end, it will be Aiken.  Hopefully, they keep 6 and the 6th is Wilson.

    753780

Just a note, in past years I noticed that the St Louis wr's did not substitute that way. There was a number 3 guy (K Curtis) who played in the 3 and 5 wr sets. There were two guys who played in the 4 and 5 wr sets (mcdonald, looker). I assume it was to keep them as fresh as possible during the game. Depending on how Fairchild plays it and whether he thinks he has the talent, you may see the same and hopefully less of J Reed if Parrish can move him to the number four role.

One other thing about the Rams wr's, you didn't see a Nance body type. They were all small and fast. One other reason for no PS for him.

  11. Simple. Each team gets a payroll (ours is $200) with which to "buy" a team.

The first owner up throws a player out onto the auction block with an opening bid (i.e. - Willis McGahee - $5) and the player is auctioned off to the highest bidder (just like a regular auction - the bids increase until the point where only 1 person is left bidding). The next owner then throws out another name, and evetually everyone builds their squad with players they have successfully bid on.

    Advantages:

-Draft order is not important. The only thing you get to do when it's your turn is throw a name out for auction. You can bid on any player up for bid.

-You have a shot at any player in the league. Want Ladanian? He's yours if you are willing to bid high enough (by contrast, if you draft #5 in a normal draft you will NEVER get LT).

-There's a strategy to drafting - you can actually throw out the names of players you DON'T want when it's your turn and watch other owners burn through their payrolls, allowing you to get players at bargain prices later on (I play with a bunch of Pats fans and I love throwing Tom Brady on the block and watching everyone overpay for him).

-It rewards skill rather than luck of the draw when they set the draft order. If you're crafty you can really end up with a good team. You have to think on your feet - anyone who shows up with a fantasy football magazine draft cheat sheet is going to get pounded (as they should).

I'd recommend this style only to leagues where players are very experienced - my league's been going for about 12 years.  Also, there's almost no way to do a draft online like this - you have to be together or on a conference call (8 of us get together, another 2 on the West Coast join by phone).

We love the auction draft - we'll never go back. It makes the draft so much more fun.

    735519

What is your roster layout and how long does that take? Sounds like it could go for a long time.

  12. Here's my situation. I'm picking 10th in a 10 team league. Standard scoring. Snaking draft. (10 & 11....30, 31 and so on) I typically like to load up on RBs but knowing the big 3 plus James and Barber off the board, I'll have my choice of some pretty darn good WRs. Do I go 2 stud WR and come around with the likes of Westbrook and D. Davis in rounds 3 and 4, or do I take 2 from Jackson, Jordan, Brown, Cadillac and perhaps Ward, D. Jackson at WR in 3 and 4?

    thoughts??

    728472

Going into your draft, don't make the standard listing of players into tiers. Instead, decide which players you consider good enough to be your number one starter at each position, then two, three etc. So depending who's available at the bottom of the first you go from there. If there are two rb's that you feel are number one's (say S Jackson and Cadillac) then you should take them. If none or one are available, you can take the top rb and the top wr or qb if you want. This type of setup really helps in the later rounds when you are looking for those players with some potential that could have slipped down in the draft.

In a 10 team league, I'd think that you'd want to get at least one rb in the 1-2 round.

  13. Well I know now I won't take Larry if I get the 1st pick, because Roaf has called it quits.  Alexander is now #1 in the draft.

    731231

Never say never, there is a lot of the preseason left. Although I do agree that Alexander is the safe number one at this point, with LT next and LJ third. I don't like the coaching changes for LJ, but I'll be watching to see if the Chiefs first team O can put together some decent drives this preseason. Seems like Herm will plod down the field instead of going for the big strike, and I think that will be the biggest adjustment for the players.

  14. So what's the big difference? Coaching?  TD couldn't find one to save himself.  An executive who can't hire decent subordinates is doomed to failure, no matter the skills he might otherwise possess.

    711452

How about cap space? Money is really the one factor that isn't visible from the outside. Like when people say TD didn't want to sign players that were good. Maybe he was told he couldn't. maybe RW was tired of shelling out Polian/Bulter money. I don't think TD did a great job, as his record suggests, but I think the team is in a lot better shape than it was in 2001. The defense has some hope to be solid and I have to think that the offense will be better also. I hope that Jaron and Fairchild will work well together and Fairchild quickly realizes he ain't in no dome no mo'/

  15. I'll say it again. the workouts are Voluntary.

If your boss told you that tomorrow and friday were VOLUNTARY days of work, how many of you would show up? Exactly.

    697116

Do you get a certain number of sick days in your line of work? Do you take all of them? I don't. There's a feeling of obligation that if I can work I will. So yes, I have the opportunity to take advantage of the system but I don't. I think most people have that mindset. If they didn't nothing would ever get done. If you want to skip work all the time, you're not doing something you enjoy. Sucks for you.

There are certain qualities I would like in team leaders. One is presence. It really helps if you're trying to build a championship team. There is a new offensive scheme, a new coaching staff and no "starter" at qb. If McGahee would be there as a team leader he just might get his raise. It's already been mentioned here that he's the top playmaker on a poor offense. That makes him the first candidate, but he seems to be turning the opportunity down. From everything I've heard from Marv, I would be shocked if he got an extension. Let the national media yap all they want.

If you don't want to make the commitment then don't expect the cash.

  16. The Bills had one the worst performing 2nd year coaching staffs in history.  Mularkey made Williams look like a friggin genius.

    679065

Amen. When Mularkey was announced as the next coach, I shook my head. At the time, people in Pittsburgh were ready to run him out of town anyway. Last season he showed you why - ineffective, ineffective ineffective. The best example was the Houston game. 5 field goals against a bad team with a short field provided by the defense. JP's best plays were with his feet. He couldn't get the team moving, even with the incredibly short fields the defense was able to give him. So they give Houston a chance by not converting for touchdown's.

You will see how much potential JP has this year because a new regime is not afraid of dumping former high drafts picks they had nothing to do with. I don't think they have a replacement for his roster spot this year but he could be dumped next post season if the effort isn't there or he doesn't progress enough. I think Holcombe may start the season especially if the oline isn't solid. JP or Nall may come in a few games into the season if Holcombe isn't winning.

One thing about the Stewart-O'Donnell thing and Donahoe's involvement from a couple of posts ago. The Steelers as an organization don't pay too much for their players and they were not going to match the contract the Jets gave him. There was no desire to keep him at that price, although if I remember correctly they did put a prety good offer out there for him. Donahoe also had trouble picking olineman - he brought Kris Farris with him to Buffalo - just one of his quality picks. I think that's really what's killing this team now.
