  1. Why should it be a sham?  Why not call him the OC/AHC?  Have they already hired an OC (I don't see one on their website).  And Sherman still hasn't accepted it.

Coaching titles are being used and abused tremendously this year to lock up assistants so they can't jump to other teams.

Troy Calhoun is the Texans' official OC, but there's no way he keeps those responsibilities if Sherman comes on board. McNair seems to be a bit squmish about handing the OC job to a "no name" guy like Calhoun and would feel more comfortable with a proven commodity like Sherman (as RW apparently did).

It's the same in Denver, where Mike Heimedinger was given the Assistant Head Coach title so the OC title could be given to Rick Dennison--so other teams couldn't hire him away from the Broncos.

Look at Washington, they have Associate and Assistant HC's plus an OC and a DC. Then there's the Fins' hiring Dom Capers as "special assistant" to Nick Saban. Yeah, right. :D

  2. Maybe Sherman, who couldn't get a job as a HC and will now work for his bud just to keep his feet wet until next year.  But Bates isn't in the picture.  So at best they get 1 good coach to coach the O-line, a postion he never coached in the NFL before.  Sounds good to me! :D

The "O-line" part of Sherman's title is a sham. The "Assistant HC" part isn't, however.

  3. Ken Whisenhunt imo is another Mike Mularkey in the making except instead of having to work with the likes of Kordell Stewart or tommy maddox he has the benefit of a great young quaterback in Ben Roethlisberger.  Whisenhunt like mularkey relies on a  gadget laden offense. The only difference being the steelers have the oline to run that offense which gives them the threat of a run game, and a credible pass offense, which makes the trick plays possible, just like it did for us during the 2nd half of the 2004 season.  Whisenhunt loves the trick plays, and will Mularkey a team maybe the raiders once he becomes a head coach.  Without a good enough oline. That offense just doesn't fly.

It's all about execution and players. PGH has both, BUF had neither.

  4. It is obvious, the man is about money.

He's no fool. Sombody will get fired halfway through the season and he'll be a hot commodity again.

It's obvious he's not interested in Buffalo and thinks he can eventually land a job in a higher profile market (maybe he hated Green Bay and doesn't want to live in the second smallest NFL market for the next 3-4 years).

He's probably not taking much of a risk, especially if the "kiddie corps" hires that have gone down this year blow up on a few teams.

  5. It aint over till it's over.

Ralph may up the ante or something since the search is dragging on.

I expect him to sign with Houston eventually, especially if Sherman accepts the Texans' offer to be their OC.

Houston has a better upside for burnishing Bate's future HC chances, and a more limited downside than taking the Bills job (if Houston continues to suck, he can blame it on the personnel). He's probably using the Bills offer as leverage to get more $$$ out of McNair, too.

  6. He was consistently 5-10 yards downfield on run plays, moreso than any other lineman.  He was looing for a second player to distroy after busting through the D-Line.

That'd be nice if if his RB wasn't getting tackled behind him for a 1-2 yard gains.

I agree that Peters' pass blocking was way ahead of his run blocking last year. I blame a lot of that on not being in an O-lineman strength and weight training program last offseason when he was still listed as a TE. It will be interesting to see what kind of shape he shows up in at training camp and whether the new coaching staff is committed to making him a full-time OT this off-season.

  7. IMO, it has more to do with what jobs were available than anything else. Gray took the DB coaching job because there were no DC jobs left. If he'd spent more time looking for a DC position, rather than a HC job, he might have landed another coordinator position a few weeks ago. MM wasn't even looking for another HC job and knew he'd have an easy time getting hired as an OC somewhere.

Its the same thing with Hazlett, Martz and Sherman. They'll settle for coordinators jobs until the next coaching carousel begins and hope they get another shot at the top job.

  8. Hey, it wasn't just TD's watch that had this problem. It's the nature of the draft that we remember the diamonds (few) and forget the turds (many):

  9. Excellent point.  Snyder will throw a truckload of amortorized bonus cash at Clements.  Nate's a very good CB.  He's never been a 'shutdown' CB, he sometimes requires saftey help.  He's strong in run defense, but we let Winfield go, and he was stronger.  Unless he wants to stay and play for Jauron, he'll be back with Gray and Williams in DC.

It'll have to be a really creative contract offer, since Washington is projected to be $20 million over the 2006 salary cap.

  10. Tidbit on Bates from Florio's site:

    McNAIR NOT ENAMORED WITH STAFF

A league source tells us that Texans owner Bob McNair isn't thrilled with the assistant coaches hired to date by Gary Kubiak, and that McNair is pushing for a "big name" to run the team's defense.

The problem is that one of the biggest names out there -- former Packers defensive coordinator Jim Bates -- would not be inclined to keep defensive backs coach Jon Hoke, whom McNair personally likes.

No effort has been made to contact the Dolphins for permission to interview co-defensive coordinator Richard Smith, apparently due to McNair's desire to install a heavy hitter. But beyond Bates and former Vikings defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, there aren't many big names available on that side of the ball.

Kubiak meanwhile is trying to lure a guy with head coaching experience to his offensive staff. Kubiak interviewed former Packers head coach Mike Sherman on Friday for the position of offensive line coach and assistant head coach.

  11. Locke changes the circumstances by changing the lock on the arsenal, giving him a lot of power, and it looks like it's all building toward that "Locke problem" Jack predicted.

    586806[/snapback]

I think Locke will ultimately do anything he can to stay on the island ("it's my destiny") out of fear he might loose the ability to walk and have a sense of control over how he lives his life. Given all the religious references in the show, I'm wondering if he might go "Judas" on them at some point, if it looks like they might find a way off the island.
