1. Playing at home - receipient of 5 turnovers and 17 fish penalties and still barely hanging on. Zero sacks compared to the jail rush that was the dolphins pass rush.  With a 17-0 lead, you would at least expect our sack total to equal fish; but no; completely get our ass kicked on both sides of the ball for the entire second half.  Nice coaching staff, Saban makes his adjustments at half time and Mularkey still unable to make one adjustment all year- zero TDs in the second half all year. Big win - pathetic performance especialy from our bargain basement coaching staff. Did Willis have one hole all day!!!!  Ronnie Brown sure did

    470665

I think your wrong last two plays of the game were sacks. But with all the blitzing never really got close to Gus most of the pressure was standard 4 man rush.

  2. I am very happy the bills won especially against the dreaded dolphins.

However, looking at the big picture, we should have murdered this team. With all of the penalties, turnovers, and miscues by miami, the game should've been over by the start of the 4th quarter.

The jets beat a solid bucs team today and unless we can take advantage of our opponents' mistakes, I dont see this team beating the jets next week.

Other than that GO BILLS and here's to a two game win streak.

    470649

The OL did a better job at pass protecting early on however the play calling still stinks. We constantly run the ball on first and never ran a true play action pass all day. We still havent scored a second half TD and had many chances with the poor play of the felons.

  3. The nightmare scenario for Mularkey is if this KH move doesn't work.  Then he looks like he abandoned a strategy, tried another, and ended up at the starting point.

But I will guarantee this:  let's just say the Bills are able to string together 3 or 4 wins--all this will be forgotten, and all these so-called "fans" will be lauding MM for his insightful coaching.  And instead of damning Losman to Hell, they'll be saying " you know, maybe he does need a little more time to develop."

    Take it to the bank.

    468235

If KH helps us win these games a new controversy at OBD will arise, bank on that. Most people on this board just want something to B word about. I agree with original post; that I will root for whomever is wearing the Bills uniforms each week, I just dont think this is a smart move for development of a young QB, but than what the hell do I know about developing a young QB?

  4. I was talking to a friend of mine who is a Pats fan yesterday, and we were talking bills/pats. So he says to me whos your new QB and I tell him Kelly Holcomb. He says to me....wow, your best QB ever was named Kelly, and so is this guy!  There's no way you could lose!

Never thought of it that way and it struck me funny and I hope it's true lol.

    468042

But Kelly as a first name aint anywhere close to a QB as Kelly with a last name.

  5. Don't be an ass.

Holcomb is a stiff, and always will be. There's no FUTURE in Holcomb, and JP will never develop if he sits.

    466909

JSP I agree Holcomb isnt the answer but not sure JP is going to develop as a QB qith the way this coaching staff is handling him. The game plans for game 1 seemed to try to get him in the flow early. Since than its been try for the damn long ball or trick plays instead of a solid running game with short rollout passes that let JP make the plays. I am just hoping that maybe this is a wakeup call to JP similar to NE game last year but would be damn disaapointed to find out that he needs another wakeup call.

  6. That's the most intelligent decision TD and MM have made this year. JP is not ready to be a starter and though KH struggled in his two relief appearances, I believe he will be a lot more effective now that he has handled the snaps all week.

I keep saying this and I will say it again. JP does not equal Carson, Ben or Eli. The team needs to put the best product on the field to win ball games. The naysayers will say he needs time to develop and let the season wash away. Well my question to you is, what if he doesn't develop? Let's take the "Steve Young" approach and see what happens (granted KH isn't JM).

    466905

I just love how folks feel somehow KH is the answer. This is the same KH who LOST his job in Cleveland and wasnt courted by many and is at best a second tier backup. This just seals it that MM has alot to learn about being a head coach. Looks like this coaching staff is about to ruin a young QBs confidence etc, hope to god this kid can bounce back from this BS at OBD.

  7. The music channels on DTV will be replaced with XM Radio channels starting November 15th.  Apparantly you get 50 channels with the base package, 65 channels with the Total Choice Plus package (it's ~$4/month more).

Apparantly Dish has recently switched to Sirius radio.

    CW

    459092

damn be neat if DTV had Sirius and you could get the NFL radio on DTV so ya could have sunday ticket and radio network all in one package

  8. JP is the started on this team and kelly isnt showing any better capability. There are two fundamental problems on this team one being the Oline that cant seem to pass block like other teams in the league can and a OC who really cant come up with a game plan to use the strength the team has. If anyone is to be fired at OBD its McNally because he doesnt seem to watch film of other teams OL and teach his guys how to block properly. I

  9. The question is do you pay $250 for the year for Sunday Ticket or

Pay $150 for the year for Sirrius Radio....

    458676

How do you get 250$ for Sunday ticket? A new subscriber gets in around 175 I heard. Sirius is a ood option since get local bills radio net and also have access to all the other radio programing thats nice for driving in the car etc

  10. You read that earlier:

    457532

at first I was trying to be funny but thinking about it might get some of that Takeo speed at the OLB position. Right now we are so banged up on defense that we need to find ways to use the personnel we have. Malloy is wearing a cast and his takling was off this week, London is nursing a hammy, spikes is out. This is the core middle of the defense. Wonder if Denny or Kelsay may move to OLB some to get that extra high motor in and going.

  11. Amazingly though, I remember people making the same argument that losing Phat Pat wasn't going to hurt either.

    457600

What amazes me is that so many Bills fans believe Phat Pat is the reason we cant seem to stop the run right now. Put yourself in TD shoes for once and answer me truely that you would have paid this guy the money he wanted for someone beyond peek in his career? I really dont think loosing Pat is what is hurting the run. I think that Gray has taken a more aggressive approach to the play calling trying to force turnovers etc and the resuts are far down from last year. I Think that crazy brit summed it up perfectly that loosing Spikes may actually force others to step it up and grey to go a little more conservative on the run blitzing.

  12. yup, it seemed like every year in the mid to late '90's we'd hafta go to pittsburgh on a monday night and just get crushed..i always hated the NFL for scheduling that...

    457856

We always seemed to have to play monday nights in Miami as well. I had once heard Ralph was against Sunday and Monday night games since it seemed to affect the gates etc, I cant recall a night game at RWS that wasnt a complete sellout.

  13. ONCE UPON A TIME:

September 26, 1994 – The Last Monday Night Game At Rich Stadium

It was a gala weekend  of events as the Buffalo Bills pulled out all the stops to celebrate their 35th anniversary.  Players, both famous and obscure, gathered in town for a week of festivities and memories.

    Ralph Wilson recalled,

“When we started out it was a long shot that the AFL would be successful. I shook hands with Paul Neville (late Buffalo News editor) and promised that I’d stick it out for three years. Beyond that, I didn’t know what was going to happen. I look back at the early ‘60’s when you held your breath before a game, hoping the weather was good because we needed the gate receipts to keep us going. And most of the attendance was on the day of the game. I mean you could never envision it would turn out like this.”

“But it has been a great 35 years of enjoyment for me. I’ve enjoyed the last seven years more than any other time. Part of it’s because we have been successful. But a major part of it is the association with Marv Levy. He’s such a high class fellow.  And he’s surrounded himself with a great bunch of assistants. And we’ve drafted very high caliber players.”

Ralph said he cherished the 1964 & 1965 AFL Championships, the end of the

20-game losing streak to Miami, Bill Simpson’s game saving interception against the NY Jets in 1981, the OT victory against the same Jets in 1988, and then the four Super Bowls.  But his best memory? –  “There have been so many great memories, it’s hard for me to single any one of them out … but if I had to single one out, the Comeback game was it. I just stood there in total disbelief. I said, ‘This cannot happen”’.

The alumni players were introduced to the Rich Stadium crowd prior to the game. The Bills also ran a full page tribute in the Buffalo News naming and thanking the 290 individuals and firms that had been season ticket holders from the very beginning.

And Then – The Game –

It was about 12:13 AM (DST) on a partly cloudy, partly rainy night when a Buffalo crowd of 75,373 entered the NFL nether world called “Elway Time”, could the Bronco’s #7 perform his fourth quarter magic once again?  Trailing the Bills  27-20 with 25 seconds left, the Broncos had a fourth down at the Bills four-yard line.  Elway took the snap and rolled right, looking for either Shannon Sharpe or Anthony Miller but both receivers were covered and as Cornelius Bennett leaped for the kill, John lofted a desperation pass to Cedric Tillman and watched it soar high and away. For one game – John failed.

Denver had started the season as an early favorite to easily make the playoffs, but the team arrived in Buffalo after a poor 0-3 start.  There were whispers about the quarterback’s fading ability and more open comments about Wade Phillips coaching status.

The Buffalo Bills were 2-1, having lost their home season opener to the NY Jets 23-3 before beating the Patriots (38-35) and the Oilers (15-7) on the road.  The Buffalo Bills offense was sputtering a bit and prior to this game, kicker Steve Christie had scored the Bills last 18 points and made it 21 points with a 36-yard field goal in the first quarter of this last, Monday night home game. The Broncos scored next on a 10-play, 72 yard drive finished by an 11-yard TD pass to Anthony Miller.  After a Jeff Burris 65-yard punt return (TD) was called back on holding call, the Bills answered nicely with Thurman scoring twice in a period of 96 seconds – the first score on a 16-yard run. The rushing score was the Bills first in nearly 7 ½ quarters of play.  After the ensuing kickoff, Bruce Smith sacked Elway and forced a fumble which was recovered by Cornelius Bennett (his 15th – a team record). Thomas scored again on a 27-yard run with 8 seconds left in the half and the Bills led 17-7.

Thurman Thomas was going to have his third consecutive 100-yard game (17-103) and both his scores came on the same draw play.  Thurman said,

“It’s a little draw we got from a team I’m not going to name. It’s something we worked on all week because their defensive ends get up the field. I got in the groove and I was hitting the holes correctly. On both touchdowns, Kent Hull said, ‘Just follow me,’ which I did. He got a couple of good blocks.”

On the second score, Thurman got a block from Don Beebe who leveled the cornerback, Thurman leaped over Beebe and receiver Bill Brooks sealed off the safety as Thurman scored down the left side.

Kent Hull said,  “I just pulled around the guard (Lacina). It was similar to what we did against Kansas City in the Championship game last year. Glenn Parker did a good blocking Mecklenburg on the outside and if I can beat my block, Thurman just has to beat the safety and he’s in.”

In the third quarter, Denver received the kickoff but Mickey Washington promptly picked off Elway and returned the ball 27 yards to the Bills 25-yard line.  Carwell Gardner scored his first TD of the year on a three yard plunge while Kenny Davis ran 15 times for 45 yards after Thomas left the game with a sprained knee. The Bills finished with 149 rushing yards – their highest total for the four games of the season. Thurman also became the third Bills player to have 60 TD’s in a career following OJ Simpson and Andre Reed.

Despite an almost seven minute advantage in TOP, Denver could just not get a running game going on the wet field,  the team finishing with only 77 yards of which 37 were by Elway.  Leonard Russell scored on a two yard rush to make the game 24-13. The teams then traded 28-yard field goals and with the Bills ground attack gone anemic without #34, the Broncos drove again in the fourth quarter and managed a 43-yard FG by Jason Elam to make the game 27-20.  The Bills took the ball but soon had to punt – a 33 yard effort by Chris Mohr. Glyn Milburn fielded the ball on the bounce and took off for what seemed a sure TD, but Mohr caught his ankle from behind and the Broncos had the ball on their own 47-yard line. Elway drove the team downfield one last time but the last pass sailed high and away as the Bills sent the Broncos packing with an 0-4  record.

Wade Philips said, afterwards, “They’ve got a good football team and they’re tough to beat here. It’s always been that way. They look like the team they’ve had the last few years … the last four years.”

The victory was the Bills 250th (250-270-8) and  evened their MNF record at 14-14. Jim Kelly passed Joe Ferguson on the all time pass completion list with 2,191-2,188.  Kelly had also passed Ferguson in TD passes in Week 2 with 183.

    457389

I was at that game. Each year I would travel up to WNY for the annual MNF game we would have ( was like 4 years in row ). We would go golfing on saturday, cortland apple picking on sunday , game on monday and head back to NC on tuesday. Man I really miss that trip so now have to travel up for sunday game once a year, just wish NFL went back to starting on labor day weekend that extra day was nice for travel

  14. Talk about night and day. The Fox broadcast was crystal clear and bright, while the CBS game was downright blurry and hard to see.

I don't have a HD reciever as of yet, but because it was broadcast (?) in HD, did that make the difference?

Does CBS not have that technology or something??

    457164

I havent yet seen a Fox broadcast that wasnt HD but did pop over to it during game and much better than the fuzzy pics I have on CBS. I figured the fuzzy pic was just fact I have a HD receiver and HD TV and damn pic was just standard def. When I went to split screen and changed input to standard versus HD pic was a little clearer. One thing about CBS HD is that its 1080i I noticed MNF is only 720p, didnt check what Fox was last weekend

  15. I'm well aware of the shortcomings of our OL concerning pass blocking. Yet they do open holes for the running game.

So if your RB shows he can get 100 + yards if you give him the rock enough, should the Coaches keep asking the young, inexperienced QB to throw passes downfield, which have little chance of being completed ?  How many offensive plays are we literally wasting each game ? 10 ? 15 ?

The playcalling is very unrealistic after 3 games. You play to the strength of your roster, not play Madden 2006 with players who don't have the ability to beat certain defensive packages.

Right now, we have a first year QB who is fighting himself. He's not throwing the ball at all. He's trying to aim it/guide it to his receivers and not coming close on many plays. Many times, he has little time to throw.

Run the ball. What is so galling to Mularkey/Clements that they can't accept this ? Quit trying to squeeze the square peg into the round hole and let your young QB take some baby steps before asking too much of him. Run the ball and rediscover the TE for short passes. Go downfield a couple times a game. Let the confidence of the kid grow slowly. Right now, he plays as if HE needs to do it all. He doesn't and that reflects squarely on the coaching staff.

    457417

Mark, I agree and actually posted this same topic. The play calling in week one seemed focused on getting JP into flow early etc. Yes running the ball is important but need to keep 8 - 9 out of the box as TB had done to us. We need to start getting JP comfortable early each game with quick hits to wideouts, slants and a few draw plays. Major issue right now is OL cant give him enough time to even make first look.

Hopefully MM and TC spend some time this week coming up with ways to utilize players
