  1. Hamas and Hezbollah are interesting cases, because while they started out as simply terrorist organizations, they've transformed themselves. Bloom's book, which is somewhat of an extension of Pape's book, argues that one of the uses of suicide terrorism is to compete for popularity and gain standing within the community. Hamas and Hezbollah have gone beyond that and transformed themselves into not just terrorist organizations, but also political parties, providing lots of social welfare program to increase their standing. Both organizations tend to use religion as a tool to motivate the people that they need to use (for attacks or other reasons), but many aren't overly religious.
  2. lol, read em. One of the authors (Ami Pedazhur) was one of my profs at UT. Some interesting stuff if you are into the topic.

  5. lol, I more or less was hoping to point out that Ced just might in fact be innocent this time.
  6. Adjusted gross income
  7. I know there are plenty of good cops out there, and that not all cops are like this. I also appreciate the work that cops do. This is why I tended to say that APD was a mismanaged police department, as they keep having scandals over and over. I limited it to APD because I know there are plenty of good police departments out there.
  8. Yes, because rushing statistics are a perfect way to judge the RB position.
  9. I think that this article is proof as to why mentally challenged people shouldn't be invited to write news articles.
  10. Got to love ideas that actually make driving more dangerous, for the purpose of increasing revenue. Installing cameras at intersections and then lowering the yellow light time, for example.
  11. Seeing as how we aren't going to ever agree on the basics, whats the point?
  12. That is an amusing statement. Following the laws and principles of the country.
  13. Because if you keep using that same option, then nothing has changed.
  14. Both of these arguments ignore that its a multitude of things that add up to America's problems, and that they all need to be corrected for this to stop, including the way America is viewed and what influences that. This is something that will take multiple generations to correct.
  15. Camera Vans make me oh so warm and tingly inside. Plus, it is pretty important that they protect the workers 4 hours before they show up - its pretty easy to run them over while they're still in bed.
  16. Its pretty cool though, with that argument you can negate basically anything that has happened in the past 6 years. "Pfft, there were terrorists before we did ____, must not have had any effect." Reminds me of the "terrorists are irrational" argument. Anything that happens you can explain away simply by saying "terrorists are irrational."

  18. Oh yeah, reinforcing America's hypocritical image is a good thing in fighting this.
  19. I'm sure John McCain is reading this thread as we speak.
  20. As if this is comparable. The old terrorists aren't rational defense, I love it.
  21. Another massively broken, pander to Iowa farm bill has passed Congress. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/09/washingt...arm.html?ref=us Great, just what we need, more farmers producing sugar to get a government payment, and then mixing it into a biofuel that is inefficient and doesn't work very well. Of course, this farm bill still helps out the big guys: Sigh, enjoy another 5 years of non-market set food prices, cheap sugar and corn, cheap junkfood, and an increasingly unhealthy America.
  22. And it doesn't matter what the hell we think of it, or how the hell we perceive it. What matters is the way the world and the enemy perceives it.
  23. I thought he said both, but I could be remembering it wrong.
