“I think it went well,” Gray said of the interview. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to be brought in and given the chance to get in front of Mr. McNair, Charley and those guys and let them know my story.”

    ****

This year the defense was plagued with injuries, particularly the loss of linebacker Takeo Spikes in Week 3, and struggled through the second half of the season. With a first-year starter under center, the Bills were unable to materialize their 9-7 finish in 2004 into a playoff bid; they finished with a disappointing 5-11 record.

The Bills’ released many coaches on the staff, but Gray’s position on the team remains unclear. He’ll meet with head coach Mike Mularkey next week and see what adjustments will be made.

  3. What about Jon Runyan? Its not a lock that Philly wants to resign him, but I suppose he'd be pretty expensive.

"He's done a nice job with the young kids," Reid said. "They all look up to him, respect him. He's always done what he needs to do. He's a good example."

The 32-year-old Runyan will be a free agent at the end of the year and might not fit in Philadelphia's plans _ like most of the high-priced veterans the Eagles have cut loose the last few years. Reid said Friday he'd like to have Runyan back _ What else is he going to say? _ and the 10-year vet wants to keep playing. After all, there are more games to be played.

"Four more years to get to 200," Runyan said, laughing. "If the body allows it, why not? If I still feel like this at the end of the next four years, you keep on going."

  4. In the staff shakeup that Bills coach Mike Mularkey has already begun, it appears there is a good chance April will add the title of assistant head coach to his business card.

Cool. The Bills are breaking ground on another taboo!

  5. I don't think the teams back then were necessarily more talented than the current bills, just less dysfunctional, and they played better as a team.

    557445

Gotta disagree. The pre-SB teams were a lot more talented.

And the bickering part was way overblown, IMO. Thuman got credit for starting a lot of it by his comment on "the QB," but I don't think any of that stuff ever affected how he, Kelly or any of the other guys played on the field together.

  6. He just made some mistakes on the...heart or the intangibles on the players.

    557269

Well, at least we agree on something! :w00t:

The FA signings are a bit different, since these guys were already established players, IMO. I doubt TD would have been scouting at John Carol for a player like LF.

And the players you cited were all taken in rounds 1-3 with the exception of McGee. That's not "hidden gem" country....

  7. No what I have said he that he has shown well in the passing game, and getting a body on rushers, where his foot speed helps.  However he is terrible in my opinion in the run game, and has no push and his not suited for that reason on the rightside.

    557263

That's my opinion of his play as well. Maybe a full off-season of weight training would help with the push, however...

And I would like to see Anderson out of here...he can't move worth a damn.

  8. Sorry, TD was in the NFL and directly evaluating players in the NFL longer than Marv has been.

    557229

As a coach, ML evaluated players every day. He did it on the field, not by reading a scouting report. That's 40 years of experience at all levels of competition.

And there seems to be zero evidence of TD relying on measurables. He's chosen big guys, small guys, players without measurables and players with, old guys, young guys, healthy guys, injured guys. That is totally baseless criticism.

    557229

He's chosen guys with measurables (speed, size, college rep, and even "buzz" like WM), but not intangibles like character and will to win. And where were the small school gems the Bills used to find? TD liked guys from big name college programs and didn't seem interested in looking too far below that level for the London Fletcher-type of guys who live to play NFL football.

IMO, TD was a draft wonk, not unlike Mel Kiper...he could paint you a pretty picture of a guy based on a scouting report, but he never could get to the heart of what makes one player a winner over another (hint: it's more than size and speed). Polian can spot that quality (as well as Belichick)...I tend to think ML will be better than average at it as well.

  9. Frankly, I see Marv as extremely sharp for an 80 year old and not quite so sharp for an NFL GM.

    557154

Based on the performance of 80% of the other GMs in the league today, how sharp would you say they are? (and no, I'm not just thinking of Matt Millen!).

I am not sure, however, how a GM out of the league for eight years and never handling this job is going to decide on whether or not to sign Chris DeMulling or Marco Rivera or Bennie Anderson or Floyd Womack if he doesn't want to deal with the salary cap

    557154

The same way you always have...look at film, interview the player intensely to get a feel for how they're wired, and then talk to all your contacts around the league to get other opinions.

The more I think about it, I believe ML's coaching experience will help him a great deal in evaluating players. He knows what game day temperament is all about and won't just focus on the measurables, which seems to have been TDs emphasis having never played or coached the game.

  10. RW just want's to be informed of what's happening, IMO, rather than reading about it in the newspaper. I believe Ralph truly loves the game and his team, and hated being treated like a passive investor by TD.

Marv will keep him in the loop and make him feel like he's important, which it sounds like TD never did. RW can also be more involved on the business side, where Marv says he's not concentrating.

  11. The Bills pickings will be limited because it's painfully obvious that Mularkey almost got canned and is on thin ice.  Not exactly a good situation for an assistant to come into.

    556694

How many HC's have been fired in the past week? This has to be one of the biggest years in recent memory for coaching staff turnover. A lot of guys will be scrambling for a job before the music stops, so if the Bills can act quickly, they should be able to land some decent coaches.
