1. Let's take a look at that 2000 draft class:

    1. Erik Flowers

    2. Tavares Tillman

    3. Corey Moore

    4. Avion Black

    5. Sammy Morris (the only quality pick of the litter and a special teamer/back up at best)

    6. Leif Larsen

    7a. Drew Haddad

    7b. DaShon Polk

Ooh-fah! Makes the 2002 class look like an A by comparison!

    214400

Actually I think Sammy Morris was a pretty good pick as a fifth-rounder and we got some decent mileage out of Polk IMO.

The rest though - I still remember those days of waiting for Leif Larsen to develop into a football player.

  2. How can you go to Soundgarden and not mention "Gun", "Nazi Driver", "Head Injury" or "Slaves & Bulldozers"??

And on the same topic, how about "Into The Void", either Sab's original,  Soundgarden's cover, or Sepultura's cover?

Speaking of Sepultura, how about "The Hunt" or "Roots Bloody Roots"?

    214005

Soundgarden's probably my favorite band, so I'm always stoked to see them discussed.

My favorite song of theirs, which of course never gets airplay, is Mind Riot.

And speaking of Sabbath, how about Supernaut? Just discovered this one recently...

  3. Not that I'm a fan of Moss' attitude, really...but to be fair, he was out there against Green Bay on an ankle that would have sidelined most.  And even gimpy, he schooled Al Harris.  Of course, everyone forgets that because he overshadowed his own performance by wiping his ass on the goal post...

Point being, though, that as much of a punk that Moss is, it's not entirely fair to characterize him as completely selfish.  And when he is selfish, it's not entirely fair to place all the blame on him for it, not when the coaches come up with stupid crap like the "Randy Ratio"...

    214292

I do give him credit for playing injured a lot of the season. The problem is, every time he puts out that kind of effort, he turns around and acts like a jackass (the display in Green Bay, leaving the field against the Redskins with a playoff spot on the line - this is the unforgivable one I think).

  4. You bring up a good point. Some of this is driven by what you think makes up 'the greatest receiver of all time.' If you're going to base it on catches, yards, etc. over the course of the career, that's one thing. I think you have to put in attitude, approach, commitment, preparation. When you do that, Moss falls off the map to never be seen except for some whisp of his ugly looking Buckwheat hairdo...

    214247

Greatest receiver of all time definitely has to take all those things into account, and that is why you're absolutely right that Moss is not and likely never will be near Rice's level.

In big games, when the game is on the line, Rice in his prime would be out there, making the plays, whereas Moss will be there if he feels like it.

  5. Moss can't carry Rice's fast-actin' Tinactin, let alone be referred to as the best receiver of all time. That's like saying you think it's close between Walter Payton and Ricky Williams as to who is the best running back of all time.

Nothing personal. But there is nothing about Moss that indicates he's even in the same stratosphere as Rice, when you stop to consider careers, impact, preparation and attitude.

    214220

Moss had the potential to be as good as Jerry Rice (from a talent standpoint) and has put up some good seasons. But you're right, they're nowhere near the same level. If Moss could somehow radically change his personality and attitude, then maybe.

  6. wanna see something funny?

    april 17, 2000

    peter king's draft grade -- B plus (5th best)

"Buffalo. Pick 89 overall, Corey Moore, will be one of those classic Bills picks (they always get a very good player after the first round, every year), the kind of player GMs will regret passing on. "

    214160

I'd mock King, but I still remember my optimism about the players in that draft. Still is funny to read.

  7. I agree they might give Reed another year, but until Reed or someone else from that draft steps up, you have to say it was TD's worst draft in Buffalo so far.

    214111

I don't think that can be argued (depending on how Losman turns out I guess). Still not as bad as the 2000 draft though.

  8. When I read Lawyer's comments, I concluded he was rooting FOR the Steelers and against the Pats.

He says that the Steelers "didn't impress" him. He knows that comment is going on the Steelers' locker room wall this week as motivation against the Patriots.

He said that the Patriots are underpaid, and that they should be thinking about taking care of their families. Maybe he's hoping that comment will cause some of the Patriots' players to start demanding more cash in contract negotiations, thereby hurting that franchise.

Or maybe he's not as calculating as I'm giving him credit for.

    214100

That's a pretty elaborate conspiracy theory! I like it.

If Milloy isn't thinking that way, he should start.

  9. i think the point is he wasn't a lower pick.......i don't know about you, but i really don't want to invest 2nd round picks in backup DE's who are good against the run and can't pass rush.......to me, that is a waste.........do you think that is good value?

    214120

I think trading up for him was a mistake, but not all of your decisions are going to be winners. As long as TD doesn't make a habit of it, the occasional misjudgment is just part of the job.

And as long as Denney remains a steady if unspectacular performer, I don't think the pick was terrible. A late second-round pick is getting into the area, I think, where you should be reasonably happy if you get solid play out of your pick. It's legitimate to expect star play from a first-rounder or early second-rounder. After that point a lot of players are doing well if they put together a four or five year career.

  10. Hey, tell TD.  If Denney is such a find in the second round, why is he not starting

and why did TD draft ANOTHER LDE in a subsequent draft?

    Just the facts.

    214029

By the way, here's what Darin said in the message you were responding to:

"Denney isn't a great 2nd round pick by any stretch but he's hardly the bust or terrible player that so many make him out to be." Yeah, don't know why I would question your reading at all.

  11. Yes I am.

The Alaska responder is implying I don't know what I am talking about

because I don't know the scheme or a player responsibility.

Does Denney?  Rush the passer?  Try him at TE to try and get something

    out of him.

I know that Denney is a 2nd round pick that isn't starting and TD

drafted another LDE to replace him.

    214045

Got it. So the DEs responsibility is to rush the passer. Don't worry about that RB running by you.

  12. Sounds like we have some Denney fans on board!

    213950

I wouldn't call myself a Denney "fan". I'm not going to run out and get a jersey.

But considering some of the players we've seen roll through town and back out again taken at the same point in the draft or earlier, he's not that bad a player. Knowing what we do now about his play, would I trade up to get him and spend a second round pick? No I wouldn't.

But I would also say that a team can get a fair amount of use out of a guy like Ryan Denney. He's not a star, but he does his job competently. My only point is I don't understand the bashing he takes around here.

  13. Ryan Denney played well this season.  But rant on.

    213934

Yeah, I don't understand the fixation people have on ripping on Denney. I think it's pretty clear what kind of player he is: not a star, but a solid player against the run who can occasionally apply some pressure. Not every second-round pick is going to be a star, and compared to some I've seen in the past, this one looks pretty good.

  14. If the staff thinks he has a shot at actually getting his head in the game and producing, I'd lean toward keeping him for one more year. I doubt we're paying him all that much, and I don't think there are a ton of great receivers out there waiting to be brought in as our #3 (or 4 if Aiken steps up).

It doesn't look good for him developing into a good player, but stranger things have happened.

  15. I think there's a strong case to be made for the Patriots just because Belichick is a much better coach than Cowher.

What I don't get is the certainty so many seem to have that the Pats will win (or in a few cases, the certainty that they will lose). I think it's a tossup. I think the coaching edge for the Pats is offset by the strength of the Steelers' offensive line and defense. The injuries on the Patriots' defense have to catch up to them sometime too, don't they? Otherwise what are they paying those salaries for?

I expect this will be a very close game - maybe a field goal winning it in the final minute or OT. Advantage Pats in that situation, but you never know.
