  1. QB's that were not successful for close to 3-5 years and were traded and became superstars. Lets name some of the more productive ones:

Steve Young: (played 2 years with Tampa and could barely make the field, and 4 years with SF before he did as well)

    7 Pro Bowls

    3x All Pro Team

    3x SB Champ

    2x SB MVP

    2x NFL MVP

    AP player of the year

2x Offensive player of the year

    Highest QB rating

Record for most TD's in a Super Bowl

    Hall of Fame Inductee

Drew Brees: (played first 3 years in San Diego with a 10-17 record as starter only broke 3,000 yards once in that time)

NFL Comback Player of the year (2004)

    4 Pro Bowls

    3x All Pro Team

Walter Payton Man of the year

3x NFC Offensive Player of the year

NFL Offensive Player of the year

    Super Bowl Champ

    Super Bowl MVP

    Career QB Rating of 91.9

Kurt Warner: (couldnt even get on the field until an injury took Trent Green out for the season)

    4 Pro Bowls

    2x NFL MVP

    3x All Pro Team

    Super Bowl MVP

    Super Bowl Champ

Walter Payton Man of the year

Bart Starr Man of the year

    2 Different teams with 100+ TD's

Most passing yards in a single playoff campaign

    Career QB Rating of 93.7

Oh yeah, he also had a stint in his career where he went 6 seasons with the Rams, Giants and Cards with a winning record of 13 and 29.

Theres 3 (Most Likely) Hall of Fame QB's that I just rattled off for you to ponder. Stats and awards were viewed on Pro-Football-Reference.com and Wikipedia. You and I both know there are plente of QB's in this league that dont get a real shot until they are 3+ years in this league. Not everyone starts out like Tom Brady, Payton Manning, Ben Rothlisberger. More start out like Aaron Rodgers where they cant make the field for 2 years.

We need a new QB. We both agree on that. I personally dont think there is any talent at QB in this draft that will become anything spectacular. But that is all up in the air and nobody will know that for sure for about 3-5 years anyway. But Campbell would be an upgrade over what we have.

Jason Campbell: (after 52 Games starting)

    20 and 32

    10,860 yards

    55TD's

    38INT's

    Sacked 109 Times

    82.3 Rating

And he has finished the last 2 years starting in every game

2 seasons with over 3,000 yards

    Trent Edwards: (after 32 Starts)

    13 and 16

    5,498 yards

    24TD's

    25INT's

    Sacked 58 Times

    77.9 Rating

Has not completed a full season of football since he was a Junior in High School

0 seasons with over 3,000 yards

I personally dont think Campbell is the future of this organization. Maybe you were under the impression that was my intentions. He is a better QB then what we have had. We are in complete rebuilding mode and if there are no QB's available to us via FA or the draft we have to wait until one comes along. He is simply a stop-gap until that happens. We cannot expect any QB on this roster to start this season. It would be complete coaching suicide. There will be a new starter at the QB position in 2010. Would you rather it be Trent?

Well stated. Campbell is not the QB of the future, but he is without a doubt an upgrade over what we have now. Furthermore, for all of those clamoring for Tyler Thigpen, Campbell is pretty similar. If Gailey can make Thigpen look good, then he can probably make Campbell look good. With an inept coaching staff and meddlesome owner in DC, it would be tough for any young QB to succeed. I think he has more talent hands down than Edwards or Fitz, and could thrive with the right coaching. If we can get him cheap enough, I say get him!

  2. This needed SERIOUS fixing. There are PLENTY more QBs available who are restricted but could be had cheap especially if their teams go in another direction. This doesn't even include straight up trades for guys like Mike Vick.

Kyle Orton, Denver Broncos (27) – Restricted FA (UFA-CBA)

Jason Campbell, Washington Redskins (28) – Restricted FA (UFA-CBA)

Matt Moore, Carolina Panthers (26) – Restricted FA

Tarvaris Jackson, Minnesota Vikings (27) – Restricted FA (UFA-CBA)

Kellen Clemens, New York Jets (27) – Restricted FA (UFA-CBA)

Troy Smith, Baltimore Ravens (26) – Restricted FA

True, but if you read the original post, this deals with UFAs. Still pretty slim pickings...

  3. You don't think they will target Chris Chambers...or you just left him out because you don't want them to go after him?

I think out of all of those, besides Walter, Chambers is the guy I would want most. I would also really like to keep T.O. for another year, but I doubt that will happen.

He does have a connection with Buddy, so who knows.

    http://forums.twobillsdrive.com/index.php?...=chris+chambers

Chambers sure sounds like a fit, for relatively cheap! :P

Oops, actually that was just an oversight. Definitely add Chambers to the list.

  4. But that is just it. Who gives a crap what fans might think, Buddy Nix is highly respected in NFL circles as a talent evaluator. For our sake I hope that it was Nix that was quoted becasue it makes perfect sense.

Yep, I agree. I think it could very well be Nix. Just because nobody on this board had heard of him before doesn't mean he isn't a good talent evaluator. Everyone who is saying "it couldn't be him" needs to start losing the negative attitude. The fact is, Nix drafted a LOT of talent in San Diego, and I think he's going to do the same thing here, starting with this year.

  5. It's a new day in the decision making department remember. Guy is gone, so maybe now somebody will have a different view of what jones can bring.

This draft is really deep on Dlineman, I dont think this team will throw 10mil at wilfork or hampton, both look like they may get franchised, so we will probably see 2 guys taken in the draft, I like thomas and williams.

Exactly. Just because the last front office didn't act on Jones doesn't mean this one won't. I also see us taking one of the less expensive NTs available, rather than trying to spend a ton of money on Wilfork or Hampton. I think Hollis Thomas would be a great pickup at NT if we can get him.

  6. The UFA list has been released (http://nfllabor.com). Here is a list of players the Bills could potentially target at areas of need. A list of comments is at the end.

    NT

    Hollis Thomas (Car)

    Ryan Pickett (GB)

    Jason Ferguson (Mia)

    Jimmy Kennedy (Min)

    Vince Wilfork (NE)

    Fred Robbins (NYG)

    Casey Hampton (Pit)

    Aubrayo Franklin (SF)

    QB

    Dante Culpepper (Det)

    Chad Pennington (Mia)

    David Carr (NYG)

    OT

    Chad Clifton (GB)

    Artis Hicks (Min)

    Jon Runyan (SD)

    Barry Sims (SF)

    Levi Jones (WAS)

    WR

    Derrick Mason (Bal)

    Terrell Owens (Buf)

    Josh Reed (Buf)

    Kevin Walter (Hou)

    Chris Chambers (KC)

    Antonio Bryant (TB)

    TE

    Will Heller (DET)

    Ben Watson (NE)

    Randy McMichael (STL)

    Alge Crumpler (TEN)

    Comments:

-- Players are listed in no particular order

-- Lots of candidates at NT. Wilfork and Hampton probably won't be available when signing begins. Thomas and Pickett would be great space eaters. Kennedy had 3 sacks in limited playing time.

-- Slim pickings at the QB position

-- Not a lot of candidates at OT. Clifton could be a great fit. Do Runyan or Sims have any gas left in the tank? Not sure how Jones looked this past season.

-- Mason may retire, but would be a great pickup. Walter could be a nice replacement for Reed, who I don't think the Bills should re-sign. Do we bring back T.O.? (Edit: Forgot to add Chris Chambers. He would be an excellent addition)

-- TE isn't as much of a need as some other areas, but there's not much good depth there at present. The listed UFAs could be better options than anyone other than Nelson. Watson would be a nice pickup.

  7. Whether or not Bell can be a good OLT or ORT is irrelevant. We do not have enough talented OTs on this roster. If Bell can beat out Rookie, Meredith, FA and whomever else they have....then he's good enough. You can't just hand it to him like they did in '09 though. That was the cruelest joke of '09.

With Butler retiring, they'll keep him for sure now.. he may end up being our RT if they draft someone to play LT.

  8. Wendling really surprised me and Fine was a surprise too.

I don't know this so don't think too much about it but it's possible some of them may not have had the on field or off field attitude Chan expects.

Wendling surprised me a bit. Fine, not so much. He's too small to be a really effective blocking tight end, has average speed at best and just gets hurt too much! I thought Palmer showed a bit of upside, but he's considered by most to be too small for a 3-4 LB.

  9. Pre combine and all star games these two "experts" didn't think highly of Philip Rivers in the '04 NFL draft. That's why I am so high on Lefevour.

    http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geut2V.HVLVQYA...l/story/6344096

The same Rivers who Buddy Nix drafted in San Diego. I have complete confidence in our new front office and coaching staff. We're going to get a QB, and he's going to be a good one. But I don't think it will be LeFevour. I don't think he's good enough to be an NFL starter. Think Kyle Boller.

  10. Did he actually say we should trade our first rounder for McNabb?

Is this guy out of his mind?

I read that too. Just because a guy is a football writer doesn't mean he actually knows anything. Fortunately, he's not actually running the Bills.

I probably won't be reading too much of his stuff any more. That article was plain silly.

  11. ppl are saying Gailey will run a spread offense...what exactly is a spread offense and what does it entail?..do we have enough WR's to do this?..what do you think Buffalo needs to get to run this offense?...hehe, sorry..just wanted to pick your brains on this as I'm trying to do my mock draft and wondering if we have the necessary components for this offense they want to use...so far I see our WR's being Evans, Johnson, Hardy, Parrish and Reed...not sure if Parrish fits or will be kept...T.O will be gone most likely and Hardy is still a ?...I like Reed, but does he fit and/or stay?...From my understanding the spread is a 5 WR with no RB and the QB in shotgun...although I see more of a 4 WR with RB and QB in shotgun...but does this mean 4 actual WR's or just 4 receivers consisting of WR, TE and RB's?..if so, then it really doesn't sound all that different then just an offense..ok I sound stupid here, but I'd really like to know..thanx

    Check out this site: http://www.thespreadoffense.com/

Google, obviously, also has lots on the spread.

A spread can be running or passing oriented. The idea is to spread out the defense and open more running/passing lanes.

  12. As a leader I expect him not to throw Qb's under the bus and openly campaign for one player over another, especially through the media like he did for Losman over the likes of several other QB's. Evans liked Losman because he knew he'd get those long passes several times per game, even if it hurt the rest of our offense.

As far as running routes. He is probably the worst route runner I've seen. He never goes across the middle and I've seen him time and again pull up and let a ball get intercepted if he has to take on a safety going for the ball. he avoids all contact. Watch him sometime and go to a game. Last game I went to the folks I was with watched every route he ran. he never crossed over the hash marks on any route for the entire game. Whether that is him or coaching, who can say for sure. But I would expect as much pressure as our Qb's have been under that he would at times have to cross a hash mark to adjust a route to help a QB out. Not once. Watching on TV it is also pretty obvious he is a one route pony.

So as good as those pretty long passes are they are rare (under 8 per year). Add to that his obvious poor attitude and off field chattering, he is not a team player.

I tend to agree. I don't think Evans has been a great Bills receiver. There's no way he starts over Reed or Lofton, and its not automatic that he plays over Beebe either. Great WRs will have dominant games once in a while, even with a bad team. I can't ever recall that from Evans.

  13. Evans over Beebe, no doubt. Bills find a way to get him on the field. I don't think Stroud even comes close to starting over Wright. Stroud might be a little bigger but he's slow and Wright makes a lot more plays. I think our entire secondary is better now other than Strong Safety.

I disagree on Stroud. Wright was overrated and not a great NT in the 3-4. Our run defense actually got worse when they replaced Smerlas with Wright.

  14. I remember him from his college years, and there was just something about the way he played with the Jets that impressed me. His competitiveness, strong arm and experience in colder weather are traits I like. He is not from Calif. and has traits that Trent lacks. Not saying he would be the next star qb, but I think he could be worth a look compared to other free agents. My first choice is to grab Bradford or Claussen in Round 1, but I'm not impressed with other draft prospects or free agents.

I remember him from his college years too. He was average at best and didn't show enough to be the clear-cut starter over Jason Fife at Oregon. He would be a disaster as a starter, and will be a career backup IMO.

  15. Funny we aledgedly have talent on Defense? Ok then why did we never have a top quality rated defense with Fewell? Bottom line IMHO Caughlin just sealed his fate as NYG coach hiring fewell.

I think we never had a top rated defense because of the system (the Tampa 2 or whatever the heck you want to call it sucks), and because of the way Fewell implemented it. Too conservative and predictable.

  16. I love the guy and this article further shows why. He doesn't give a damn what 'experts' or some hyper depressive fans have to say about his hire. So he didn't beat Georgia, you don't fire a coach with a winning record and 6 bowl apperances because of that. As for as KC is concerned, their HC wanted to run his offense and call his plays. To do so he had to fire Gailey. And lets see isn't KC drafting ahead of us? Yeah that offense really lit it up after Gailey was fired

I just wish we had Nix running the show way back instead of Donahoe. I am convinced we would be contenders by now.

Nix was busy making the Chargers into contenders at that point :w00t:
