The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Gene Frenkle replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I don't recall saying that and I don't know what Biden would do. What I would like, and I don't think it's too much to ask, is a competent and honest leader with a plan to get the country through a tough time. I'm critiquing the job that's being done as opposed to hypothesizing about how someone else might do it. -

Words are important - especially the words of the leader of the free world during a worldwide crisis. People want and need a clear, consistent and honest message from the top right now. I'll agree with you that it doesn't necessarily matter so much during normal times, but these are not normal times. I'd like to see him step up be the leader the people need. Anything less is simply below the bar. -

My recent posts have been quotes from the doc and literally nothing more. If you don't like these quotes and they upset you, we have that in common. As far as I know, FDR had no warning about the attack on Pearl Harbor. If he did, and then dragged his heels on a response, your comparison would be more spot on. If I'm less pleasant than usual about this, it's because I'm angry at the bungling. Screw China and their cover-up as well. I'm stuck at home like everyone else and want this to go away just like everyone else. If you believe Fauci, who has zero reason to lie, this means that Trump had actionable information and advice early on that he chose to ignore, likely causing this economic shutdown to last longer than it need to. IMHO, instead of looking at this as a leftist attack on Trump, you should be angry too, as it affects us all. -

Here, another article from the media that only wants to see Trump fail: https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fauci-expresses-cautious-optimism-over-latest-coronavirus-statistics “‘What would have, what could have,’ it’s very difficult to go back and say that. I mean, obviously, you could logically say that if you had a process that was ongoing and you started mitigation earlier, you could have saved lives. Obviously, no one is going to deny that. But, what goes into those kinds of decisions is complicated." He continued, "If we had, right from the very beginning, shut everything down, it may have been a little bit different, but there was a lot of pushback about shutting things down.” -

Are they fake quotes too? It's the BBC, a relatively neutral rag. Read what the man said and tell me again how it's fake news. -

Coronavirus: Fauci says US 'could have saved lives' with earlier action https://www.bbc.com/news/amp/world-us-canada-52264860 When asked about a New York Times report that Dr Fauci and other officials had suggested aggressive mitigation towards the end of February, Dr Fauci said health officials could only make recommendations from a "pure health standpoint". "Often, the recommendation is taken. Sometimes, it's not. But it is what it is, we are where we are right now." Dr Fauci, who is leading the US response to coronavirus, added that "no one is going to deny" that logically, earlier mitigation could have saved lives. But he said "what goes into those kinds of decisions is complicated". -

The Big Gamble: Hydroxychloroquine
Gene Frenkle replied to Magox's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
So push for it and stockpile behind the scenes. That's clearly the thing to do if your scenario is accurate. Saying it publicly, even if he had an informed gut feel, does nothing but give false hope and spike demand. Seems kind of counterproductive. -
The Big Gamble: Hydroxychloroquine
Gene Frenkle replied to Magox's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
So you think it's ok that he was duping America by giving false hope about a drug he certainly had no way of knowing either works or doesn't? I'll stand by it being inappropriate at best. It's almost like he cares more about himself than he does about the rest of us. A gamble so he can maybe say he was right. -

The Big Gamble: Hydroxychloroquine
Gene Frenkle replied to Magox's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
My problem with this whole thing is that it was irresponsible and inappropriate for him to gamble on this by immediately hitching his horse to the HCQ wagon for all to see. It's a gamble to gain political capital, plain and simple. It may turn out that this is an effective treatment and if so, great. I would prefer if he had let the docs do their thing and refrained from giving questionable medical advice, as he's obviously unqualified to do so. Had he just let the experts do their jobs, this would not have turned into the most ridiculous and miscast political issue of the crisis to date. -

Agree that the side effects are overblown because of low risk percentages. I'm in the camp that if it works, great. Do you think it should be given prevntatively or just to patients in trouble? Back to dude's theory: do you think it's likely, holds promise, is being looked at, should be investigated? -

Honestly, I'm having a hard time trusting your judgement on this. Following up "zero verifiable deaths" with "zero full hospitals" makes it seem like you need to diversify your sources of information. I don't want to sound like more of an a-hole than necessary here. -

They are people, under immense stress, on the front lines, putting their lives at risk while the rest of us sit at home and wait for it all to end. Who the hell are you to judge them? -
