You explained your situation and I can see why you made that choice, given where you were living. I might do the same in that situation. Don't take things so personally. I even cited the idea of locale in my post, though I (now correctly) assumed that you live in a low crime neighborhood, at least with respect to violent crime. Still, there are many, many folks all over the map who use the same exact reasoning with no basis for it at all. It's the most common answer given always.

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

Of course they did. But now Trump has clearly and directly emboldened them. That much is undeniable. -
I provided links and another poster provided the second part up-thread. I just want to add that, in my opinion, the problem is, as many here are often eager to point out, the media. Many of these crimes, just like child abductions and other evil schitt are sensationalized in the media and dominate news cycles because that leads to clicks. You see it all the time, but it doesn't happen very often at all. I was surprised by the numbers as well. I did assume that the numbers would be relatively low, but not that low.

Nope. I have no problem with it, actually. I'm just interested in debating how important it really is. Given the crime stats and as well as stats around how having guns at home actually increases your odds of being killed by a gun, I wonder if "keeping my family safe from intruders" people are really just making themselves feel better without accomplishing the desired goal. That said, it obviously helps you sleep at night, so by all means, have at it. I honestly hope you never have to use it. Maybe. Plenty to go around. Plus, you're married. In quarentine. I love you man. You may need that gun after all! ?

Not small. Not "one in a million". One in 3.282 million. It's not a rational fear, that's all I'm saying. Now if you want to say you like the sound and feel of it going off in your hand, or you want to hunt or it makes you feel like more of a man, then so be it. All I'm saying is that your fear is not rational. You literally have better odds of winning the lottery. Mega Millions: 1 in 302.6 million. Powerball: 1 in 292.2 million. Play the odds and buy some lottery tickets instead. Think of all the guns and ammo you could buy!

There are roughly 100 burglary homicides per year in the United States. There are roughly 328.2 million people in the United States. The chance of any one person getting killed by a burglar in any given year is roughly .0000304692%, or 1 in 3,282,000. Pretty sure I did that math right and this of course discounts factors like where you live, which in your case probably makes it even less likely. Now I'm sure you'll say something like "stats aren't important when I'm facing an armed invader", and that's fine. I'll say that your stated reason for owning a gun is not rational. You and your family members are far more likely to die of almost any other reasonable cause. You have a right to own guns in the United States, and that's fine. With all due respect, your reasoning here is absurd.

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

It's justification after the fact for Trump acting like it wasn't a big deal. Now you have his base trying to claim that the numbers are inflated like it's some political issue or something ######ed like that. What a joke. What an absolute disgusting disgrace. I almost can't believe what I'm reading here. It's like Trump wins if it's "not that bad". Now you have every nutjob in the country acting like a conspiracy theorist just so their daddy can be right and get re-elected. It's unbelievable. Way to show your true colors. Hey deplorables, way to live up to the stereotype! Do you remember when he said that fifteen cases would soon be zero? Is that what this is all about? You're all a bunch of ***** losers with zero empathy for what's going on around you. Jesus ***** Christ on a cross. Arguing for inflated numbers is a new low. It's a conspiracy!!!. Piss the ***** off. -

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Gene Frenkle replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I just read an article. It's saying the the increased bandwidth and lowered latency will make it so that we can have many more devices connected to the same network. The download speeds (if accurate) will be incredible. So we'll potentially be paying for convenience with our privacy, due to hackers, possible surveillance, etc... The only difference in this from 4G is the speed and frequency of the signal I believe. Trump apparently has a plan to nationalize the nations's 5G network, he says to make it more secure. Which should be a clue that it's probably nuts. -

Well that escalated quickly. Do you have a shovel in your hand every day? Should I be thanking you for your service during these trying times?
