Yes, he had 16 TDs. That's one year.
Over the last three years, he's managed 2, then 2, and then 16.
What's next year most likely to look like? Seven? Eight, maybe? Nine? That's my guess. Maybe it'll be 16 again, but he still has a lot to prove before that seems very likely.
Right now it looks like some kind of statistical anomaly. Not that that means Cook isn't good. He is. But for RBs, a high TD count has an awful lot to do with how many chances he gets and how good the OL is, of course. His long breakaways (and he has a few) are a different situation. His speed made a lot of difference on several of those plays, but overall you just see well-blocked, well-executed plays which did not require a sensational effort by the back.
Doubt it?
Here's a video of all his TDs last season.
Do you look at this and say, "Wow, what a back!! Almost none of those get scored by another runner?" I don't. I see speed killing on three or so of those plays. And that beautiful five or six yard run up the gut where a guy hits him head on and his contact balance allows him to get right off it and score. Other than that, though, I see a lot of effective plays by a fine football team.
Again, currently his 4.9 ypc would place him in the top 10 in nfl history. In 2023, he was 6th in total yards from scrimmage. https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/nfl-yards-from-scrimmage-leaders-2023
is he Barkley or Henry? No. But he is only legit game breaker on this entire offense besides Allen. It is quite an assumption to assume Davis (who averaged a full yard less per carry when backups normally average more than the starters because they got against tired defenses) and Ty Johnson (there’s a reason he’s bounced around) can fill Cook’s shoes. He’s been a great draft pick no matter how some fans try to downplay his success.
5 hours ago, machine gun kelly said:It was a good sign he showed up for mandatory mini camp. I still think we let him play out his contract then franchise tag him in 2026. Get what we can out of him and allocate more $ to extending Torrence, McGovern, and Edwards. A top 3 O line is far more important than a RB. He’s no King Henry or Barkley.
I don’t disagree but there’s some double standards. When we talked about Allen’s MVP case, everyone downplayed all the pieces around him. Now when it’s Cook, people love mentioning the o line.
I would counter that Allen and Cook are helped a lot by the oline and each other. Additionally, I think our WRs hurt them both because teams don’t fear getting beat deep so they play the line closer than they should with a guy like Allen’s arm.

Kinda hated the Coleman pick. But I’m willing to give him a full nfl offseason before I’m going to write him off. Honestly, kinda freely to look at a 2nd round pick as money in your pocket.

Sean McDermott is literally top 15 all time if you take modern NFL coaches
Nobody would take Ron Rivera over Sean McDermott
You seem to always forget that winning the super bowl in the NFL is a combination of coaching talent luck healthiness
Dan Marino is the best pure quarterback in the history of the game and he never won... Jeff hostetler and Mark rypien have super bowls lol
Sean McDermott gets credit for helping Josh Allen develop... How many insanely talented quarterbacks bust? How many raw quarterbacks bust?
Sean has been there since day one and been a calming coaching influence and the type of guy that lets young players grow
The ring culture has ruined sports. Guys who are in the 1% of their fields, who are amazing at that level are “losers” if they don’t win a SB or championship. You get coaches fired 2 years after winning a championship. It’s insane.

Absolutely insane that a guy either one arm became a nfl player. Makes me feel like a complete loser with my 2 arms. 😔

That's good he showed up. But he still sent tweats and made his contract process a public thing. He didn't show up for OTA's. Some could look at that as not the right way to go about it. Ultimately, he saw the writing on the wall and showed up, though. That was smart of him. He has zero leverage.
Omg!!! He sent out tweets!!!!
dude wants to/ should get paid. He has been a home run pick and earned a nice raise. Bills fans were a million times more dramatic than Cook, who barely even speaks. But those tweets did hurt my feelings during the time no games were played. 😔

I had no idea he was still in the nfl. I think he was a pretty popular draft prospect here during his draft process.

I think Cook's agent would slam the phone down on your ear at that offer.
You do the BS it’s 3 years for $40 million but it’s not really $40 million because there are so many hard incentives to reach. Agents just look for the little Adam tweets that sounds really good.

Sure, all those things play into it. Look at the Godwin report from this morning.
Why Chris Godwin spurned Patriots' $30 million offer, signed for less money with Buccaneers
"One opinion mattered to Godwin — his wife Mariah's," Pompei reports in an extensive article. " They went over the possibilities and concluded they would take less, much less, to stay in Tampa."
I moved away from the north almost 20 years ago, and it would take a TON more money to get me to move back to those 8-month winters.
8 month winters is very dramatic bro! 6 max!
im different. All I wanted to do was get away from Buffalo when I was younger. But with the ability to travel, good job, cost of living, I kinda love Buffalo. Pros and cons to everywhere. Plus, for players, it’s like 6 months a year playing on a SB contender to be set for life.

Sure. We'll be fine without anyone as long as we have Josh. But Cook has been the biggest help to Josh since we got Diggs. Gives us a real threat in the running game that teams must respect, and last year, took the short yardage burden off Josh (when the coaches were smart enough to use him). And when most of the fanbase is screaming at the FO to get Josh more help, I never understood why we'd also want to let Cook go (or trade him away).
We're definitely more optimized for a SB with him than without him. Agreed.
As for camp, I assumed he'd be at anything mandatory.
This notion that anyone can be a good rb is pretty foolish. I believe the best way to look at rbs is on a bad team, it doesn’t matter. But on a SB contender, it can take you to another level. Getting rid of the second best offensive player (not counting the most 2nd most important ones - the oline) would severely hurt this team.

But whether that means we are optimized for a Super Bowl run… maybe?
im honestly surprised. Thought it would be a day one of training camp arrivalCook was the best player in the title game. Obviously, Allen is a major reason why but if Cook got the ball more, we might have went to the SB. He is only game breaker on offense besides Allen.
13 minutes ago, DrDawkinstein said:As much as I'd love to have Cook around for a few more year, I think this ship has sailed. I think it's as simple as Cook's market number is much higher than what Beane is willing to pay. And that's a fair take on both sides.
I dont think Beane will come up to $15M/yr now or this season. So Cook will hit the market and get his money there. Unless we tag him as a makeshift "5th year option".
I think a "team friendly" deal for Cook right now is at about $14M/yr. Nothing less than that is getting done. IMO.
Eh, just do like $11/ season ish type with a bunch of incentives for him to hit.

A stat I found that is pretty interesting is Ray Davis, who is going to be turning 26, had 746 carries in college and 113 last year.
Cook, who will also be 26, had 533 nfl carries and 230 in college. In terms of wear and tear, Cook is the “younger” player.

He'd be an absolute moron to hold out, A. he's a RB.
B. The Bills don't play around , they're an elite organization and won't be held hostage by a player, they'll make the right decision for the team
C. It kills his value, not only this year but with any future team, looking at him as a Me first player.
Leveon Bell is the closest comp and his value was much larger, Cook isn’t even a consensus top 10 back
You’re too emotional.
the guy has the best leverage of his career, saw every other player in his draft class get paid, and doesn’t want to play on the last year of his deal as a RB. It makes total sense from his side. Guy barely talks and has gotten better every year. He was the best player in the title game.
I like Ray Davis (great dude off the field as well) and Johnson but people are going to be surprised when there is a drop off if/ when they have to play more. It’s crazy but maybe the guy who was 3rd best at breaking long runs last year is important to this team.
3 minutes ago, Long Suffering Fan said:I'm with Gunner on this. As much as I love draft picks, a 5th or a 6th? I would much rather have Cook for another year.
As much as some people pooh, pooh culture, this might be a spot where it helps. The family culture and the bond at least *seems* so strong on this team that it is hard to believe that this will get that ugly. Anything can happen, but I would expect that he will be back and play out the year. Meanwhile, I have no hard feelings towards Cook that is trying to use what leverage he has in order to get paid.
Agreed and I think both sides want to make a deal. But I get it from both sides. TJ watt and Hendrickson are doing the same thing. It’s part of negotiating.

I have no problem with any player chasing a payday.
I ESPECIALLY have no problem with any running back chasing a payday, knowing the short shelf life of the position.
That said, I don't think Cook has gone about this in the most strategically advantageous way. The Bills are an organization who has shown that if you operate in good faith, show up, continue to work hard and play well, they WILL pay you. On the other hand, they've also shown that if you make you make a public spectacle out of things, become a distraction, stop showing up, and become a potential detriment to team chemistry and culture, they will NOT pay you.
I think the "push for your payday" advice that Cook received is fine. I think the WAY that he has been advised to go about pushing for said payday is ill-advised. The only way it makes sense to me is if he actively wants out of Buffalo.
All of that said, I expect him to show up for the season, play well, and then get paid. Hopefully by some other team, but it won't shock me if its the Bills.I agree with most of this but if I was to n Cook’s shoes, I would do the same thing. This is the most leverage he will ever have in his entire career. Playing on a one year contract is awful for any player but especially a rb. If he plays on a one year deal he: risks suffering a major injury; gets less touches that hurts his value, and the Bills run him into the ground (I don’t see that).
every other good player for his Bills draft class has gotten a new deal. And I’d argue Cook has the best resume out of all of them. His brother’s career basically ended at 27.
I get how it is tough to pay rb. But Cook has gotten better every year. He was the BEST player in the championship game and we might have won if he touched the ball more. This is going to be a story on Hard knocks.
3 minutes ago, Big Turk said:Have you watched him in game? He is awful, even last year. Improving when you are starting at like a 0/10 and "improving" to a 2/10 isn't moving the needle.
I’d love to see a real breakdown of this. Is Johnson better? Sure but I think this has been way overstated how bad Cook is.

Lol...the dumbest part of this by Diggs is he knows there is a camera recording lol.
That being said, not sure how anyone could discipline Diggs here. I haven't heard of Pink Coke before, but regardless of what it was or wasn't, not sure how anyone can prove it was if Diggs denies it and says it was something else.
So I think the only person Diggs may be in the most trouble with is his boo Cardi B lol...although rumor is she was also on the boat, so maybe not lol
Sources say it’s awesome but drugs ruin lives.
I will say social media has killed having “fun.” Idiots have to record and post everything. I believe Derek Jeter used to take everyone’s phones at parties. Imagine the 90s Bulls during this era. Half of the team would be suspended. It’s insane of good of people most nfl players have to be. If they make the slightest mistake in public, it’s going viral in an hour.
also very happy Diggs is not our problem anymore (though he will put up solid numbers for the stupid Pats).

Not good news. I would be astonished if Beane ever signs an aging, injury-prone superstar again.
He can’t help it!!!
I was fine with them taking a shot since it’s a one year deal but this is the least surprising thing ever. We need a game changer at DE so you end up taking risks on guys who might be damaged goods. Hopefully, one of the young guys steps up.

these two are needed for the post season. Not to wear them out in season. There is more than enough DEs to manage Bosa health. Dorian Williams can also easily take snaps from Milano keeping him healthy.
I don’t know if works that way in football. I actually think the less you play, the more likely you are to get hurt.

Is there a metric that tracks impact of man-games lost due to reckless play? Between injuries to Rasul Douglas, Taron Johnson, and himself due to his carelessness, you have to wonder whether his "reasonable productiveness" is offset by drop off in skill when backups are covering for the damage he inflicts.
He’s also made a lot of big plays with that style as well. He’s not a star and has some big flaws (coverage) but he is a solid player who goes all out. He’s also started on a SB winner so you could do a lot worse than Rapp.

This is an awesome breakdown. Thank you!
But this is also where the science leaves off and the art of football analysis picks up: how much of this was the ghost of Amari Cooper's previous threat influencing or revealing defensive coverages? And/or how much of this was Amari Cooper's actual performance and production?
I think if the Bills don't have an obvious matchup nightmare "#1" WR going into 2025, which they don't, that's fine...but on one hand it obviously limits an offense's ability to dictate/predict coverages, and on the other hand it allows Brady and Allen and the Gang to continue to evolve their Everyone Eats/Total Futbol offensive approach of spreading it out. Kind of like the NBA's triangle offense, which has since proliferated. Do the Bills have a Scotty Pippen and a Steve Kerr and a Horace Grant to run the Triangle with Josh Allen? Still looking for Pippen to step up, I think.
Even if Cooper was washed (and he had 1,200 yards the year before with not great qbs), he’s still threat that DCs respect. Before him, we had no one that falls in the category. When you have Cooper, everyone shifts down a spot which makes them more effective.
so the Hope is that Palmer is a younger Cooper with upside and Moore (who definitely have talent), and Coleman can take a jump playing with Allen. Personally, Palmer is very meh to me and played with one of the best passing qbs in the league for a team desperate for a number 1 wr. I do really like the Moore pickup.
I still don’t know how really scary this group is but they certainly have some nice pieces and are probably league average when last year they were one of the worst groups headed into camp.

Because Pickens, who has top talent, is also top 5 crazy person in the league. If Tomlin gives up on you, that says a lot.
that said, this could be the best thing for his career. Gets to be a number 2 option with a good passing qb. If only they didn’t have the most mid head coach ever (completely forgot who it was), this would be a great move for the Cowboys depending on the pick.
