  1. I'm guessing that the Bills won't use the "no huddle" formation much against the Patsies*, no matter how much they show it in the preseason - partly because the Bellicheat* has all summer to prepare for it, but also because NE is one of the teams you do NOT want to get into a "shoot out" with, with Brady back, and all the weapons he has at his disposal. I think it will be a healthy dose of Fred Jackson, and just enough slant passes to TO and Reed to keep them honest, keep the game close, and be in a position to win it with a 4th quarter FG.

    I think I've been channeling DJ! ;-(

    GO BILLS!

  2. And if it's tied at the end of the 5th 'quarter'?

I prefer the idea of having them set the game clock to 5:00, and play until time expires. Coin toss determines who kicks off/receives for the 1st OT period. If it's still tied at the end of 5:00, you play another 5:00 period, but at that point, you start alternating who kicks off/receives (like the 3rd quarter). This is similar to the NBA, and look how exciting some of these playoff games have been this year that have gone into multiple overtimes! And it is still "football", with the same importance given to offense, defense, and special teams.

    8-8 ... at least it's an improvement!

  4. Very funny edition. The Obama take-off on the podium was great.

Actually, I think you meant to say the " GW Bush take-off on the podium" - the reference was to Bush's speech on an aircraft carrier shortly after the initial invasion of Iraq, where he stated that the Iraq war was essentially over. He was standing under a big "Mission Accomplished" banner, like Berman was in this cartoon.

  5. At the end of the 2000 season Bill Belichick career record was 41 wins and 55 losses that was the last year he did not have Tom Brady as his QB. IMO the best QB of all time. I cannot stand him but he is a pure winner. Romeo, Charlie, and ManGenious all have bombed in there post NE jobs. As it stands right know he is a hall of fame coach. I do not think he is that special he has just got the best toy on the block to play with. He must thank his lucky stars every day for Brady.

... but he won 11 games last year without Brady, so you really can't attribute ALL BB's success to his QB.

  6. The one guy not picked up by anyone that I would like to see a bill is Derrek Brooks......I dont know that he would be great for us but he knows the system and would bring veteran leadership to this team.

I dunno ... I still have nightmares about Eddie Robinson being faked out of his shoes by Chad Pennington a few years ago. Signing and having to rely on "past their prime" players is rarely a good thing in this league. As good as Derrek was all those years, I think there is a reason he is still out there. Either he wants too much $$, or there aren't any teams who think he is better at this point in his career than some younger player they already have on their roster.

  7. Only saw him play a couple of times last year - he was a monster in the running game against Oakland, and had a decent game against the Colts (neutralized Freeny). Must be a reason he was cut by the Texans (even well before the draft). But I'm thinking he might be a better "insurance policy" at LT than someone like Levi Jones. Salaam has a better history staying healthy.

  8. Is there a link to that story? I'd like to read it if you have it.

Not much more than what was quoted above, but here you go:

    Wendell Bryant Wants Back In

... and there's also this more detailed report, including a statement that he did get a try out with the Bills a couple weeks ago ....

    Bryant Wants 2nd Chance

“Now, my body feels like it’s at a point where I can still play very well,” Bryant said. ”Playing football is not something that just goes away just like that. I’m looking forward to a new opportunity and kicking some butt. I had a really good tryout with Buffalo. There’s currently no offer, but I’m hoping for a chance.”

Added Bryant’s agent, Marc Lillibridge: “He had a great workout for the Bills. They were very impressed.”

    GO BILLS!

  9. What is with everyone and these garbage tackles? What is the point to adding people to the roster that don't upgrade anything? Pashos and Jones aren't better than the tackles we have here now, and they certainly aren't worth stunting the growth of our players either. If the tackle is not a legitimate starter, then FORGET ABOUT IT.

    2 words .... LEVI JONES! ;-)

  10. Those hoping that Tom Golisano is in the wings, waiting to take over the Bills after Ralph, might want to read this article ... he may not be much different than Ralph in some respects (like willingness to spend money to build a competitive team):

Publicly, Robert stands alone. Privately, he has plenty of company. Several ex-teammates supported him and called for changes at the top. Golisano, the billionaire once praised for rescuing the Sabres from bankruptcy, is now being criticized in hockey circles for not making a strong enough commitment to winning.

    Robert Criticizes Sabres

  11. Per Rotoworld:

Jim Leonhard is expected to replace Leon Washington as the Jets' primary punt returner this season.

Washington will stay on kickoff returns, but the Jets hope to keep him fresher for an increased offensive role. Leonhard will likely also start at safety, although it remains to be seen if he's at the free or strong position.

    Source: New York Daily News

Call me crazy, but this doesn't strike much fear into me....I thought the Jets were over-estimating Leonhard's safety skills when they signed him, but if they want him to return punts too, that's fine by me...hope he still has the job when they face the Bills!

P.S. - I've always kinda liked Leonhard from his Bills time, but he just didn't strike me as quality starter material.

    He's more of a "punt catcher" .... B-)

  12. What I said about high profile people feeling the need for protection and rightfully so, I thought was relevant when defending Marshawns possible reasons for having a gun handily available in his trunk.

All he had to do was get it properly licensed. He made the decision that law "didn't apply to him", and now he, and the team, and the league, have to suffer the consequences of that decision. The suspension is to try and teach him, and other players who are watching, that they have to comply with the gun laws that are on the books.

  13. I probably didn't explain my point well enough. I don't at all think that Goodell should only base his decision on the "legal outcome". I was just looking at the specifics of these two specific cases against Lynch only. And in both of them, there is a huge difference between what may have happened and what we know for sure happened.

I understand what you are saying, but my point is it all comes down to a pattern of, at best, "stupid decisions" (or "mistakes") that put the player, and by association the team and the league, in an embarrassing position. That in and of itself is enough for the Commissioner to come down on the player as hard as he thinks is necessary to make sure nothing like this happens for a THIRD time.

In the end, that's probably a 1 or 2 game suspension and fine at this point, but not because of anything ML may or may not have actually done, but just because he is showing a continuing pattern of "stupidity" that is reflecting badly on the league.

  14. Fred is 5 years older than Lynch. If we went with Jackson as the starter, at the most, he's likely got 4 good years left as a starting RB in this league. Lynch, on the other hand, likely has about 8 or 9 good years left.

Average career length for NFL running backs has more to do with the number of hits they take than chronologic age ... I doubt ML will last 8 or 9 years, at least based on his current running style (running over as many people as possible, and never "giving up"). It's why he's so good, and why we all like having him in the backfield - but also what will ultimately shorten his career in the NFL. I'll be surprised if he can keep that up for more than 4 years himself. I'm not saying Jackson will last longer ... only that at this point, they are probably "even" as far as career expectancy as a starter.

  15. But the fact is that in both cases, the law decided the infractions were on the lesser side rather than the worse side. That doesn't at all mean it wasn't as bad as it appears.

But what it does mean is that you can't assume it was worse. If they had any more evidence against him in both cases they surely would have used it. It would be completely unfair for The Commish to just assume he knows what happened because he simply doesn't (unless he knows something the public doesn't). Even if Goodell is pretty sure Lynch was in fact more guilty than the infractions that he got, it still would not be right to base his punishment on that opinion. Yes, he has the power, yes he can do whatever he wants, but he is really going off in bad territory if he bases these things on his gut feelings.

That's why I will not at all be surprised when this is cut down to one, or more likely two games, which is what it should be based on what we know for sure.

You are probably right, in that this will ultimately get reduced to 2 games .... or 1 game plus 1 more game check as a fine ... but I disagree that Goodell should base his decision on the "legal outcome" of the infractions. His sole criteria should be the affect it has on "public opinion" about the NFL, its teams, and its players. What Lynch did may not have had horrific legal implications, but it still is, at best, another embarrassing black-eye for the league, and the Commissioner has the responsibility to do anything/everything he can to show that the league won't tolerate such behavior, and to provide a deterrent against future incidents, both from ML, and from other players. So no matter what he really "knows" about what happened, or what ML did or did not do, his only concern is to do what he can to protect the image/integrity of the league, its teams, and its players. And considering the current state, that's definitely going to be an uphill battle which may require him to come down harder on players for stuff like this ... especially repeat offenders who keep putting themselves and the league into "embarrassing" situations like ML has done.

  16. I'm a Bills fan, and I hope ML is sincere about "changing his ways", but I have no problem with the suspension, whether it ultimately gets reduced or not. The attitude that some of these young players are developing about being "above the law", and entitled to do anything they want because they are NFL players is getting out of hand, and that has to be stopped. We all laughed about Ko Simpson yelling "Do you know who I am? I'm worth MILLIONS" as the cops were dragging his butt to jail, but that underlying attitude is real, and apparently has become more the norm than the exception with the current generation of players. I'll support any effort Goodell undertakes towards that end, whether it adversely affects the Bills in the short term or not. 3 games is not that much, considering that he let ML off with nothing but a slap on the wrist the last time, and that did no good. Goodell probably felt "betrayed" by ML's latest actions after he let him off last time, and that no doubt played some role in his decision this time.

  17. Didn't Wright have some legal troubles right after the draft or during his rookie season?

I actually was sort of high on him; good to see he's getting another shot.

    Yeah, he was a "2-time loser" ....

    First, there was this ....

    Wed, 03 Jul 2002 02:35:17 -0700

Associated Press reports Buffalo Bills rookie WR Rodney Wright, a seventh-round draft selection, was arrested Tuesday on charges that he injured two people during a hit-and-run crash. Wright surrendered Tuesday afternoon and was jailed on reckless driving and felony hit-and-run charges.

    Wed, 08 Jan 2003 17:45:18 -0800

The AP reports Buffalo Bills practice squad WR Rodney Wright pleaded guilty Wednesday to leaving the scene of a collision that injured two people. Under the plea deal in Fresno County Superior Court, Wright faces no penalty if he stays out of trouble for a year. If he has another brush with the law, he could face up to three years in state prison for the felony.

.... and then 9 months after his plea deal, he followed that up with this ....

    Tue, 16 Sep 2003 07:18:51 -0700

The Buffalo News reports the Buffalo Bills' release last week of WR Rodney Wright came shortly after he was charged with driving while intoxicated following a three-car accident in Hamburg, N.Y. Police and team sources said Wright was also charged with driving without a license and making an unsafe lane change after refusing a Breathalyzer test at the scene. Wright's vehicle apparently struck the one ahead of him, sending that vehicle toward oncoming traffic, while he attempted to change lanes. The receiver could face up to three years in prison for violating the California agreement if he's convicted in the Hamburg case.

Maybe he's finally grown up? Hope so for his sake ....
