  1. arians throws the ball more than gailey though. hes successful because he has andrew luck. he would drive us crazy in buffalo

In yesterday's game, the Colts' running game in the first half was awful - total of 12 yards running in the first 2 quarters. They lost 2 starters on the OL in the first half. Made adjustments at half time, came out in the 2nd half and stuck with the run, put together 2 long TD drives, churning out a total of 86 yards on the ground. He keeps running it even when it's "not working", at least to keep the defense honest ... and eventually, wear the D down.

  2. Bruce Arians .

Living here in the Indianapolis area, I've been very impressed with the job he's done in the roles of both HC and OC since Chuck Pagano's illness. He definitely has his team "playing to win", rather than "playing not to lose". Yesterday's close game with the Titans is a good example. Less than 2 minutes to play, Titans out of time-outs, Colts ball on their own 25 yard line, up by 4, 2nd and 8, and he has his rookie qb throw a 12-yard strike to his rookie TE over the middle ...(which looked to be into tight coverage!) Luck got the completion, and the Colts did the "victory formation" to win the game.

MOST coaches probably would have played it safe at that point - run as much time off the clock as possible, punt it, and hope the defense could prevent a last-second touchdown. But Arians showed confidence in his offense, and it paid off. They've won 8 out of 10 since Arians took over for Pagano, and almost every win has been close, "gutty" football, requiring key calls in key situations, good clock management at "crunch time", and a willingness to take some risks - everything the Bills currently lack.

Colts expect Pagano to be back on the sideline by the last game of the season, (and hopefully into the playoffs). I don't know that Arians would consider taking a HC job somewhere else next year if it were offered - but he's at least the TYPE of coach I'd hope the Bills would go after if they get the chance.

    GO BILLS!

  3. My favorite quote from this Pats' board thread was the "signature" of one of the posters:

“ I think good coaches will coach with the personnel they have, and if you only have one (good) linebacker, you’re not going to play a 3–4. ”

—Hank Bullough, who installed one of the first 3–4 defenses with the New England Patriots.

Bet that really took the sails out of their wind .... ;-)

  4. If Fisher takes the Miami job, there is a good chance that Gregg Williams could leave the Saints and join him as the DC.

I heard that Williams' contract is up this year. It's also possible that Gregg Williams could interview for the Rams job once

the Saints are out of the playoffs.

Scuttlebut here in Indy is that once the new GM is hired (announced today that it will be Ryan Grigson of the Iggles), they will quickly relieve Jim Caldwell of his head coaching duties and find new coach. Supposedly Gregg Williams is on the short list of candidates Irsay wants to talk with about that.

    There's also this:

    Phinphanatic.com

Brian Miller wonders if Jeff Fisher, the most coveted head coach candidate, is waiting to see if the Colts fire Caldwell. "If Caldwell is released, the Indy job suddenly becomes the hot spot for a top coach. In fact, it’s very likely that Fisher could spurn both the Rams and Dolphins and head north to join Peyton Manning. Remember, Fisher loves Peyton Manning."

  5. That'd end the game. Here's the relevant rule:

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81d817d7/article/postseason-overtime-rules

Each team must possess or have the opportunity to possess the ball unless the team that has the ball first scores a touchdown on its initial possession.

» Opportunity to possess: The opportunity to possess occurs only during kicking plays. A kickoff is an opportunity to possess for the receiving team. If the kicking team legally recovers the kick, the receiving team is considered to have had its opportunity. A punt or a field goal that crosses the line of scrimmage and is muffed by the receiving team is considered to be an opportunity to possess for the receivers. Normal touching rules by the kicking team apply.

Thanks! Wonder if any team would have the nerve to try that? Sort of like the Saints on-side kicking after half-time to the Colts in their Super Bowl win ... except that they knew that if they didn't recover it, they would still have another half of football to try and "make up for it".

Could be an interesting strategy against an "offensive juggernaut" ... like GB, NO, and the Cheatriots ....
