  1. ... I know a lot of poeple are anti-Clausen, but I think he would immediately be the Bills' best QB.

... but that's not really saying much, and for the money they'll have to pay a top-10 pick who also happens to be a QB, they'd need to be sure he really was much more than just the best they have on the current roster.

  2. One other game that sticks out in my memory was in November 1975, a MNF game against Cincinnati (in Cinci). I remember because it was my 21st birthday. OJ Simpson ran wild that night ... something close to 200 yards. Of course, Ken Anderson passed for about 400 yards against the Bills, and the Bengals won it going away.

One play that sticks out in my mind was with OJ running into the secondary, with 3 or 4 Bengals chasing/closing in on him, and he makes a cut and slips and falls, but at the same moment, all the defenders slip and fall too, and OJ was able to get up untouched and run another 10-15 yards before finally being brought down. They used to show that play regularly on the "NFL Bloopers" shows.

  3. The Bills should really consider going after Mcnabb. If we were lucky enough to land McNabb we would instantly become a serious playoff contender.

PLAYOFFS??? PLAYOFFS??? Are you kidding me? PLAYOFFS?? Don't talk about PLAYOFFS!

(Maybe we should talk about PRACTICE ..... )

    :unsure:B-)

  4. Lots of talk lately about what sort of "incentives" it would take to make teams go all out to win all games at the end of the season when their playoff positions have already been determined. One idea is to reward the teams with the best records some extra draft picks. Just speculating about how that would work.

How many extra draft picks would have to be up for grabs to insure that all the teams participating in the playoffs would have a reason to go "all out" in all late season games? Would extra draft picks go to, say, the top 4 teams? The top 6? Or would it have to be something like "the best record(s) over the last 4 games of the season"? Or best points differential (PF-PA) over the last 4 games? Top team gets an extra pick at the end of the 1st round, 2nd team gets one at the end of the 2nd round, etc, and maybe extend that for the 1st 6 rounds? There would still have to be some sort of "tie breaker" rules. Teams like the Colts might still choose resting their players over trying to pick up an extra first day draft pick, but it's hard to imagine someone like Bill Polian not trying to get an extra 1st round pick if possible.

I like the idea, but am not sure how to structure it to make sure ALL teams always would have at least a difficult decision to make on whether it would be worth it to play all their starters in all their games to the bitter end.

What other sorts of incentives might be possible?

  5. It will always amazed me that our FO was sitting there on that faithfull day in the war room and agreed that Donte was the right pick. That is who the organization chose to rebuild the Bills. An effin safety.

And now we're already saying the same thing about Maybin.....

... at least there's always the hope that a new coaching staff will be able to salvage something out of the Maybin pick by turning him into a LB .

  6. From Tim Graham's most recent chat:

    Frank P (Mayor's Income, TN)

Tim, how much does poor conditioning regimens have to do with teams who experience more-than-average injuries?

I can't speak on that with any kind of expertise, but I do [know] that Bill Parcells believes strongly in that. Exactly what goes on in the weight room, I'm not sure. But the 2007 [season was] loaded with injuries, and one of the first things Parcells did when he was hired was get rid of the strength and conditioning coaches.

... so we know that "The Big Tuna" puts a lot of emphasis on S&C ....

  7. It has never been that way, you are thinking of baseball. The top two seeds get a bye, the third seed plays the lowest seeded wildcard and the 4th seed plays the top seeded wildcard.

You all must just be too young to remember.

    From Wikipedia:

... Originally, the home teams in the playoffs were decided based on a yearly rotation.[12] The league did not institute a seeding system for the playoffs until 1975, where the surviving clubs with the higher seeds were made the home teams for each playoff round.[5] Thus, the top seeded division winner played the wild card team, and the remaining two division winners played at the home stadium of the better seed. However, two teams from the same division could not meet prior to the conference championship game.[13] Thus, there would be times when the pairing in the Divisional Playoff Round would be the 1 seed vs. the 3 seed and 2 vs. 4.

Following an expansion of the regular season from 14 to 16 games in the 1978 season, the league added one more wild card team for each conference. The two wild card teams played the week before the division winners. The winner of this game played the top seeded division winner as was done from 1970–1977. The league continued to prohibit intra-divisional games in the Divisional Playoffs, but allowed such contests in the Wild Card Round.[14] This ten-team playoff format was used through the 1989 season.[11] Under this system, the Oakland Raiders became the first Wild Card team to win a Super Bowl following the 1980 season.[15]

    ...

For the 1990 season, a third wild card team for each conference was added, expanding the playoffs to twelve teams. The lowest-seeded division winner was then "demoted" to the wild card week. Also, the restrictions on intra-divisional games during the Divisional Playoffs were removed.[13] This format continued until the 2002 expansion and reorganization into eight divisions. In this current format, as explained above, the 4 division winners and 2 wild cards are seeded 1–6, with the top 2 seeds receiving byes, and the highest seed in each round guaranteed to play the lowest seed. Also, seeds, not regular-season records, determine the home-field advantage. Thus, it is possible that a division champion could host a wild card playoff team that has a better win-loss record [11]; This is frequently the case when the number 4 seed hosts the number 5 seed.

  8. I would have been more impressed if he would have just knocked the ball down...instead of picking if off in the KC game.

im pretty sure it was fourth down...just knocking it down and we would have had better field position and not risked a potential fumble

I mean i understand why he went for the ball obviously, it was a gift and hes chasing a record

Yes, Byrd's INT did come on a 4th down play ... but the ball was snapped from the 21, the pass was tipped by Scott, Byrd intercepted at the 5, and returned it to the 23. Still, I understand your point - it would have been smarter for him just to knock it down. Do have to give Byrd credit for sliding to the ground untouched when he got back to the 20 yard line - he could have made more yards, but by then he remembered the most important thing was not to risk a fumble, and went to ground on his own.

The Hail Mary pass that Wilson intercepted in the end zone to end the game came on 2nd down.

  9. His problem is he's constantly trying to prove to everyone how much smarter he is than everyone else. He had the "perfect weapon" in Marshall Faulk in the Super Bowl against the Pats, but refused to take full advantage of that in order to show off his "Greatest Show on Turf" ... and it cost the Rams the Super Bowl. He under utilized Frank Gore in SF as well.

I hope the Bills pass on him.

  10. The Bills need LB help, and it sounds like Adalius Thomas is permanently in Belicheat's doghouse. He'll probably be either traded or cut this offseason. Anyone think he has enough left in the tank to consider trying to pick him up? My concern is that BB really is a pretty good judge of talent, and if he thought Thomas could still play at a high level, would probably not let him go. If the Bills did pick him up, though, I'm pretty sure he'd be highly motivated for at least 2 games a year! ;-)

  11. It's funny how many "Fitzgerald" references there are in this post. I know he hasn't done much to give you a reason to remember his name, but it's Fitzpatrick.

I even heard a couple of TV analysts call him "Fitzgerald" yesterday during various highlight shows. Dan Marino was one ... can't remember who the other one was.

  12. This is why we need a good GM first and foremost. As somone else said, ever "good" coach has had the benefit of a good front office. You can't win many games without also winning the talent battle.

... maybe we could get Floyd Reese and Jeff Fisher to reunite in Buffalo as a "combo package" ... hey, we can dream, can't we? ;-)

  13. Linky Thingy

Q: Is Mike Shanahan going to take the Bills' job or wait for more openings? I can see Dan Snyder giving more money to Shanahan because Washington is a better market than Buffalo.

    Greg in Ashburn, Va.

A: Shanahan will wait and odds favor him being a Redskin. You're right, Snyder isn't going to lose Shanahan to Ralph Wilson. The only worry you have is if jobs open in Houston or Dallas -- Shanahan might look at those two openings more favorably. There is no damage in Shanahan talking to the Bills. He's a Redskin unless the eyes of Texas are upon him.

  14. I would be happy if the Bills hired Floyd Reese as GM and let him pick the next coach. If he chooses to keep Fewell (and is not forced to do so), I would be on board.

Of course, Reese was also "in charge" when the Titans drafted Adam "Pacman" Jones, and also pulled the trigger on the trade with the Bills for Travis Henry ... and we know how those decisions turned out. Hopefully, he's learned his lesson, and now knows that character DOES matter as much as talent.
