  1. If foreigners threatened to stop buying GSE debt, the Fed acted not out of fear of the dollar getting dumped, but cutting off the last supply of liquidity to the housing market. Foreigners probably said no to more GSE debt because they got tired of the declining values of those bonds. It would be economic suicide for other central banks to start dumping the dollar now.

What always gets lost in this discussion is the value of the asset. The asset, buildings (either commercial, industrial, or residential) never goes away until obsolence or barring a significant disaster. The value of said assets may fluctuate, but it is still a hard good - and theerfore somewhat permanent.

I thoroughly believe in the free market - supply & demand and hard assets (structues of any sort ) matter

How they are financed can & does lead to the current mess (like it has never happened before) :nana:

  2. I'm not sure I get all the hysteria. I lived on the coast of Florida for a few years and dealt with multiple hurricanes in the 2-3 category range. It was pretty intense, and at times scary, but all this "certain death" talk they are playing up on the news seems like a bit of a stretch. What is so big about this cat 2 hurricane?

24/7 media need something to hype

I just can't believe the morons (aka interns) that the networks get to stand out in the blow - reporting ??

The one dude kept holding that microphone cord - I doubt he was grounded - Darwin material right there (LIGHTNING STRIKE ANYONE ?)

  3. Thank the speculators.

Just as many speculators are betting "up" as "down" - a whirly storm in the Gulf is just a betting excuse.

Katrina did not bring the nation to a standstill - and IKE won't either

How about drilling off Santa Barbara - where those storms don't seem to occur ?

The crude oil just seeps out of the fractured sea bed there - today like yesteryear

  4. So, I just waited in line 10 minutes to get gas. The two guys in front of me almost got into a fight over who was there first. Every station I passed was backed up... and I paid 30 cents more than I did last time I filled up.

Seriously... what the hell? Are we going to do this every damn time a hurricane shows up? Had the same gas lines when Katrina hit the gulf.

Go at 6 - 7 am in the morning - no line

My wife just got back from Norway - rental cars are $100 a day and gas at over $10/gal (convetred from litres) - careful what you wish for

  5. That's the point. Obama has been in the national spotlight, being vetted and tested every day for 19 months. We know all about him, warts and all, and what his policies would be on any number of topics. Biden and McCain are also known quantities. But now we're expected to make an informed decision on a person most knew nothing about in the next 60 days, while she is being tightly controlled and handled.

When did Obama get vetted ? That's not even a real word - depending on your dictionary

Could Obama get a security clearence according to current DOD standards ?

    Where was he born ??

  6. Interesting.....

Do you know much about their tailgating policies? A guy I know told me that there is no eating, drinking or smoking allowed, but I find it hard to believe this particular person. Is this true?

Aside from being full of Charger fans, the lots at Qualcomm are just like RWS - just about anything goes.

One funny difference - City of San Diego police patrol the lots, telling all the underage drinkers to spill out their booze

  7. I'm sure there were a number of devoted Ram fans in LA, but with the size LA is there should be a HUGE number of fans. NY/NJ has no problem supporting TWO teams. As I said, the Raiders left after winning a Super Bowl, Al Davis was very disillusioned with the LA market.

The "huge" number of fans you allude to - forget to show up on Sunday - too many distractions

Even the Chargers, with their smallish stadium, "rabid" fan base and a pretty good team has trouble selling out.

Yes, I know, they sold out season tickets last season, but game day tickets were selling for less than face on E-Bay and other services

The SOCAL Fan is way too fickle

  8. Ten to fifteen years ago, or so, this news would have brightened my day.

Not today, though. Today, Toronto is the Great Beast in the saga of our beloved Bills.

Further, does anyone have any detailed information regarding the deal recently struck between USC and the LA Colesium? I'm under the impression that (a) there are going to be massive upgrades to the stadium, making it worthwhile of both USC and an NFL team and (b) USC retains some sort of refusal rights to keep a team from said stadium. Details, anyone?

I don't see ANY team being moved to LA, unless Al Davis wants to get crazy one more time...

Aside from the misquided whinings of LA politicians, the only "remodel" that the Colisuem should get is between 700 - 800 lbs of 40% commercial grade demolition explosive - the rest has already crumbled by itself

Toronto is just a sideshow - the "Dome" is not an NFL stadium - never was - never will be

  9. You're nuts to leave the country in these troubled times, not to mention tossing your bucks to foreign economies.

Unless you are on a cruise ship or a recognized tour to American tourist hot spots - no one should venture into Mexico on their own. Even 20+ year surfers on the West Coast are swearing off Baja - the drug gangs/police are too hard to tell apart.

There are open day shoot outs in TJ and other border cities between factions. Robberies and worse are rampant and tourists are caught in the middle

There are plenty of other (safer) places to spend your money - the Mexican tourist people try to supress the news - but it happens all the time

  10. Saw it today.

Very good movie, a lot better than I was expecting.

Jon Favreau put together a good piece of work. Good developed characters, good amount of humor, good storyline, and did not overdo it with special effects.

Robert Downey Jr, looks like he was born to play this role. He was fantastic.

Is it just me or did Jeff Bridges look like John Malkovich?

I am not a comic book aficionado, so the only things I knew about Iron Man were, his real name was Tony Stark, and that he had a cool suit. And the suit looks awesome, just like the comic book.

I stayed until the end of the credits. Nice.

I saw the movie today - I was really conflicted about seeing it, being a childhood fan from the 70's (and have 200 Iron Man comics in the garage), but the critics gave it thumbs  so I spent my $8 - beginning was excellent - ending tailed off. I know they can only explain so much in 2.0 hrs. The FX are geared to a different generation.

I expected more and went away wanting. The comic book Tony Stark was/is an immensely complex character - Jim Rhodes will probably be explained in #2

So far, from all the Marvel Movies, Spidey II and FF II (Sivler Surfer) show the character development

    Now, I see Hellboy II is coming - # 1 was :D - #2 is eagerly anticated

  11. They predicted a wet winter here in southern CA and we're in the middle of maybe the driest ever on record. Good job guys. :D

Last year's Atlantic hurricane prediction turned into post mortem mush - as most hurricanes turned out to sea - Las Vegas should throw these on the futures board.

Anyone here who was alive in the 60's saw predictions of the "Next Ice Age" - some of them (sic) Buffalo winters back then - gave those predictions some credence.

Old axiom: Climate is what you predict - weather is what you get :D

When was that first weather satellite launched anyway ? Unless Jules Verne left one in orbit on his way to the moon (1870) it would seem that modern (or retired )scientists have only 40+ years of recorded obeservations from space and not some thermometer stuck in a snowbank outside Uncle Uri's yurt since the last time the camp moved on.

  12. Imus deserves to be fired simply for validating Al Sharpton by going on his program.

Imus deserves to be fired for not retorting with "Hypocritical Ass-holes" when Sharpton confrontationally asked him "What do you mean by 'you people'?"

But mostly Imus deserves to be fired for criticizing how anyone else looks, when he's the only rich man on this planet who actually looks like he's partied harder than Keith Fukkin' Richards.

Every time I think someone is not paying attention -= AD is there - we must party again ! :D

  13. What Imus said was stupid and unfortunate, but he shouldn't be strung up for it. He appologized for it and he'll be suspended for 2 weeks - why do Al and Jesse insist on his being fired?

I'm also ticked that these two are the ones screaming for blood, as if they come from pure backgrounds. Anyone recall Jesse referring to NYC as "Hymie Town" in 1988? Anyone recall Sharpton defamed Steven Pagones in the whole Tawana Brawley circus, was found guilty in a civil case and to this day has never said he was sorry for the pain he caused with his false accusations? Why do these jokers get to make decisions about who gets to keep their job over some stupid words?

When we were growing up, it was "sticks and stones" - but you were never allowed to bring in mothers :D

Grow some thicker skin - what a bunch of hypocrites

  14. Scuttlebutt is they sent them a VHS copy of "The Day After". Apparently this happened the day following the taking of the hostages. Then the West realized they also had to send them a VHS. Then a TV. Then a coaxial cable. Then a technician to hook the stuff up. He requested a generator. That's actually why it took so long.

At least they had gas for the generator. We're still waiting to hear from the technician.

    ROTFLMAO

You forgot that it was captioned in Farsi by an Chinese bootlegger :wallbash:

  15. Someone said that there will quite a few RB's next year in the draft.

SD might let him go this year for maximum return; cheap like a 2nd draft pick this year and 3rd next year.

How did he play, how many games did you see, and what do you feel is his value in draft pick(s)?

As others have noted, Turner is a strong, tough runner - he just hasn't been exposed to an everyday load. When , I've seen him run, he looks very good.

    157 touches in 3 years ? http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6913

  16. I really like the part under "Doberman" that stated "a miniature pinscher joined two pitbulls in a mauling". Miniature Pinschers have nothing to do with Dobermans, they existed LONG before the Doberman breed was created. The problem is the word "Pinscher", which is German for "terrier".

I'm pretty tired of the ridiculous "turn on their owner" thing, as well as "their brains continue to grow and later in life it outgrows their skull, causing them to go crazy". Urban legends.

Sorry Darin - it does happen. I have friends whose 12 year Dolberman went ahead and just attacked - THEM ! In their house !

The police ended it with a bullet and the couple were injured (not too bad) - no urban legend there

  17. I agree... But then again, you know we are being killjoys Chef...

My wife is always impressed when she finds someone with the same birthday... Doesn't matter who in the group it is... If they have the same month and date, she gets all in a lather how great and odd that is... Makes we want to puke!... I tell her that the probabilty is almost one if you take a group of 28 or so RANDOM people... She gets all mad and sez I am spoiling all the fun...

Man Rule #12(a) - Let her think that statistics are "magic"

    You better reread the book

  18. It probably is not that difficult because it sounds as if he did it twice in a row because the announcer says "one more time." Any time you can set something up for a trick shot it's not that impressive. Kind of like trick pool shots.

Exactly like pool shark tricks - they've practiced them endlessly - just to win a shot of Cuervo - hhmmpphh !

  19. I was clocked doing 52 in a 35. We were 1 mile from where we were going after an hours drive and the kids were screaming 'WHEN ARE WE GONNA BE THERE?!?!?!?' It opened up to 2 lanes and I must've unconsciously sped up...

The cop said he did me a favor and wrote it as not obeying a traffic device instead of speeding. He said it saved me points and $80, but they still want $120.

    And it was in Florida...

Take it out of the kid's allowance and tell them they aren't getting any points
