1. Cowher's played in four home championship games as a head coach, and the Steelers have yet to cover the point spread while going one and three. His MO as a coach has always been based primarily on bluster and emotion, but it has not served him well in his biggest battles. In this case, team preparation is going to serve him better than some bloodthirsty pregame speech.

Since opening day 2003, there has only been one game out of 35 that the Pats were soundly beaten in, and that was at Pittsburgh this past year. Pittsburgh has assembled a great team with a lot of depth and a lot of versatility on both sides of the ball. There's been a noticeable drop in bulletin board material this week when compared to 2002. This is going to be a huge challenge for the Patriots. Dillon and Branch aren't going to mean anything if the other 43 guys play like they did on Halloween.

I think Cowher was the coach of the year, and I think that his experience as the longest active head coach has been drawn upon this year very impressively. If he reverts to the fire breathing, jaw jutting leader of years' past and that leads him to make decisions on emotion rather than logic, he is much bigger trouble than he would be if he were to coach in the more even keeled style that he has employed all year.

It's going to be an outstanding game - I really can't wait.

2. You also have no idea what Henry's worth in a trade may or may not be.  Neither do I.  Neither do any of us.  Its ALL speculation at this point.

212988

Of course. I'm only expressing my opinion of what he is going to be worth, but I'm not attempting to speak for GM's supposedly "kicking themselves" to get this player.

Note that there is no place where the one source says what these teams are willing to trade for him. Perhaps they wish to offer a fifth round pick, which is what I'm suggesting he'll go for.

I just think that some posters are basing Henry's value on some evaluation like this - "if we can just get the other GMs to look at 2002 and 2003 while ignoring the fumbles and his blocking and the fact that he was benched this year and the fact that as soon as he was benched the Bills' started winning and if they never look at film..." This is Alice in Wonderland stuff.

3. McNabb can't do it all himself. Westbrook must have a big game, as well as the Philly Defense vs. Michael Vick.  Hey, Reid grabbed player control and built this team the way he wanted to.

If Atlanta wins, Reid becomes the biggest bridesmade Coach in history. He'll be hammered in the press, whether it's right or not. You can't go to 4 straight Conference Championship games and lose.

He BETTER win or the backlash will be intense..

212927

I don't think I've ever read one bad thing about Levy on here (and it would be very rare to read something bad about him somewhere else). I think history will be as kind to Reid even if they lose - it's tough to get your team to this game four years in a row.

He also has the TO excuse going for him in the aftermath - Reid made the necessary change to his team to get to the next level, but the guy unfortunately was injured at crunch time.

Personally I think Reid is the clear second best coach in the league right now behind BB. I would have argued for Fisher last year, but he dropped down in my estimation this season with all the late year trick plays, onside kicks and shenanigans.

4. Your Travis Henry evaluation is absurd. Donahoe has even gone on record that he isn't "giving" him away. This means he's either getting fair value (4th or 5th round is laughable) or he's going to keep him. Not every NFL team throws to it's runningback or are looking for multi-dimensional players for that matter. The Bills don't even throw to their runningbacks. :D

212834

It would make zero sense for Donahoe to go on record and say "we're giving him away." His job as a GM is to build up Henry as much as he can now so that he can get the best possible players on his franchise. I wouldn't read anything into that.

He might agree with your assessment that a fifth round pick is not enough, but I don't see the Bills getting any offers beyond a fifth/fourth conditional. There are severe fundamental flaws in Travis Henry's game and plenty of other ways to address the running back position.

You can set any price you want, but it means nothing unless you have a buyer. If the price is firmly a second round pick, I suspect he stays on the shelf through 2005. Bully to TD if he can convince someone otherwise, but I know if I were a GM I wouldn't trade for Henry under any circumstances.

5. Gotta disagree... I think the Pats win.

However, I was wondering when the last time a home team was the underdog in either conference Championship game...

Anyone?

212665

I'm thinking it was the Giants in 2000 Stevestojan. Minny was a 1 or 2 point favorite for that game.

6. 1) He cannot/will not block.

2) He cant even figure out simple pass patterns.

3) He has been known to cough up the football.

4) No breakaway speed.

5) Headcase, or at the very least severely intellectually challenged.

6) Terrible season in 05 where he had the job and lost it due to poor play.

7) Bad hands.

8) New habit of slipping on his ass on key plays, in front of truck sized holes.

9) RBs tend to NOT be the hardest players to find in the draft.

10) Superior free agent rbs out there.

Does this help?

212122

I think this is a good summary BINYC. I would add that the league seems to be evolving towards favoring multidimensional players (who in order to provide more than one dimension have to have a decent head on their shoulders). Henry does not play special teams nor would he be any use as a third down back. I still think the compensation for him is going to be a fifth/conditional fourth.

Bledsoe was sacked as many times in the 4 games (19, 0-4) that Henry started than the 12 (19, 9-3) that McGahee started.

link

That's going to show up on the film evaluators use to look at Henry, as well as his "performance" in that regard in 2002 and 2003.

7. Accept the facts HD.  Your team loses without Bledsoe coming in for Brady.  Period.

This is not a "fact." <_< This is your opinion on what would have happened.

When Bledsoe came in, Pittsburgh was using man coverage on the outside on Patten. It is definitely fair to say that Bledsoe threw a better deep out in 2002 than Brady did, and Brady hadn't used Patten at all during the game. Before Pittsburgh could adjust their coverage, Drew threw three straight balls to Patten - out, comeback, out and up for a TD. Good job by QB, receiver, and OC/coach for taking advantage of the change.

In the second half after Pittsburgh made its defensive adjustments in their coverage, Bledsoe was 7/18 for less than 70 yards. The offense generated three points. He had one moment which I thought was terrific (touch pass sideline route for a third down conversion), and two utterly horrifying moments (the "grenade" pass, the would-be INT-TD that bounced off a linebacker's chest).

Troy Brown was the clear MVP of the game. Bledsoe was at best adequate, but was in my opinion overmatched once Pittsburgh adjusted their coverage.

8. I was psyched that they beat Seattle because I think that that protects his job for another year.

The league is much better off having Martz in it. Think about how many times his arrogance combined with his poor decision making makes you smile during the year. The guy is priceless. St. Louis fans deserve better, but without any emotional attachment I say keep the guy in the league and the good times rollin'.

9. you think Miami can get a better deal with their 1st round pick than Henry and Bledsoe?

I'll admit, I'm not a fan of either one, but like it or not, they have pretty decent reputations around the league.

Give Miami what they need terribly, a QB and a RB  - not to mention two that know each other ... if i was the Dolphins, I think I'd give us a 1st for them, instead of possibly flowering*.

(*flowering: the act of picking a player like Erik Flowers in the 1st round of the NFL draft).

209211

Can't see Saban flowering - especially this year. Yes, they can get a better deal by simply making a pick.

10. I don't know what kinds of signing bonus or other bonuses Bruschi gets, but his base salary(see below) suggests New England is getting a bargain.  The guy always seems to make one or two big plays every game.

per nflpa.org....

2000 450000.00

2001 600000.00

2002 650000.00

2003 850000.00

2004 700000.00

2005 850000.00

2006 1350000.00

2007 1700000.00

209075

Well, that is important to know - he signed a bonus heavy contract.

His cap figure in 2004 is $2,247,268 - sixth highest paid player on the team.

12. Haven't you figured out AKC's modus operandi yet?

Anyone that says/does anything negative towards AKC's personal god = an idiot. Only AKC can see things clearly. Just ask him!

203651

Oh I figured it out long ago AG. There will be no surprise for me when I get a belligerent response sometime later, but it will be no bother coming from him. Par for the course. :P

13. The man largely responsible for the Patriots winning 2 SB's, primarily for helping them advance in the playoffs, won't be officiating this weekend's game against the Colts.  That's right, Walt "the 54th Patriot" Coleman and his crew won't be there to call "tuck" when it's a fumble, ignore 15 holding calls, say "just give it to 'em," or mistake a helmet for a football when crossing the goal-line.  I guess the Patriots' time is over.

:P

203524

More info from Mike Underwood in the 1/12/05 Boston Herald....

The Pats drew the crew headed by referee Bill Carollo, a group that is known as being decidedly average when it comes to throwing flags. Carollo's crew ranked 10th in the league (out of 18 crews) in penalties accepted and total penalty yardage. What's more, the three types of penalties in which they led the NFL (defensive offsides, delay of game and illegal shift), are all pre-snap calls.

Meanwhile, Pats coach Bill Belichick [news] scouts officiating crews just like he scouts opposing teams. If some obvious trend jumps out at him, he makes a point to pass it along to his players.
14. About 4 months ago I  posted I had lost about 30 lbs...

I am here to announce that about 9 months after starting to RUN nightly that I am past the 60 lb mark ( 63 to be exact ).

This is what I have found out so far:

Fad diets are a WASTE .  Cut down your damn portions and you can still enjoy pizza, ice cream, etc.  I did stop Mc. D's and the like all together.. YUCK ..SHHITT food.

Exercise is a MUST - I started walking about .5 miles a night. I kept building up speed, distance, then back to speed. I now run AT LEAST 3 miles a night, 5-6 days a week.  I run in the snow, wind , rain, everything!  When the weather breaks I will go back to my routine of 6 miles x 6 days a week.  I can do 3 miles in crap weather in about 32 minutes - 6 miles during good weather right at about an hour.

STOP DRINKING POP!!  I drank 5-8 Cokes/Pepsis a day.  I am down to 1 a day during dinner, 2 on the weekends.

Propel water by Gatorade - A life saver - Tastes GREAT and is on 20 calories for 16.9 OZ !

Get the BEST running shoes you possibly can.  I almost destroyed my joints the first few weeks before I discovered NIKE SHOX.  A PERFECT shoe for those of us that are heavy up top :P

Get a good MP3 player - I killed my first Rio now I have moved up to the Creative Zen Micro...I BLAST music while running so I don't think about what I am doing ;)  Mind over matter.

Anyways, my goal is 100 lbs and I plan to hit it late spring - I will post my before / after pictures :w00t:

Anways, I am off :(

203643

Talonz - that's awesome. Congratulations. You make a great point - you have to exercise and increase what you do over time to get further results (because your metabolism adjusts to your smaller frame).

I've lost 15 pounds in the last six months - I would like to lose five more over the next three, but regardless I feel better than I have in many years because of the better diet and exercise. Finding the time and discipline to commit to such a thing is hard but well worth it.

15. Ive been head over heels for this woman since last march, she is the most incredible woman I have ever met..When I first met her I didn't have the feelings I do now for her..She's funny, smart, down to earth, everything I could ever want in a woman..I came to her and told her how I felt finally in july..she then told me that she didn't see me that way and liked somebody else..Unfortunetly for me, that somebody else was a dirtbag pig who was a co-worker of ours..This guy's only intentions were to get in her pants and not her heart, what she saw in him I will never know..LUCKILY that fixation didn't last very long and she came to her senses and decided against starting a relationship with him thank god..In the mean time, this woman and I would talk everyday almost non-stop, about anything, life, weather, music, sports..Now if you dont like a person, why would you wanna talk to them all the time?? She's had one other boyfriend in her past and he was nothing more then a 2 bit drugie with a couple kids on the side..as I said before how she meets these guys I will never know..But its obvious the only guys she seems to be attracted to are a$$holes! it maybe thin, but I believe that she likes me, she likes the way I treat her, likes the way I remind her how amazing and beautiful she is, and likes everything else, she's just afraid to admit it..She's afraid to admit it because she's not use to such good treatment from a guy before..in the past month, I haven't talked to her at all, she has completely cut me off, the communication lines are severed..and I have done nothing but respected her space and left her alone..but the longer I leave her alone the more unsettling it gets to know that the woman Im falling for is there all by herself and not with me where she belongs..Its evident that she enjoyed our conversations and my company, if she didn't that she wouldn't have opened up to me like she did..In my opinion she's a very confused woman right now, who doesn't know how it feels to be loved, and ive reminded her time and time again that she should give me a shot..Im not the best lookin, or the best drest, not rich or drive a fancy car..but im the best fit for her..at least I Think so, and I hope she does too..

any words of wisdom??    :P  ;)  :w00t:

203515

Hey STB - unfortunately I have to agree with those who are telling you to move on. I know this stinks.

I've known lots of guys who pursue relationships because ostensibly they want to "save" the woman (same goes for many women as well). I know none that have actually worked out, and most ended disasterously. I've done the same once or twice in my time as well - never again. Ultimately, you owe it to yourself to be with someone who gives back equally what you put into the relationship.

16. At the same time with divisional rivals I always want to look for the wrinkles in the armor of the enemy, and since the football chinks for Belichick are so subtle it's intriguing watching his continued problems with his players on a personal level.

Tom Jackson tried expounding upon the same theory last year, and ended up looking pretty foolish when that "troubled" locker room then rattled off 17 of 18. Rodney Harrison's comments at the time were as follows:

"I respect Tom Jackson, but that is one of the stupidest things I ever heard," Patriots safety Rodney Harrison said Monday. "He has no idea what we think about Belichick."

If Tom Jackson has no idea, where does that leave you? :P

Seriously AKC - he's been in the league for 30+ years, has four rings and is the consensus best coach in the NFL. If he really had severe problems getting along with people, Belichick could never have gotten to where he is.

17. I just went to the following link: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/wr.php

This site ranks receivers based on a number of factors, taking into account dropped passes, fumbles, TDs, total yards, the quality of the defense, etc. Lee Evans ranked 14th in the NFL. Eric Moulds ranked 45th. Did I mention Moulds is scheduled to count $8.7 million against next year's cap?

201126

I buy their team rankings more than these rankings. In the team rankings, you're comparing 11 on 11 so it is always fair. In these rankings, you see receivers who attract automatic double teams like Chad Johnson, Harrison and perhaps Moulds get short shrift to the #2 guys who get single coverage because of the #1 guys' abilities.

I don't think I have seen anyone yet claim that the Bills should bring Moulds back at his current salary. He's definitely overpaid, and there is no chance he could ever get close to 8.7 on the open market (half that might be a stretch) considering where he is in his career.

On the other hand, if you can get him down to his market value, I think he's the type of player that you attempt to keep. Ultimately that will be the offseason argument with Moulds - keeping him at 8.7 just won't happen.

18. Coach Tuesday is killing AKC on this one. The refs should have stopped it two pages ago.

I think the confusion stems from AKC's childhood. Back then, he and his older brother used to do "guy" things together that included watching sports like football and stag movies. At that time, AKC's older brother wisely advised him "to stop watching the ball" during one of the two activities - he still gets which one confused to this very day.

I look forward to my pithy one line insult reply that ends in an exclamation point!

19. If he spends most of the off-season in Montana, he knows he's done.

197932

He always goes to Montana. He even skipped the parade in 2002. I'd actually believe the opposite - if he stayed around all offseason, it would be an admission that he can't coast on his arm anymore and needs to work on the preparatory portion of his game. It wouldn't be an admission that he is done, but perhaps that he recognizes he is getting along in NFL years.
