  1. Mike Williams had better experience as a DC when he was hired by the Bills than Garratt does right now. In fact you probably could make the same arguement for MM too when he was brought in. Garrett may be good, but if so he'd be bucking the odds as more great coordinators look terrible as coaches, particuarly in their first HC opportunities. There have been some first time successes; Cowler, Parsells come to mind, but many more failures. Also seems like these days there are becoming less successes than years back. In the past ten years, what coordinators became good head coaches in their first job?

  2. The problem is any poster on this board would suit up for the Bills next week for free for "The love of the Game". Pro atletes don't have that feeling. Everyone today laughs and jokes on the sideline while down by 20. The only time you see real emotion is when a team gets knocked out of the playoffs.

Maybe the difference is today all the way down to Little League, Pop Warner, it's stressed that winning doesn't matter. Many youth leagues don't even keep score anymore. So maybe this is just partly a product of that generation now playing professionally

  3. So who would you suggest instead? (unless you're serious about the advantages of the Bills not being in the playoffs) The bills have two choices, bring in some young no name who does actually have the ability to be a huge sucess in their first go around as a HC. Cowler, Gruden, Parsells are a couple of names that come to mind that succeeded in their fist HC job. But many others failed including none other than Belichick. Can also add to the list: DJ (with the Bears) MW MM both here, Pete Caroll, and a whole string of others. So you can take a chance on getting that special someone, but the odds are against you.

The other option is to bring in an experienced guy. Considering RW hasa reputation as a meddling owner who doesn't like paying coaches much money, I think Marty may be about the highest profile guy you'd ever be able to hire here. And that's assuming he does deep down want to coach. If as mentioned he really is done, then likely the amount of money RW would offer won't get him to change his mind

Regarding the meddling rumors, people have brought up Jerry Jones, and Dan Syder as arguments that coaches don't all hate meddling owners. The difference there is, you don't mind a meddler who pays you top $$ and who always has his checkbook in his hand ready to sign a check for whatever you need. Unless it's for a charity (which can't knock him there) RW seems to ask how can we do without this expense?

Pardon me but why in the hell would you want Marty "I've never won a game that mattered" Schottenheimer? So he gets you to the playoff's only to lose there in front of the entire nation, instead of just the home town audience....what's the point? I guess maybe to sell tickets and suck people into the lie?

It's nice in November to not have to think about when the Bills will get knocked out of the playoffs - sure the SB years were fun until the actual SB started....then it felt like sh_t until the next year....this way, the Bills go the way of the other 20 teams that don't make the playoffs, we all get an extra three hours back on Sundays...it's a win win...

  4. I agree it would be somewhat surprising for RW to pay off three years on a contract. However in most cases the fired coach gets hired by some other team and then RW is only on the hook for the difference between his salary as a Bill and the new teams contract. In this case RW being cheap helps as another team may pay DJ close to the same salary to be DC or DB coach, so won't be the full shot.

Would DJ get a coaching offer. Most likely he would as he likely may be one of the many who are good coordinators and position coaches but bad HC. Also these guys love to coach so for him to sit out three years would be too much for him and after three years, he'd become somewhat forgotton. I doubt he'd ever get a job on TV as he doesn't exactly have the personality for that.

IF Ralph SIGNED him to a three year extension then he will NOT be FIRED because RALPH does not believe in paying coaches not to coach.
  5. Yeah but this gives people the ability to argue that they were right about whichever one they said would be good. It's all about proving they were right, nothing else matters.

And BTW, I don't think this really is anything unique to Bills fans. Every message board around sufferes from the same thing of people needing to prove themselves smarter than everyone else. When you factor in a sports theme and add plenty of testostorone, it's a recipe for a fight. One of these days you'll read a headline on the news about someone killing somebody about a disagreement on a message board. Doubt it will happen here as as bad as it is, people in western NY still are good people at heart. I'd place my money on California.

Only Bills fans actually fight continually over 2 players ON THE SAME TEAM, not to mention the fans favorite team. Route for the guy in the game and until he is no longer on the team.
  6. And how do you know this to be true?? Granted he didn't play a good first half, which may have been due to an injury. But they still were only ten points behind and should have been less, so hard to believe he'd bench TE who had no int's.

It may likely have been a minor thing and TE would tell you he could have played through it. However he did miss abunch of passes so maybe DJ felt was do to him favoring it, so yanked him. No idea, but also no that no one has any idea that it was faked either.

Saying that Trent had any type of injury is an insult to the fans, the media, and everyone involved with this team. I'd rather DJ call out Edwards and say that this will continue to happen until he gets better. He did this last year, too. Terrible way of handling this situation.

It will be interesting to see if Trent is truthful about his "injury" in the postgame sessions. We all know that Jauron used the injury card so that he couldn't get called out if and when Losman sucked in the second half (and/or to salve TE's brittle psyche for getting pulled). I'm not buying it and no one else should either. Horrific decision all around. Like him or not, Trent is the future of the franchise at QB, so benching him does him no good confidence-wise. If Losman had done well, what then? Ride the hot hand as far as he'll take you (not likely to be the playoffs), watch him leave in FA and then go back to the guy you've dumped? Complete crap all around--what a f-ing joke.....

My "auto response" on this point....

  7. If Hardy figures it out by next seaosn, you may have that person there. The one other offensive need is a top notch center.

Royal is a playmaker? Thats the funniest thing I have heard in a long time. When he gets the ball...I hold my breath and hope he doesnt do something stupid like he usually does. This is a team with the Dicky J stamp.
  8. It's only guaranteed as long as DJ doesn't get hired by another team. If he gets hired by someone then RW is only on the hook for the difference between what his contract in Buffalo paid and what he's making elsewhere. In that respect RW's being cheap helps him as if he were to go to another team as say a coordinator, it may pay close to what he was getting here in Bufflao as the HC.

    Coach's contracts are guaranteed.
  9. Had to read your post twice as I thought the last word was extention. Only a couple letters apart.

The question I have is did DJ sign an extension or not?? If so I just cna't see RW eating the entire thing, though he sometimes does have a boiling point that this season may have gone beyond. I also do think he listens more to the fans than we realize, and know's if he brings back DJ he'll have a tough time selling tickets. That being said, I'd be surprised if he cans him IF they did sign an extension.

Regarding the list of potential people to bring in. What has Jason Garrett done that either Greg Williams or Mike Mularky didn't do when they arrived in Buffalo? I think Williams even had more years as a top coordinator than JG has at this point.

A press conference should be called at 1 bills drive tomorrow to announce his execution.
  10. JP has five times the physical potential that TE has. I will grant you that. But beyond that he's shown nothing. From the mental part of the game he's never even come close to TE on TE's better games. I don't think anyone is stating TE is the savior because of potental, but you'd be a fool not to give him adequate time to develop to determine if he has potential or not. TE has looked brilliant in some games and terrible in others. Though even the Jets and Miami game I really can't fault TE totally as there was absolutely no other offense that entire game besides what he did, both good and bad. And yes "JP has had his share of comebacks and nice throws" but it was never really part of a brilliant game that I recall. He'd have some great throws, but still look weak two plays later. I think the best game I saw JP play from start to finish was last year against the Bengals. Maybe the Miami game where he had the three bombs to Evans, but they still lost and other points in the game didn't look that great from what I recall.

One or two years from now TE may still look the same, great one week terrible the next, and if so then you know you need to move on there too. But I'd be awful reluctant to give up on a guy that has in some games looked as well as he has. You need to determine beyond a shadow of a doubt whether that potential can be turned to consistancy or not. And anyone who claims to know TE or any other QB will or won't be good is full of crap as if you really had those answers you wouldn't be posting on this board but be working for some NFL or college team. If you predict he'll fail the odds are in your favor of being right as many more QB's fail than succeed.

Then you're a blatant hypocrite if you're going off potential. Potential??? Give me a break. JP has five times the "potential" Trent could ever dream of. Doesn't make him the right fit for Buffalo though.

I think either both quarterbacks are awful, or the offensive coaches have no idea how to cater to their respective talents. Whichever is the case, the flash of brilliance that Trent showed means nothing when compared to his slump to end all slumps.

On the other hand you have JP who has had his share of comebacks and nice throws, but never 4 games in a row. Regardless the discussion is null and void when you pretend Trent is the savior due to potential. That's bullsh*t.

  11. Yes it was debatable as to who looked better, however it was kind of comical as JP looked the same as he always has. Usually a backup can be somewhat effective as you game planned for the starter, now the D has to change gears a bit. I actually thought JP played well in the Az game as a backup, but not good enough to generate any kind of big contract in the off season. Todays play though I think definitely cost him money as he was as bad as he ever has been. He proved he's nothing better than a back up. Before today I would have argued that he has a change to go to some team that needs a QB and compete for the #1 job in the pre-season. After this showing, I doubt any team would even give him that much. Maybe compete as the #3 going into camp with all three viing for #1, or possibley a solid backup role? I think todays showing proves that it wasn't that he got a bad shake from the Bill's, but it was deserved. What you saw today was JP at his best.

And BTW, I was a former JP defender

JP doesn't throw a pass since the Arizona game, he doesn't take 1st team reps in practice and yet idiots expect him to be perfect. Trent plays every game, takes all the 1st team reps in practice and yet it was debatable who the better QB was today.
  12. What do you mean?? Does someone like the FAA monitor the shows and can pull them for being uncoopertative or something? I'd certainly assume they could get fired if their ratings get low, and/or sponsors pull the plug on them.

I reca ll when he was an up anc coming star, thoughts were he'd be on ESPN soon. Maybe that's his problem, he's just become a bitter, fading, never was who's stuck in Buffalo and has a wife that makes more money and is likely smarter than him.

Keep in mind that these guys don't want to get their credentials pulled.
  13. No I didn't expect perfection. However it was kind of comical as JP looked the same as he always has. Usually a back can be somewhat effective as you game planned for the starter, now the D has to change gears a bit. I actually thought he played well in the Az game as a backup, but not good enough to generate any kind of big contract in the off season. Hasn't thrown a pass since the Arizona game, doesn't get 1st team reps in practice what do you expect? Perfection. C'mon your kidding yourself if you think the backup was going to lead this pathetic team to victory.
  14. I agree that's the question. Did he sign an extension as if he did, I just can't see RW eating the entire thing.

Here's a thought, knowing RW, he sometimes does like to pull a fast one. Did DJ and RW agree on an extension, got all the details ironed out, DJ signs it, gets faxed to the Bills for RW to sign. RW sits on it, figures wait till after the upcoming game, they lose, so then RW figures lets wait another week, they lose the next three, RW now tell's DJ, geee I can't find the contract you sent me, sorry.

I mean RW did agree to an extension at the end of the year with JK back in what 1996, but then JK played terrible the rest of year and RW didn't sign the extension. Notthat I disagreed with RW in that situation as JK did play terrible his last year.

Well now I wonder if Dick really did sign that extension. If not he is gone.
  15. The ref never said it went beyond the LOS, he stated it was near the LOS and according to him, that's good enough per the rule. By challanging you can't force the official to pull out a rule book and read it to verify that he got the rule correct. That's not the purpose of challanging. It likely wil lbe one of these things that comes out around Thursday that the offical was incorrect but it won't change anything during the game.

Simple. Where did the ball land? You don't challenge the ref's idiocy, you challenge the placement of the ball, because you know the rule.
  16. When you challange a call you're asking the officals to review the video of the play to determine what really happened. You're not asking them to read the rule book. It sounds like from what others are saying, the ref blew it by not knowing the rule, however I doubt a ruling can be changed via a challange becasue a ref interpeted a rule incorrectly. It's there for the purpose of correcting things that were not seen corrrectly due to speed of play.

In some other sports, a misinterpetation of a rule (which sounds like this may have been) can be protested, but I don't think there's a protest process during the middle of an NFL game.

Does the rule really say the word "NEAR" in it???????????????? !@#$ing for real?
  17. Well the only difference will be the names of the posters as the same thing happened with TE playing.

It's all part of being right. If you were a supporter of TE for every bad pass that TE makes, it helps prove you're right and smarter than everyone else so you're going to post. Conversely if you stated JP sucks, for every bad pass he makes, it will help prove those people are smarter.

That's the thing that matters most, looking like you really are smart!

now every pass JP misses....everyone will say horrible throw..
  18. I can't recall a team ever tagging a backup player. Cassell could sign the tender, then NE is on the hook for paying a backup top 5 of all QB salaries. People throw these franchise tags around like they are candy. Many are suggesting franchise Greer. He's doing well, but again not worth top 5 money and if I were Greer, if the Bills tag him, I'd sign the tag in a second as I doubt he'd ever come lose to that as a FA. Same with Cassell, though he may be reluctant to stick around another year as a backup.

I think the Lions will exchange 1st round picks with the Patriots for the right to sign Matt Cassell after the Patriots slap the franchise tag on him.
  19. The problem is though how do you know who's going to be good?? Dallas was expected to be a Super Bowl contender and they likely still are a contender. Seattle won the west last year and was expected to probably win the division again, but they fell apart. So last April you knew Tenn-Detroit could be two struggling teams, in the end Tenn was good. But you'd have thought Dallas-Seattle would be a good game. The only way I see to improve it is to pick the teams/game about a month prior to the date, maybe Nov 1st. But that's tough on a team to tell them Nov 1st, they are playing on a Thursday instead of a Sunday, and tough for the people who bought tickets. It's one thing to change from 1:00 to 4:00 or even 8:00, but to change the date by three days would be tough.

Perhaps its time for the Thanksgiving Games to rotate. Perhaps schedule rematches with division or wild card games from teh previous year.

The Lions being mauled will never be a worthy T-day tradition.

  20. After a safety the team kicking off has the option of a punt OR a traditional kickoff. 9 of 10 times they punt as it has more hang time. That is why they cal lit a free kick as the kciking team has a choice.

There is a bit of confusion here between the terminology. After a safety, the team that was scored upon must kick off the ball with a punt, instead of off the tee. This is called a free kick.

Actually it only works IF there is time left on the clock. If you punt and time expires, the half or game is over. In 40 something years of watching football, I've seen it happen about three times, but missed it today. I've only seen it happen at the half, and don't think I've ever seen anyone actually make the kick. As was described, the team who makes the fair catch can try a field goal without a rush from the spot of air catch. With no rush, maybe the guy can kick it 60 possibly 70 yards or so. Realistically the team will only attempt it if there are only a few seconds left in half, as if there's more time left, they'd attempt to run a play or two. Usually the team has no time outs left, again else they may try and run a play. It also usually would only work out if the team who punted, punted from deep in their own territory. Say they punted from the 5, he makes a 50 yard punt, so you fair catch at your own 45, that leaves you with a 65 yard attempt. If the punt was from out much further, say the 20, even a 40 yard punt would leave you with a 70 yard attempt, so unlikely to attempt. At that point, you'd figure odds are better for a Hail Mary, and/or defenseive penalty.

You really need to end up in a situation where there's not enough time to likely get into better field goal range without running out of time. Again say a fair catch from your own 45 with five seconds to go. Thats a good spot to try as to get into better conventional field goal range, you probably would need to gain 20 yards. With only five seconds to go, it's unlikey there'd be enough time to gain the 20, plus have time for the kick.

Actually there was some game just last week, where I thought it was going to happen. The player took a fair catch and the announcers were all over for fair catching, when he probably had a good 15 yards of running room. My guess is he was instructed to take a fair catch so they could try the free kick. Forget what happened next, but the free kick was never tried. I almosthought it was Parrish in the Cleveland game?? Know it was some game I watched last week.

At the end of a half, if the offensive team punts the ball as time expires, the returning team can fair catch the ball. At the conclusion of that play, they have a free play to attempt a FG (or quite possibly a Hail Mary, but do not quote me on anything inside the parenthesis here). A free play also can occur with a defensive penalty as time expires. On a free play, it is an untimed down.
