I worry about RT, both starter and depth, but I have to admit that I really like the rest of this OL.
Bills have the following guys locked down for multiple years:
-McGovern (OG)
-Torrence (OG)
-Bates (OG/C)
-Anderson (OG/C/RT)
-Van Demark (LT)
-Dawkins (LT)
-Brown (RT)
All guys that are solid and/or with upside.
Very happy that it seems the FO is done with the band-aid veteran options being brought in to protect Josh Allen.
I'm sure I'm in the minority here but IMO there's some really good young talent in this position group. One more good offseason and this unit could become a team strength. Specifically I think some of the backups have starting potential.

It was pathetic.
Then what happened? 🙃

So since the inception of this topic:
- Quess was signed by Minnesota... guess we'll never know if the Bills would have offered him a spot on the practice squad.
- Germain Ifedi was signed by the Bills. Pretty solid pickup... based solely on credentials lateral or better than Brandon Shell.
- Nick Broeker was signed by Houston. Lots of people here (myself included) liked Broeker and I believe the Bills did too. There were just too many good young talents ahead of him like Torrence, Edwards, Van Demark, and Alec Anderson.
I'm liking this offensive line but still holding my breath that Dawkins and Brown don't let us down.

Sounds like a distinction without a difference.
It all falls under the broader category of "financial aid."

I think McBeane's philosophy about the position has evolved since drafting Edmunds. They were running the team with the memory of Keuchle fresh in their minds.
But it's very simple. If they thought in 2022 and 2023 that middle linebacker was the linchpin in the defense, they would have done something to keep Edmunds or get a high-end replacement. So far as we can tell, they didn't try at all.
I think what they learned from Edmunds, is that they can have a very good defense without an All-Pro middle linebacker. Look at the cap room they spent on Miller, Oliver, and Floyd. There simply can be no question that they believe the game can be played best with talent on the defensive line and less talent at middle linebacker. Look at the money they spent to re-sign White and keep Poyer, and the draft capital they spent on Elam.
Beane consciously spent more or less nothing on a middle linebacker. He told us that in his presser. I don't think there's any question that they're thinking about the defense has evolved since they traded up for Edmunds.
Good post. I believe that they thought Edmunds might be a transcendent player (meaning transcending his positional value) and along with the prior experience with Luke Kuechly caused McBeane to depart from their value chart and draft Edmunds highly.
He proved not to be a trandscendent player.
8 hours ago, Coach Tuesday said:And yet - they just signed a street FA in the hopes that he will step into that role by early season. And cut outright the guy who was taking starter's reps in the preseason.
Hope is not a plan.
Actually hope is often a plan. Every team has roster holes and every team has a position or two where they pin their hopes on a player(s) rising to the occasion and growing into the job. In this case the Bills pinned their hopes on 3 young veterans (Dodson, Bernard, and Spector).
It didn't work out partly due to 2 of the players getting injured.
6 hours ago, Nephilim17 said:I agree that recent evidence shows the McBeane don't think that in a passing league MLB is a priority position.
But perhaps they had the same or a similar view when they drafted Edmunds but were hoping with his height, reach and speed he could be a unicorn MLB and be a vital asset on the D for the short passing game. But he really wasn't.
And now they figure most, if not all MLBs, aren't really a force against passing teams so that's why it's no longer a priority worth much more than low-third-round picks.
Exactly... a transcendent player... a unicorn.

Agreed.
3 hours ago, BillsFanForever19 said:The Dorian Williams pick is a head scratcher to everyone because everyone was singularly focused on the MLB position. But we also had a need at OLB.
The fact is that outside of Matt Milano, we had ZERO OLB's on the roster. So while the MLB's we had were underwhelming, our LB core consisted of 4 MLB's in competition (Bernard, Dodson, Klein, Spector), 1 OLB (Milano), and a Special Teams player who is only technically a LB (Matakevitch).
In Rounds 1 & 2, they valued getting a weapon and a starting Offensive Lineman over the MLB position, especially with what was on the board at both picks.
When Round 3 started, there were 3 MLB's that could have theoretically pushed Bernard and Dodson and maybe won the job in Drew Sanders, Trenton Simpson, and Daiyan Henley. After them was a MASSIVE drop off in talent in which they felt probably wouldn't be able to compete and would be a reach.
All 3 guys got drafted by pick 86. At that point, MLB was out. So looking at the roster, with no MLB on the board left they felt could challenge Dodson, Bernard, and Klein in Year 1, and having taken care of the last weapon and the last piece of the OL - what was the only real hole left on the roster?
An OLB behind Milano.
Milano has stayed relatively healthy. But when he's needed a breather or some time, to this point we've had an insane drop off there when he isn't in the lineup. And going into this season, we literally had nothing. Now in Williams, perhaps we have a player that can keep things rolling when Milano needs a breather or God forbid gets hurt.
Long story short, Williams was drafted as an OLB. Everyone is confused by it because our MLB's are pedestrian and we were focused on that position. But OLB was a need and that's what he was Drafted for.
Excellent post. I agree with all of this except I believe the Bills (my guess) will slowly cross train him at MLB as he becomes more familiar with the scheme. You want your best players on the field as much as possible and it won't be long before Williams is the second best LB on the Bills, IMO.

I just feel like he is a major piece to this team this year and I hope we can get him on paper somehow in the future. He is very valuable imo. It's really something we have him as our 4th DEnd. With 6.5 sacks last year in a limited roll that's impressive. He looks alot more confident this year too.

There are many alternate spellings but Epenesa is not one of them. It is possible the spell checker changed it to Espenosa.
So... he changed... his last name?

The opposite of what everybody thinks is true. First off, the rule that used to require Keenum to be on the Texans roster through week 6 (or whatever it was) is gone. He doesn't.
Secondly, and nobody knows this apparently but me, if a compensatory free agent is traded, he counts as a gained free agent against the team that trades for him, even if the team that trades for him is the same team that lost him. If the Bills trade for Keenum he cancels himself out in the formula, leaving us with 2 gained and 2 lost.
The only way the Bills will lose the 3rd round pick is if they trade for Keenum.

After that disastrous Lance pick and draft capital given up, how can Lynch / Peters possibly be ranked higher than Beane?
Especially with 2 page threads, you should read through before posting... so others don't have to repeat themselves.
The Niners starting QB Brock Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant... the 262nd and final pick of the 2022 draft.
Also the Niners have 8 players ranked in the NFL Network's Top 100 players, most in the league.
Knowledgeable league followers don't question what a great job Lynch/Shanahan have done building that roster.
The Trey Lance pick doesn't negate the rest of their work.
The five teams most commonly chosen to win the Super Bowl are the Chiefs, Eagles, Bengals, Niners, and Bills.

Another scenario is that Beane trades a fringe player for a draft pick and then package draft picks for a player.
In the preseason, Beane has traded guys like Cardale Jones, Kevon Seymour, AJ McCarron, Marshall Newhouse, Wyatt Teller, Russell Bodine, Darryl Johnson, and Cody Ford.
He's better than most GMs at getting picks for players that aren't going to make the final roster.

I disagree with @BADOLBILZ comment that being a schyster is a better trait than integrity for a GM.
As an NFL GM you're gonna be dealing with the same people over and over. If they don't trust you they're not gonna do business with you. If they don't do business with you you're not gonna be effective in your job.

I'm going as far as I can after being defeated best of 3 falls by an exhaust manifold today. So, probably the 1st half for now. Ok, let's fire up the DVR.
Series 1 Defense : 50-92-91-55??
----------------
1st & 10) Handoff left. The entire Bills front moves the LOS back 3 yard, Oliver stops for no gain.
2nd & 10) Quick hitch to TE inc. No instant wins on the line, but Daquan was getting through.
3rd & 10) Chuck n hope to the left. Basham bull rush was getting some purchase. Rousseau doubled.Series 1 Offense : 73-76-60-64-79
----------------
1st & 10) Quick slant Davis is... dropped. Nothing much to report there.
2nd & 10) Little hitch right to Harty. Brown was singled on the edge #94 and held up.
3rd & 2) Pocket was folding but Diggs short cross for the 1st down.
1st & 10) 1st run to Cook. Weird blocking scheme, both Dawkins and Edwards run past #93 who makes the play behind the LOS.
2nd & 9) Play action dump off to Harty who twists Edmunds up. Whole line blocks down one way, play goes other. 100% misdirection.
3rd & 4) Quick slant to Diggs, unstoppable. Lines look good when you hold your block 1 second.
1st & 10) Handoff Cook over RG. Torrence and Brown open a hole for 6.
2nd & 4) Cook again to the same hole, same result. Torrence fires to the second level, Morse seals the nose and Brown turns the end.
1st & 10) More Cook over LG with lesser results. Dawkins & Edwards combo their guy and move him out but the LB's fill.
2nd & 😎 Quick out left to Dropthis. No major breakdowns there.
3rd & 😎 This is that "vintage Allen" scramble right. Morse did get trucked by the guy Torrence started out blocking and passed off.
1st & goal) Allen scrambled right for a loss. Pocket held up, just all the receivers were tackled. Morse & Brown stymie their guys 1 on 1. Penalty Chicago.
1st & goal) TOUCHDOWN Handoff Harris behind Morse & Torrence. Right side bullied the Bears.
Series 2 Defense : 50-91-97-56
----------------
1st & 10) Handoff RG. Phillips get pushed back by center but both Rousseau and Oliver defeat blocks to make the stop.
2nd & 11) Checkdown to RB inc. Looked like a sugar rush. Rousseau getting close again.
3rd & 11) Rousseau forces Fields to scramble. Floyd & Oliver stunt didn't work at all.
Series 2 Offense : 73-76-71-64-79
----------------
1st & 10) Audible play action to Sherfield. Torrence was getting moved but recovered.
1st & 10) Cook cuts back from RG up the middle good gain. Bates with a good seal block at the hole.
2nd & 5) Swing pass Cook, Knox & Sherfield with good hol... blocks.
1st & 10) Line gives Allen all day for a deep chuck to Sherfield who was held.
1st & 10) Chicago brings some blitzers rushing 6. Line holds up, Cook picks up the free runner, but it's overthrown.
2nd & 10) Screen left, Dawkins beat bad although might be by design. Edwards gets a block in the back though.
2nd & 14) Middle pass batted down. Torrence passes a guy to Bates, who bats the pass.
3rd & 14) Kyle Intercepted. Brown was getting beat on a power-inside move.
Series 3 Defense : 50-92-91-57
----------------
1st & 10) Epenesa almost gets home on a speed rush, Fields has a middle lane and scrambles.
1st & 10) Play action to Moore, blitzers all picked up and Hamlin/Dodson miss a tackle.
1st & 10) Handoff right, Rousseau climbs inside and play bounces outside where nobody's home.
56-91-92-90
2nd & 1) Lawson gets penetration, makes tackle, celebrates. But it's a 1st down.
56-97-91-90
1st & 10) Fields end zone shot. Floyd was getting good push on an inside bull rush, may have affected that throw.
2nd & 10) RPO maybe? Fields had the corner as Kmet sealed Lawson inside but Benford makes the stop.
3rd & 10) Ed Oliver swats the G arms and goes Road Warrior Hawk on Fields as he lets the screen go. Dodson misses the stop, 1st down.
55-99-92-90
1st & goal) Basham gets a free run at Bagent, complete but OPI.
50-99-92-56
1st & goal) Quick out inc.
2nd & goal) Quick cross minimal gain. Everyone was getting there but Rousseau arrives .1 second after the pass.
3rd & goal) Everyone getting through again, QB scrambles thrown inc. Oliver winning again and unalled hold.
4th & goal) FG
Series 3 Offense : 77-65-71-64-79
----------------
1st & 10) Harris sweep right for not much. Sherfield can really block, he took on a DE there.
2nd & 10) Quick out Sherfield. Quessenberry was getting moved but quick route and Boettger helped.
3rd & 4) Torrence was getting beat on a second counter move, but throw gets out and Kincaid wins an Oscar.
1st & 10) Harris behind Quessenberry, Boettger & Morris for a good gain.
2nd & 4) Harris to the same hole but gets tripped by a safety Morris missed from the far side of the formation.
3rd & 2) Boettger beat inside by a bull rush, Allen runs back into the guy beating Brown with a speed rush, and OPI anyway so, punting.
Series 4 Defense : 55-97-99-57
----------------
1st & 10) The entire Bills DL except Phillips arrives at the handoff, lol.
2nd & 12) Settle bull rush moves QB off his spot, dump to TE.
3rd & 10) Settle rolling through the middle lol, Epenesa curls back for the sack.
Series 4 Offense : 77-65-62-63-70
----------------
1st & 10) Harris up the middle, behind Quess & Boettger.
2nd & 5) Allen to Shorter for the cody catch. Boettger from LG picks up the right side end?
1st & 10) Harris goes up the middle behind Mancz, big push from Bills interior OL.
2nd & 4) Harris on the audible cuts behind Mancz & Jarvis but Quess holding negates it.
2nd & 14) TOUCHDOWN Morris, Boettger almost got pushed into Allen, that ball came out at the perfect time.
Series 5 Defense : 55-99-98-57
----------------
1st & 10) After huge return due to uncalled hold. Flare left, short gain. Epenesa gets upfield a lot, but not always toward the QB.
2nd & 😎 Epenesa gets stymied by friggin TONYAN, run goes over Poona for a good gain.
3rd & 4) Settle bats it down but all the line was getting good push.
4th & 4) Klein blitzes... right past the middle screen. Poona & Settle get stymied.
1st & 10) Draw, Settle & Poona recognize it but can't disengage and get driven downfield.
2nd & 7) Repeat: Basham Settle & Poona pour through the line, dump off is inc.
55-94-61-57
3rd & 7) Scramble for a 1st goes past Broughton. Basham easily taken wide on speed rush.
96-94-61-59
1st & goal) Middle dive for short yardage, Cline & Broughton involved.
96-99-98-57
2nd & goal) TOUCHDOWN on the scramble, Settle again penetrates but just goes by the QB. Poona has a really good view of it.
Series 5 Offense : 77-65-62-63-70
----------------
1st & 10) 2 minutes offense. Quick out right Harty.
2nd & 5) Allen misfires, not much to see there.
3rd & 5) Quessenberry and Anderson on tackle both beat with speed rush, Anderson's guy turns the corner for the strip sack.
Series 6 Defense : 96-99-98-57
----------------
1st & 10) Blown coverage (Cam Lewis?) on TE but dropped in End Zone. Cline tried the speed move but did not turn the corner.
2nd & 10) INTERCEPTION. Cline moves inside for the corner blitz from left, which becomes the hot read side, but Ingram rotates over for the pick.
Series 6 Defense : 77-65-62-63-74
----------------
1st & 10) Guess they have the film they need on #70 at RT. Harris left, Van Demark comes over on the wham block.
2nd & 7) Quick out, Quess tries to cut block the end, not quite. Boettger getting walked again.
3rd & 3) Slant to Shorter inc. Van Demark either fell on his face or tried to cut the end to open the passing lane.
4th & 3) Slant to Johnson complete. Interior line picks up blitzer.
1st & 10) Bears send 4, Quess' guy almost gets home again. He's bad.
2nd & 6) Good pocket, hits Wilson in flat.
3rd & 1) Quess getting walked again but Wilson in left flat gets the 1st.
1st & 10) Deep shot is inc. Tackle stunt over C was about to get home.
2nd & 10) FIELD GOAL.
Thoughts:
- Oliver seems even angrier since signing the contract. Good.- Rousseau looks like a FORCE in all 3 preseason games.
- Boettger would be a nice story to come all the way back to make the team, but there's no way he's ahead of anyone else playing G-only.
- Quessenberry is washed. Power works against him, speed works against him.
- Anderson is not the answer at RT lol. I don't know if the RT is on the roster, until I watch the second half.
Thanks for doing this... I know it's a lot of work but for some people, also a lot of fun.
Will you be doing player or unit grades?
Thanks again.

The NFL trade deadline is around week 8 which means you play at least half your gams without the player you traded away.
As everyone seems to agree that there's a huge hole at MLB, it doesn't seem like it would have been a good idea to trade away your starting MLB when you haven't made the playoffs... to say nothing about how far you would advance if you did make them.

Beane's philosophy appears to be, to try to accomplish that by using 1st round picks to take a shot at physical freaks who have a gap in their football resume, valuing that above guys who looked like "good solid starters".
The overall concept is that it's easier to pick up "good solid starters" who have proven themselves as having NFL abilities, on the FA market than it is to pick up "stars", so you better try to grow your own, there. What hasn't really been proven is the bolded... which is not the same thing as saying I don't believe the theory... it just hasn't been proven by any known studies.
If you make the argument that high ceiling/low floor guys have the same success rate as high floor/low ceiling guys, then it obviously makes a lot more sense to draft the former.
Furthermore if you accept the above notion it then can be argued that even if the success rate is a BIT higher for high floor/low ceiling guys it still makes sense to draft high ceiling/low floor guys.

No one's mentioned how good Harty looked yesterday on his 3 punt returns. He didn't break any but you could see his fearlessness, elite agility, and vision upfield. If he has that role and stay healthy he's gonna be an excellent punt returner. He's averaged almost 10 yards per return over his career.
Harty also looked good from scrimmage. IF he stays healthy which is a legit concern, I'm pretty sure he's going to outproduce and outplay what Isaiah McKenzie gave us last year.

I was also glad to see the resurrection of the short passing game. Contrary to belief, Josh Allen is a very accurate short thrower. He can flick his wrist and place balls horizontally very effectively. His completion percentage went down last year (adding to the myth that he's not an accurate thrower) because of the throws he was trying to make on a constant basis.
I still don't know if Dorsey doesn't reign Josh in enough or if Josh has too much leash or if they're both fixated on the big strike but this offense needs to use the horizontal Brady-type game more to open up the throws downfield. Overall they'd be a much more effective offense with a little more restraint.
