    Epic fail on the negatives.

    1. Edmunds type of player?  What does that even mean?  If it means 5 year starter, defensive signal caller, defensive captain, and multiple pro bowls, please sign me up.

    2. Beane does not have a great track record?  Ed Oliver - starter and at times dominant.  5th yer option picked up and still improving.  White - pro bowler and elite CB1.  Edmunds- already covered.  Rousseau - 1st year starter.  OK then.

    3. Beane scrambled?  What is the evidence of that.  He had a player targeted above others and got him.  We do not even know, and never will, if he wanted McDuffie.

    4. Move ahead of 1 team?  Wrong.  If Baltimore was moving the pick, every other team was in play.  By the way, we do not know that Dallas did not want this player.  Their reaction at the draft table after the Bills trade and selection was announced indicated they may well have been targeting the same player.

People here are treating point #4 like it's quantum physics. It's really disturbing.

I believe the prevailing thought was Tennessee was trying to jump us to get Elam, and partly evidenced by the fact that when we jumped Dallas and picked Elam, Titans immediately traded out of the round. So it wasnt just Dallas we were worried about.

I'm not a highlight guy... here's the game between Alabama and Florida last season... Elam (#5) versus Jameson Williams (#1) and John Metchie (#8).

Well, we got the last Option at CB on our board after McDuffie was snagged away from us. No one can say it was the guy “we wanted.” He was the guy “we needed”’ since the others were gone. We made the pick based strictly on need as opposed to BPA.

There’s really no reason to make excuses about any of it. KC sneakily clowned us with the help of NE. It happens. We’re the hunted now and didn’t see it coming.

    We’ll have the last laugh.

If you account for the Bills' habit of drafting elite physical traits and high RASs in the 1st round (Josh, Tremaine, Rousseau), you would doubt the Bills had McDuffie ranked ahead of Elam.

I don’t understand the whole thing.  McD always says his CBs need to tackle and of the top CBs, Elam had a specific negative by Lance Zierlien of “weak run support”.  Booth, who was still available, was noted for great run support and tackling.  They could’ve just stayed at 25 and taken Booth.

Booth? The guy who wasn't drafted in the 1st round?

Looking at the Bills coaching staff with DB's reminds me a lot of what the Dodgers do with pitchers.  If  Zierlein's write up here is close to accurate, this is all fixable.. except maybe the run D/tackling- that'll be up to his teammates to correct and inspire.  Sounds like a 2 year project who is going to get thrown into the fire day 1, whether he likes it or not:

    Overview

Elam is the next up in a long line of talented Florida cornerbacks, but he failed to play his best football in his final collegiate season. He is patient and strong to mirror and impede releases but inconsistent staying connected to the early stages of the route. He plays with good awareness in zone and has the twitch and length to make plays on the throw when squatting in space. He was beat on deep patterns against Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia, which might have led to excessive grabbing and an overall lack of trust in his technique on the 2021 tape. He plays big at the catch point but smaller in run support. Elam has early CB3 and eventual CB2 value as a press and zone corner.

    Strengths

Desired size, length and strength for press man.

Well-balanced with ability to crowd and stuff the release.

Patient feet rarely fall for release fakes.

Able to swivel hips and pursue with fluidity.

Mirrors shifting routes with basketball agility.

Rarely bites on the cheese against double moves.

Allows receiver to close the cushion for him in Cover 3 and quarters coverage.

Squeezes deep sideline routes with physicality.

Contested catches are typically tilted in his favor.

Solid transition quickness to plant and drive on the throw.

Some improvement in his tackling on 2021 tape.

    Weaknesses

    Loses his leverage unnecessarily.

Allows a little too much clearance early in the route.

Needs better open-and-sprint timing when squatting underneath.

Vertical specialists can overtake and stack him.

    Inconsistent digesting route combinations.

Too much panic and grab in his 2021 tape.

Can improve his eye balance between the man and the ball.

Doesn't play to his size in run support duties.

Inconsistent coming to balance as open-field tackler.

I've seen this posted numerous times in this topic. I like Zierlein a lot but he's not infallible. Like all these guys he's wrong a fair amount.

Do you not understand that it was possibly Baltimore the Bills were mainly concerned with and not Dallas. Baltimore was willing to deal and could have been actively taking offers from multiple teams interested in Elam. You don't just have to be concerned only with Dallas.

Baltimore was shopping the pick! How do you not understand this? It's not Dallas you had to be concerned with, it's the other 30 teams in the league.

It's amazing how many people here are struggling with this rather simple concept. It's not like we're talking about the shape of the universe here.

Elam should fit in nicely.  He has two relatives who played in the NFL so he knows the score.

My only concerns are that he missed three games last season because of a knee injury and that his play was a bit inconsistent.

Why come out after a junior season like that?

Because he was confident he'd be drafted in the 1st round so it made zero sense to stay another year and risk a catastrophic injury.

Absolutely, horrendous draft IMO. No good QBs and no elite talent anywhere. What a year to have a top 5 pick. What a year to be Detroit. You need a QB and it would be a massive reach to draft one high in this draft. Should make for an entertaining Thursday night though. No way to predict how this one is going to fall.

It's not really a horrendous draft.

There are fewer than usual 1st round caliber players but the draft overall is considered quite deep.

Giants will trade down a couple times from that 7 pick.  Maybe 7 to 20 so Pitt can grab Willis and then 20 to 25 so Buffalo can get their guy.

Conversely, If a QB NYG likes slides (Willis maybe) I could see Bradberry or Toney and their 2nd getting packaged for 25.

I don't see a scenario where the Giants draft a QB. We'll see soon enough.

Agree. I was 17 and crushed when they lost. Their 'Bermuda Triangle' defense was #1 in the NFL and there is no doubt in my mind that team would have beaten the Raiders in the AFC Championship Game and then the Eagles in the Super Bowl. That 1980 season was their first division title since 1966 and the first I was old enough to remember. That is still one of my favorite Bills teams/seasons of all-time despite the way that San Diego game ended. I took some small consolation in the fact that Bob Chandler won himself a Super Bowl (sadly, traded that year to Oakland for LB Phil Villapiano).

Happy Birthday and many more, Fergy. 😊

Chuck Knox was a very underrated coach and team architect.

He was a three-time NFL Coach of the Year.

He took over a bad Rams team and led them to 5 straight division titles. He took over a bad Buffalo team and led them to consecutive playoff births. He then took over a bad Seattle team and led them to consecutive playoff births in his first two seasons. He had 186 wins, a .558 winning percentage and 11 playoff appearances.

The Bills were a clown show before he arrived and reverted back to being a clown show immediately after he left.

Thanks Ralph. I hope the $100K savings was worth it.

I don't know why Daboll and Schoen are keen to move off him, maybe it is all character issues, I don't pretend to have the answer on that. I do, however, know that my biggest knock on him coming out was route running. He has some Stevie Johnson in him. He runs every route his own way, he is sloppy coming out of breaks and he doesn't get to his landmarks consistently. There is no doubt he is dynamic with the ball in his hands, but if you think about the Daboll offense it is about sharp, precise route running that requires the receivers to read the defense and adjust their routes and puts a lot on their plate in that regard. Someone who does his own thing like Toney doesn't scream immediate fit. Whether it works for the Bills depends on how much Dorsey is sticking with what they had, and how much he is willing to adjust. Whether it is worth it price wise depends on how much the Giants are after and what the truth is character wise.

I think it has to be character concerns.

We seem to have brought in a guy a couple times the past few years that the consensus was they were washed. And guess what? They were washed.  I think this staff does a great job getting the most out of secondary guys. But in my opinion that coaching seems to be more effective on young guys who are more eager and willing to be coached than older vets. Just go with Jackson and draft a guy in the first 4 rounds.

The reason to sign a low-priced veteran is that you have one more layer of safety net.

  12. A few excerpts from the Buffalo News article on David Quessenberry:

    • A 6-foot-5, 310-pounder, Quessenberry started all 17 games in the regular season last year for the Titans, in addition to the team's playoff game against Cincinnati. In 2020, he appeared in 12 games for Tennessee, starting six times.
    • Quessenberry, 31, has traveled a remarkable road to arrive in Buffalo. Originally a sixth-round draft pick of the Houston Texans in 2013, he played in two games as a rookie before his career was put on pause. In June 2014, Quessenberry was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Amazingly, he beat the odds and made an emotional return to the field in December 2017.
    • Quessenberry comes from a football family. His dad, David Sr., played for the Naval Academy, as did his brother, Paul. Additionally, his youngest brother, Scott, is currently an offensive lineman for the Texans.
    • Quessenberry figures to compete for the swing tackle job as the primary backup to starters Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown. He has experience playing on both sides of the line, as his six starts in 2020 came at left tackle after Taylor Lewan was injured for the Titans.
    • Analytics website Pro Football Focus had a favorable review of Quessenberry’s play in 2021. He ranked tied for 14th out of 57 tackles who played at least 633 offensive snaps, with a grade of 80.6 (out of 100), according to PFF. For comparison, Dawkins was the Bills’ highest-rated tackle, and he ranked tied for 17th.
    • Quessenberry excelled as a run blocker, with an overall grade of 89.1 that ranked fourth in the league. However, his pass blocking left plenty to be desired, according to PFF. His 61.6 grade in that category ranked 42nd. Quessenberry was also charged by PFF with allowing 11 sacks, which led the league.
  13. A few nuggets from the Buffalo News article on Lamonica's passing:

    • Lamonica was a fan favorite in Buffalo, even though he started only four games in his four Bills’ seasons, winning all of them. However, he had a knack for bailing the team out. In 1964, Lamonica rallied the Bills to win in Weeks 4, 7, 8 and 9, and the Bills were 9-0.
    • “I talked to Ralph Wilson the night before,” Lamonica told The Buffalo News in 2020. “And he told me, ‘You’re going to come back and be our starting quarterback.’ And eight hours later I was traded. I was absolutely devastated.”
    • The day of the trade, then Buffalo Evening News sports editor Charley Young wrote: "One nagging question remains, however. Whoever has wound up winning in any deal with Al Davis, the Mr. Smart of the American League operators?"
    • In a little over six seasons as the Oakland QB, he compiled a regular-season record of 66-16-6, the best winning percentage of any starting QB in the Super Bowl era with at least 75 starts.
    • Lamonica led the Raiders to a 13-1 record in ’67 and the won the AFL Player of the Year Award. Oakland lost Super Bowl II to the Green Bay Packers. Lamonica helped the Raiders to the AFL championship game in 1968 and 1969 and the AFC championship game in 1970.
    • Lamonica led pro football with 145 touchdown passes from ’67 through ’72 – 24 more than the next best quarterback, Fran Tarkenton. He still holds the Raiders record with 34 touchdown passes in a single season (1969).
    • The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Lamonica had some huge playoff performances. He threw five TD passes in a 41-6 win over Kansas City in 1968 and a record six the following season against Houston. Only Steve Young and Tom Brady have matched Lamonica's six TD passes in a playoff game, and only Patrick Mahomes and Kurt Warner have multiple games with at least five.
    • Lamonica also played a starring role in one of the AFL’s most famous games in 1968. He threw four TD passes, including the go-ahead score to Charlie Smith, in a 43-32 win over the Jets in what is known as the "Heidi Game" because NBC cut away from the finish on the East Coast before the Raiders comeback to show the children's movie.
    • “When I heard the nickname The Mad Bomber, I didn’t like it much,” Lamonica told The News. “I thought, ‘What a dumb name; it sounds like I don’t know where I’m throwing the ball.’ The next week, I get under center and I make eye contact with the cornerback – and he backs up three steps. And I thought, ‘Well, OK, I like that.’ ”
    • In his first game back in Buffalo against the Bills, the 1968 season-opener, Lamonica led the Raiders to a 48-6 victory. The Bills fired head coach Joel Collier after the game.

Right, so just a few days away from the 2022 NFL Draft. Here is my annual compendium of my draft content. Hopefully people find the content interesting in the run up to the draft, and a few people have been kind enough to message me in the last couple of weeks asking for some of the things that this post sets out, but also it stands for the record too. Anyone in the draft evaluations game is going to have misses as well as hits. I never try and hide from the ones I get wrong. They are always out in the open for people to refer to. I liken it to Bill Parcells’ view of Phil Simms and interceptions….. if you ain’t throwing them, you ain’t trying hard enough. If you are not missing on the odd draft evaluation you are probably a fence sitter and therefore not adding much value anyway.

    So without further ado…..

Products that are already published on the board are:

    My 2022 Quarterback evaluations

    My 2022 draft 'sleepers'

Gunner's 2022 Mock Draft (the final version 3.0 against which I will ultimately mark myself, will be published at that link on the day of the draft)

The "new content" in this thread will be:

    A full list of my 18 first round grades;

    An analysis of my top 100;

    My positional top 5s.

    [Key:

    * denotes medical concern

    ^ denotes potential off-field / behavioural concern]

    First Round Grades:

    1. Aiden Hutchinson, DE Michigan

    2. Kyle Hamilton, S, Notre Dame

    3. Kayvon Thibodeaux, DE, Oregon

    4. Andrew Booth*, CB, Clemson

    5. Ahmad Gardner, CB, Cincinnati

    6. Charles Cross, OT, Mississippi State

    7. Derek Stingley, CB, LSU

    8. Ikem Ekwonu, OG, North Carolina Stat

    10. Jameson Williams*, WR, Alabama

    11. Trevor Penning, OT, Northern Iowa

    13. Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas

    14. Jermaine Johnson, DE, Florida State

    15. Evan Neal, OT, Alabama

    16. Garrett Wilson, WR, Ohio State

    17. Nakobe Dean, LB, Georgia

    18. Daxton Hill, S, Michigan

I then also have four borderline 1st/2nd grades: 19. David Ojabo*, DE, Michigan; 20. Drake London, WR, USC; 21. Tyler Linderbaum, C, Iowa; 22. Kyler Gordon, CB, Washington.

    Analysis of Top 100:

Here is the positional breakdown of my top 100:-

    Quarterback: 5

    Running Back: 4

    Tight End: 5

    Wide Receiver: 17

    Offensive Tackle: 8

    Interior Offensive Line: 10

    Total offensive players: 49

    Interior Defensive Line: 7

    Edge Rusher: 12

    Linebacker: 9

    Corner: 14

    Safety: 9

    Total defensive players: 51

Strengths and Weaknesses of the top 100:

I think again it is a pretty balanced top 100 in terms of offense vs defense. It is a 51:49 for a third year in a row, this time in favour of the defensive side of the ball. I will say this about this class, my 100th player has a higher grade than in many other years. Quite often my 100th graded player is in the early to even mid 4th round grade wise – last year being a prime example. The 100th player on my board this year comes in the 3rd round and I have other 3rd round graded guys still on the board after him.

The deep positions are wide receiver (which seems to be deep almost every year now, something to which Brandon Beane alluded on Wednesday in his presser – he attributed it to the rise of the 7 on 7s and passing camps and kids playing in passing offenses more at an earlier age) and defensive back – which may well be the opposite side of the same coin. The sweet spot for receivers is really round 2. I have 12 receivers ranked in my top 60 players. I expect you could even see more than 12 go between round 1 and round 2 as some of the more scheme specific guys that I have graded in round 3 like Calvin Austin and Wan’Dale Robinson come off the board early.

As for defensive backs I think it is a really good safety group, and while 9 safeties in my top 100 is not that unusual, 8 or 9 is about par for the course, to have 5 with grades in the first 2 rounds is less usual. And the safety depth continues past the top 100 too. It is a slightly odd corner class in that I think there are 7 day one or early day two guys who could come in and be really good players early. They are all ranked in my top 34 players. I then have only one more corner between #35 and #70 on my board but then 6 between 70 and 100. I have described it as a bit of a late second round wilderness for the corner class but then there is a lot of 3rd and 4th round guys who I think are intriguing developmental prospects. Those guys might be able to play some as rookies and help you but they are going to need some work too. I think rounds 3 and 4 are the sweet spot for the corner depth.

Which position groups are weak? I again don’t think it is a stellar year for running backs. The flip side of what Beane said about receiver might be that the best athletes in school rarely play running back these days. Kenneth Walker and Breece Hall are both potential lead backs in the NFL but the rest of the class feel like specific role playing backs suited to running back by committee time shares. I also don’t love the tackle depth. The top 3 or 4 guys (depending on where you put Ekwonu and I have him graded as a guard but with tackle flex) are all good prospects but then I only have two second round grades, and three third ground grades. Some of that is I have a few guys who others might see as tackles in that 3rd round region graded as guards, but I just don’t think it is a deep group. A team would be very lucky to get a Spencer Brown type prospect at tackle in round 3 this time around. He was OT10 for me last year and would be OT7 this year.

    Final thoughts

It is often said that the best General Managers separate themselves as drafters in rounds 2-5 and that is going to be even more the case this year. I do think there is good depth on day 2 and into the first half of day 3. This will be the type of draft class that has pro bowlers and all pros drafted in rounds 4 and 5. There are not as many "elite" prospects up at the top end of the draft as normal and a lot has already been said and written about the Quarterback class. But a team that drafts well and follows their board and does not reach on positions in those middle rounds, but allows themselves to stick to best player available is going to look back on this as a critical draft for their franchise. I don't think you will see a ton of big trade ups on Thursday night, maybe one if Malik Willis gets to #4 or #5 and a team like Pittsburgh decides to jump up, but otherwise I expect trades to be more teams moving just a couple of picks each way. But you could see a lot of trade action on Friday night as teams try to marry the value of the board to their needs. As for the Bills.... I expect corner and wide receiver to be addressed somewhere in the first two days. I think safety, tight end and offensive line depth will all be addressed somewhere too. Let's hope Beane and co. can find some stars.

As ever, I will be doing my daily de-briefs each morning after the action, looking at whose drafts I liked and didn't like, the best players I have left on my board and analysing the moves the Bills, in particular, have made. By this time next week the first round will already be in the books..... not long to wait!!

First and foremost, thank you very much for this. It's very impressive and I have to say I agree with most of your work. I'll comment more as I digest it.

If I can make one recommendation for us dumb dumbs.

Maybe separate the MLB from the OLB, with the OLB's being actual linebackers and not EDGE guys.

With our loss of Klein, I think OLB could very well be on the table for us at some point, any many are clamoring for the Edmunds replacement.  Those players are pretty different at LB

Good point. Defining linebacker positions in this day and age is pretty confounding

For instance one emerging distinction is off-ball versus on-ball linebacker.

Then as we all know the Bills play a 4-2-5 as their base defense so it's not as simple as using sam, mike, will, or other conventional tags.

I didn’t see if this was posted up thread and I’m not sure it deserves its own. A little bit on J-Poy and a trade with the Jints

Just FYI, The Bleacher Report piece quotes Joe B's piece in The Athletic:

"If the Bills believe the Poyer situation is going awry, I could see them making a big move up the board and into the top 10—or just outside of it to secure (Kyle) Hamilton's services. The spot I keep coming back to at the top of this range is the Giants at No. 7. It would get the Bills ahead of the Falcons (No. 8), Jets (No. 10) and Commanders (No. 11), all of whom could select Hamilton because of a need at the position and his rare qualities."

It's a d*** move, but just sounds like a bad response to a breakup. I know some states have laws regarding stuff like that, but many have none whatsoever.

Yeeeeaaah.... THAT's why you want him to make a sex tape 😉

BTW, I hope you had a Happy Dingus Day.

May your sex tapes always be released via the highest porn industry protocols.

And no, I'm not of the mindset of "shouldn't have taken the pics if you didn't want them getting out!" as that's just some lame excuse to deflect blame. But at the same time, I doubt 2 celebrities seeing some picture(s) will result in much damage requiring a monetary payout or subsequent action from the NFL.

Agreed. As I said earlier, it's not a big deal so I'm not expecting action by the league or the club.

When I say it's "disturbing and disappointing" I mean that it's not just a big ha ha and an opportunity to make bad jokes and laugh it off.

The exact reason we all love Josh Allen is because at 25 years old, he would never do anything like Von Miller did at the age of 33.

I thought Von Miller was a mature person of high character... thus my disappointment.

  18.

I'm fairly old but I don't remember Lamonica as a Bill.

I do remember him as a Raider though. One of my most memorable early NFL games was a Chiefs-Raiders game in around 1971 or so. Len Dawson vs Daryle Lamonica. Bombs away. Biletnikoff was playing for the Raiders as was Marv Hubbard, Raymond Chester, Jack Tatum, George Atkinson, Ben Davidson.

The Chiefs had Otis Taylor, Buck Buchanan, Willie Lanier, Ed Podolak, Bobby Bell, Jim Lynch, Jim Tyrer, Curly Culp, Marvin Upshaw... there must have been 7-8 future Hall of Famers in that game. The two greatest franchises in AFL history, the black and silver versus the red, the unis were beautiful. Even as a 10 year old I was transfixed in front of the TV. I knew even then I was watching a great football game.

    RIP Daryle. You were awesome.

The person with the Billy Shaw username was not Billy Shaw

I saw a lot of people ask him and he told me himself he was not.. so that's one at least

I do know there were some ex bills on the site but the Billy Shaw told me he wasn't him

Who said he wasn't who? Him?

😅  Are you occasionally startled when you look in the mirror to shave?

Does your wife recognize you as yourself or as Billy Shaw?

Keeping Lamonica and trading Kemp certainly would have been controversial.  Kemp was coming off two AFL titles and three straight AFL East crowns. Belichick certainly trades Kemp and keeps Lamonica but it's a different age.  Plus the Wilson loan to the Raiders and Lamonica causing "locker room" issues, who knows exactly what was behind the trade.  Both Powell and Flores were done by the time they got to Buffalo.  In hindsight, it's the worst trade in Bills history.

Are you the real Pete Gogolak? If so, how's Charlie doing?

23rd round! That kinda puts the Brady 6th round thing in a new perspective.

With this signing, I still think they may take an OL in the top four rounds but now I'm thinking they take four of these 5 positions - CB first round and then in no particular order - WR, , S, NT.

I mostly agree but I can't see them going interior D-line.

Ed Oliver, DaQuan Jones, Jordan Phillips, Timothy Settle, Eli Ankou, Brandin Bryant... it seems we're set here unless someone becomes disproportionately available.

As for Quessenberry and the O-line, it's hard to project the puzzle pieces but so much of that is dictated by injuries anyways. When the smoke clears I believe they'll be an improved unit and that's all that matters.
