To those citing Ruff's lack of a Cup, he got them there and came close with a much less talented team than the Stars, and their best chance was derailed by a freakish run of defensive injuries against Carolina. It was certainly not a coaching issue in either of those seasons. Can’t speak to his time outside of Buffalo.

Wiki: "Despite being without some or all of their four top defensemen (Teppo Numminen, Dmitri Kalinin, Jay McKee and Henrik Tallinder), and their top powerplay scorer, Tim Connolly, who had 11 points in eight games in the playoffs, for much of the series, the Sabres fought back from a three-games-to-two deficit to force a seventh game by way of a 2–1 overtime win in Game 6. Buffalo led the Hurricanes 2–1 going into the final period of the deciding game but blew the lead early in the third and gave up two more late goals for a 4–2 final score."

Wow. Lots of dissecting Beane's sentences with multiple paragraphs.

Maybe the conversation with Chicago will be what it will take for one of their veteran WRs.  If Chicago is looking at picking up one of the big three WRs to go with their rookie QB, then all of a sudden they look over-invested in the WR room.  K Allen, DJ Moore and now a highly touted first rounder.  Getting draft picks for one of those two veterans would then be awfully tempting.  DJ Moore was a Carolina product with a reasonable $15M salary.

Same logic applies for Tenn.  If they want one of the big 3 then Tenn looks over-invested with Ridley/DHop/and big 3 rookie.  DHop looks like a trade target (and he has a very reasonable $13M salary).

The draft capital offered for the veteran WRs would be cheap.  The Bills would still hopefully use an early pick on a WR to use and develop.

    Interesting thought.

The Bills could theoretically upgrade their receiver room significantly without a heavy investment in one of the Top 3 rookie WRs or Brandon Aiyuk.

I see where DJ Chark (who ran a 4.34 40 at the combine) is still making free agent visits.

I was in Buffalo several years ago, and I swear it was for a Bills season opener, but I’m having trouble trying to figure out exactly which game it was.

I can’t remember if it was the following day or exactly when, but I had to catch a flight back to Atlanta and I saw several flight cases (used for music gear among other things) out on the curb at the airport drop off with the name Allman Brothers stenciled on all of them.
I didn’t realize that the Allman Brothers had been playing at Darien Lake that weekend, otherwise I would’ve tried to catch them.

I was standing in the security line, waiting to go through the metal detectors and so forth, and I look back and the guy standing directly behind me was Gregg Allman with some girl. One of my closest friends here in Atlanta is an Allman Brothers disciple and I was half tempted to call my friend Scott (with my Nokia cell) and ask Gregg if he would say hello. Gregg is pretty low-key so I didn’t want to bother him so I never did. I've got some other Gregg/Cher stories from the days when they'd come to Buffalo and hit Stage 1, a regular nightspot for us in Clarence.
I’ve played with a couple of dudes who played with the Allman Brothers (not that I’m exactly in the same league). One of them, the guitar player who backed Gregg on his laid-back tour on 1974, just passed away a couple of months ago. Playing with him was a pleasure, but it also put things in perspective of how good some of these real pros are.
I loaned him my slide and he show me how it’s done properly.
The Allman Brothers, my estimation are probably one of the best or the best American band ever.
Somewhere I have a bunch of pictures from the Rose Hill cemetery in Macon, where Elizabeth Reid, Little Martha, and now Duane, Gregg, and Berry are all buried.

    Long live the Allman Brothers

    Side notes, Buffalo connections:

When Duane got hooked on H back in the early 70's, he did his rehab in Buffalo. That may be the same reason that Gregg was coming frequently in the late 70's. IDK.

Also in the early days when they were just getting started, they played at a club in Buffalo and the a-hole owner wouldn't pay them after the gig. I'm not surprised. I had similar issues living there when I was young. Anyway, bassist Berry Oakley went to collect the $1000 from Angelo Aliotta, owner of Aliotta's, the gin joint where they played.  Aliotta was only willing to part with $500. Road manger Twiggs Lyndon got in the middle of it, stabbed and killed Aliotta.  I believe Twiggs got off using a 'temporary insanity' plea, stating that working for the Allman brothers made him crazy. It actually worked!

    RIP Dickey, you'll be missed.

Dickey was most recently playing with his band(s) The Dickey Betts Band & Great Southern. He was asked to leave the ABB due to his resurgence of heavy drinking and alcoholism in the 90's. Gregg was suffering liver failure and his drinking days had long been behind him when Dickeys drinking flared up again (Gregg and Dickey battled alcoholism on and off most of their adult lives). Dickey was able to sober up afterwards and his band(s) and shows moving forward were worth while.

Dickeys son and Greggs son currently play together in a "Revival" band that is pretty fantastic. They came to Klienhans last year and put on a great show! Highgly recommend if you're a fan of ABB music.

Perhaps no band has as many musical offspring as the ABB. The sons of Berry Oakley, Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, and Gregg Allman are accomplished musicians.

Until our waves of defensive injuries our D was just as good.

The game itself was extremely close, and for good reason. It came down to 1 or 2 plays despite out ravaged D. It's a totally fair comparison between the two teams.

The margin of their defense being better was with Chris Jones.

He had an unmistakable impact on the game that we had no answer for.

Interesting that in this topic, no one has broached trading one of next year's 2nd rounders for a 3rd rounder this year.

I think the Bills will do well to stand pat at #28 but I'm pretty sure everyone will regret not having a 3rd rounder this year... thus trading one of next year's 2nd rounders.

Assuming a 3rd rounder this year nets us a starter, I think it's more important to have that pick this year than next year because of the Josh Allen Window.

Here's an updated list after yesterday's trade of our Current Draft Capital in 2024 and our Projected Capital in 2025 - including Modern Trade Chart (more accurate than the outdated Jimmy Johnson model) Point Values for this season (https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-Value-Chart-Rich-Hill.asp), as well as Projected Comp Picks in 2025:

    2024:

    Round 1 - 28 (209)
    Round 2 - 60 (88)
    Round 4 - 128 (18)
    Round 4 (Comp for Tremaine Edmunds) - 133 (17)
Round 5 (from Chicago for Ryan Bates) - 144 (13)
    Round 5 (from Green Bay for 2023 Pick) - 160 (10)
    Round 5 - 163 (10)
    Round 6 - 200 (5)
    Round 6 (from Dallas for 2023 Pick) - 204 (4)
    Round 7 - 248 (1)

    2025:

    Round 1
Round 2 (from Houston via Minnesota for Diggs)
    Round 2
    Round 3
    Round 4
Round 4 (Projected Comp for Gabe Davis)
Round 5 (Projected Comp for Leonard Floyd)
    Round 6
    Round 7

We had an extra 6th this year and another 5th next year that was used in the Diggs trade. We were projected to get a 6th Round comp pick for Dane Jackson that was cancelled out by the Curtis Samuel signing. We were also projected to get a 7th Round Comp Pick for Tyrel Dodson that more than likely was cancelled by the Austin Johnson signing.

The lack of a 3rd Rounder this year hurts. But looking over the next two years, we have a lot of extra capital that can be used in Trades, not only for this season, but next season as well. An extra 4th, two extra 5th's, and an extra 6th this year. An extra 2nd and 4th next season.

Well, he positioned himself for the Allen pick by first trading Glenn and picks to get #12.

I don't see how he can into the top 10 just trading picks.   He doesn't have the capital.   But a player and his first could get him there.

Bills aren't trading Dawkins (or Spencer Brown?) to move up and expecting to get his replacement in the draft, so it doesn't matter how strong the tackle draft is.   The replacement would have to be on the team or available in free agency.   Edit:  Whoops, Dawg just said that.

As someone said - he's just a good bet to do something.

Shaw is on to something simply for this reason:

Beane has shown a tendency to aggressively improve draft position in the early rounds:

2018: Josh Allen and Tremaine Edmunds

    2019: Cody Ford

    2022: Kaiir Elam

    2023: Dalton Kincaid

That's 5 players in 6 years that he's moved up for in the early rounds.

This brings bad memories of Watkins.  We moved up for him and the following players were drafter after:  Evans, OBJ. Adams (2nd rd), Robinson, and a bunch more with better career.  I am not opposed to moving up a few rungs to get the guy you want but don’t mortgage the future.  Think how much fun draft next year will be without a first or second

Yep, a little PTSD. In 2014 the Bills drafted Sammy Watkins 4th overall. They traded the 9th overall pick plus their next year's 1st and 4th rounders (19th and 115th overall).

There've been other instances of teams packaging picks to trade up for a WR. Julio Jones comes to mind:

"The Atlanta Falcons selected Jones with the sixth overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft despite already having Pro Bowl receiver Roddy White. Jones became the earliest drafted wide receiver in franchise history for the Falcons. The Falcons traded five draft picks to the Cleveland Browns to move up into their spot and take Jones, giving up their 27th, 59th, and 124th picks from the 2011 Draft, and their first and fourth-round picks from the 2012 NFL draft."

In retrospect that was a crazy aggressive move.

I don't think the Bills would have to pay him big money right away.  It's part of what makes Aiyuk attractive, his first year here would be a reasonable salary.  The Bills could structure it for a multi-year contract with guaranteed money for later years.  The real benefit is the reduction of risk in the 2024 season.

I think the FO would really have to figure out Aiyuk's fit here though - culture/diva wise.  It's not a good look forcing his way out of SF and we just went through it.

Getting Rookies and penciling them in as pretty much WR1-ish is riskier than we have seen out of Beane in the past.  But if the Bills can do it and go with rookies it really transitions this team to a Josh lead juggernaut.  Getting the likes of McConkey/K Coleman/T Franklin/Legette would solidify Josh as the leader of this team and get the team with an offense that has a core that will be together for multiple years (Kincaid/Cook/Shakir/rookie WR).

Based on the things Aiyuk himself has said, I think the bolded is incorrect.

He wants to be paid big money, now.

We need a 1, not a 2.  Slim pickings I know, I'd rather take our chances drafting one.

I'm not saying whether the Bills should pursue him or not but Aiyuk's definitely a number one... he relegated Deebo Samuel to number 2 and his already huge numbers from last year (75 receptions 1341 yards 17.6 YPR 7 TDs) would explode if he were to transition to Josh Allen from Brock Purdy.

Those who closely watch the Niners and the NFL know without a doubt that Aiyuk is a number one receiver.

Harris wasn’t a big guy but he played with abandon. I’m glad he was wise enough to walk away on his own terms instead of being a slave to the game as so many NFLers are… pissing away money and thus pathetically grasping at whatever employment is left to them.
