  1. If you were a 29 year old guy going to the Bills Saints game with 2 buddies, where would you go after the game to continue partying? Keep in mind it's a late game and our driving motivational factor(s): ladies. I'm torn between:

    1. Heading to Anchor Bar

    2. Big Tree and other Orchard Park bars

    3. Back to Chippewa/Allen

    4. Something/place better that I haven't even thought of

    What would you recommend?

    1. If you are looking for women do not go to Anchor Bar. Anchor Bar is more of a tourist attraction, wings aren't that great and even though it's called a bar I don't know people that go there for it's party atmosphere.

    2. The bars around the stadium and in OP are probably mostly going to have drunk dudes, since it's after the game and it will be about 7 pm.

    3. I would say most locals your age (29) don't like Chippewa in the same way that locals in Vegas don't go to casinos on the strip. Also, Chippewa might not be that great on a Sunday night. You'd probably enjoy it, but it gets old if you live year round in Buffalo. That's why a lot of people always suggest Allentown and the Elmwood strip...more chill.

    4. Chuckie Cheese?

  2. Thanks for being gracious and the kind thoughts. As to truckers, no clue how they do it. I would go insane from listening to talk radio the first week.

Look at it this way, you are in a hotel and have a bit of freedom. No wife dogs etc. Enjoy the moment and realize that you don't have to clean up after yourself (don't make the cleaning staff's job a chore) or pay for your suite. Personally, I would go grab a ton of books, some beer and just relax.

I am intrigued by people who drive for a living. I recently started a 3 day a week job that is an 80 mile drive each way. I think I am going to get a bunch of books-on-tape. I imagine that is how the truckers do it. Or maybe they are really into meditation.

Do you ever notice that NYC cabbies are always in the midst of an ongoing phone conversation on their bluetooth? They don't speak very loud, they just mumble, because I think technically they're not supposed to be on the phone while they have passengers. I wonder who they're talking to...probably other cabbies.

  3. I have been trying to clean out the cupboards/freezer and I have been coming across a lot of stuff way past the expiration date. I got daring a few months ago when I cooked up some two year old sausage that was in the freezer. Although it was a little tough from the freezer burn, it tasted decent and I survived. This week I've been eating some tuna with expiration dates from 2006 and 2007, and I really can't tell the difference between that and "new" tuna cans. A couple of years ago I put a post on OTW about how I just drank some beer that was in the basement for AT LEAST ten years. That definitely tasted skunky, but again, I survived.

I googled "eating old food" and came across a couple of interesting articles.

I should also mention that this post was subconsciously inspired by stuckincincy's thread about whiskey a few weeks ago:

What is the oldest thing you ever ate?

  4. Who wouldnt nail a drunk freshman behind a bush?

I wouldnt (now that I'm older), but lets be honest, a significant proportion of us would. In full disclosure, I have punched people, and used to drive drunk all the time. It is troubling to hear how he got out of all this and probably much, much more because of who he is.

    Awesome.

  5. and i hope you accept the potential consequences, legal fees, fines that come from that because, evidently, some people never learn. but at least you've made your intentions clear, so i'm sure some of us will be able to point the authorities in the right direction.

To be clear, I think that the kids should be punished. I hate vandals.

If I were ever to actually commit an act of vandalism on a pro athlete's property it would be an act of civil disobedience. I would accept all legal punishment. I hope these teenagers were fans of Thoreau.

If you think I would actually announce on the internet that I was going to commit said act, then I deserve double the punishment being thrown at me for doing something so stupid. Bragging on the internet about partaking in criminal activity is almost as dumb as trying to fight for extra meaningless yards on a kickoff return when your team is protecting a late-4th quarter lead.

Thoughts? Im mixed, i think it teaches the kids a needed lesson. However, i think Leodis could have done alot in regards to PR/fan support to just talk to those kids and tell them why they were wrong...thoughts?

I hope Leodis learned his lesson. If he ever fumbles again while fighting for two extra meaningless yards then I will spray paint his lawn myself.

  7. As I am moving out to Tucson, I will be driving out next week, and my wife will be flying out the first week in October (work pays to ship one car). That said, for the first couple weeks I will be living in a hotel and even if not, I don't think I could make the 38 hour drive with my dogs. We are going to have them shipped. Does anyone know a reliable service for this, or have any experiences with any specific airlines? I have googled, but of course recommendations are always best.

    Thanks!

Edit: They are not small enough to put on a dog carrier and fly with my wife

What kind of dogs? How old are they?

I have made a 10 hour drive alone with a dog. It wasn't a problem for me and the dog, like Corp said, just make sure you take it out every time you stop.

  8. What's your favorite frozen custard stand? Best I've found is Kopp's in Milwaukee. Last time I was there the flavor of the day was macadamia nut and the cup must have had 25 of those delicious morsels nestled inside some absolutely orgasmic custard.

I enjoy Kopp's as well, but will always be loyal to Anderson's as my favorite.

What is your connection to Milwaukee?

  9. Good point... My ring is probably an ounce since I paid about 500 for that... maybe under?... I should weigh it? All of them are 100% platinum. With gold, don't they harden it with platinum depending on the karat?

Have you ever actually tried to sell old jewelry for cash? Factor in the pain in the neck factor and I don't consider jewelry an investment.

A few months ago I was cleaning out my grandma's basement. In an old cigar box we found two gold capped teeth wrapped in cotton. My grandma said she didn't know who they belonged to, because my dead grandpa never had gold caps. Anyway, I dissolved the teeth in some acid and took the gold caps to Airport Plaza Jewelers on Genesee and Union along with two gold necklaces. I got about $70 cash for everything. No scientific testing was done on these pieces. The guy just looked at them an estimated the karat weight based on his experience and what was written on the necklaces.

Could I have haggled? Could have I gone elsewhere? Maybe. But doing that would have been wasting my time. Now try to put yourself in that situation when you say your custom made jewelry is an investment. Imagine yourself going to jeweler-to-jeweler and explaining all the nuances of your ring to the guy and why he should give you xx price. You do that at two or three places and you realize that it's a major pain in the neck, and bottom line, you're not going to get what you paid for the stuff and certainly won't get more than you paid. They're just going to scrap it and make something new out of the metal and stones.

  10. I totally agree Cincy... We went with a Pt estate piece (downtown Chicago) and then had eight small diamonds added into small side settings then a nice sapphire... Her "working band" was then made special to integrate against the ring. Mine is just a plain thin band in Pt also.

All for well under 2 grand back in 1993. Pleasantly understated yet probably worth a lot more today.

I thought engagement/wedding rings depreciate in value. Who the heck would want your wife's used ring? WOMEN WANT THEIR OWN DIAMONDS!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Including all of the Ticketmaster fees?

Did you have to do anything, or did they contact you and just issue the refund automatically?

In 2000 the Beastie Boys and Rage Against the Machine were supposed to do a tour, but then Mike D broke his collarbone. Ticketmaster wouldn't refund their fees. I even tried to do a protest thing with my credit card, but eventually they made me pay the fees.

  12. I received my PhD in Chemistry in December but have been looking and interviewing for jobs since March 2008. I still don't have a permanent full-time job, but I just took a position as a college instructor. Even before the market started to tank in September/October, I was interviewing and learning that companies are in no big hurry to hire, even if there are openings. Internal and 3rd party recruiters love to get your hopes up and give you the runaround, especially 3rd party recruiters.

Pooj: I have had similar things happen to me. I agree with you that it is rude, but I try not to take it personal. As most have said, they have the power, and it is just the nature of their profession. Don't hate the playa, hate the game.

Ramius and Big Cat: I have also had a similar thing happen to me post-interview. You're not rejected, but you're definitely not their top choice. In many cases, I don't think these companies really know WHAT they want. That's most likely why they're not responding to you. Over the course of 4 months, I had two on-site interviews with a company. During this time period, I received phone calls from 3rd party recruiters about this very same position. The recruiter gave me the job description and where the company was located. I told her, "I know what company this is, it's XXXX." She said, "I'm not allowed to reveal the identity of this company." I said, "NO, I know what job this is, I'm already interviewing for it." At this point I knew they were searching for more candidates, but I was communicating with the hiring manager and they told me I was still in consideration. About five weeks after the 2nd interview, I finally received the formal rejection email. When I called to follow up, I found out that they didn't actually offer anyone else the job. As far as I know, it's still open. So basically, even if there are openings, it seems like companies are being very selective in who they hire. Again, I try not to take this personally. Like Chef Jim says, get better.

  13. Yeah I could respect that. I have often been called a fun drunk, never getting nasty with anybody so I guess my wife has put up with it all these years. She has asked me to quit a couple times but I have always refused. She does not ride me to much as I drank like this before we got married so she definately knew what she was getting into & like I said I never really cause any problems when I am drinking, since I have had my son 5 yrs ago, I could probably count the times on my one hand that have drove while being intoxicated. I am not trying to justify my lifestyle, as if I was honest specially with 2 kids now I would be the first one to say I should tone it down on the drinking, the problem is it is so much fun. You have me pegged perfectly with 8-10 beers noone know I am even drinking. The health is good, just got some extra life insurance on myself & blood tests & everything came out great. Blood pressure was fine. I am probably about 15-20 pnds overweight(I am 6ft about 215) but who isnt at my age(I am 36) which I would probably lose if I stopped drinking. I never go to hard stuff, always stick with the beer. If it ever does come down to a health issue with me, I will try my best to quit if not for me for my kids.

What's worse, one shot of whiskey, or 8-10 beers? If you can't just have one beer, I think that means you're an alcoholic.

  14. Patrick Kane sounds like he needs to get his act together. I have it on good authority that he was at a party near Sunset Bay on July 4th weekend and several people I know said he was having sex with this chick on the front lawn of the house, in broad daylight.

Now the girl is complicit in this and I'm all for every guy getting his share but WTF sort of behavior is this? What reason would you feel the need to publicly have sex? Either your ego is out of control or you're drunk as hell. Or both. The indications are that Patrick needs to take a good, long look at himself in the mirror.

I have heard similar stories about him. Not as outrageous as yours, but certainly things that he would not want revealed.
