I’m starting to this this defense is going to evolve to rotation of 4 down lineman supported by 7 safety sized dudes of varying athleticism.

I think 5 DL and 6 LB/DB combo with outside DE's acting like OLB's in the old 3-4 but used to rush and not cover as much.

4-7 would be too small and we'd get eaten in the run game. We need some big bodies up front and LB's who can tackle and get to the ball. Once Dorian Williams is up to speed he may get back on the field.

Jones was a huge loss for the Bills IMO.  He was the one defensive lineman the Bills had to really anchor against opposing teams' running games.  Ankou is not nearly the defensive tackle that Jones is, but at least he has the size Buffalo lost when Jones went down.

Definitely the biggest loss on D as far as replacement. I just don't understand how Jordan Phillips is not a force in the middle. He's over 340 lbs and he gets pushed around. Ankou is 320. You'd think JP would be the bull in the ring helping us clog the middle.

I think it’s as simple as if Milano was playing we would be 6-1. He wins games single handed. He is a game changer.

DaQuon Jones is the key to making the D work. Milano is 2nd. We all saw what happened in Cinci last year. Milano played. Jones out. The D fell apart. they are both vital to this D, but Jones is the one we can't replace.

The defense was given a 3 point lead with a bit under 2 minutes left. All they had to do was stop the worst offense in the NFL 4 times. Instead they gave up a 30-yard screen pass on first down. Damn right they should be embarrassed.

That was a complete meltdown. Pisses me off we can't have a legit defense if one guy goes down.

That sums it up. What an embarrassment.  You can't lose these games! Defense failed when we needed a stop. Offense failed for 3 quarters.  I pissed.

@Gunner. Show me who blocked him. Williams ran past an OL who was already engaged with another player and then Williams fell down or tripped over the OL as Saquon blew past him.  Willams got to his feet and pursued.  You may need the glasses. Watch again and slow it down and you will see.

Sorry? You watched that clip and concluded Williams wasn't blocked? I'd call your local optician if I were you.

Your LB can’t miss that bad.

Upon further review, this is brutal. Milano stuffs that. Williams wasn't even blocked. Oh boy. This is old, hurt Barkley. I don't want to know what Achane or Mostert or Breece Hall would do with that one.  Time to get better quick.

  9. I was ok with Williams. He needs time and there is a definitive drop off from Milano to Williams. Hopefully he continues to improve and learns to play smarter.  Where we were really hurting on D is the loss of Daquan Jones.  The Cincinnati playoff game was when I really noticed his impact. He just quietly makes everyone around him so much better. The D-line barely got pressure on Tyrod. ONE SACK on a team that gives up 5-6 a game. That was pitiful.  Phillips has him moments, but he just doesn't command the attention that Daquan does. Ford was not good. I can see why he was an inactive.

The same goes for Elam. Missing Dane Jackson really hurt the secondary. Elam is brutal and we need to figure out what to do at corner. If we make any trades, CB has to be the top target.  A good #2 WR is next.

  10. The only way to do this is to go to a 5-1-5.

    DL- Miller-GRoot-Phillps-Oliver-Floyd

    LB- Bernard

    DB-Benford, Poyer, Hyde, (Rapp/Johnson) Jackson

This is one way to keep our best players on the field.  Stack the DL and have them set the edge.  Move Rapp in LB position to defend the run and take Milano's coverage responsibilities. I think we'd be susceptible to the run but we are anyways.  Phillips is our biggest DL so try to get him to clog the middle and let Von roam the DL and move around so they can't place where he is coming from and have him rush.

Just an idea, it would change a lot of our current philosophy so it may be too late, but this is the time for McD to show us the genius Defensive coach he is supposed to be.
