  1. I know a lot of Steelers fans and most of them have realistic expectations of this game in that they expect the Bills to win but expect the Steelers to put up a good find and be close throughout. A few maybe on the more overly optimistic (beating the Bills) or pessimistic (getting blown out by Bills).

This is still going to be a very tricky matchup and one I hate right out of the gate given the Steelers physical nature so it was probably a good idea to get the starters some playing time last week to hope avoid any serious injuries.

  2. On one hand, I understand why they kept Sweeney assuming it was close between himself and Hollister for the #2 TE job.

But the fact remains is that Sweeney has not been able to stay on the field and Hollister is a proven commodity in this league.

Just think this is one of those moves that could backfire down the road.

He built his offense to do exactly what Buffalo is not strong defending. A versatile run game, and passing to TEs. He brought in two above average TEs, and Buffalo was abysmal covering TEs last year. Expect a lot of 2 TE sets with a lot of RB motion to take advantage of the Bills defensive weaknesses.

This is what a lot of teams are going to do to the Bills and Frazier's defense this  year until they prove they can stop it.....run the ball up the middle and hit us with the dink and dunk passing game to run clock and keep Allen off the field.

This is why I worry about the Steelers game in particular because it's opening day and that's going to be their MO this year as well assuming they can run the ball effectively again like years past.

Also why I still think DT is still a sneaky need and there's way too much misplaced faith in Star L. having any real impact on the run defense.

  4. I think we are a better overall team than the Steelers but week one games are always tricky and this game concerns me for a number for reasons:

    - Allen coming out with 'sugar rush' so to speak and not sharp early/turnovers

    - Dawkins still not 100% going against the Steelers defense

    - Big Ben and the steelers rushing offense dinking and dunking long sustained drives against our defense keeping Allen and the offense off the field.

    - Steelers more motivated to quiet all the critics that are already writing them off and assuming they are the 3rd best team in the division.

With all that said, I could see a very tight game that we have to come back and win late in the 4th quarter. If things truly go wrong the Steelers win.

I was going there too.  Miami has a lot more capital than NE.  They could easily make the exchange with Watson.  NE may want Rodgers in a year.  That is something I can see.

Belichik is desperate to win now and prove he can do so without Brady. Considering the money they through around in FA I could see them landing Watson and mortgaging the future since he won't be there in a few years to deal with the cap consequences.

Also there's the connection to the Texans GM Nick Caserio to consider here as well.....I really hope I'm wrong.

I don't think the Bills hand was forced on this.

Don't give T Jones a roster spot, cut Addison.

    Seems short-sighted to trade a 24-year old for a 6th Round pick.

How does that make the team any better? He was a 7th Round pick that stuck on the roster for 2-years. And he had the size you can't teach.

Addison is a FA bust, not sure why he is allowed to hang around over a player you drafted and developed.

This front office and coaching staff obviously values Addison more than the fans, or they are too stubborn to admit it was a mistake to sign him, restructure, etc.

Either way there's not many teams out there that would give up even a 7th round pick for 34 old declining player with his type of salary which is why I hoped at the very least we could have swapped him for a DB or OL veteran at a similar age/price.

Regarding Johnson, yes it would have been great to keep him but aside from ST how many snaps was he going to see on this team at DE this year? So getting a 6th rounder (which could be closer to a 5th rounder in reality depending on where the Panthers finish) is not a bad deal vs cutting him outright for nothing.

You are most certainly welcome to your opinion, but your blanket statement is ridiculous. I think you and quite a few others on here just don't like our defensive philosophy. Many want a huge nose tackle like Ted Washington and run-stuffing MLB. Fine. If that's what you expect then Beane has failed miserably. But, that is not reality for the Bills defense.

The Bills run a defense that thrives on sideline to sideline mobility. This, as others have said, makes a solid pass-stopping defense. So, if you're expecting FA acquisions and draft picks that fit a run-stuffing style, then you're welcome to be critical but you won't be happy.

As I see it, we have a really promising group of defensive talent crafted to stop the pass in this pass-happy NFL.

Most of the high profile players on defense that Beane has drafted or signed as FA have not panned out including Edmunds, Addision, Oliver, etc.

And yes not going to lie, I hate the 'bend but don't break' style of defense because when it breaks so to speak it's not pretty (see both games against KC)

What exactly do they have on offense couple of good WR’s what else ????

Offensive line is rock solid albeit no star type players, Gesicki is a stud TE (top 5 -8 for sure), and their RB's are at worse equal to the Bills in Gaskin/Brown vs. Motor/Moss.

If anything their defense is what would concern me given the absurd talent their at just about every position but as long as JA17 keeps doing thing against them I suppose we are good.

Like I mentioned before, even with a marginally improved Tua their floor should be 10 wins. They get a guy like Watson they will be a SB team (at least in the eyes of the media).

Do we get to criticize Beane for giving Addison that horrible contract? He’s given out some terrible contracts to former Panthers.

Yes plenty are. As good as Beane has been rebuilding this offense he's been terrible on defense for the most part with FA's and draft picks, which is also why I'm still tempering my expectations with Epineza and Rousseau despite their strong camp/preseason showings.

But getting back to Addison (and Butler), it was one thing to restructure their deals but they should have been done so to cut/trade them without the cap hits associated with them.

If Obada ends up being semi decent and at worse getting the 5 sacks he did in Carolina it somewhat offsets the Addison deal though.

I think they just weren’t gonna keep 7 DEs no matter what.

I’ll echo others in saying I wish Addison were the one to go instead.

I wonder who takes Bam’s role on special teams, and whether this means they’ll keep six instead of five linebackers.

You can only keep so many ST focused players when you have SB aspirations and need guys that can actually contribute in live game action, that's why I also think guys like Taiwan Jones are going to be gone soon as well.

As for Addison, I wouldn't be surprised if he essentially this year's Trent Murphy by midseason (assume he is in fact safe). Because no way we are wasting reps on him the glut of young talent that is ready to contribute out of the gate.

So the final pre-season game of 2021 is in the books. The Bills went 3-0 to follow 4-0 in 2019 and are now unbeaten in 8 pre-season outings. That usually speaks pretty directly to depth on the roster and there is no doubting this Bills roster is deep, although I think if anything things may have simplified and crystalized a little for Beane and co. last night. So with no further ado...

    Good Night for...

Josh Allen and his starting receivers - I won't labour too long on this and it barely needs mentioning but in his first action of pre-season Allen was on point throwing two absolute bullet touchdowns. The first - to Gabriel Davis on third and long - was a throw only 3 or 4 Quarterbacks in the entire league can make and the second was the definition of tight window to Zack Moss. It was the first pre-season action for Cole Beasley and Emmanuel Sanders too and they had 4 grabs a piece while Davis (who has played in some of the earlier games) had 5 for 75 yards and that score. There were no discernable signs of rust here. Allen and his pass catchers are ready for week 1.

Matt Breida - I liked the low risk pickup of Breida in the offseason but it is fair to say he hasn't exactly popped in the first two pre-season games where they have used him more in a conventional running back mode. Last night he was used in the Isaiah McKenzie role, taking a sweep 16 yards on his only carry and catching a bubble screen too. I wasn't totally sold that he was safe but given McKenzie is nicked up and his ability to give the Bills an option in that package I suspect he is now pretty secure on the 53 as an emergency conventional running back who can also backup McKenzie's gimmick role.

Siran Neal - Not that Siran Neal's roster spot was in any doubt but he had a really good night, he was active and around the football as the starting nickel, had a big tackle on special teams and played some safety in the second half. For those bottom of the roster guys being able to help in multiple ways is always big and Neal again proved his worth.

Damar Hamlin - Talking of backup safeties.... I think Damar Hamlin secured a roster spot last night. He has been battling with Josh Thomas for the 4th safety spot all summer and last night I thought he separated himself. He had a nice pass breakup and he flashed on special teams too. I suspect when you add that to the fact that Thomas is likely the easier one to sneak through to the practice squad the signs point towards Hamlin being on the 53.

Jake Fromm - I think some readers of my previous good night / bad night columns will believe that I am anti-Jake Fromm and nothing could be further from the truth. I still think there were throws last night where the ball hangs in the air because he doesn't generate the requisite velocity and where in regular season play the risk of interceptions would be high. However, this was a nice outing from the former Georgia Quarterback that likely guarantees he is still in the league this year as at least a practice squad guy and possibly even sneaking onto a roster for a team that wants to carry 3 guys. His touchdown run was a cool moment for him.

    Bad Night for...

Cam Lewis - I think Cam Lewis was the one guy who I had on the outside looking in but with a real chance of forcing his way onto the 53 last night. With Dane Jackson and Levi Wallace out and a question about corner depth he got the start opposite Tre White but missed his opportunity. He had a couple of mental errors in coverage that allowed completions and while he was by no means a disaster when McDermott and Beane sit down to go through that film he isn't gonna jump out as a guy they simply can't live without. There might still be a route for him depending on what happens with Jaquan Johnson who has missed the last two games injured. He could be a candidate for IR after the 53 is announced after which they bring back either Lewis (and use Neal as safety depth for the first few weeks) or Josh Thomas.

Cody Ford - Ford, Feliciano and Boettger have been rotating in the guard spots this pre-season. Last night Ford got the start at RG with Feliciano at LG but he did not have a good first drive allowing two pressures - one of which Allen escaped from out to his right and found Singletary for a dump off, the other led to the ball Allen threw into the dirt. He was replaced on the second drive by Boettger who then stayed in on the third drive too and I have to say he played much better. I should add it was Boettger's man who got the hit on Allen on the second touchdown throw, but otherwise he just looked calmer and more balanced in pass protection where Ford looks a bit frantic and less sure with his footwork. I think Ford has the advantage if the Bills want to be a power run team, but this is a pass first offense and as a pass protector.... Boettger is just better right now. I would not be surprised to see the former UDFA start over the former 2nd round pick in two weeks' time.

Backup tackle depth - It has been a theme of the pre-season but Tommy Doyle and Bobby Hart would be liabilities starting in actual NFL games. Both got blown by multiple times and while there are excuses that can be made for Doyle "oh he is a 5th round pick and he is raw" etc the truth is if he was an UDFA nobody would have a single issue about him being on the cut list. I suspect the Bills would like to hang onto him and maybe they even find a way to fit him on the 53 but for me this is the number 1 spot where I look for them to make a move after other teams have made their cuts.

Dion Dawkins - Talking of offensive tackle, and not going over the top here, but Dion doesn't look all the way back yet to me, which is understandable. He got beaten by his guy a couple of times yesterday including on the play where Allen wisely gave himself up for a sack (Daryl Williams was also beaten on the play and Josh had nowhere to go). It is not crisis time by any means but just a reminder to folks that if Dion starts this season slow we should cut him a bit of slack. He still looks short of his ideal playing weight.

Long snapping - It shows where the Bills have been pre-season that I am having to talk about long snapping as a concern. Reid Ferguson having a back issue right before the season is a bit of a worry. That is not the sort of injury that just disappears quickly and it is hard to totally rest a back when long snapping is your job. It is, bizarrely, an area where the Bills miss Lee Smith who has long snapped in an NFL game before now whereas it looked like AJ Epenesa had drawn the short straw trying to do it last night. I suspect Ferguson plays next week but it is almost a guarantee now that the Bills carry a long snapper as one of their 16 practice squad guys so that they have the option of using one of those free "game day call ups" that they have in the event that Reid has a week where he just can't go.

    We are on to Pittsburgh!

I still think we are going to make moves for DB and OL help as soon as today.

With all the depth we've accumulated at most other positions there's no way we are going to rely on the current depth chart for key positions like this were the Bills have been hit hard by injury in recent years.

I've said all along we are a White injury away from having one of the worst DB groups in the league and that can't happen if we want to hang with teams like the Chiefs, let along actually beat them.

I am going to say it.... I don't love it. I'd rather Addison or Obada go if they don't want to keep 7 ends but hey ho.

I don't either, but the reality is he's really a ST standout that has had a grand total of 2 sacks his first two years here. Sure he could end up doing more in an expanded role in Carolina but this team is loaded and outside of ST he was probably going to get even less reps at DE than he did the previous two years had he made the team.

The Phins are so overrated. Flores too , is highly over blown. They simply have no clue what they're doing, and the bottom falls out this year.

They got 10 wins last year with a rookie QB playing poorly and Fitz typically good week/bad week type of play.

And when you look at their roster from top to bottom it's hard to argue they are at worse equal to the Bills minus QB.

I will agree that Flores seems to be playing with fire with not only how he handled the QB position last year, but how he's all but publicly admit Tua isn't the answer with all this Watson speculation especially if they are willing to give anything close to what Houston is apparently asking for in a trade.

No knock on Jim Kelly (still "Mr Buffalo Bill"), but prior to the season Allen had in 2020, I don't know that any Bills QB in my lifetime put together a better 8 game stretch than Bledsoe had in 2002.  He made throws that very few QB's could make... that pass to Peerless Price in OT of that Vikings game is still, for me, one of the prettiest passes I have ever seen... too bad we didn't get him a year or two earlier.  The game was a little different then, than it is today.

The game is very different indeed, which is also why traditional pocket QB's like Bledsoe are near extinct in this league with all the big armed, mobile guys like Mahomes, Allen, etc now being the 'prototypical' NFL QB so to speak.
